T he Super 5-in-1 Taipei Internation- al Food Show opened Wednes- day featuring innovations in food safety technology, healthy diets and next generation food.The show is establish- ing itself this year as a platform to integrate food cultures from the West and the East. Up to 36 national pavilions have been set up, featuring delicacies from China, Japan, South Korea, the U.S. and Latin America, among others. The Taiwan Pavilion showcases certified and high-quality agricultural products from the island. The aim is to present the fresh- est food of Taiwan that has been processed by modern Western technologies, said the event organizer. As the show also showcases food pack- aging equipment, the adoption of the latest smart machinerycan also be seen at the event. This goes in tandem with the governments industrial upgrade initiative, said Peter W.J. Huang, president and CEO of the Taiwan External Trade Development Council, the organizer of the exhibition. Innovation, research and developmentare pivotal elements in Taiwans machinery industry, Huang said. May Wang, vice chairwoman of the Tai- wan Packaging Association, concurred with this assessment, saying at the exhibitions opening ceremony that Taiwan should adopt Industry 4.0and integrate more automation and smart technologies. This is essential if Taiwan is to compete effectively in the global market, Wang said. As food safety has become a hot-bottom issue in Taiwan, the government has set up a pavilion specifically designed to ad- dress this national concern. Vice Economics Minister Yang Wei-fu said in his opening address that the Ministry of Economic Af- fairs has offered assistance to small- and medium-sized companies in various forms including legal consultations to ensure food safety. The government will give its strong back- ing to the food industry to ensure the least negative impact arising from food safety issues, Yang said. The local food industry has entered uncharted waters, as food exports to China dropped by more than 30 percent in the first five months of this year. It is indicative of the rise of Chinas red supply chain,remarked Robert Ouyoung, chairman of the Taiwan Food & Pharmaceutical Machinery Manufac- turersAssociation. T he Super 5-in-1 Taipei Internation-al Food Show opened Wednes-day featuring innovations in food

safety technology, healthy diets and “next generation food.” The show is establish-

ing itself this year as a platform to integrate food cultures from the West and the East. Up to 36 national pavilions have been set up, featuring delicacies from China, Japan, South Korea, the U.S. and Latin America,

among others. The Taiwan Pavilion showcases certifi ed

and high-quality agricultural products from the island. The aim is to present the fresh-est food of Taiwan that has been processed

by modern Western technologies, said the event organizer.

As the show also showcases food pack-aging equipment, the adoption of the latest “smart machinery” can also be seen at the event. This goes in tandem with the government’s industrial upgrade initiative, said Peter W.J. Huang, president and CEO of the Taiwan External Trade Development Council, the organizer of the exhibition. “Innovation, research and development” are pivotal elements in Taiwan’s machinery industry, Huang said.

May Wang, vice chairwoman of the Tai-wan Packaging Association, concurred with this assessment, saying at the exhibition’s opening ceremony that Taiwan should adopt “Industry 4.0” and integrate more automation and smart technologies. This is essential if Taiwan is to compete effectively in the global market, Wang said.

As food safety has become a hot-bottom issue in Taiwan, the government has set up a pavilion specifi cally designed to ad-dress this national concern. Vice Economics Minister Yang Wei-fu said in his opening address that the Ministry of Economic Af-fairs has offered assistance to small- and medium-sized companies in various forms including legal consultations to ensure food safety.

The government will give its strong back-ing to the food industry to ensure the least negative impact arising from food safety issues, Yang said.

The local food industry has entered uncharted waters, as food exports to China dropped by more than 30 percent in the fi rst fi ve months of this year. It is indicative of the rise of China’s “red supply chain,” remarked Robert Ouyoung, chairman of the Taiwan Food & Pharmaceutical Machinery Manufac-turers’ Association. The Central Bank could use exchange rate tools to make Taiwan’s exports more competitive, Ouyoung sug-gested. ■

A t fi rst glance, Taiwan may seem like a small country, but those that know the beauty

of Taiwan understand Formosa has much more to offer. This year, the Taiwan Pavilion challenges tradition by portraying the products through simplistic structure and organization. The exhibitions, taking full advantage of the diverse geography of Taiwan, showcases an array of Taiwanese dishes in three different areas: “10 innovative products,” “TGA” (Taiwan Good Agricultural) products and “10 products with great potential.”

Yu-Hsin Chang, specialist of the International Marketing of Council of Agriculture, noted that the “10 innovative products” were selected from a pool of 77 products, and the 10 fi nalists represent products with the most unique features. The Joy & Hope, one of the “10 innovative products,” invented what would become known to-day as rice pasta. Rice pasta is created by forming spiral-shaped pastas with grains. This rice pasta utilizes the surplus rice in Taiwan, making it into pasta in order to target foreign markets. Rice pasta also boasts many clear advantages over its coun-terpart wheat pasta: Rice pasta is capable of being cooked faster and due to its fast cooking time, uses less electricity or gas.

One of the areas in Taiwan Pavilion, “10 products with great potential” presents a selection of local dishes that best represent Taiwanese culture, including beans, tea, mullet, rice, grains, fruit and vegetables, and more. The exhibition allows for Taiwan to truly shine, and displays Taiwan’s specialties in a clear and organized manner, which allows for easy access to all the dishes and products Taiwan has to offer. This exhibition in Taiwan allows for the showcase of local agricultural food products that have potential in overseas markets. ■

T he France National Pavilion is based on two main themes: promoting the French dining culture and sharing experience and expertise in food safety and traceability management. Numerous renowned French agro-food

brands are on display at the pavilion, which offers many products, including a variety of brands of processed meats, cheeses, baking ingredients and more. A French bistro, which has been incorporated into the pavilion, offers exclusive culinary demonstrations performed by chefs from STAY and Le Cordon Bleu, and is a welcoming environment for anyone wanting to enjoy a relaxing French atmosphere.

FICT, a French professional association with more than 200 members, special-izes in the processed meat (charcuterie) industry, and will showcase their hams, sausages, terrines and more. They pride themselves on the selectivity and French origins of their ingredients, including local salt and spices,

and hope to further introduce French meats to Taiwan.In addition, in light of the recent food safety-related scandals, the establishment of the

Appellation d’Origine Protégée (AOP), which controls the origin of products and ensures their quality and fresh-

ness, will share its expertise during a seminar, titled “Food Safety,

Traceability and Labels of Qual-ity for French Food Products: Applied to the case of French

This year, Germany shares a part of its food culture that it hopes will be just as embraced. DrOko displays an array of foods sure to help Germany fi nd a perma-nent foothold. With a determined focus on nutrition, the German Pavilion presents 100-percent organic juices, nuts and seeds, dried fruit and grains, and the newest “superfoods” to partner with their classic wines.

Furthermore, Gerolsteiner, the biggest sparkling water company worldwide, brings volcanically fi ltered water that boasts the highest mineral content. According to Managing Director Anton Melchers of Gerolsteiner, the fi rm also intends to “test out new and experimental products on the Taiwanese market.”

With such a promising combination of health and name recognition, Germany is sure to see expansion in the Taiwanese market. ■

德國酒商Winzone今年首次參加台北食品展,但去年已經參加過台北國際酒

展。他們在展中展示白酒和粉紅玫瑰酒,想帶給觀展人「清涼一夏」的暢快感受。

Winzone上次參展的經驗很成功,因此也將在24日於德國國家館舉行「啤酒無限暢飲

活動」。

今年,德國與台灣分享它飲食傳統的另一部分,希望會一樣受歡迎。Dr. öko公

司產出健康食物系列。專注於健康養生的Dr.Oko產品包括百分百有機的果汁、堅

果、水果乾、「超級食品」等等來搭配德國的傳統酒品。

除此之外,Gerolsteiner,世上最大的蘇打水公司,今年也加入德國國家館中一

齊展出。他們的蘇打水來自德國火山區,含有高度礦物質。根據處長馬安同表示,

shares its experience of reforming food regulations and establish-ing a thorough traceability system for products, explained Rik Van Droogenbroeck, director of the Belgian Offi ce, Taipei.

Best-known for chocolate, beer and waffl es, Belgium’s Pavilion presents an assortment of food products that guarantee food safety as well as tasti-ness. With summer arriving, Gouden Carolus presents a series of fruit-fl avored beers ranging from strawberry and apple to berries. With customized waffl e machines and a recipe modifi ed to suit the humid climate here, Jason Lee of Le Bar Coffee and Elias Kazi, managing director of Food and Beverage Business, collaborate to cre-ate authentic waffl es that will transfer you to Belgium in a bite. Jane Hung, general manager of Glacio Ice Cream, shared the company’s new product, “Special Portion Ice Cream,” which can be served with simple garnishing right out of the tub and is targeted at restaurants and hotels.

“Greatly interested in breaking into Taiwan’s market, many of our poultry compa-nies have toured the show this morning, eagerly seeking opportunities to collaborate with Taiwanese companies to import pork and other poultry products,” said Van Droogenbroeck on the future plans of the Belgian Offi ce, Taipei. ■

T o satisfy growing demand for healthy and natural foodstuffs by consumers in Taiwan, more than 20 American exhibitors are gathering at the USA Pavilion to showcase a wide variety of quality and healthy foods.

Among the exhibits are blueberries containing anti-oxidation anthocyanin, Wisconsin ginseng featuring saponin and polysaccharides, and barley with abundant dietary fi ber, which can all be used in various applications. In addition, you will fi nd Idaho Fingerling Potatoes and Russet Burbank Potatoes, both highly popular with high-end restaurants in the U.S., as well as a wide range of natural cheeses.

With 2016 marking the 100th year of the commercially cultivated blueberry crop in the U.S., the U.S. Highbush Blueberry Council has staged a comeback after years of hiatus. Recognizing the good sales potential for blueberries in Taiwan, the council expects to cooperate with Taiwanese importers to ship more processed blueberry products to the country.

LOHAS, an acronym for Lifestyles of Health and Sustainability, has become one of the most popular catchwords in Taiwan: It means that health, simplicity and environmental pro-tection not only constitute a new trend but also suggest unlimited business opportunities. A designated pavilion has been set up at

the food show by the Executive Yuan

to address the nation’s food safety issue

-- the Offi ce of Food Safety. Through the

exhibition, the governments wants to relay to

the public the concrete measures that will be

taken to ensure food safety, said Kang Jaw-

jou, director general of the Offi ce of Food

Safety at the Executive Yuan.

An important step is information

sharing. For instance, the Ministry of

Education that is responsible for student

meals will collaborate closely with the

Ministry of Health and Welfare that conducts

food inspections. Integration between the

two ministries’ databases will ensure that the

source of student meals is safe, Kang said.

In addition, there will be information sharing

between the Ministry of Economic Affairs, the Council of

Agriculture, the Finance Ministry and the Environmental

Protection Agency. Information shared will be related to

food sourcing, food processing and food transaction data. ■

Fresh seafood provider Tan Hou, known for its quality and

luxurious taste, has launched premium sliced fi sh packets

to satisfy the appetites of seafood fans young and old. CEO

King Tsai said the fi rm has acquired Japanese technology to

freeze and transport the fi sh at ultra-low temperatures (ULT),

which helps to ensure cells remain intact and results in the

highest quality in freshness and taste.

“We insist on using no chemicals. Instead, we bathe the

fi sh,” said Tsai. All water that comes into contact with the fi sh

is purifi ed water, while any parasites are easily removed by

manipulating water pressure. Tsai added that it is hard to cut

costs with the standards of quality the fi rm wishes to uphold,

but it will nonetheless seek to take innovative leaps -- as they

did when they launched sliced fi sh packets after 12 years in

business -- to make “good things available to all.” ■

Taitung County Government joins the trade fair for the

fi rst time this year, to present the fi nest specialties

from the county. The exhibition space is designed with

wooden textures and other natural elements, allowing

visitors to feel as if they are walking in the breeze and

summer sun in Taitung.

Visitors can also savor the real tastes of Taitung

through the products on display at the booth, including

Taitung-styled oolong tea, roselle vinegar, rice and turmeric

products, deep ocean water products, organic wine and

coffee — all products created by 12 local businesses in

Taitung. Offi cials said the impression consumers have of

Taitung’s agricultural products is that they are natural,

healthy and pure. The show also highlights Taitung

This year, Taitung-based sustainable foods brand

Natural Tasty features low-fat malt sugar candy and

classic English Steam Bread, crafted with a Taiwanese

culinary twist. The dough is fermented from a 1:1 Golden

Mix of fl our with mashed sweet potatoes or native red

quinoa, explained Natural Tasty CEO Joanna Lee. She

added nutritionists believe

sweet potatoes are one of

nature’s truly perfect foods,

and compared red

quinoa to the glistening ruby among grains: “Eating bread

is like eating sweet potatoes or red quinoa,” she said.

Another highlighted product is candy made with

malt sugar as its main ingredient. Combining other fl avors

including red quinoa, pine nuts, sesame and other premium

nuts, using 45-percent less sugar than traditional methods

would require. Lee divides her time between developing

sustainable baking technology, helping farmers reduce

waste and supporting the local food industry, as Taitung

becomes a base for a booming natural food revolution. ■

It is almost impossible to miss Fun Sun’s booth at the food show. Spot the one with a sleek Mercedes-

Benz S350 parked in front? This is to highlight how local poultry supplier Fun Sun organized their

chicken meat into different classes, in the fashion of the German automobile manufacturer. This year,

all eyes are on their premium product — the succulent and tender S-class chicken, which had once been

served to make chicken soup at a national banquet.

Executive Assistant Li-hua Yu said the chickens are “elites” selected from millions of breeds,

then separated into three classes — S, E and C — according to length of cultivation. Su added Fun

Sun insists that killing of all the chickens uses the halal method. Their self-made poultry feed ensures

chickens enjoy healthy digestion, while no more than three chickens are kept one ping of land. ■

Fans of lychee fruit are bound to go crazy for the Dense

Oven Roasted Lychee Jam, this year’s featured Taiwan

Fruit Star product — a fruit jam and fi lling brand from Science

Biotechnology Company. Black leaf lychees were used in

pastries made by the famed Taiwan-born chef Wu Pao-chun,

sparking international interest in the fruit. Taiwan Fruit Star

boasts the use of black leaf lychees of the same quality as those

used by master pastry chefs, carefully selecting the fruit from

quality farms in Changhua.

The entire lychee is roasted for 72 hours at low temperature,

then hand-peeled from its shell, de-seeded, and boiled in sucrose,

Fruit Star insists on using fruit untainted by heavy metals and

產品「窯烤荔枝果蜜」,嚴選來自彰化芬園鄉的黑葉

荔枝,採收後再以手工熬煮出天然的果醬。全果經 72小

opportunities the exhibition will bring, since the show is

tailor-designed for professionals in the industry. She said

that DIGI Taiwan can serve as a one-stop shop for all of its

customers’ food packaging needs.

DIGI Taiwan products can also address food safety

issues. Many of the labels are fed with food sourcing data

retrieved from the Council of Agriculture. Buyers will fi nd

a wealth of information on the food that they purchase and

ensure their own food safety, Ho said. Established in Taiwan

more than 30 years ago, DIGI Taiwan imports machinery

from Japan and has customers ranging from supermarkets

and restaurants to food processing firms and airport duty-

free stores. ■

受經濟部工業局委託,食藥機械公會今年首次舉

辦的「智慧機械評選」於週三登場!其中有四

間業者在決選時脫穎而出,分別為生技製藥廠

「元成機械」、食品機械龍頭「安口」、「永順利」與

「陽政機械」。獲獎名次將於食品展最後一天6月24日

(星期五)下午3:00揭曉。

食藥機械公會總幹事陳勝地表示,比賽配合政府推

動的「生產力4.0計畫」鼓勵我國製造業者走向升級轉

型,站在趨勢浪頭上搶佔市場先機!

他認為今年參賽廠商雖然和「生產力4.0」的理想仍

存有距離,但方向都是正確的,「天下所有事,方向最

重要。政府執政也是相同的道理,策略再好,方向錯了

即步步錯。」

當天評審及台大生物產業機電工程系教授李允中認

為,台灣食品加工產業若邁向「生產力4.0」可有效提升

利潤與生產線整體效率,更能節省資源浪費。他也建議

政府針對食品加工,「量身打造」適合此產業的人才培

育。

黃世榮博士表示「擷取數據才有辦法談優化」,

而立即上傳數據資料就能和上下游廠商即時修正出貨問

題,更加整合夥伴體系的資源。現今已有國內食品加工

業者達「生產力3.5」,技術甚至領先亞洲。

精密機械研究發展中心 (PMC) 副處長廖茂欽認為

重要的是「讓已經是80分的業者知道,可透過改善看不

到的問題,從80分變成90分。」 ■

F our local food processing machine manufacturers emerged from a pool of can-

didates in the fi rst contest of its kind at the Taipei International Food Show. Judges arrived at Nangang Exhibition Hall to listen to presentations, praising the companies — Yenchen, ANKO, Yung Soon Lih, Yang Jenq Machinery Works — for taking major steps to-ward “Manufacturing Productivity 4.0.”

Manufacturing Productivity 4.0 initia-tives seek to upgrade manufacturing from automation to smart produc-tion, guiding businesses to advance toward developing high-added-value products.

Organizers from the Taiwan Food & Pharmaceutical Machinery Manufac-turers’ Association (TFPMA) said they hosted the competition on behalf of the Ministry of Economic Af-fairs, as a part of the government’s push to upgrade and boost global competitiveness for the local food industry.

The chief executive offi cer of TFPMA said though there remains some distance until today’s contestants reach the standards defi ned under Manufacturing Productivity 4.0, they

are nonetheless making strides in the right direction. “Good strategies are of no use if the direction is wrong. It is the same with governing a country. For everything in the world, direction is most important.” Competition results are scheduled to be an-nounced at 3 p.m. on Friday, the last day of this year’s Interna-tional Food Show. ■

‘Food Sourcing’ exceeds receiving praise and awe

食品通路商採購大會 卓越成績 倍受推崇 F oreign buyers attending “Food Sourc-

ing in Taiwan 2016” on the fi rst day of Food Taipei were amazed with the

enthusiasm, opportunity, and professionalism of the event. Returning buyers who attended past years’ events expressed their satisfaction for such a well-organized procurement meet-ing; fi rst-year customers were also amazed by the scale of the 5-in-1 super food show.

Sebastian Wijaya, founder of PT Seroya Mandiri, is a fi rst-year attendee at Food Taipei, and is hoping to fi nd good suppliers of instant food for the Indonesian Market. “I am very impressed with the level of organization Food Taipei presents. The venue was also really good.” He hopes to fi nd high-quality products at this event. Another newcomer to Food Sourcing in Taiwan at Food Taipei is Yan Rui from Shangxi Meetall Supermarket. Yan Rui highly praised the Food Sourcing event and was happy with the new sources and suppliers she has access to.

Not only were newcomers pleased with their experiences at Food Sourcing, foreign buyers who came to Food Sourcing in the past were equally if not even more impressed at this year’s venue. “I am very satisfi ed with Food Taipei this year. It showed good organization, as well as a high level of preparation such that it was easy for buyers to look for the supplies they need,” said Jing Lin, purchaser of Heu-schen & Schrouff Oriental Foods Trading. While Jing Lin searched for suppliers of authen-

tic Chinese ingredients, Yoshiyuki Kitazawa, general manager of Purchase Department, K.K. Heichinrou, hopes to fi nd a source for local fruits, especially Lychee and Mango. “As lychee and mango are in season in Taiwan, I hope to fi nd suppliers for these fresh fruit.”

Manjeet Singh of Halo Veg Co. visited Taiwan in the past, but attended Food Taipei for the fi rst time this year. His company brings a vast array of alternative meat options to the table, including substitutes for fi sh, chicken, pork, and beef created from wheat protein and soy, mak-

ing him an important voice for an often omitted category of consumers.

Singh was among the many to be impressed by the event’s organization. Though he took minor issue with a lack of suppliers of similar products, he still declared the event “surpassed his expectations.” Olha Khymochka, a business development executive from Selkar Trading F.Z.E., expressed a number of expectations for her fi rst trip to Food Taipei.

She expressed an interest in Taiwanese agriculture, describing it as the heart of Tai-wan, while at the same time hoping to learn more about machinery for juicing and canning purposes. It is a wonderful sign for Taiwan that foreign buyers such as her now have the abil-ity to recognize Taiwan’s traditional strengths while simultaneously investing in its rapidly advancing industry. Khymochka, like others, praised event organiz-ers for their near-fl awless execution.

in Vietnam, displayed some very specifi c inter-ests that refl ect the state of Taiwan’s presence in the global food market. Her desire to search for bubble milk tea products at the show, as well as machinery to assist in the production of instant foods and cakes, refl ects the infl uence displayed by Taiwan’s biggest products. Chu was not only pleased with the structure of the event, but by the range of specialized buyers and consumers with specifi c needs, streamlin-ing her search process.

Munetaka Yamane of Dah Chong Hong Ltd. had some broader, long-term views about the state of the Taiwanese food industry. He be-

lieves Food Taipei is the place to be because Taiwan represents potential, and his efforts

to fi nd fellows in the organic tea business certainly

represent the same. Yamane, while

he did not rave about the event’s organization to the extent

that others did, acknowledged

the professionalism of the staff and other

participants. ■

是PT Seroya Mandiri的創辦人,這是他第

一次參加食品展。「我十分佩服規劃食品

五展單位的能力,」Sebastian Wijaya說

道,「此展的設計和規劃令參加者能輕鬆

找到中意的商品!」他希望能透過食品展

找到適合的冷凍食品供應商並將其引進印

尼市場。山西美特超市的食品採購總監楊

蕊也是第一次參加食品展舉辦的通路商採

購大會。楊蕊對食品展無限的商機感到非

常期待,在第一天過後就給了食品展很高

的評價!

今年的國際食品通路商採購大會同

時滿足了舊業主的期盼和新客戶的需

求,為歷年來的食品展添加了一頁的輝

煌歷史。「我對這屆的採購大會感到十

分滿意,此展的規劃井然有序,買家

可以輕而易舉地找到中意的商品。」

北澤一之跟林靜一樣來台灣尋找亞熱帶

特有的在地品種,這次,北澤一之代表

聘珍樓來採購台灣的荔枝和芒果。「趁

炎炎夏日,我想引進台灣當季的水果

到日本市場,食品展絕對是絕佳的機

會。」

Halo Veg公司的Manjeet Singh曾經

拜訪過台灣,但今年是他第一次參加台

北食品展覽。他的公司使用黃豆蛋白質

來取代肉類,這次帶來很多種替代肉類

食物的食品,包括雞、魚、羊和牛肉。

Singh對於展中展示類似產品的廠商較

少略有意見,但整體來說,他認為整個

展辦得很成功,執行的非常順利。Olha

Khymochka參與食品展也是初體驗。她

對台灣的農業發展特別有興趣,同時也

對台灣的工業有極大興趣,希望會看到

各種做果汁和罐頭的機器。海外買家同

時矚目於農業和工業對台灣來說是一個

好跡象。Khymochka更稱讚近乎完美的

食品五展,感謝主辦單位的用心。

Claire Chu,來自Tan Nhat Huong 有

限公司的進口管理人有幾個很特別的要

求,很幸運地,她的目標都達成了!她

想找台灣最有名的食品:拉麵,珍珠奶

茶和鳳梨酥,除此之外也想尋找即食食

品和烘培蛋糕製程中使用的機械設備。

Claire對食品五展的組織架構、專業買家

及展商都深感敬佩並且印象深刻,她表

示這些都幫助他迅速找到合適的產品。

而來自日本大昌貿易行的次長山根

宗京先生對台灣食品業持深遠的看法,

他認為食品五展是食品業者必到的聖

地,因為台灣具有許多潛力,他也相信

自己能能在台灣找到有機綠茶的同業。
