St Mary’s YardA vibrant collection of pedestrianised
streets and spaces teeming with activity and street life
1. Brunel Square: A lively, pedestrianised public space that combines London Street and Paddington
Ramp to create a fitting entrance to the station. Its south-west orientation makes it ideal for cafés with the
backdrop of the Sorting Office’s memorable façade
2. Mint Yard: A quieter, more internal public square with hard and sift landscaping, animated by inde-
pendently run cafes, restaurants and shops
3. South Wharf Square: Part covered part open, two existing ‘dead’ spaces are brought to life by a
new connection from London St into Paddington Station’s taxi area – a valuable ‘back door’ into and out
of the station
4. Bays Wharf: A proposed replacement for the Paterson building and Drug Dependency Unit opens up
views along a pedestrian route from Mint Yard to a new green space at the ‘elbow’ of Paddington Basin
5. Paddington Market: Created through the redevelopment of the Sorting Office, a vibrant covered
space forming the transition from Brunel Square to Mint Yard
6. Mint Arcade: A glass-roofed space incorporating existing buildings centred on the ‘Mint Museum’ of St
Mary’s history
7. Winsland Mews: A direct new vehicular service road to replace London Street’s tortuous bends with
a route that is more convenient for the ambulances arriving at St Mary’s A&E as well as providing access
to the scheme’s underground parking areas
8. Hospital buildings & mixed use commercial tower: Mixed uses at street level with employ-
ment space above helping to generate the revenue to ensure the project’s economic viability
9. Bringing the streets to life: A combination of shops and eateries, benefitting from the increased
footfall along the new public routes and alleyways, with affordable and private residential accommodation
above
10. The Cycle Hub: A street level entrance and café with generous space in the basement for secure bike
parking, also offering repairs and rental
11. Mercure Hotel: Expanded to take advantage of its prime location at one of London’s most important
gateways
12. Duplex dwellings: Ground and first floor level homes with their own front doors and green space,
patios or balconies
