In the state of Judea in southern Africa, violence, poverty and sectarianism are endemic.

The neighbouring Alliance has invaded to restore ‘peace’ at gunpoint. Bloody street battles accompany theneighbouring dictatorship’s incursion into its weaker satellite. Promises of a transition to open democratic ruleaccompany summary executions and brutal massacres.

As the civil war reaches a new level, a divine child is born to a lowly couple. As he grows and witnesses theinhumanity of the world he lives in, his angelic guardians offer him an escape to the heavens. He refuses.This is his world and he must try to save it from the work of evil men and from the darkness working throughthem.

As an adult, he travels to the capital, gathering followers from the armed factions of rebels that criss-cross theland. He demands that his followers give up their guns and confront their corrupt rulers with a vision of non-violent protest and solidarity. Inevitably, he attracts the attention of the Judean tribal leaders who have struck apower-sharing deal with the aloof Governor Pilate.

Filmed in the township of Khayelitsha and in the Eastern Cape, this new and adventurous interpretation of theChristian message was filmed by Mark Dornford-May (Golden Bear, Berlin 2005 – U-Carmen) with thepioneering DDK theatre troupe and choir network. As with his first film – the classic opera Carmen translatedinto the Xhosa tongue - their original yet traditional dance, songs and rhythms infuse Son of Man with its owndistinctive voice.

The Vietnam war ended four years ago. Reagan has just announced his intention to stand for President withGeorge Bush as his running mate on a ticket of ‘Peace through Strength’. The U.S. military kicks into actionwith a huge injection of finance and the U.S.S.R is starting to lose the cold war.

Meanwhile on Qangattarsa military base, Rudy Spruance is lost. Dropped off in the middle of no-where in thefrozen wastes of the arctic. No one comes except a huge and deadly swarm of mosquitoes. As he comesround later in an Army hospital that doesn’t officially exist, Rudy understands what it is to be on the sharp endof a ‘small clerical error’.

‘You’ll want to scratch,’ the nurse tells him helpfully when he comes round.

‘Don’t.’ advises the orderly.

Rudy joined up to escape a little prison time for burglary. His fellow soldiers are a rag-tag bunch of misfits andeccentrics who seem to have been on the base for a considerable time. There’s people-shy Chaplain Brank,who keeps switching religion. There’s Lavone, a wannabe poet who is addicted to Benzedrine and thinkssci-fi movies are the pinnacle of art.

And there’s the base’s commanding officer, Colonel Woolwrap, an ever-so-slightly crazed maverick whosees in Rudy a younger version of himself. Only problem is, Rudy isn’t too comfortable under his, oranyone’s, tutelage.

But then Rudy meets Sergeant Irene Teale - beautiful, intelligent and most importantly, sane. Unfortunately,she’s the Colonel’s girlfriend.

As Rudy pursues Irene, he uncovers the secret of The Wing: a hospice for American casualties from one ofWoolwrap’s reckless missions in the Vietnam war.

It is a curiously tranquil place, a cross between a gentlemen’s club and a hospice. The ‘patients’ in the Wingare drugged unconscious, fed through tubes, and kept secret from the world. They are to be kept secret untilthe very end of their lives.

Woolwrap has been sitting in Qangatarrssa waiting for the last of his men to pass away. Meanwhile, the‘patients’ remain unconscious, vegetative, erased as the men they once were.

We are floating above red clouds but beneath the heavenly skies. Thousands upon thousands of strings aresuspended from the infinity above us down through the clouds below. We follow a single string through theclouds to where it ends on the Kharo’s hand. The Kharo, the country’s king, is writing a farewell letter to hisson, Hal Tara, to whom he is entrusting the throne in the hope that Hal Tara will be able to achieve that whichhe himself could not: making peace.

With this hope, the Kharo draws his sword, severs his head-string, and dangles lifelessly from his remainingstrings. Until his brother, Nezo, steps out of the shadows, throws away the farewell letter, and severs the restof his strings.

Hal Tara sets out to find his father’s murderer that his uncle, Nezo, leads him to believe is the leader of theirlong-term enemy: The Zerits. Disguised as a simple peasant Hal journeys out into the world of which he, son ofthe Kharo, has seen very little.

Hal is taken prisoner by the the Zerits. Sahro, the Zerit commander with the terrifying mask, is the personupon whom Hal is determined to have his revenge. But he is nowhere to be seen, and within the camp Halfalls in love with a beautiful woman. In the morning, when he follows her in secret, he discovers somethinghorrible when she puts on her armor and mask: the woman he loves is Sahro, the leader of the Zerits! Hisfather’s murderer.

Hal escapes. In love, filled with hatred and confused he collapses in the desert. Here he’s taken prisoner byhis own people’s slave collectors, but as he set out in disguise to shield his identity, the brutal slave collectorscan’t recognise him either and bring him to the slave ship.

On his way home in captivity, the truth begins to dawn on him. The enemy is himself.

Meanwhile, the Hebalon troops are on their way to oppose Sahro’s army and Hal must escape in time tosave both his people and the enemy he grew up hating. And rescue the woman he loves; a love which hastaught him that all life is interconnected.

Strings is a fantasy film about being controlled and connected. Since the beginning of time marionettes haveprovoked these existential considerations within Man, but besides being used thematically, the strings alsoplay an active part in the plot.

Ottar Thor is the star player of Icelandic football team KR. He is a well liked player who causes a stir when headmits to being gay to his team mates and then goes on a journey to discover himself (with the help of thelocal press).

He soon finds himself on the bench for most of his team’s matches and decides to call it quits with KR. Hejoins a small amateur team mainly made up of men like himself - gay guys trying to play football in a straightworld.

The director of KR happens to be Ottar Thor’s dad. Ottar Thor finally gives into his father and returns to KR onthe condition that KR play one match against the gay team. His father accepts this condition, not knowingthat the match will take place on Gay Pride Day...

In the late 1980’s, a sleepy military post on the Macedonian-Albanian border is continuing on with its work.

Its routine is interrupted when Lieutenant Imre Nagy feels strange pains in his nether parts. He seeks helpfrom the only doctor among the soldiers, Sinisa. The doctor conducts the necessary embarrassingexamination and diagnoses syphilis.

Nagy has a problem: he cannot go home to his wife now. So he invents a war. He declares a state ofemergency and informs the soldiers that the Albanians have moved their troops close to the border and arepreparing an attack. Nagy orders that no one, including himself, can leave the base. But not everyone believeshis story. Another young soldier, the streetwise Ljuba Karanovic is suspicious. Having never liked Nagy, Ljubacomes up with his own scheme to get himself off the post and make a fool out of Nagy at the same time.

But their sad pasts lead to them todiscover that this is not all they have in common. They have both been widowed and because of theirupheaval they share the belief that survivors such as themselves should have the right to be returned homefor burial. As their love affair grows, they establish a cemetry to show that old hatreds are now dead. Theyarrange for survivors to be buried in their original country but as the money rolls in, their good intentionsbecome corrupted and they must fight to keep their vision intact.

Film and Music Entertainment have pacted withSouth African lyric theatre company Dimpho diKhopane (DDK) and their film production bannerSpier Films in a long term production alliance toproduce in the initial period three feature films set, aswith their Golden Bear winning Carmen, in thetownship of Khayeltisha on the outskirts of CapeTown.

The next film project, Son of Man, represents thecreative re-uniting of former theatre colleagues,Dornford-May and Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliot, TheHours), who in the eighties worked together on aslew of theatre projects.

Son Of Man premiered in the World CinemaDramatic Competition at the Sundance Film Festival2006.

The second project in the line up will be announcedin the Spring of 2006 and will be another adaptationof a major European piece of music theatre giventhe DDK treatment under the musical directorship ofCharles Hazlewood. Shooting is planned forSummer/Autumn 2006.

In sealing this long term creative and commercialdeal with DDK, and Mark, we have coincidentallyput the “music” back into Film and MusicEntertainment. South Africa is a new emerging forcein world cinema, and we are delighted to be able tomake a contribution, not only to this phenomenon,

but to provide DDK with a strong internationalproduction base.
