5 Facts about the Romans

1. Romans adapted a lot of different Greek educational precepts. Children were taught and educated at home where they would pick up Roman law’s, customs and taught about lifestyle. Education was different for boys and girls where as boys where physically trained and educated so that they would eventually be recruited into the Roman army. Girls where educated for more homely purposes and where taught weaving and sewing from their mothers.

2. The Romans spoke and wrote Latin which now days the languages used in most countries is based and developed on. They used many other noticeable words whilst speaking Latin we also use speaking English.

3. The Roman army was very strong. Women could not be in the Roman army only men could be in the army and you had to be a Roman citizen to be in the army. The men in the Roman army could not be married and they had to be at least 20 years old before joining the army. They could not leave the army until they had served the army for 25 years which ended up with them getting a piece of land or a pension at the end.

4. Romans created many things we use today including straight roads and central heating. The elite and rich Romans wanted to be warm and had built in central heating in their houses, villas and public baths. They made the heating by having slaves who kept the fire going in a furnace with hot air, the heating travelled throughout the building and the Romans called the heating system the hypocaust.

5. The Romans believed in many Gods and Goddesses, they Gods were like people however they had incredible strength and magical powers. People were told stories and myths about the Roman Gods and each God and Goddess looked after a certain thing. They believed Saturn was the king of Gods and was the God of seed-sowing. Jupiter was the God of the sky. Juno was Jupiter’s wife and looked after Women. Neptune was Jupiter’s brother and was the God of sea. Minerva was the Goddess of wisdom, Mars was the God of war and Venus was the Goddess of love.
