The First Word
The 131-Year OldHome of American Philately
This endorsement is not one of those that tells you about the vast number of services and benefits offered by the largest of all national societies for
stamp collectors in America. Many of you are, of course, already members—but we know that a sizable number of you may not have considered joining. I sure hope you do consider it. It’s very much the key to enjoying philately to the fullest!
What I have to say about the APS is brief and concise and goes way beyond telling you what you get for the $45 annual dues that I consider one of the key bargains in our hobby. It’s simply this:
When you are a member of the American Philatelic So-ciety you are part of the greatest social medium ever con-ceived for the philatelist. See for yourself at www.stamps.org.(where you’ll find a membership app) What’s more, I’d be very pleased to propose you for membership, too! Just email me at [email protected]/

In this Issue There are highlights from three important collections in this issue. The “Connecticut River” collection is a study of the essays and proofs prepared for the 12c 1861 issue. It spans the Toppan, Carpenter & Company submission for the contract and the National Bank Note Company “First” and “Second” designs. Next, we have the “Virginia” collec-tion of essays and proofs prepared by National, Continen-tal, and American for the 10c large bank note issue. Finally, a nice group of 19th and 20th century multi-colored advertis-ing covers. The focus of this issue is comprised of selected items from the Masonic cancellation collection formed by the late Raymond W. Koch. It features both on and off cover examples. There are over 500 covers and over 750 stamps. We are offering it on consignment at the direction of Ray’s estate. Inquiries for approval selections are invited.
He was a client and, more importantly, a true friend for over 25 years. I first met Ray at a small show in southern Wisconsin in 1991, where he asked to see any Masonic covers or cancels that I might have. We spent more than an hour talking about his collection. A year later I sold him the masonic cancels from the late Bill Weiss’s 15c large bank note collection along with a spectacular cover that is featured in this newsletter. Our relationship was now off and running. Ray’s pursuit of material for his collection lasted for over 60 years. He bought out of the Carl Peland-er sales in the 1950s, the Greenbaum sale held by Robert A. Siegel in 1972, and Dr. Swan’s collection that was handled by the late Ed Hines to name a few. Over the years we would meet for dinner at shows around the country; St. Louis, APS StampShow, Philadel-phia, and Chicagopex. Ray was one of the most wonderful,
kind and humble persons you could ever hope to meet. I last saw him three years ago. He was battling a medical condition, confined to a nursing home, but still had that solid hand shake and that ever present twinkle in his eye. His love of Masonics came from his involvement with the Masons and having achieved the 32nd degree. I was honore when Ray asked me to sell his collection after he had passed.

The Collectors Club of Chicago announces the publication of the 32nd handbook in their series of specialized philatelic literature:
U.S. Contract Mail Routes by Railroad (1832 – 1875) By Hugh V. Feldman, RPSL., 2017, 1,096 pages in full color, hard bound, with dust jacket and DVD. $107.50 postpaid in the U.S.
This precedent-setting book presents the development of America’s early rail-roads in a historical context focusing on the establishment, routes and the
cities and towns served as it relates to the philatelic information. The mail contract route information is presented in a well-organized manner including dates, route numbers, contract agreement and cost per mile.
The arrangement is by state accompanied by charts, copies of detailed maps locating towns and a detailed list of the stations served on the various mail contracts.
The mail contracts normally have the individual stops and dates and thus one may be able to brack-et in times when a specific station was in use.
The book illustrates 242 covers, 582 maps and 360 other images. A DVD is included containing over 800 covers (many not illustrated in the book), PMG annual reports and other reports to Congress between 1817 and 1878. In addition, there are images of the manuscript Railroad Contracts by States - 6,773 in all and we believe these con-tracts have never been reproduced before.
