The Group:   We together tried to combine our pitch ideas but

mainly revolving around Becky’s, a thriller (whereas Hannah’s sci-fi

was going to be too difficult to create and we had little knowledge of

the genre itself). We feel we share the roles equally: filming, editing

and researching.

The Brief: To create the opening two minutes of a new feature film,

including titles and an original soundtrack.

Its Prom Night (2008) meetsWhen a Stranger Calls (2006).

Synopsis: The film is set in theearly 1990’s. A babysitter says

goodnight to a child but shortly

after begins to hear noises

upstairs. She goes to investigate …

a fatal error (if only she’d watched

some horror movies…)! The killer’s

identity remains a narrativeenigma. The two minutes end with a shot of the child; as with

Halloween and many others we will jump to a decade later to feature

the grown up child as our central protagonist.

Target Audience: The film would be open to older audiences also

but mainly concentrating on teenagers, who can easily relate to the

central characters – although older viewers will also be able to relate

to working as a babysitter!

Genre: The genre we have chosen is thriller.

You find with all genres there are key genre

codes and conventions, in all thrillers the

audience is moved by suspense and tension.

Thrillers tend to revolve around the ideas of

kidnappings, ransoms and revenge. Key

conventions present in psychological thrillers

are stalking, mind games, obsession, confinement and in most cases

the fear of a brutal murder.

The Hitchcock’s movies are a prime example of this genre. A famous

example is Psycho, (1960) as one of the Hitchcock’s most profound

films, we intend on following some of his ideas and shot types to

portray our film. A key characteristic of a thriller isthe presence of a scream queen and/or a final girl.

These characters are normally portrayed through the

way the females are exposed. A stereotypical scream

queen is blonde, premarital but sexually active,

consumes alcohol and drugs or has committed a

crime. Their killing is seen as punishment for their

sins.

The final girl forms a binary opposition, typically

virginal, brunette, ‘geeky’ and academic, and seen

as unglamorous (often lacking a boyfriend) … but

will be the last character standing at the end of a

film having proved her bravery. Her

moral ‘purity’ is seen as the source of

her strength.

A prime example is Sigourney

Weaver as Ripley in Alien. The other characters

shown in the film do not survive and Ripley throughout

the film shows her resourcefulness and leadership skills.

In contrast to a scream queen, her body is not the focus

of shots for the male gaze. For our film we decided to

play with audience expectations and employcountertypes: our babysitter portrays the characteristics of a final

girl, which adds shock value and emphasizes the cruelty of the

murderer.

We felt that the films Prom Night

and When a Stranger Calls associate

most to our film, as they both centre

on a teenage girl and her trauma asthey’re stalked by a murderer who

kills those around her to get finally

to her (as also seen in Wes Craven’s Scream). However, in Prom

Night the murderer wants to be with the final girl whereas When a

Stranger Calls the murderer wants her dead for unknown reasons.

Locations: For our media opening we set in family home where the

babysitter is looking after a young child for the night. We wanted the house to lookquite secluded, to make it look more vulnerable and isolated. This technique is usedin most films, for instance in Halloween the opening shots of the detached housemake it look isolated, making the audience fear for the characters more. This isemphasized quite a lot in the modern version of When A Stranger Calls, where wesee a very big house in the middle of nowhere, a long way from help.

In the end we chose was Becky’s house.Although it isn't in reality that secluded, we

knew we could get quite a few shots whereno other houses were visible to make itlook secluded. This house was also themost appropriate as it's reasonably close to

school so we could easily film in lunchtimes and after school if necessary. Also itbeing one of the group member’s houseswe had easy access to it and we wereeasily able to adapt my room to fit thecontext of our film.

We use a shot similar to this is our film of the house, so you can see the light being switched on and off in the girls room.

This is a shot of the lounge in whichEmily, the babysitter is watching TV

House used in When A Stranger

when she starts hearing noises above her from the little girls room. We seeher leave the room to go investigate.

This is a shot of the hallway and stairs that you see in the film. Emily, thebabysitter walks from the doors at the bottom to the bottom of the stairs,

shouting Rachel...waits for a response, receives none and continues up thestairs.

Landing shot, large amount of

the opening takes place here, aswe see a false scare and theapproach to the little girl’sroom.

This is the little girl, Rachel’sroom. However none of theadaptations

Cast: In our opening we have 4 main characters & 5 actors:

The child being babysat for, Rachel, around the age of 10.

The older version of Rachel, around the age of 17.

The babysitter, around the age of 16.

The older version of Rachels' boyfriend, Chase, age 16.

The fifth actor is an extra who walks past Rachel and Chase in acorridor, around the same age as them.

For our actors we finally chose...

For the young version of Rachel -- RachelConlon. Who is 11 years old. Using ayoung child in a horror opening can bequite a difficulty as many parents wouldn'twant their child involved in such. Howeverafter a discussion with the parent theyoung girl wouldn't be around when wefilmed or photographed any of the 'horror'

and as she only is on screen for around 10 seconds she has littleissue in being involved in any gore. We were very lucky in finding achild of the age we were looking for who was able to act to thestandards we wanted.

For the older version of Rachel -- MaryNewton. Who is age 16, but playing therole of 17. We wanted someone who lookedas similar to the younger version of Rachel as

possible, therefore we need someone withblonde curly hair. We also wanted her to bepretty and have a good figure. If the rest of the film was to be created the film wouldrevolve around this girl's life, we wanted herto be blonde, to create the effect similar to

Prom Night.Where thefinal girl is apretty blondewho youexpect to bea scream

queen but her luck saves her through the film. Stereotypically wewanted to place her in the more 'popular' group of teens. Where theyattend parties and drink alcohol etc. So that she would be surroundedby mis-behaving teens which would what the film would obtain.

The babysitter -- Emily Moore. Aged 16. We wanted tochallenge the code and conventions when it came to our babysitter,

we wanted to portray her in the opening two minutes as a final girl, sothat when the audience realise she's dead its more of a shock to theaudience because they expect the film to be about her. As theopening is only 2 minutes and we want to include a storyline to thebeginning we didn't have much time for any dialogue of sorts toportray her as a final girl so we based this idea on costume, hair andmake up.

We wanted a brunette which is stereotypically more likely to

survive in horrors, and we also wanted to her to be quiteplain and simple so little makeup was used and her outfit isquite bland with blue and denim. Wealso covered a large amount of herbody so that she doesn't appear asrevealing anything. As this is meant to bewhen Rachel is younger we based thebabysitter around the late 1990's/ early2000's. So the clothes she's seen inplace her in a later time period so thetransition of older Rachel and hercostume is more noticeable. We basedher more on the main actress fromWhen A Stranger Calls (2006).

The boyfriend, Chase -- Tom Bearpark .Age 16 acting age 17. We wanted quite a 'hench'

good looking boy for this role. To create the goodlooking people together idea that you comeacross in most horror films like Prom Night.

The main cou le from Prom

The extra-- Holly Rowe. We needed someone to walk past thecouple on the corridor to make it look more like a school, you onlysee the back of their head.

Props: In our film we used a range of props such as...

Toys

Children’s books - Hansel & Gretel - a known scary children's tale.

General childish things to make the room look similar to a 10 year olds.

Fake Blood - this was something necessary for the photos of the deadbabysitter... we did two attempts of this using recipes found on the internetone resource we used was.... http://www.halloween-website.com/fake_blood.htm  from this we created our own fake blood andused it to show the babysitter as dead. We made several mixes and thenchose the most realistic. We found our final version was realistic however if looked closely at it looked quite blotchy, and lumpy however we weregoing for the colour as these photos will only be shown as quick flashes sothe audience wont get much of a close look at them.

Mise-en-scene - Costumes: As the film begins in the early

1990’s, the babysitter is seen wearing a common denim outfit, which

reveals very little once again portraying the idea of her innocence. Thelittle girl is wearing pink pyjamas to give the stereotype idea of a cute

young girl. Little makeup is necessary in the filming but when the photos

of the aftermath are present we will need the use of fake blood and other

such things to create the babysitter to look dead and been harmed.
