PRO TIP:One of the questions that is frequently asked is how can I get more club head speed? The first question I have is do you stretch? If you do not stretch, you are probable lacking club head speed due to not being able to make an effective turn because you are not flexible enough. Not being able to make a good turn will resist you from taking the club back far enough to create the club head speed you need to hit the ball farther. Another thing you can do to create more club head speed is grab a broom and go into your backyard and swing the broom like a baseball ball. Swinging the broom will help speed up your arms to create more speed for the distance you need. Try swinging the broom and stretching for twenty minutes a day and start watching the ball fly farther.

In this month’s Junior Corner article, I would like to spotlight a new JPP member, Tyson Rutledge. Tyson is 13 years old and plays golf for Granite Ridge. At Granite Ridge, Tyson’s favorite subject is math and currently has a 4.0 GPA. He has only been playing golf for 4 months but has already shot a 40 for nine holes. When he graduates high school, Tyson would like to attend Stanford University and play on the golf team there. His favorite golfer is Rory McIlroy. His favorite golf course that he has played is Torrey Pines in San Diego. Tyson also plays baseball and soccer and if golf doesn’t pan out he would like to play in the MLB. Tyson is a great addition to our junior golf membership. If you see him say hello and wish him luck on his future in golf.

points, with Woody Alexander and Cliff McNabb tied at 15 points. The Merced trip revealed a Country Club in grave difficulties - a membership down to the 200s level, increasing costs, some disrepair and no prospective members.
On 4/23 we put together a great bus trip to Stevenson Ranch. News flash -” NO WIND AT STEVENSON - global warming suspected”. The weather was perfect and Stevenson went out of their way to welcome the Fort Seniors - they shortened up the course making irons possible for second shots instead of 3 wood and, in general, bent over backward to welcome us. We were honored by the presence of President Larry Wapner, who provided the bus entertainment and whose team finished DAL Larry did win a sleeve of Pro V1s but when he discovered they had a logo of “AE” on the balls demanded to know who was AE! to make that determination he rolled the balls down the bus isle into the waiting hands of Kurt Smith, who skillfully pocketed the balls. The Wool Growers dinner was, as always, outstanding! As noted, a great trip.
The Senior bus trip also caused some changes in the point totals: Kurt Smith 33.5 points, Mike Hurst 28 points, Cliff McNabb and Woody Alexander 24 points, Plato Sterios 20.5 points and Jim Rodgers and Bill Jirsa tied at 19 points. On 5/1 the travel league will play San Joaquin G&CC. Bill MacLean, due to a prior obligation, will be unable to provide transportation to this event.
May 7th and 8th will be our Senior Invitational, northern California’s premier Senior Tournament - stories to follow.
A tip of the cap to Ed Marasco - A Fort range rat, spending hours on end on the driving range and practice facilities working on and improving his golf game. But on Saturdays he’s not alone - he’s got a group of Fort junior golfers following him around (like the pied piper) teaching and working on the short game, bunkers, putting and then maybe a playing lesson with them. It is a great example of “giving back”.
April was a busy month for our Seniors - starting with the travel league event at Copper River on 4/15, followed by one at Merced G&CC on 4/17 - but what the hell, you got the 16th off. As you know, we award prizes at the end of the year for first thru third finishes in the travel league and other Senior events. The front runners thru the Merced trip were: Kurt Smith 23.5 points, Mike Hurst 21 points, Jim Rodgers 19.5

Barbara Scott has been working on our annual Road Trip scheduled for Sunday, June 28th. She has reserved tee times at Pheasant Run Golf Course in Chowchilla starting at 10:30 and will have a late lunch following the tournament.
The sign up sheet will posted in the Pro-Shop soon, so be sure to watch for it!
FYI: Our President, Jim had a “milestone” Birthday in April so if you see him around the course be sure to congratulate him.
We hope that you can come out and enjoy the camaraderie and the golf course by participating in a fun game of golf with the Couples Club.

The Men’s Board which was held March 26th had 19 participants and was followed by the Spring General meeting. The tournament was individual scores with Deb Duley winning overall low gross and Lisa Braun overall low net. They will have their names engraved on the Men’s Board Trophy plaque. As predicted, April was a busy month. We started with the Intra-club tournament scheduled for April 7th and 9th. Unfortunately, the weather didn’t cooperate and the first round was canceled due to rain. We did, however, have 28 ladies participate
on April 9th. Sandie Ford, captain of the San Diego Padres was unable to participate. Our condolences to Sandie on the loss of her father on April 7th. Kris Oliveira, captain the San Francisco Giants, stepped in and hosted a wonderful tournament. Our first “official” Guest day was held on April 16. There was a 9:00 shotgun from the Combo tees followed by a delicious lunch and prizes. The format was Stableford (point par), 2 best ball of the foursome.

The Road Trip happening on April 30th will be reported on next month. The course is Eagle Springs, the shotgun is 9:30 and lunch will be in Friant after golf. Alan and Ali are determined not to lose two years in a row so the challenge has been issued. Check out the next issue of the Divot to see how they do.
Party Day will be held June 4 and will support The Valley Animal Center Free/Low Cost Spay ad Neuter Campaign. Adriana Valdivia is chairing the event and has planned for an 8:30 Shamble, Bridge at 9:30, followed by
lunch, prizes, raffles, and more surprises at 1:00. She will be selling tickets for a 60/40 raffle on Memorial Day from 8:30am to 1:00pm and the winner will be drawn that day at 1:30 pm. As more information becomes available, we will keep you updated via email and the Fort web site. There is a sign up posted in the locker room for raffle and silent auction donations.
We have had some bad luck with our Open Days, Belmont, Copper River and San Joaquin have all been canceled due to lack of participants. If we don’t support these Open Days we may lose them and that would be a shame. They are great fun and there are some amazing golf courses available to play. For those of you that are new to Open Days, give Hilda Duckering a call. She will be happy to walk you through the process of signing up for any in which you are interested.
If you are just getting started or know of a member that would like to “take up the game”, contact Linda Rose, our new Welcoming/9 Hole Chairperson. If you haven’t played for a while and want to get back into the game, you’re welcome to join the 9-Hole group. They normally get together for 9 holes every Thursday. They will also be scheduling some clinics later in the year.

• Over-all financial operations continue to perform better than budget.
• Outside event revenues slightly below the 15% maximum allowable to the Club as a non-profit operation.
• Anticipate delivery of new cart fleet by early June. Based on new 5-year loan to finance purchase and sale of prior units, CFO does not anticpate need for increase to cart fee. Carts will have GPS included for a free 90-day trial. If membership decides to retain the GPS service, CFO

• Average daily rounds in March – 105; total rounds January – 2,729.
• Tree planting on course to commence in May with trees from nursery and recent purchases (12 large oak and several 15-gallon eucalyptus). No plans to replace nursery trees immediately.
• Well by old maintenance shed requiring $24,000 repair and should be functioning in a few weeks.
• Golf course consultant very impressed with current condition and firmly recommended Fort purchase new state of art “spray rig” for the fairways as he had in his prior year end report. MSC (Parker/Duly) – approve purchase subject to Director of Golf and CFO joint approval after review of costs and finance options.

by Monday, June 1st, at 5pm. The slate this year consists of Barbara Anderson-Basila, Bill Bakos,
Jim Parker III, Rich Rodriguez, Greg Tonnelsan and Pete Zeitler. The Board would like to thank the nominating committee Bill Becker (Chairman), Mel Dedekian, Ron Aoki, Jay Beckstead and Kurt Smith for their hard work in selecting this year’s candidates. The board this year received two petitions in accordance with Section 8.2 of the by-laws. Scott Buss and Mike Springer will be added to this year’s ballet. Good luck to all candidates.
The remaining sprinkler controllers have been installed. We will continue to cut back our watering to the golf course without jeopardizing playing conditions.
There are lots of activities planned for May. Please check the event calendar and sign up early. You don’t want to be left out.
New carts have been ordered and we expect delivery sometime in June. These carts will be equipped with two GPS programs. The first program will allow us to monitor where carts are to be driven. The second program is the course yardage. This feature will be on a 90 day trail period. The membership will vote to either keep the yardage program or get rid of it. If the membership agrees to keep the program, there will be a $2.00 increase in cart fees. If after 90 days the membership decides to eliminate the yardage program, cart fees will remain at the current rate. Thanks to Dean Pryor along with Alan for negotiating a new loan which enables us to keep the current
fee structure.
Tournament season is here. Check the Pro Shop for dates and times and join in the fun.
Solar Update: Two structures are up and four to go. This month’s work schedule is very busy. Please be cautious whenever passing through the area. The project remains on schedule with completion towards the end of July. Again, thank you for your patience.
