Now in its 15th year, this thriving annual event features Open Studios, Tours, Exhibitions, Workshops, Demonstrations and more, all taking place throughout the beautiful and picturesque Ards and North Down Borough.
The region is well known for its many Artists and Makers and during the event visitors have the opportunity to view their work, purchase or commission a unique piece or have a go in a workshop.

On Sunday 7 August, spend an inspiring alfresco afternoon surrounded by creativity, in the beautifully restored Bangor Castle Walled Garden.
Take this unique opportunity to interact with Artists and Makers who will be providing free demonstrations throughout the afternoon as well as exploring the Garden’s horticultural personality and its two unique sculptures inspired by the Borough’s maritime history.
Event is outdoors, weather permitting.

The beautiful location of Bangor Castle Walled Garden is the backdrop for a day of wood art and craft in its many forms, from bowls to sculptures, hand carved to machined. The Irish Wood Turners’ Guild will carry out demonstrations under the beautiful Victorian band stand.
There will be a range of free demonstrations of different techniques including lathe work and hand carving.

BLOCKING IN COMPOSITIONWITH RAY ELWOOD Sat 6 Aug 10am - 4pm
When beginning a painting in oils, tone is more important than colour.
Using only venetian red, yellow ochre, black and white paint on canvas boards, Ray will explain the techniques used in portrait and still life painting with a limited palette.
Canvas boards and paints will be provided. Participants should bring own brushes – flat hogs hair in numbers 6 and 12. Not suitable for beginners.

TIFFANY GLASS WITH IRENE McBRIDE OF DISCOVERY GLASSMon 8 Aug 10am – 4.30pm
Create a stained glass panel in the “Tiffany” style. Have an enjoyable day learning the basics of this craft from cutting glass through to soldering. Suitable for beginners and for those with some knowledge of the craft.

Dip into the beginnings of sculpture.Create a mushroom to your own taste

Create your little woodland mouse to compliment your mushroom. Glaze a
small mushroom created by the artist. Learn several techniques of glazing.

Create your very own pair of beautiful
copper sparrows, made from recycled wire. In this specialised workshop, participants will learn how to prepare recycled wire to

and vinegar.

MOSAIC DESIGN AND TECHNIQUEWITH SALLY HOUSTONTWO DAY WORKSHOPWed 10 Aug 10am – 4pmThurs 11 Aug 10am – 1pm Under the experienced guidance of Sally, participants will learn techniques in mosaic design and execution and will have the opportunity to create various beautiful mosaic pieces to take home, including pot stands, house numbers and unique tiles that can be applied to a variety of surfaces.
The class will equip participants to be adventurous with their own future projects ensuring that they have a good understanding of the practical techniques as well as knowledge of a variety of classic designs.
Finishing and grouting to be done on day two. Suitable for beginners or those who want to try more advanced techniques.

HAPPY PAINTING WITH DEBRA WENLOCKWed 10 Aug10am - 4pm
A happy intuitive playful approach to artmaking. Participants will be encouraged to study their work through a viewfinder towards a new way of seeing.

FACIAL RECONSTRUCTIONWITH SHARON REGAN
Thurs 11 Aug9.30am – 4.30pm
Ever watched Silent Witness or seen a face
reconstructed from just a skull? Now is your chance to try it yourself. On this full day course each participant will work from a
replica skull (1/2 life size). After a brief explanation and with the aid of photographs
and diagrams, participants will begin to reconstruct the face, muscle by muscle,
manipulating the muscles to form expression and then smoothing skin over muscles. Sharon will also explain how the
ageing process affects the skin and muscle.
Air drying clay will be used so thatparticipants can take home their bust at
the end of the day. Once fully dry it can be painted or varnished with acrylic paint.

INTRODUCTION TO CYANOTYPEWITH ALICE BURNS
Thurs 11 Aug1pm – 4pm
An introduction to the historical
photographic process of cyanotype. Participants will create their own unique
photograms using a heliographic sunlight printing process which produces a stunning
blue print on fabrics and paper.
Participants should bring thin leaves, grasses and flowers that are dry.
Thin objects e.g. lace, paper cut outs or any other thin materials to print from.

A taster session with Donaghadee based Ceramicist Sharon Regan. Working with
air drying clay, participants will create little seals and boats, learning how to craft

Debbie will take participants through the history of the Dorset Button and how it can
be used today for embellishment or as a piece of quirky jewellery. Participants will be
taught how to create their own brooch or necklace to take home.

Participants will gain an insight into the technique of monoprinting without a press, which means this technique can be achieved at home. Using drawing and paper cut outs, participants will create unique monoprints.

Children are introduced to a variety of illustrations and characters from popular Children’s books and then have fun coming up with their own story book character using collage materials provided. The workshop will conclude with an opportunity to present work to the rest of the group/adult supervisors.

Rachel will introduce the session with an Artist Talk and Q+A. Participants will look at shape, space and the surreal and experiment and explore the depths of mixed media collage using the materials and images provided to create their very own collage to take home.

SKETCH AND STITCH BANGORSat 13 Aug10am – 5pm An introduction to Sketching and Thread Sketching. The traditional technique of machine darning is twisted into a contemporary technique to embellish cloth. Participants will be taken on a guided sketch-walk during the morning to document buildings, landmarks and people.
The afternoon session will introduce the machine embroidery technique, transferring images created in the morning on to cloth, using freehand sewing.

Covering the length and breadth of the Ards Peninsula and North Down, Artists’ studios are the place to visit to sneak a peek ‘behind the scenes’ of the Artist at work.
Don’t miss the chance to meet a host of creative people including ceramicists, glass artists, painters and spinners, wood turners and jewellery designers; see them at work or watch the many free demonstrations on offer.
Each studio is numbered so that it can be easily found on the map at the back of the brochure.

If visitors have particular access needs, it is best to contact the studio directly in advance. Remember also that many studios may not accept debit or credit cards so it is best to take some cash along as an alternative method of payment for purchases.
