Singer/Songwriter/Guitarist

Sonny Mone is a former member of Crazy Horse, Neil Young's erstwhile backup band. He worked extensively with the band when they were not working with Young.

As a singer/songwriter/guitarist, he is currently performing solo acoustic shows throughout greater Southern California. Mone has also produced music for television, film, and video games. Combining his musical experiences including acoustic rock, the Crazy Horse garage sound, and other influences, he has created a unique music catalogue.

President Susan Murata opened the meeting, introducing Felix

Masci who introduced Peter Winfield for the invocation and salute to the Flag. Dan Overton led us in singing America the Beautiful.

Bob Biery introduced the visiting Rotarians and guests. The Rotarians today were Rick Lemmo, our Honorary Past President; and Gregg Burt of Simi Valley. Our guests today are Bob Engler, guest of Sue Engler; Robbie Gluckson, guest of Bradley Kraines; Jeff Gorell and Ernie Villegas, our program today; Anita Contini, guest of Mario and Patty Contini; Theresa Elkins, guest of Tammie Helmuth; Eric Barrone, guest of Peter Turpel; and Juan Garcia, guest of Hugo Roche.

President Susan said that we have 136 members, just 14 away from our goal of 150 members by April 1st. To propose a new member, see Hugo Roche.

She noted that his past weekend she attended the District public relations and membership seminar, and thanked Tamara Campbell, Carol Freeman,

Richard Williams and Monica Walker for also attending.

President Susan awarded a Perfect Attendance pin to Mario Diaz – 8 years of perfect attendance, 11 years a Rotarian.

She then informed us that Norm Nagel is home from the hospital and resting; he hopes to be back at Rotary next week. Lyn Perry’s surgery is scheduled for tomorrow.

We were sad to hear Susan announce that Courtney Wood is leaving the club due to time constraints.

Announcements:

Joani Pappas announced that the Midsummer’s Eve Wine Festival is 2½ weeks away – on August 18th. A special thank-you to Tammie

Helmuth, who donated 500 champagne flutes to the event. She has also done a $300 basket and a $500 with Doug Tapking for the silent auction.

Joani "put on another hat" and pointed out the signup sheets on the table for the District Governor’s dinner on August 22nd.

Chris Steele has the season tickets for Cabrillo Music Theater for those who ordered them. If you would like to subscribe or have additional tickets, our group price will be valid until the season opens on October 26th.

Nancy Wohl reminded us that the two free clinics are on August 8th and she still needs helpers. The morning session is the Conejo Clinic from 9 – 11 a.m. and Westminster Clinic from 5:30 – 8 p.m. Thanks to Tammie and Dan Overton for donating items for the garage sale there.

Lois Curran-Klein said that we have some really great auction items, but we still need more. Thanks to Dave Friedl for sending an email blast about it. They are looking for baskets with items worth $75 or more; or if you would like to write a check for $75, they will assemble a basket for you. The deadline is approximately this weekend.

Jeff Bornstein confirmed that President Susan said that to propose a new member, talk to Hugo Roche.

Tamara Campbell (1) thanked President Susan for her Paul Harris award; (2 Tamara's nephew, David Boudia, won the bronze medal at the Olympics in synchronized platform diving for the USA this week; first men’s medal since 1996. He will be competing in the 10-meter individual race on August 11th, and they are hoping for another medal.

Ed Jones plugged the Hillcrest Theater Group that trains at their center. They will be putting on Cabaret this Saturday and Sunday at the Scherr Forum.

Maria Sanchez contributed ecstatic dollars because she closed escrow and sold her company yesterday; she is starting a new chapter. She celebrated last night at Mastro's, and she leaves on Sunday on her Harley for Sturges, SD, doing 4,000 miles in ten days.

Tanya Caligiuri called attention to the two T-shirts she displayed, from the Olympics when held in Los Angeles in 1984 – 28 years ago.

Steve Pederson’s golf day was yesterday. As usual, he donates half his earning to his wife, and the other half to Rotary. Today is pleased to be able to put $20 in the cup. He also welcomed Robert Bianchi back.

Hugo Roche reminded Maria Sanchez that the roads are too small for trailers in South Dakota.

Shane Pierson thanked Tim Weaver, Matt Morrison and Ron Call for helping him with some “difficulties” with his employer.

Paul Harris Awards

Robert Bianchi, Chair of the Foundation Committee, said that the first committee meeting of the year will be Tuesday, August 21st, lunch at his office.

Steve Pederson joined Robert, and together they awarded the following Paul Harris Fellows. Robert thanked Steve Boggs, John Bradley and Tim Weaver for their help in organizing.

Susan Murata presented the awards to Russ Cornwall, Tamara Campbell and Tom Hare. These were given in their names by another member of Rotary.

Steve Pederson presented their first Paul Harris awards to John Dokken, Steve Boggs, Sue

Engler and Herb Gooch (who is on leave). Patty Contini received two: both her own first award, and well as one donated by Mario Contini.

Steve presented the multiple-winner Paul Harris awards to Rick Lemmo, his fourth; Matt

Morrison, his fourth; Rick Principe, his third; Mario Contini, his fourth and fifth; Don Moors, his ninth; Richard Williams, his eighth and ninth. Furthermore, Richard is also a new Major Donor.
