A Market-Proven Technology

he application of buoyancy principles to level

measurement and control represents one of the

oldest and simplest operating systems in the process

control industry. What varies among manufacturers of

buoyancy units is how the motion of the float is trans-

lated into a control action. In some applications,

mechanical linkages convert the float’s vertical travel

into a contact closure/opening. In approaches requir-

ing isolation of the stored fluid—as in highly-pressur-

ized containments—magnetic coupling technology

allows the liquid to be completely isolated.

The displacer method uses heavier-than-liquid dis-

placers whose vertical travel actuates a switch. The dis-

placers are connected in-line to a spring by means of a

suspension cable and are positioned to rise at a force

proportional to the displaced volume of the liquid.

Magnetic coupling to the switch allows the controlled

liquid to be isolated from the controls.

Buoyancy’s Advantages:

+ Service to 5000 psig (345 Bar); 1000° F (538° C).

+ Displacers can be calibrated without level change.

+ Surface turbulence does not impede performance.

+ For floats, calibration is not required.

+ Floats provide repeatable set points.

+ Simple to understand and use; very reliable.

+ Displacers can provide control for multiple levels.

+ Displacer units permit continuous transmission.

Buoyancy’s Limitations:

- Build-up on floats may impede performance.

- Switch accuracy is limited to +/- 0.25 inch (6mm).

- Will not work with viscous fluids or dry media.

1. Vertical Float

With only a few exceptions, most external cage units

utilize the vertical float operating principle. These con-

trols are most practical in narrow level-differential

applications, such as high and low level alarms.

Principle of Operation. A permanent magnet (1)

is linked to a switch mechanism (2). As the float (3)

rises following the liquid level, it raises the attraction

sleeve (4) into the field of the magnet, which in turn

snaps against the non-magnetic enclosing tube (5),

releasing the switch actuating arm and changing the

switch contact state. The enclosing tube provides a

static seal between the switch mechanism and the float,

eliminating the need for a flexing bellows seal, packing

gland, or other failure-prone sealing elements. When

the liquid level falls, the float pulls the attraction

sleeve down below the magnetic field. The magnet

swings out to reverse contact position causing low level

switch actuation.

Page 5: 46-100 Buoyancy Cover & Back - Powerflo Solutions - … Buoyancy Products.… ·  · 2015-08-15for the measurement and control of level and flow. Buoyancy technology, ... • Displacer

2. Horizontal Float

Magnetrol refers to its horizontal-float instruments as

Side-Mount units. These units utilize a force multiplying

linkage so that a small float can be used on low specific

gravity service. Side-Mount units also offer wide level

differential capability simply by varying the length of the

float stem. The longer the stem, the greater the differen-

tial. Side-Mount units can accommodate tandem func-

tions simply by the addition of another switch and

magnetic sleeve.

Principle of Operation. Side-Mount units employ

permanent magnetic force as the only link between the

float and the switching element. As the pivoted float

follows liquid level changes, it moves an attraction

sleeve (1) into or out of the field of a switch-actuating

magnet (2) causing switch operation. A non-magnetic

enclosing tube (3) effectively isolates the switch mecha-

nism from the controlled liquid.

3. On-Off Displacement

Displacer units offer the user a wide array of control

configurations, from the simple to the complex.

Principle of Operation. A spring is loaded with

weighted displacers which are heavier than the liquid.

Immersion of the displacers in the liquid results in

buoyancy force change, which moves the spring

upward. Since the spring moves only when the liquid

level moves on the displacer, spring movement (A) is

always a small fraction of the liquid level travel (B)

between displacers.

An attraction sleeve (1) is connected to the spring

and operates within a non-magnetic enclosing tube (2).

Spring movement causes the magnetic sleeve to attract

a pivoted magnet (3), actuating a switch mechanism

(4) located outside the non-magnetic enclosing tube.

Built-in limit stops prevent over-stroking of the spring,

under level surge conditions.

Page 6: 46-100 Buoyancy Cover & Back - Powerflo Solutions - … Buoyancy Products.… ·  · 2015-08-15for the measurement and control of level and flow. Buoyancy technology, ... • Displacer

4. Continuous Displacement

The principle of continuous displacement is the

same as off-on displacer controls except that a single,

constant cross-section displacer is employed.

Magnetrol’s Modulevel family of continuous displacer

transmitters and controllers include the digital ES

Modulevel with HART® communications, the analog EZ

Modulevel and the pneumatic Modulevel.

Principle of Operation. Liquid level change acts

upon the spring-supported displacer causing vertical

motion of a core within a linear variable differential

transformer (LVDT). The enclosing tube acts as a static

isolation barrier between the LVDT and the process

media. As the core’s vertical position changes with liq-

uid level, voltages are induced in the secondary wind-

ings of the LVDT. These signals are processed in the

electronic circuitry and used to control the current in

the 4-20 mA output current loop. Digital ES transmit-

ters add HART® communication capability in addition to

the analog 4-20 mA DC output.

Description: Magnetel is a magnetically-coupled indicator that isolates the process in a sealed piping column. A single, high-strength magnet is centered inside the float at the set point. The float rises and falls within the non-magnetic piping column as the level changes. A visual indicator totally isolated from the process liquid is strapped to the column. With rising level, the indicator flags rotate and change colors and provide high visibility level indication. The visual indicator will always signal true level with-out field calibration.

Features: • Available with field-adjustable switches and transmitters• Interface indication• Ideal level indicator for hazardous liquids• Wide range of mounting configurations and styles• Certification options: ASME B31.1 and ASME B31.3 • Safe operation and functional flexibility

Model Selection: Refer to Magnetrol Sales Bulletin 46-129 for model numbers, options and complete specification information.

Process Temp Range: –50° F to +750° F (–46° C to +399° C)

Process Pressure: Vacuum to 600 lb. class or 1440 psig @ 100° F (99 Bar @ 38° C)

Specific Gravity: 0.62 to 2.0 SG

Display: Rotatable up to 360°

Transmitter Option: A resistance chain, with multiple reed switches, is sealed in a 316 SS tube and strapped to the piping column. Rising level causes the magnetic coupling to close each successive reed switch, producing a voltage change proportional to the level height. The transmitter converts this change into a two-wire, loop powered 4-20 mA DC signal.

Optional Transmitter Data: –40° F to +500° F (–40° C to +260° C) temperature range

Alarm Switch Option: As level passes the switch, the magnetic coupling causes the contacts to change state. The SPDT contacts will not reset until the level passes in the opposite direction. The totally isolated, magnetically coupled alarm switch can be field mounted at the desired set point without interrupting the process. The switch is bi-stable in NO or NC position.

Optional Alarm Switch Data: Standard dry contact: –20° F to +390° F (–29° C to +199° C) temperature rangeHi-temp dry contact: –20° F to +750° F (–29° C to +399° C) temperature range Reed switch: –20° F to +248° F (–29° C to +120° C) temperature range
