Over six emergency flares were fired into the sky just be-fore 8 P.M. on Sunday in the area of Farragut River, but the United States Coast Guard de-termined that individuals at one of the cabins were just disposing of expired flares.
Dennis Rogers and his family were anchored in Francis An-chorage of Farragut Bay when they saw a red parachute flare slowly descending from the Far-ragut River area, Rogers said in a written statement to the Pilot. Rogers immediately called the Coast Guard Sector Juneau to report the sighting. While he
was on the phone with Coast Guard officials, he saw at least six more flares fired from the same area.
The M/V Columbia was in Frederick Sound at the time and diverted their route towards Francis Anchorage where they deployed their safe boat and crew and began heading to-wards the area of the flares. A USCG helicopter soon arrived on scene and learned that indi-viduals at one of the cabins on Farragut River had disposed of their expired flares by firing them into the sky.
“All these people thought there was a distress going on be-cause of all the flares that got shot off,” said Amanda Nor-
cross, a spokesperson with the United States Coast Guard.
While it is illegal to willingly
communicate a distress signal to the USCG when help is not needed, the individuals who lit the emergency flares were not fined, said Norcross. She recom-mends contacting the local fire department to see if they will dispose of expired flares. If indi-
viduals are going to dispose of flares by shooting them off, Norcross said they should con-tact the local Coast Guard sector to let them know.

September 19, 1919 Olaf Ar-ness, of the Arness Lumber Company, returned from the south on the last trip of the City of Seattle and reports that arrangements have been made for the mill to start within the next few weeks. “You can tell the people of Petersburg that starting next spring the mill will run at full capacity and employ about 100 men.” This fall the mill will not run full capacity and will employ about 46 men in the mill and logging woods.
September 22, 1944 Recent arrivals in Petersburg were Mrs. Gordon Parr, Ronald and Patri-cia, and Mrs. Parr’s sister, Jayne Gedelman. The Parrs are not new to Alaska, having worked in a bakery in Fairbanks. Mr. Parr, who has been baking for 13 years in Alaska will come to Petersburg as soon as all the supplies and equipment he needs are assembled. The bak-ery will be located in the Stenslid building on Main Street.
September 17, 1969 Carl Thynes is the new principal at Petersburg High School. He has been on sabbatical leave for one year while obtaining his mas-ter’s degree at Grand Forks, N.D. “It was a good experi-ence,” he commented. The economy is based on sugar beets instead of fishing and logging. Thynes spoke of the friendliness
of the people. The university was excellent as were the teach-ers.
September 22, 1994 Kris Norosz has become the fourth Petersburg resident and first woman to receive a presidential appointment to the International Pacific Halibut Commission. She believes that halibut by-catch will be a major issue fac-
ing the commission in 1995. She said the commission can be fractious when dealing with fisheries not targeted at halibut. The goal has been for each country to account for and re-duce its by-catch. The U.S. has the better observation program right now and she would like to see Canada keep better track of its by catch.
