5. Elijah and Elisha OBJECTIVES: Describe how God took care of Elijah. Show that God is very powerful, but He does not need a storm, or an earthquake or fire to show that He is the Almighty God. He spoke in s still small voice. Then God had a plan for Elisha to take over the work Elijah had done PREPARING FOR THE LESSON: The visual aid looks very attractive if it is printed on light blue cover stock. It could be colored brightly with markers or paint markers. If you don’t have either, small pieces of paper could be glued to depict the fire (such as red, yellow, orange and maybe a little blue). Print the picture story on one color of cover stock. If possible, use five different colors for the graphics the children will be gluing to that page and cut out enough for your class. Give each child five different colors of graphics. For my class (BH) I made a sort of flip page for the names. I cut one piece of cover stock in half lengthwise. I cut one piece in half in the middle. On the long one I carefully printed ELIJAH, making sure the ELI was only on half of the page. Then on the short piece I printed SHA (for ELISHA). I punched two holes in the top through both pieces, and inserted loose leaf rings so I could show students both names. First show the full name ELIJAH. Then flip over the SHA to change the name to ELISHA. LESSON AND ACTIVITIES: First tell how angry King Ahab and his wife were with Elijah. Jezebel wanted to kill him. So Elijah left to get away from them. When he fell asleep, an angel brought special food and water that enabled Elijah to walk 40 day to Mount Horeb. Use the picture story you have put together to help the children learn that part of the lesson. Explain that Elijah went to get Elisha to take his place. After Elisha went with Elijah, God said Elijah would be taken to heaven and would not die. Then show the chariot of fire you have prepared as a visual aid and talk about how amazing it must have been for Elisha to see this happen. Point to the cloak Elijah threw down to Elisha and explain that it meant Elisha would be able to do miracles and serve God just as Elijah had done. Work on the activities together if you think your students need assistance. Even older ones will need you to help read the questions for the multiple-choice, but they should be able to circle the correct picture without assistance. You will also need to read the page with the Word Bank. First show the page, and point to all of the answers as you read them. Students who are in school might be able to print the words if you point to the correct answer after they tell you what belongs in the blank. Some would benefit if you were to color code the page, underlining each word with a different color, and then drawing a line of that same color where each word belongs. This way you could allow some who are a little younger to keep pace with older ones in the same class. Let the children work on the coloring page and/or the gluing activity at their own pace. Make sure little ones know where to glue each picture. The shapes will help them, and if you have done a similar page previously they may already know where to place each picture. SONGS AND PRAYER: This is another lesson that goes well with the song, “My God Is So Big.” Even 2s enjoy doing the motions, and making their arms form muscles showing “strong.” Another one that fits with this lesson is “Rise and Shine.” Sing other favorites as time allows. During the prayer, thank God for the prophets. Pray for any who might be sick in your class, or others your students know. Ask God to help the children obey Him like Elijah and Elisha did.

RWS-PS #253, God’s Prophets

5. Elijah and Elisha 1 Kings 19, 2 Kings 2

Elijah the prophet was hiding from an evil king named Ahab. Once, while Elijah slept, God sent an angel to him. The angel woke Elijah and gave him food and water. After eating this special food, Elijah was able to travel for forty days and forty nights. Elijah went to Mount Horeb.

God told Elijah to come up onto the mountain. God passed by the mountain and a strong wind broke apart rocks and tore the mountain, but God did not speak. Next, God caused an earthquake to shake the mountain, but He did not speak. After the earthquake, God sent a fire but God still did not speak. Finally, Elijah heard a quiet voice. God quietly told Elijah what he should do. God told Elijah to choose a man named Elisha to take his place.

Elijah found Elisha in a field plowing with oxen. Elijah threw his robe over Elisha. Elisha told his father and mother goodbye and prepared a feast.

Then Elijah and Elisha left to serve God together. Elisha loved Elijah, but it was time for Elijah to leave the earth. Elijah did not die. God sent a chariot and horses of fire to take Elijah up in a whirlwind. Elisha was very sad to see Elijah go. Elijah left his robe behind with Elisha, and Elisha used Elijah’s robe as his own.
