Objective and Warm Up• Objective: IWBAT define key vocabulary from The Wonderful Wizard

of Oz by L. Frank Baum, and demonstrate understanding by writing sentences using each word and drawing or acting out the idea behind each words’ meaning.

• Language Objective: IWBAT identify and recognize the difference between words within the same word family in different contexts for example when to use “wonderful” instead of “wondrous”.

Warm Up (3 minutes)

How is everyone behaving in the pictures? ¿Como están actuando cada quien?

meek: (adjective) pg. 205• Quiet, humble, and obedient.The meek puppy hardly ever barked. The meek student rarely speaks up in class, unless called on.

assorted: (adjective) p. 199• Many different kinds.

How are these boxes of candy “assorted”?

How are these cookies assorted?

manner: (adjective) pg. 203• The way something occurs or is done.

Can you describe the different manners that the women are walking?

What is the manner in which this guy is sitting? (How is this guy sitting?)

queer: (adjective) pg. 201

• Very strange or odd.What makes these imagesqueer?

prosperous: (adjective) pg. 200

• Successful or thriving.Carla’s business was so prosperous, she had to hire an assistant. How are these plants prosperous?

to dazzle: (verb) pg. 199• To be unable to see because of a bright light.The nail polish dazzled under the bright lights. The jewels on this necklace will dazzle the guests at the party tonight. The fireworks are dazzling in the dark night sky.

Student Task: Create Sentences

• In your groups create sentences that effectively express the meaning of each word!

• You must get the sentence checked before ONE person may go and fetch a sentence strip.

• Once your sentence strip has been approved ONE HANGER may put the strip on the wall.

Student Task: Create Visuals

• Once you have a sentence strip on the wall for AT LEAST one word, you may begin planning with your group how best to represent this word visually.

• Plan out a drawing or short skit, that would allow the other groups to Guess the Word you are referring to.

• Draw a picture, or plan a skit (nothing too grand!)

Independent Task: Write your own sentences

• Use the examples in the room and the textbook, to model and plan your own sentences.

• Write them out on loose leaf to be collected by Ms. Crowe.
