ELIJAH
On July 20th the Carmelites observe the feast of Elijah the Prophet as a Solemnity (the highest level of feast days) as they reverence him as their Spiritual Father. Therefore, our prayers and readings this Sunday are from those selected for this Solem-nity. The first reading (taken from 1 Kings 19) is a section of what is called the Elijah Cycle – a series of stories about Elijah (1 Kings 17 – 2 Kings 2:11).
The prophet Elijah (also known as Elias) was born in a remote and little known village called Tishbe, which lies among the mountains of Gilead, on the other side of the Jordan River. His birth place Tishbe, is inter-preted to mean a converter and the name Elijah as “My God of power”. We know nothing about his childhood and his life. In the Book of Kings, we find Elias entering the stage of history, abruptly out of nowhere, with a word of faith and power presenting himself to the king saying “And Elijah the Tishbite said unto Ahab, ‘As the Lord God of Israel lives, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew or rain these years, but according to my word’.”
The prophetic mission of the prophet lasted fifteen years and made a profound impression on the imagination of the people of Israel. Later generations remembered Elijah and expected him to return as the forerunner of the coming day of the Lord (Mal. 4:5).
In the New Testament, people during the times of Jesus thought He was Elijah himself (Matt. 16:14, Luke 8). Others thought John the Baptist was Elijah (John 1:21). At the transfigu-ration of Jesus, Elijah appeared together with Moses (Matt. 17:3-4 today’s Gospel passage).

El 20 de julio los Carmelitas guardan la fiesta de Elías el Profeta como una solemnidad (el más alto nivel de los días festivos), por lo que lo reverencian como su padre espiritual. En el Libro de los Reyes, encontramos que Elias entra al escenario de la historia, de repente de la nada, con una palabra de fe y poder presentán-dose al rey diciendo: “Entonces Elías el tisbita,
dijo a Acab:«Como vive el Señor Dios de Israel, en cuya presencia estoy, que no habrá rocío ni lluvia en estos años, sino por mi palabra».”
La misión profética del profeta duró quince años, y causó una profunda impresión en la imaginación de la gente de Israel. Las generaciones posteriores se acordaron de Elías y esperaban que regresara como el precursor del futuro día del Señor (Mal. 4:5).
En el Nuevo Testamento, la gente durante los tiempos de Jesús, pensaron que Él mismo era Elías (Mateo 16:14, Lucas 8). Otros pensaban que Juan el Bautista era Elías (Juan 1:21). En la trans-figuración de Jesús, Elías apareció junto a Moisés (Mateo 17:3-4 pasaje evangélico de hoy).

Adult Confirmation Classes this Fall
Once again this year, we will celebrate Confirmation in our parish at the end of November. In preparation for this, we will be offering a preparation series in English for adult Catholics (18 years or older) who were baptized and have received First Communion but have not been confirmed. If you haven’t been confirmed and would like to celebrate this sacrament, details are available from Fr. Edgar ([email protected] or 795-1633 ext 111).

Knights of Columbus Summer Social
Cool down this summer with a frosty cold root beer float!
Join the Knights of Columbus next Sunday, 27 July, for their Summer Social. Hot dogs, hamburgers, sodas and chips will be served in Dougherty Hall after the 8:00 AM and 10:00 AM Masses. The Knights will host the Summer Social again on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of August (10 & 24 August). Proceeds will support the many charities of the Knights.

Masses with our Polish and African communities will be celebrated in August at 3:00 PM on their usual Sundays – Polish Community on the 1st Sunday and African Community on the 3rd Sunday.

Parish Musician to Retire
At the beginning of August, Charmaine Piane-Dame (our Director of Liturgy and Music) will be retiring. Charmaine has been a part of our staff for the past two years. Each week she has been working behind the scenes in prepar-ing our Sunday liturgies – scheduling ministers, putting together the Presiders’ and Lectors’ books, and communi-cating with the Lectors about particular selections for the Sunday Liturgy of the Word. On the weekends, she has been the accompanist at the Saturday 5:00 PM Mass and the Sunday Masses at 1:00 PM (in Spanish), 3:00 PM (in Polish once a month) and 7:00 PM. (She has not been with us on Sunday mornings, as she has also been coor-dinating the music ministry and directing the choir at a Presbyterian Church on the northwest side of the city.)
We are very grateful for her service to our community, and wish her well as she makes this transition in her life. Her last weekend with us will be 2–3 August.

Pianista de la Parroquia se Retira
A principios de agosto, se jubilará Charmaine Piane-Dame (nuestra Directora de Liturgia y Música). Charmaine ha formado parte de nuestro personal en los últimos dos años. Cada semana, ella ha estado trabajando detrás de bambalinas en la preparación de nues-tras liturgias dominicales – progrqamando a los ministros, juntando los libros de los celebrantes y comunicándose con los Lectores sobre determinadas selecciones para la Liturgia de la Palabra de los domingos. Los fines de semana, ha sido la acompañante en la Misa del Sábado a las 5:00 PM y las misas del domingo a la 1:00 PM (en español), las 3:00 PM (en polaco una vez al mes) y de las 7:00 PM. (Ella no ha estado con nosotros el domingo por la mañana, ya que también ha estado coordinando el ministerio de la música y dirigiendo el coro de una iglesia presbiteriana en el lado noroeste de la ciudad.)
Estamos muy agradecidos por su servicio a nuestra comunidad, y le deseamos lo mejor mientras lleva a cabo esta transición de su vida. Su último fin de semana con nosotros será el 2 y 3 de agosto.

Bats in the Belfries – Bees in the Building
yet another maintenance cost
This past week we discovered that we have a hive of bees in our church. Mike, one of our maintenance men, while checking the outsides of our buildings, no-ticed a lot of bees flying around the side of the blue stained glass window. Upon inspection by the pest control company we use, it was determined that we indeed do have a hive in the wall cavity next to the window, and probably, a very large hive. So, we have arranged to have it removed. This means opening up the roof above it and then repairing this part of the roof.
The removal of the hive costs us $750. The roof repair is still to be determined as we also have some other small ar-eas on the church’s roof that need attention. We will be hir-ing a roofer to do these repairs.
Murciélagos en los Campanarios – Abejas en el Edificio Otro gasto de mantenimiento
La semana pasada hemos descubierto una colmena de abejas en nues-tra Iglesia. Mike, uno de nuestros encargados de mantenimiento, mientras revisaba el exterior de los edificios, se dio cuenta de que un gran número de abejas volaba alrededor del ventanal azul. Tras una inspección realizada por la empresa de control de pla-gas, se determinó que las abejas tienen una colmena en una cavidad junto al ventanal. Por lo que hemos decidido retirarla. Esto significa tener que abrir la
parte del techo que se encuentra encima de la colmena y a la vez, repararlo.
La eliminación de la colmena tiene un costo de $750. La reparación del techo está aún por determinarse, debido a que tenemos algunas pe-queñas áreas que necesitan de atención. Vamos a contratar a un techero para hacer estas reparaciones.

Tucson Samaritans Offer Humanitarian Aide
Each year, 180 human remains of those who die from dehydration are found in our desert. Tucson Samaritans work to prevent suffering and death in the desert. You are invited to join in this humanitarian effort in one or both of the following ways:
Donate gallon bottles of water (bringing them to our church during the month of July).
Join these Samaritans on a desert trip, carrying water, food, and medicine while looking for people in distress. A training class is offered on the first Sunday of each month from 1:30 to 5:00 PM at Southside Presbyterian Church (317 W. 23rd St.). Please RSVP at 549-8903 (24-hour cancellation notice, please). Panhandlers at the Parish From time to time, especially when our community gathers for Sunday Mass, various persons come around looking for money. They usually have a con-vincing story of need. However, very often they are not true. In fact what they are doing is preying upon our Christian charity. If you are approached by some-one please let them know that we have a social out-reach ministry with our St. Vincent de Paul Society and/or that you donate to specific causes to help the poor and needy. You could also indicate that there are signs on our property that indicate that soliciting funds is not permitted.

The Mission
Casa Maria’s mission, as part of the lay Catholic Worker movement founded in
1930 in New York City by Dorothy Day and Peter Maurin, is to practice daily the love and compassion of Jesus and to implement the teachings of his Gospel and
the social doctrine of our church. The Sermon on the Mount and the call to soli-darity with the poor are the heart of these teachings.
At Casa Maria, our Catholic Workers are devoted to acts of mercy (feeding and
clothing those in need, visiting the ill, etc.), voluntary poverty, pacifism, and the
search of justice for the poor. In each action, they use their faith and try to revive the faith in those who have lost it, making them understand that Christ has never
left their lives.

Thank you, St. Cyril of Alexandria parishioners for your contribution of lunch (sandwiches, chips, a banana and cookies) every month.
Unfortunately, poverty and hunger rear their ugly heads daily here in Tucson.
Every day at the Free Kitchen, we serve over 500 bag lunches and 150 family food bags in addition to coffee and huge pots of soup. This is done entirely with
private donations like yours. Thank you for sharing your care of the poor.
St. Cyril Parishioners Bag Lunches
For over 20 years our parish
has been making lunches once a month for Casa Maria. On
the 3rd Sunday of every month, a diverse group of vol-
unteers (young and old, indi-viduals and family teams)
come together under the direc-
tion of Julie & Joe Nielson and Roseanne & John Lehman to
put together 250 bag lunches.
Funding for this outreach ministry comes from donations
designated for the Share-A-Lunch option on the Second
Sunday Sharing envelopes and
the annual special collection. Next weekend we will take up our annual special Sunday collection for this ministry to help keep up with the costs associated with it. There is an envelope in for this collection in the mailed packets. If you wish your
donation to be recorded for tax purposes, but don’t receive preprinted envelopes, be sure to either use a check or put your donation in a plain envelope with your name and address clearly printed on it.
As a part of our mission, we seek new and creative ways to organize and let the talent of each one of our volunteer catholic
workers be destined to achieve spiritual and economical transformation of our community.

Los Parroquianos de San Cirilo Comparten un Almuerzo
Por más de 20 años, nuestra parroquia ha venido haciendo almuerzos una vez al
mes, para ayudar a Casa María. El tercer domingo de cada mes, un variado gru-po de voluntarios (jóvenes, viejos, una sola persona y grupos de familias) se
reúnen bajo la dirección de Julie y Joe Nelson y Roseanne y John Lehman para preparar 250 bolsas de almuerzos.
El pasado ciclo escolar, este se amplió a dos veces al mes. Los miembros de la
Comunidad de Educación Religiosa, se han unido al esfuerzo de “alimentar al hambriento”. Bajo la dirección de algunos padres de familia de la Educación Re-
ligiosa, los voluntarios se reúnen en uno de los otros domingos a preparar 250 bolsas de almuerzos.
La financiación para este ministerio adicional proviene de los donativos desig-
nados para la opción de [Comparte-un-Almuerzo] en los sobres de Second Sun-day Sharing [Segundo Domingo de Compartir]. El próximo fin de semana efec-
tuaremos la anual colecta especial para este ministerio para ayudar con los cos-
tos que conlleva. En los paquetes enviados por correo habrá un sobre para esta colecta. Si ustedes desean que su donativo se registre para efectos fiscales, pero no recibe el sobre impreso, asegúrense de
usar un cheque o de poner su donativo en un sobre blanco con su nombre y dirección impreso claramente.
En Casa María, nuestros trabajadores católicos son devotos a actos de misericordia (alimentar y vestir a esos en necesidad,
visitar a los enfermos, etc), pobreza voluntaria, pacifismo y la búsqueda de la justicia para los pobres. En cada acción ellos usan su fe y tratan de revivir la fe en esos que la han perdido, haciéndolos entender que Cristo nunca ha dejado sus vidas.
Como una parte de nuestra misión nosotros buscamos nuevas y creativas formas de organizar y dejar que el talento de
cada uno de nuestros voluntarios trabajadores católicos sea destinado a lograr una transformación espiritual y económica de
nuestra comunidad.
