Overview

Vaeacutetchanan

Although Mosheis glad that Ye-hoshua will lead

the nation Moshe never-theless prays to enter theLand of Israel in order toenjoy the promise landafter the last forty yearsof hard work Hashemrefuses

Moshe reminds Israelof the gathering at Sinai when they received the orahmdashthat they saw no visual representation ofthe Divine but only thesound of words

Moshe impresses onthe people of Israel thatthe Sinai revelation tookplace before an entire na-tion not to a select elite

and that only the Godrsquospeople will ever claimthat Hashem spoke totheir entire nation

Moshe specifically en- joins Israel to ldquopass overrdquothe Sinai event to theirchildren throughout allgenerations

Moshe predicts ac-curately that when thepeople dwell in the landof Israel they will sin andbe scattered among all thepeoples

Tey will stay few innumber but will eventu-ally return to Hashem

Moshe designates threeldquorefuge citiesrdquo to whichan inadvertent killer mayflee

Moshe continued to ask 515times Tis is truly amazing We learn from this the prin-ciple that the way to successis through persistence Espe-cially in spiritual matters oneneeds to adopt this attitude

Tere are three rules forsuccess 1 Initiative mdash youhave to try 2 Perseverancemdash you have to keep trying 3 Te Almighty blesses your ef-forts If something is impor-tant enough to you you must

persist in order to succeed Te case of Moshe is veryspecial Because when weread this text we think thatG-d did not answer posi-tively to him even thoughhe prayed 515 times on thissame topic However we dis-cover that God answered himpositively When we analyzeMoshersquos request we under-stand that he wanted to enterthe Promised Land or ldquopara-diserdquo to rest after forty yearsof hard work But the prom-ised land of Canaan was not

a real ldquoparadiserdquo even thoughit was a land of milk andhoney Te work was not fin-ished yet when they reached Jericho the conquest of theland had just started andthe way to get all the country

was sti ll long it wi ll last allthe life of Joshua Tatrsquos whyG-d had a better answer toMoshersquos prayer G-d wantedto give him the real para-dise Ten when it was timefor Moshe to die G-d give astrange instruction nobodyhad to attend his death andfuneral ldquoTen Moses theservant of the LORD diedthere in the land of Moabat the LORDrsquoS commandHe was buried in a valley in

the land of Moab oppositeBeth-peor but no one knowshis burial place to this dayrdquo(Deut 345-6) Who buriedMoshe Te Brit Hachadashahelps us to understand a veryimportant point about thedeath of Moshe Moshe hadno need to be buried by hu-man beings Moshe died and was resurrected immediatelyto go to paradise Te veryspecial archangel called Mi-kael came to take Moshe toheaven ldquoBut when the arch-angel Mikael contended with

the devil and disputed aboutthe body of Moses he did notdare to bring a condemnationof slander against him butsaid ldquoTe Lord rebuke yourdquo(Jude 9) Ten Moshe finallygot what he was asking for in

Haftara Isaiah 401-20

his Shabbat is thefirst Shabbat after i-sha BrsquoAv It is called

ldquoShabbat Nachmurdquo (ldquoShabbatof comfortrdquo) as the Haftarahof this week begins with the

words ldquoNachmu NachmuAmirdquo - ldquoComfort comfortmy peoplerdquo here are seven

weeks from isha BrsquoAv untilRosh Hashana his period iscalled ldquoShiva DrsquonechemtardquomdashrdquoSeven weeks of comfortrdquo

hese seven Haftarot areprophesies of comfort andhope for Israel and Godrsquospeople at large

Haftara he root of theHebrew word for comfortldquoNachemrdquo nun-chet-memcan refer to comforting thenation as well as to comfort-ing an individual after thedeath of a loved one

If the people of Israel are to

be comforted it is becausethe Lord is coming very soon

he text says A voice ringsout ldquoClear in the desert aroad for the LORD Level inthe wilderness a highway forour God Let every valley beraised every hill and mountmade low Let the ruggedground become level andthe ridges become a plain

he Presence of the LORDshall appear and all flesh asone shall behold mdash For theLORD Himself has spokenrdquo(Is 403-5 JPS)

It is interesting to notice thatthe Brit Hachadasha whichis an interpretation made2000 years ago applied thistext to the coming of theMashiach ldquohis is the oneof whom the prophet Isaiahspoke when he said ldquohe

S HEMA I SRAEL

W e read in this weekrsquos Parashathe famous Sh-

ema Yisrael ldquoHear O Israel theL-rd is our G-d the L-rd isOne And you shall love theL-rd your G-d with all yourheart and with all your soulBechol Nafshecha and with all your might Bechol Mersquoodecha rdquo(Deuteronomy 64-5) Te Sh-ema is recited three times dailymdash in the morning and eveningprayers and again before bed-time With the Shema we af-firm our belief in G-d and

proclaim our love for HimBechol Nafshecha ldquoWith all

your soulrdquo means according tothe Jewish tradition that ourlove for G-d should be great-est than loving our own lifethus we must express our loveto G-d even though we are tor-

tured and killedBechol Mersquoodecha ldquowith

all your mightrdquo Te word Mersquoodecha is according to the Jewish tradition from the He-brew word Midah (measure) Te orah tells us that no mat-ter with what measure G-ddeals with us we must still ex-press our love for Him Tusour sages say that ldquoOne mustbless G-d for the bad just as forthe goodrdquo with all measure

Our sages explain that al-though we may not see the

good in certain situations it isonly because we have limited vision From G-drsquos perspectivethere is a reason for everythingIn the end whatever G-d doesis for the good

Te Shema is the most im-portant Jewish prayer andconfession of faith thatrsquos why Yeshua said it is the first or themost important mitzva

Te Besorah of Mark statesldquoAnd one of the scribes cameand having heard them rea-soning together and perceiv-ing that he had answered them

well asked him Which is thefirst commandment of allAnd Yeshua answered him Te first of all the command-ments is Hear O Israel TeLord our God is one LordAnd thou shalt love the Lordthy God with all thy heart

and with all thy soul and withall thy mind and with all thystrength this is the first com-mandmentrdquo Mark 1228-30

he parasha of this week teaches us per-severance in prayer

Moshe prayed for forgivenessand his entry to the Prom-ised Land According to the Jewish tradition Vaeacutetchanan which is translated as ldquoprayerrdquoor as ldquopleadedrdquo ldquoAnd I plead-ed with the LORD at thattimerdquo (Deuteronomy 323) According to the guematria way to interpret the HebrewBible Vaeacutetchanan has the nu-merical value of 515 Moshe

used a non conventional wordto say that he prayed G-d 515times for this special requestPerseverance and persistenceare the lessons Moshe wantedto teach us

Yeshua teaches us also agreat lesson about persever-ance in prayer through a par-able ldquoTen Yeshua told thema parable about their need topray always and not to loseheart He said ldquoIn a certaincity there was a judge whoneither feared God nor hadrespect for people In thatcity there was a widow whokept coming to him and say-ing lsquoGrant me justice againstmy opponentrsquo For a while herefused but later he said tohimself lsquoTough I have nofear of God and no respectfor anyone yet because this widow keeps bothering me I

will grant her justice so thatshe may not wear me out bycontinually comingrsquordquo And theLord said ldquoListen to what theunjust judge says And will notGod grant justice to his cho-sen ones who cry to him dayand night Will he delay longin helping themrdquo (Luke 181-7) eaching through parableis a very Jewish way of teach-ing people like stories andstories can be rememberedeasily In a certain city was aldquoJudgerdquo the judge is the one

who has power the one whohas authority to make quickdecisions But if we look at thecontext of this parable we seethat just above in the chapter17 Yeshua was speaking aboutthe coming of the Mashiachhe presented the moral situ-ation of the world ldquoJust as it was in the days of Noah so will it be in the days of theSon of Man Tey were eatingand drinking and marryingand being given in marriageuntil the day when Noah en-tered the ark and the floodcame and destroyed them allLikewise just as it was in thedays of Lotmdashthey were eat-ing and drinking buying andselling planting and buildingbut on the day when Lot wentout from Sodom fire and sul-phur rained from heaven anddestroyed them allrdquo (Luke

1726ndash29) he concluded hiscomparison saying ldquoso will itbe on the day when the Sonof Man is revealedrdquo (Luke1730) Te expression ldquoSonof Manrdquo is the very expressionDaniel used in his descriptionof the Messiah in his chapter7 ldquoI saw in the night visionsand behold with the cloudsof heaven there came one likea son of man and he came tothe Ancient of Days and waspresented before him And tohim was given dominion and

glory and a kingdom thatall peoples nations and lan-guages should serve him hisdominion is an everlasting do-minion which shall not passaway and his kingdom onethat shall not be destroyedrdquo(Daniel 713ndash14) Tis Son ofMan is the one who will es-tablish the kingdom of G-d Te moral situation of the world will be disastrous be-fore this revelation

Yeshua compared the endtime world to the time ofNoah or Lot in Sodom Teonly solution for the currentsituation is the coming of theSon of Man but we need tofeel the necessity of his com-ing and if we feel its necessitythen we will pray days andnights for the coming of theMessiah with perseveranceand persistence

ldquoYou shall not add to the word that Icommand you nor take from it that you

may keep the commandments of theLORD your God that I command yourdquo

Tere are three rules forsuccess 1 Initiative mdash youhave to try 2 Perseverancemdash you have to keep trying 3 Te Almighty blesses your ef-forts If something is impor-tant enough to you you must

persist in order to succeed Te case of Moshe is veryspecial Because when weread this text we think thatG-d did not answer posi-tively to him even thoughhe prayed 515 times on thissame topic However we dis-cover that God answered himpositively When we analyzeMoshersquos request we under-stand that he wanted to enterthe Promised Land or ldquopara-diserdquo to rest after forty yearsof hard work But the prom-ised land of Canaan was not

a real ldquoparadiserdquo even thoughit was a land of milk andhoney Te work was not fin-ished yet when they reached Jericho the conquest of theland had just started andthe way to get all the country

was sti ll long it wi ll last allthe life of Joshua Tatrsquos whyG-d had a better answer toMoshersquos prayer G-d wantedto give him the real para-dise Ten when it was timefor Moshe to die G-d give astrange instruction nobodyhad to attend his death andfuneral ldquoTen Moses theservant of the LORD diedthere in the land of Moabat the LORDrsquoS commandHe was buried in a valley in

the land of Moab oppositeBeth-peor but no one knowshis burial place to this dayrdquo(Deut 345-6) Who buriedMoshe Te Brit Hachadashahelps us to understand a veryimportant point about thedeath of Moshe Moshe hadno need to be buried by hu-man beings Moshe died and was resurrected immediatelyto go to paradise Te veryspecial archangel called Mi-kael came to take Moshe toheaven ldquoBut when the arch-angel Mikael contended with

the devil and disputed aboutthe body of Moses he did notdare to bring a condemnationof slander against him butsaid ldquoTe Lord rebuke yourdquo(Jude 9) Ten Moshe finallygot what he was asking for in

he parasha of this week teaches us per-severance in prayer
