“God has given each of you a gift from the great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another.”

1 Peter 4:10.

Forty-five years ago, on February 18, 1964 George and Grace Leaman, Superintendent and Matron, welcomed Landis Homes’ first residents, and a new community was born. This community has grown over the years, rooted in the willingness of many residents, family

members, staff, volunteers, board members, and many others to share their spiritual gifts in serving one another.

This year also marked a number of other anniversaries:

• 5th year – Children’s Learning Center and Summer Adventure Day Camp

• 10th year – Auction at Fellowship Day to benefit the Caring Fund

• 15th year – Caring Fund, to help toward the cost of uncompensated care provided to those who have exhausted their financial resources

• 20th year – Adult Day Services – Eden West center opened

• 40th year – Healthcare

As we look back over the past 45 years, we are very grateful for the many women and men who looked to God as the giver of all good gifts, and then used these gifts to serve others well. We seek to live out our values of Joy, Compassion, Integrity, Stewardship and Community.

Landis Homes continues to grow in our mission of honoring and enriching the lives of aging adults and their families in a community of Christ-like love. Pathways Institute for Lifelong Learning began offering adult classes on campus this year. Another new venture is the planning for an expansion of residential living, including hybrid homes and cottage homes.

As we look ahead to the future, we are grateful for God’s leading in recent planning work by the Board of Directors and Management. This planning seeks to help us fulfill our Vision of being Leaders in SERVING by focusing on four strategic areas:

• Retirement Community – Keeping it Strong and Vital • Affordable Living • Services at Home • Creative Partnerships – in support of the above

Throughout this Annual Report you will find glimpses of many aspects of serving one another in community life. God has gifted each one from the great variety of spiritual gifts. What a privilege it is to use these gifts well in serving one another!

Charles Good, left, is the only surviving member of the original Landis Homes Advisory Committee serving from 1961-1981. Longest working employee Rachel Brubaker, center, served as a nurse from 1965-2002 and since then works part-time in the Life Enrichment department. Martha Charles, seated, is both the longest serving volunteer as well as the resident who has lived on campus the longest. Martha became a resident in May 1967.

Friends of the Towel and Basin

We are deeply grateful to our Friends of the Towel & Basin who contributed to furthering Christ-like care at Landis Homes. A majority of donors helped support residents who can no longer pay for the full cost of services they need through donations to the Caring and Caring Endowment Funds. Other donors gave donations to provide financial aid to clients in Adult Day Services, to buy medical equipment, and to enrich the services to persons with memory loss. We apologize for any misspellings or omissions from the list. Please contact us with your corrections.

July 1, 2008 to June 30, 2009

Two Recognized for Service

Two persons linked to Landis Homes received PANPHA Distinguished Service Awards for 2009. Ken Brubaker was named Trustee of the Year and Nancy Pawling was named Caregiver of the Year. Each is shown with PANPHA Chair Tama Carey who presented the awards.

Ways to Give Gifts of Cash

This can be as simple as writing a check to Landis Homes and mailing it to the Gift Planning Services Landis Homes, 1001 East Oregon Rd. Lititz, PA 17543

Giving Online

Authorize a charge on a credit card by visiting our web site at www.landishomes.org and follow the link to Make a Gift.

Charitable Bequest

A gift by Will to Landis Homes is a tax free distribution of the estate. It can represent a percentage of the estate, same share as each child or other representation. The gift can be designated for a particular fund or it can be unrestricted.

Charitable Gift Annuity

A Landis Homes gift annuity is a simple contractual agreement between a donor and Landis Homes in which assets are given in exchange for payments for for life. It includes valuable tax benefits.

Life Insurance

A policy can be donated outright or the donor can name Landis Homes as the beneficiary of the policy. Either way there is a tax deduction for the giver.

IRA Distributions

Until Decemeber 31, 2009, individuals Aged 70 ½ or older with individual retirement accounts can make an outright gift using IRA funds without tax complications.

Charitable Remainder Trusts

Appreciated assets like real estate or securities can be turned into a cash gift without losing much of the gain to taxes. The gift asset is transferred to the trust and the trust sells the asset. Donors receive a tax deduction and receive income for life based on an agreed-upon rate.

Charitable Lead Trust

This is a unique tool that allows one to use an income producing asset to pay interest to Landis Homes first. It saves taxes and allows the donor to retain the asset principal or pass it on to heirs after a designated period of time.
