Questions of the Week
Question for Children: Jesus tells us that we each called to follow him. What is hard for you to do to follow Jesus?
Question for Youth: In order to follow Jesus, we have to do hard things, to carry our own crosses. What is a cross that you are carrying right now? In what ways can you ask Jesus to help you with your cross? Question for Adults: Jesus gives us the core truth to life and eternal happiness — the cross. Name the cross that you carry. How is it bringing you closer to God?

Dear Friends in Jesus Christ…,
What a difference between Peter in the Gospel last Sunday when he proclaimed that Jesus was the Messiah and Peter in the Gospel today when he takes Jesus aside to try to dissuade him from facing his Passion in Jerusalem. What a difference between Jesus’ response to Peter in the Gospel last Sunday when he declared Peter to be the Rock on which he would build his Church and Jesus’ response to Peter in the Gospel today when he called Peter “Satan” and an obstacle to his mission.
Comparing the conversation between Jesus and Peter in today’s Gospel with the conversation between Jesus and the devil during his temptations in the desert is disturbing. Peter took Jesus aside just as the devil took Jesus to the pinnacle of the temple and to a high mountain to tempt him. Jesus dismisses Peter with the same word as he dismisses the devil at the end of his temptations in the desert. Jesus uses the word skandalon to describe Peter. That word means a trap or small stone one trips over. So Peter the Rock is now a stone one trips over when going on one’s journey. Just before today’s Gospel, Jesus declared Peter to be the Rock, and now he declares Peter to be an obstacle. He is a hindrance to Jesus on the road to his Passion in Jerusalem. Jesus must face his Passion and endure it for our salvation.
What has changed? When Peter proclaimed Jesus to be the Messiah, he was acting under divine inspiration; Jesus told him it was his heavenly Father who had revealed it to him. When Peter takes Jesus aside to try to discourage him from his Passion, he was not under divine inspiration but acting out of his impulse and his thinking, believing he knew better than Jesus. That may sometimes be our failing also; sometimes, we too think we know better than God. We cannot understand why we have a cross. Or we could think of those who profess faith in Jesus, but like Peter does not want Jesus to interrupt their lifestyles. They want Jesus on their terms. I am thinking of those who would say you are an extremist if you declare that certain lifestyles are immoral or would put one in mortal sin. Peter wanted Jesus but did not want the cross. We also do not want a cross. We want Jesus, but without the challenge of living a moral life. Jesus’ response would surely be, “Get behind me, Satan! You are an obstacle to me. You think not as God does, but as human beings do.”
Yet Peter is a beacon of hope. While we do not see a complimentary picture of Peter in the Gospel today, we know this is not the full picture. Today we get only a partial view of Peter. On two more occasions, we also get partial images of Peter, which are not impressive; when he denied three times that he knew Jesus and when he did not go to Calvary while the Beloved Disciple and the women went. But Peter is completely transformed later. In the Acts of the Apostles, again and again, we see Peter acting courageously after Pentecost. He was brought before the Sanhedrin twice just after Pentecost for preaching about Jesus and was imprisoned once. Instead of denying Jesus, he considered it an honor to suffer for Jesus. At the end of John’s Gospel, Jesus tells him he will be martyred, just like Jesus. Peter was crucified just to the left of St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome and buried in the nearest cemetery, which is under the high altar of St. Peter’s. A tradition tells us that Peter asked to be crucified upside down because he did not consider himself worthy of being crucified in the same way as Jesus. So whether it is our sin or the sins of others that are a skandalon - a stone to make us trip - we can have great hope because of Peter.
Clearly, Peter went from a small stone or skandalon that makes one trip on one’s journey to become someone powerful, mighty, a Rock, the first Pope. What changed? Peter’s faith in Jesus grew so that he no longer acted under impulse but under the power of the Holy Spirit. We see two alternatives in Peter; rejecting the cross and being a stone to make one trip, or accepting the cross to live a new life in union with Jesus. We cannot have Jesus without the cross.
God Bless You, Fr. Thomas

Fr. Thomas,
Thank you for your joyful preaching of the Gospel and your pastoral service to the people of God at St. Cecelia's. Jesus Christ, the Good Shepherd, is your guide at all times. Imitating the Good Shepherd, you are always there for your flock – lending a hand, offering a prayer, inspiring and encouraging, shepherding, and supporting. May the grace of His Spirit increase in you each day as you do the Father's will among his flock. God Bless you and reward you with many happy years of priestly service!
Good luck at St. James. We will miss you!
My Dear Family of St. Cecelia,
"I thank my God, each time I think of you, and when I pray, I pray with gladness."
It was truly an honor, a privilege, and I am genuinely joyful for having spent six years as your pastor in this community. I am truly edified and have grown through the many challenges which could become the stepping stones for me to minister to my new parish of St. James. You know, when I came here I had no gray hair on my head now I do have a few gray ones! We had a great many challenges, and we overcome them all. Whatever I have experienced here in Iselin, cannot be reproduced or reinvented elsewhere, for Iselin and the community of St. Cecilia remains unique and special for me. I am glad to have experienced the uniqueness and specialty of this community.
One my first Sunday at St. Cecelia's, I said that I have no family or friends in this part of the world. But you are my family and friends. Yes, indeed, you have been my family and friends here. Thank you all for the great love and care you have showered upon me. You have been there in every thought, plan, activity, and prayer that I raise up to God. You have been there when I called you, invited you, and included you to be part of the Church. You were with me in every step that I took in building this community. The only goal I had in my heart was to bring you closer to God, not to me. Even though I wish to see you once and a while in my new parish, I wish you all will continue to be faithful members of St. Cecelia Parish. If you have witnessed Christ in me and my ministry, I am content. I strongly believe I completed the responsibility entrusted to me here. Everything we have accomplished here in these six years will continue to foster your spiritually here at St. Cecelia's. You have been an important part of my life and always will be. Thank you for everything that you have given me. Please forgive me in any way I have hurt or offend any of you. Please continue to pray for me, as I have always said; I survive on your prayers. If and when you remember me, pray one Hail Mary prayer for me. God Bless you all.
Fr. Thomas
ST. PETER CLAVER— “I am the slave of the slaves forever.” - (June 26, 1580 – September 8, 1654)Peter was a Spanish priest and missionary. He was born into a devoutly Catholic and prosperous family in Verdu, near Barcelona, in Catalonia, Spain (285 miles NE of Madrid by air distance). He joined the Jesuits and in 1610 was sent to Cartagena, a port at the northern tip of South America by the Caribbean Sea. It was the port of entry for African slaves where ten thousand slaves arrived every year. They were then headed for nearby yards to be scrutinized by crowds of land owners and mine owners. Local natives were considered ill-suited to work in the gold and silver mines and so mine owners met their labor requirements by importing blacks from Angola and the Congo who had been purchased in West Africa. Peter Claver was born seventy years after the colonial slavery culture came into being when King Ferdinand of Spain authorized the purchase of two hundred fifty slaves in Lisbon for his territories in New Spain. Now in the New Spain, Peter was staying at Jesuit houses while spending six years studying theology before ordination deeply committed to serve these slaves. During this time he became aware of the harsh treatment and living conditions of the black slaves. They had been captured and packed like animals into wooden ships. Given little water and food, they were chained to their spots. Some chained to the floor, lying in their own filth, and others to narrow shelves built into the wall to which they were tied day and night. The smell that came from the ship was terrible and diseased faces were wretched. In the two month voyage almost a third of the slaves would die and their bodies tossed overboard as garbage. After ordination Peter Claver began his mission. Days before a ship would arrive he would go from house to house, begging the towns people for food to share with the slaves. When the ship arrived he would go to the wharf and talk his way past the captain. It was difficult to move on the ship because the slave traffickers had filled them to capacity. He would bring medicine and food and with the help of interpreters and pictures, he would also try to communicate something of the principles of Christianity. He tried to give them a sense of their human dignity and their preciousness in the eyes of God -- which was a challenge considering that this was the religion of their slave masters. His message was one that of itself subverted the slave trade. Businesses and civil authorities saw in his ministry an undermining of their lucrative commerce. Peter tried to follow the slaves to their plantations and mines and look after their material and spiritual welfare, also to ensure they received their Christian and civil rights. In 1650, he was struck by the outbreak of the plague which left him physically helpless, too ill to leave his room. For four years he was largely forgotten and physically abused and starved by an ex-slave who was hired by the Superior of his house to care for him. He never complained. When he died the city that had treated him with reserve, now competed to honor his memory. For thirty-eight years this “slave of the slaves forever” had been devoted to caring for African slaves, baptizing over three hundred thousand. He is the patron of Columbia and of all missions to black people. In the United States his memorial is an obligatory memorial.
