Another month has passed. Gee how time flies. It feels like yesterday when we were in Namibia and here we go

again. Cant wait for those big dunes!

Good news is that Theo Potgieter has joined us on the committee as convenor of the Conservation portfolio.

Welcome Theo we look forward to engaging with you and having your inputs into making this a great club.

With the latter in mind I wonder what makes us a great club. We must be doing something right. We are

apparently one of the most successful clubs in SA. We have the best growth and most consistent numbers. A lot

of clubs are battling out there. But a club is only as good as its members. So it must be all of you who contribute

to make the various outings, functions and projects such a success and at the end of the day our club a great

    organization.

As a committee we are trying our best, but please feel free to contact us and offer your advice, suggestions and

help to make us go from strength to strength.

We have some bad news and some good news. You will remember at the AGM we mentioned that Toyota SA

requested us to run a similar event for Land Cruiser this year as what we did last year for Hilux. This to celebrate

the 60th anniversary of Land Cruiser. Also to run this once again in conjunction with our Atlantis fun event.

Unfortunately the use of Atlantis was not approved for the big Cruiser celebration so this event will not take

place. However our Atlantis fun event was approved and will run on Saturday 15 October 2011. Please come

along and help, watch the emails and other correspondence with regard to this event. Toyota will still be ourmain sponsor.

Well thats it for this month.

    See you in the tracks...............

You'd be correct in expecting a steep rocky ascent and descent at Tierkloof, but the surprise sting in the tail is a soft

sand challenge. Although the trail covers only 12km, there is plenty to keep off-road adventurers amused, starting

with a rocky climb that will be a sweaty-palmed, white-knuckled experience for rookies and a challenge for

seasoned campaigners. The fun begins almost immediately after you turn off the main road, with a 5km mountain

ascent littered with huge boulders and a gap between looming rocks where marshalling is recommended. Your

reward on reaching the Bloukop viewsite is a magnificent panorama over Brandvlei Dam towards Worcester.

Klipspringers, baboons and black eagles were spotted, with leopard tracks providing evidence of nocturnal hunts .

Taking another route down the mountain will confront you with a deep dive into a normally dry riverbed, some

sandy sections and finally Tierkloof's sting in the tail, a daunting but safe climb in deep, soft sand that is impossible

normal road pressures. This trail is not a vehicle breaker and will pose no damage to your vehicle

After the trail (3hrs) we will stop for a braai at the farm. Please bring meat salads cooldrinks etc..

We are also welcome to get the key at the office to go fishing or swimming on the brandvlei dam.

    When and Where to

    Meet

Meet 8:00 for 8:30 sharp, at the Engen 1Stop before N1 Joostenbergvlakte and have a cup

of Wimpy coffee or some breakfast if you wish. We will then follow in convoy over Dutoits

Kloof and arrive at the trail by 9.30 am

Camping at Skilpadfontein(and Breedekloof Outdoor and Wine Festival)

7 9 October Fully BookedWe have been to the Breedekloof Outdoor and Wine festival in previous years and it seems many club

members enjoy their wine tasing and the events on offer. The 2011 festival is 7-9 October, and we have

arranged camping for maximum 12 vehicles at Skilpadfontein (S 33.602983 E 19.259776), where we would havethe entire campsite to ourselves. This is a social weekend outing, with no 4x4 trail planned.

    The Campsite

As we have booked the entire campsite, the price may fluctuate depending on the number of vehicles

attending. A maximum of two vehicles and 6 people are allowed on each campsite. All sites have shade, a

power point and a braai. There is also a communal braai area. No wood or braai grids are provided, so make

sure to bring your own. Two ablution areas have toilets and hot showers. There is also a kitchen area for

washing up, incl a work surface. The campsite is on the Breede River for swimming, and fishing. Bring your own

canoe or mountain bike. The campsite can be accessed by normal sedan vehicles. The campsite is close to the

entrance to Goudini Spa for those wanting a dip in hot water.

Breedekloof FestivalThe festival starts on Friday for some wine farms, and is in full force on Saturday, slowing down on Sunday.

Previous festivals have included: wine tasting (free with extended hours), cheese and olive tasting, raisin

spitting competitions, food stalls, live entertainment, forklift competitions, art exhibitions, various childrens

activities such as petting farms and jumping castles, 5km/10km Night Run on the Friday and a mountain bike

event on Saturday morning for the energetic, a small 4x4 obstacle course, GPS treasure hunt, guided

birdwatching. If theres sport scheduled, venues usually have a big screen up. The 2011 programme has not yetbeen finalised, but there will be something for everyone. The programme will be forwarded to those interested

    when available.

CostsThe entire campsite (6 sites) costs R1200 per night. Prices will fluctuate based on the number of vehicles who

reply (max 12). If we have the minimum of 6 vehicles booked, the cost is R200 per night per vehicle (R400 for

weekend). If the maximum of 12 vehicles book, the cost reduces to R100 per night per vehicle. Both nights will

need to be booked to secure your campsite.

We need to know if there is enough interest in this outing before booking, so please email Candi on

[email protected] you are interested. We need at least 6 vehicles to make the outing cost effective.

For any queries please contact Candi 0832898111.

2011 Toyota Botswana Kalahari DesertRace An Account by Fred Bartens

Recently the 4WDC in Gauteng extended an invitation to all fellow members to be part of this Years TDR as

this prestigious Race is known to insiders. It is the event of the annual Absa Off Road Championship. This yearwas the 30th year running of this flagship event of the 4WDC in Gauteng. It attracts works teams and privateers,

lots of spectators from across the border in SA, as well as literally 10s of thousands of local fans who line the

routes during the 4 days of action (June 23 -26).

Three of us, in 2 vehicles, Johann Marais and Dave Melly with Fred as passenger took the short notice gap and

left for Gaborone. 1 days later we arrived, introduced ourselves and got our bearings. Toyota SA treated the

three of us magnificently (Thank you Toyota!) and the colleagues of the Gauteng 4WDC, their ORRU and their

Marshal Unit welcomed us with open arms. We were promptly enrolled to assist at various waypoints along the

route, as marshals, for crowd control at dangerous road intersections and just had an opportunity to be part of it

all. Our radio and navigational (GPS) knowledge and equipment stood us in good stead.

The race was held over 4 days. Approximately 30 motorcycles and quads and 50 vehicles enrolled. These arespread over 6 classes and include racing bakkies from the various manufacturers and privateers as well as

purpose built pipe car racers, many with huge V8s and capable of 200km/h plus .

The race was run from a DSP (Race headquarters) with a Start/Finish line and where all the teams had their

trailers, trucks and mobile workshop facilities for the racing crews, organisers, pit crews, mechanics and PR stalls.

Huge tents for catering and functions were erected. The 1st loop of the motorcycle race was held on the

Thursday, we missed that, but we were on our posts on the Friday for the second loop the bike riders had to

complete (both totalling about 700 km)as well as the Prologue on the Friday afternoon which determines the

starting order of the more than 50 vehicles.

On the Saturday the cars had to complete 2 loops of the blue route, on Sunday 2 loops of the green route,

totalling 1000 km. Large doses of dust, fumes, noises like the roars of revving engines and the screams of

thousands of spectators and more dust make these events special. Frantic activity with repairs, refuelling,

tuning, cleaning add to the vibe. On Sunday the event ended with a prize giving with elated victors and

disappointed runners up. They will be there next year to try again.

Hats off to the chaps at the Gauteng Club for organising all the aspects of such a multi-million Rand event, from

thousands of meters of banner tape to toilets, tents, communications, scoring, emergency choppers and many,

    many volunteers.

The 3 of us tackled the long road back across the border on to the Cape on Monday, arriving safe and sound after

midnight. So ended a round trip of 3300km.

Was this a worthwhile trip? YES

It would be magic if we could make this a week long official Club tour next year, allowing for visits along the way

and into that corner of Botswana. Interested? Drop me a line. Fred.

    Points Event #210 July

Words by Tim the Points Man

    Photos by John Inglis

We all met at the Makro in Ottery on a wind-free Sunday morning to start our day in the Phillpi dunes. On arrival

at the dunes we found Ian and Dino all fired up for the days proceedings. I think Ian was there at 6am already

    LOL.

The first obstacle had people getting full points except for John who was trying to ride at 2bar in the sand. This

was soon to be changed as I am not in the market to hand out points without actually working for them, by the

time the third obstacle was on the cards, the points where getting harder to earn, especially if Dino sets up

    obstacle 3!!

We had all sorts of obstacles ranging from progressive starts to some really technical stuff, which saw Ian going

out of his tracks and trying to re-cross them, with the competitors reading the rules! What fun.

John and Jeff had some (pap) tyre problems and Leonards Isuzu ran out of steam on the hill. Amazingly the

    Jimny pulled through great.

The lunch consisted of boerewors rolls which went down well in the sun.

The next points event will be held in October. I am trying to organize a weekend camp and a Saturday trail

combined with a points event Sunday all-in-one. Whereby day visitors can join and return home, maybe

somewhere within 100kms , any suggestions will be appreciated.

Thanks to all who helped setup on the Saturday afternoon and Fellicity for arranging the boerie rolls.

Sudoku Instruction: You dont have to be good at maths to complete Sudoku! All

you have to do is make sure that each line across and each line down contains the

numbers one to nine, with no repetition of numbers within a line.

Youll also see that the numbers one to nine will also feature only once in each nine-block square. The numbers that are already filled in will help you determine where
