A few drugs providetemporary improvementof thinking and memoryin Alzheimer’s patients iftheir disease is not too faradvaadvaad nced. The issue is, willsuch drugs help normaladults, such as seniorswhose only disease is thatof getting older and losingsome memory capability inthe process. Now there is aformal study by Ariel Rokemand Michael Silver at U.C.BerkeBerkeBer ley showing that onesuch Alzheimer drug canimprove memory in youngadults who do not havehavehaAlzheimer’s Disease. The Alzeheimer’s drugs

typically belong to theclass of drugs known asacetylcholine esteraseinhibitors. These drugsinhibit the esterase enzymethat normal destroysthe neurotransmitter, otransmitter, otransmitteracetylcholine, as it isreleased normally to keepneurons activeactiveacti . Actually, thisclass of drugs was developedfrom research on “nerve gas”

drugs, which act in the sameway, but are so potent theyare fatal. The inveinvein stigators tested

12 healthy, non-smokingadults, ages 18-35. Theirlearning task was to detectwhether two visual fields of

moving dots, presentedone after theother, other, other werein the samedirection. So, this taskmeasuresattentivetentivetenti ness, sensory

perception, and the workingmemory of what theprevious display looked like.Subjects learned a

perceptual task in whichthey were viewing aparticular direction ofmotion in a particularlocation in the visual field.Previous research hadalready shown that thiskind of learning tends togeneralize only partiallyto other locations in the

visual field and to otherdirections of motion. Thisis akin to a person whosejob is to sort green appleson a conveconvecon yor belt. Throughtraining, this person maybecome able to perforperforperf mvery fine discriminationsbetween differdifferdif ent shadesof green apples. However,er,erif this training on greenapples does not improvethis person’s ability todiscriminate differdifferdif ent shadesof red apples, we wouldsay that the perceptuallearning is specific to greenand does not generalize (ortransfer) to red. The studymeasured the degree ofspecificity of perceptuallearning by comparing theimprovement in perforperforperf mancein the trained locationand trained direction ofmotion to improvements inother locations and otherdirections. Editor’s Note: This month’scolumn was written by AlyssaGeorge, MPT.

I have been having a lot ofpain in my lower abdomenand pelvic region for the pasttwo years. I have seen severaldifferent specialists, but noone can tellme why I amhaving thispain. I’ve readon the internetthat physicaltherapy(PT) may bebeneficial. What can PTdo to help me?

Pelvic pain is a commonand often unbearable problemthat can have profound effectson the physical and emotionalhealth of both men andwomen. One study found theincidence of chronic pelvicpain to be similar to that ofmigraine, back pain, andasthma, making it one of themost common problems seenin medical practice for womenages 12 to 70. Additionally, around nine percent ofwomen having hysterectomysurgery will develop pelvicpain or back pain within twoyears of the surgery.Chronic pelvic pain (CPP)

is not a specific disease and

the term CPP refers to thesymptom of pain, specifically, the duration and location ofthe pain. Pain is considered“chronic” when it has beenpresent for at least sixmonths. Patients with CPPmay report pain in a varietyof different areas in theregion below the belly button. They may report pain bothinternally and externally;one-side, both sides, or rightin the middle; or shootinginto the lower back, belly, buttocks, hips, or thighs. The pain may be related toa woman’s menstrual cycle, only occurring once in awhile,or be constantly present.Patients with CPP

may describe pain withintercourse and changes inbowel and urinary habits.CPP may be the resultof a number of differentdisease processes or muscleimbalances. It can be difficultto identify the true origin ofa patient’s symptoms, oftenleaving the sufferer withmore questions than answers, and a significant medicalrecord of seeking varioustreatments without relief. However, it is important foryou to know that you have

If you are looking for arefreshing summer dessert, I sawsome beautiful mangoes at themarkemarkemar t last week and they inspiredme to make a mango dessert sauce. When you buy them in the store, most mangoes are hard, so youneed to plan ahead as they must

be fully ripenedbeforbeforbef e eating.Since

mangos willripen at roomtemperatureand becomesweeter andsofter overseveral days, don’t refrigeratethem untilthey are ripe.

Mangoes havehaveha a flat seed, so oncethey are peeled, you’ll need tocut around the seed givinggivinggi you 2large side pieces and 2 smaller sidepieces. This recipe keeps severaldays in the refrigerator and is alsowonderful over ice cream.

A patch of gray here or a wrinkle there need not be asource of worry for men and women after 50.A regimen of sound nutrition combined with use

of innovativetiveti cosmetics and concealing garments cankeep you looking your best.Changes to Skin and HairFactors such as sun exposure – responsible for 85-90

percent of the signs of aging – and oxidation can take aheavyheavyhea toll on skin.According to research from BeautiControl, a beauty

company that specializes personalized skin care andadvaadvaad nced anti-aging products, UVB and UVAUVAUV rays cancause extreme damage to skin’s DNA that can result inreversible and irreversible damage.UVB rays cause visible damage, penetrating just

under the skin’s surfacesurfacesurf and causing skin to burn ortan. UVAUVAUV rays, on the other hand, penetrate throughthe skin; their damage is not obvious to the naked eye. These rays are the ones responsible for long-term

damage that manifests itself in the form of saggingskin, lines and wrinkles and age spots. When UV rays penetrate the outer protection of each

skin cell, it causes the skin cell to oxidize and becomedefective, defective, defecti similar to the way an apple turns brownwhen the skin is broken.Products including sunblock and blends of

antioxidants can protect against the damage wroughtby sun damage.Meanwhile hair can become more brittle, lose

pigments and change in texture as you age, accordingto Estella Garcia, hairstylist at Crestview RetirementCommunity.

“I tell many of my clients to take a multivitamin, multivitamin, multiincluding Vitamin D,” she said.MakeMakeMak Up and Skin Care after 50Jeanine Gouge, an independent director for

BeautiControl, said proper skincare is the key tobeauty after 50.But a variety of application techniques can aid in

concealing skin pigmentation – that can take place aswomen mature – and shadowing caused by the shifting

of fat deposits in the face.“You“You“Y can spot shadowing by looking straight into the

mirror and then tilting your face down,” said Gouge.“Then you can go in with a concealer that is lighterthan the color of your skin to conceal the shadowing.”The base and bridge of the nose and in the corners of

your eyes and contours of your face are areas that canbe lightened with concealer.Gouge said additional make up coverage can also

help to conceal skin pigmentation.Nancy Pride, owner of Morgan Fitzgerald’s in Bryan,

said application of blush slightly under the cheekbone, rather than above it, can givegivegi the appearance of liftingthe face. She added that many skincare products, aided by

technological strides, can boost the development ofcollagen in the body.Men can benefit from the same skincare regimen as

women, especially with regard to sun protection, Pridesaid.Hair and Nail CareGarcia said seniors should continue, as they did in

younger years, to trim their hair every six weeks. She said many of her clients seek out new trends

and adviceadvicead on hair color. And likewise, men shouldmaintain regular trims, including facial hair.Pride said wigs can be a great option for women,

experiencing hair loss or who simply want to look theirbest with minimal effoeffoef rt.

“Many of my customers remember the days whenwigswere hot, uncomforuncomforuncomf table andnot natural looking,”said Pride. “But wigs havehaveha come a long way. They arelight and comforcomforcomf table, and they can make you look 10years younger.”Proper nail care also becomes important later in life,

according to Garcia. Vitamin supplements can keepnails strong, and regularmanicures and pedicures – formen and women and especially diabetics – can preventingrown nails.FashionMost women over the age of 50 havehaveha already

established a sense of personal style, said Pride, andthey should stick to it.

“With age comes many body changes,” said Pride.“Everyone wants to look thinner and more fit.”Undergarments such as Spanx, Yummie Tummie

and SassieBax worn under the clothes can help to givegivegiwomen a more fit appearance, Pride said.

“Feel free to mix and match coordinating pieces indifferdifferdif ent size tops and bottoms,” Pride said. “And ifyou already havehaveha an established wardrobe, add trimcolors and styles to create a more current look.”Also, strategically placed accessories can accentuate

your best attributes, she said. Arch support in shoes isimportant for comforcomforcomf t and taking proper care of feet.Men can also keep a sense of fashion late into life.

Pride said men can wear Yummie Tummieundergarments to givegivegi the appearance of a six packand wear colors that enhance their skin tone.

“Many people develop rosacea as they age,” she said.“So take care not to wear colors that make you lookredder.”On the other hand, seniors with a more sallow tone

can pull of reds and pinks.Seniors can find additional tips in InStyleMagazine’s

book Secrets of Style, which can help them to identifyand dress for their body type, said Pride.

No age limit on beautyTaking proper care of yourself can have you looking your best for years to come

AboveAboveAbo : Skin care is important as you age. Take 5 Easy Steps to PumpUpYour Heart

Did you know that a goodnight’s sleep can help preventheart disease?

An estimated 58 millionAmericans are affecaffecaff ted by heartdisease, including nearly half amillion women who die everyyear of heart disease and stroke.Yet, women continue to lagbehind in their understanding ofthis disease.

So take these steps to helplower your risk of heart attack.1. Know your numbers.Your blood pressure,

cholesterolandtriglyceridelevelsare the most important numbersyou need to know beforbeforbef e youstart on the path to good hearthealth. A normal blood pressurelevel is 140 over 85 or a bit lower.Total cholesterol levels shouldbe less than 200; triglyceridesless than 150.2. Start walking.Exercise is the fountain of

youth. A simple 20- to 30-minutewalk a few days a week canactually reduce the risk ofpremature death by more than50 percent. Physical activity alsoimproves sleep, reduces stress, elevates mood, reduces bloodpressure, improves cholesterol

levels, improves cognition, andprevents memory loss.3. Laugh out loud.Laughter really is the best

medicine. Just 15 minutes oflaughter isequivalent toabout30minutes of aerobic exercise withrespect to our cardiovascularhealth. Laughter has also beenlinked to the healthy function ofblood vessels, an increase of thebrain hormones that improvemood, and reduction of pain andanxiety.4. Focus on your waistline,

not your weight.Your waistline is a better

measurement of your overallhealth than your weightbecause the amount of fataround your waistline is directlylinked to high blood pressureand high cholesterol and canplace you at increased risk fordiabetes. Anything you can doto make your waistline smalleris definitely a step in the rightdirection. Liposuction doesn’tcount!5. Get a good night’st’st’ sleep.Sleep is one of the most

undervalued elements of ourdaily routines, but it is absolutelyvital to good health. Lack of sleepincreases your blood pressure, induces stress, increases yourappetite, slows down your

metabolism, dampens yourmood, and decreases yourcognition.

ConstipationMythsCleared Up

Constipation is a chronicproblem for many older adultsthat requires an individualizedtreatment plan. Relieving it canbe more difficult than short-term use of a laxative or eatingmore fiber.Myth: An absence of daily

bowel movements indicatesconstipation.Fact: Constipation is most

accurately defined as theinfrequent or difficult passing ofstool. Normal bowel-movementfrequency in adults can rangefrom three times a day to threetimes a week.Myth: Constipation causes

the body to absorb toxins fromstools.Fact: Not true. This belief

causes some people to takelaxatives unnecessarily whendaily bowel movement doesn’toccur. Others try colon cleansingto remove supposed toxins. These practices aren’t helpful. They even may be harmful.

common Alzheimer’s drug, increasedthe degree of this specificity. Each subject completed two five-day

courses of training on this task. In oneof these courses, subjects took a 5 mgpill of the acetylcholinesterase inhibitor, inhibitor, inhibitordonepezil (brand name = Aricept),beforbeforbef e each training session and thiswas counterbalanced in the secondtraining course when only a placebo pillwas taken. The test design was double-blind. That is, neither the trainers northe subjects knew whether the pill wasdonepezil or placebo. The drug produced a doubling of

perforperforperf mance, compared with theplacebo. This present study shouldencourage the study of such drugs in thenormal elderlyelderlyelder . If they improve memoryin young adults, surely they might helpolder normal people.I assume the memory benefit

occurs because acetylcholinesteraseinhibitors make the brain more alertand more attentivetentivetenti . Indeed, Dr. Silverand colleagues havehaveha completed a studyshowing that donepezil does improvevoluntary attentivetentivetenti ness. Recall that inan earlierearlierear column I described researchthat showed the main cause of memorydecline in the elderlyelderlyelder was due toloss of attentivetentivetenti ness and increase indistractibility. The researchers havehaveha also

collaborated with Sarah Mednick at U.C.San Diego to study any additiveadditiveadditi benefit

of naps. This is related to donepezilstudies, because certain stages ofsleep (in particular, ticular, ticular dream sleep) areassociated with increases in the levelsof release of acetylcholine in the brain. As could be predicted from the currentresults, the number of minutes a personspends in dream sleep during the nappredicts the degree of specificity ofperceptual learning in a post-nap test.It is possible that donepezil wouldenhance the beneficial effectseffectsef of nappingon memory, memory, memory especially in older peoplewho might benefit from improvedacetylcholine function. As for what to do for Alzheimer’s

patients, the currently available drugsdo not cure and only provide temporaryrelief of symptoms. The best thing is totry to prevent the disease’s development.Next month, I will discuss what wethink we know about how to preventAlzheimer’s Disease.Reminder: school starts this month.

options when it comes to pain relief, and theanswer is not always found in medications orsurgery.Physical therapy is usually

a welcome addition to themedical management ofCPP because it often resultsin significant pain relief, improvement in function, and provides strategiesfor patients to managetheir pain more effectieffectief vefectivefecti ly.Pelvic pain can be causedby problems such as pelvicjoint dysfunction; muscleimbalance within themuscles of the pelvic floor, floor, floortrunk, and/or hips; lack ofcoordination in the musclesrelated to bowel and bladderfunction; tender points in themuscles of the pelvic floor; pressure on one ormore nerves in the pelvis; and weakness in themuscles of the pelvis and pelvic floor.Pelvic pain can also be related to the

presence of scar tissue after abdominalor pelvic surgery. There can also be anidentifiable disease process related to pelvicpain; thereforeforef e it is important to consult yourphysician to fully determine the cause of yourpain. Now let’s discuss how physical therapycan help relieve your pelvic pain.Physical therapy treatment typically does

not directly target the pelvic or abdominalorgans. Rather, ther, ther PT treatment is based on

the principal of referred pain and thereforeforef e,physical therapists may treat the muscle, nerve, and joint consequences of organdysfunction. While this may not entirelyeliminate the source of a person’s pain, itwill reduce the person’s pain and improvefunction. Physical therapists are trained

to evaluate and treatjoint dysfunction, muscletightness, weakness inmuscle groups, and nerveentrapment, which are allpotential causes of pelvicpain. Physical therapiststrained specifically inthe area of pelvic healthcan identify the possiblegenerators of pelvic painand develop a treatment planspecific to the patient. Aphysical therapist trained inthis area may utilize handson techniques to addressmuscle tightness or targetedexercises to improve muscle

strength and reduce faulty patterns of musclerecruitment. Other treatment strategies mayinclude: biofeedback, retraining of muscles toimprove coordination, postural training, andstrengthening of the abdominal core muscles. You should be aware of all your optionswhen it comes to treatment of pelvic pain.A physical therapist trained in the area ofpelvic pain can provide effectieffectief ve,fective, fecti non-invanon-invanon-in sivesivesitreatment to help alleviate your pain.
