Pastor's Message
The month of October each year is dedicated to the Most Holy Rosary. This is primarily due to the fact that theliturgical feast of Our Lady of the Rosary is celebrated annually on October 7. It was instituted to honor theBlessed Virgin Mary in gratitude for the protection that she gives the Church in answer to the praying of theRosary by the faithful.
The feast was introduced by Pope St. Pius V (1504-1572) in the year 1571 to commemorate the miraculousvictory of the Christian forces in the Battle of Lepanto on October 7, 1571. The pope attributed more to the"arms" of the Rosary than the power of cannons and the valor of the soldiers who fought there (Please note thatthis does not imply any negativity toward any race, religion, or class of people today).
Legend tells us that the Rosary as a form of prayer was given to St. Dominic (1170-1221) by Mary, the Mother ofOur Lord, who entrusted it to him as an aid in the conflicts with the Albigensians. The Dominican Pope, St. Pius V,did much to further the spread of the Rosary and it thereafter became one of the most popular devotions inChristendom. It was the same Pope St. Pius V, who in 1569 officially approved the Rosary in its present form withthe Papal Bull, Consueverunt Romani Pontifices. It had been completed by the addition of the second half of the"Hail Mary" and the "Glory be to the Father" at the conclusion of each mystery.
Middle Ages where it came into being in various medieval monasteries as a substitute for the Divine Office forthe lay monks and devout lay persons who did not know how to read. Instead of the 150 psalms, they would pray150 "Our Fathers" counting them on a ring of beads known as the crown or "corona." With the growth ofpopularity of Marian devotion in the twelfth century, the "Psalter of the Blessed Virgin Mary" developed nowsubstituting 150 "Hail Marys" in place of the "Our Fathers."The 150 "Hail Marys" were subsequently subdivided into fifteen decades by the young Dominican friar, HenryKalkar (1328-1408), with each decade referring to an event in the life of Jesus and Mary. The Dominican, Alanusde Rupe (1428-1478) further divided the episodes in the history of salvation into joyful, sorrowful, and gloriousmysteries. He also attributed the origin of the Rosary, then known as the "Psalter of the Blessed Virgin" to St.Dominic and thus spurred the Dominican Order to make the Apostolate of the Rosary their special concern. Many other Religious Orders and Lay Faithful, since then, have promulgated the Rosary with notable results.
Pope John Paul II called the Rosary his favorite prayer, in which we meditate with Mary upon the mysteries whichshe as a mother meditated on in her heart (Lk. 2:19) (Osservatore Romano, 44; 30 Oct. 1979). In 2002, John PaulII added the Luminous Mysteries to the Rosary bringing the total number of Mysteries to 20.
One of the great promoters of the Rosary in the 20th century was Fr. Patrick Peyton. He coined the phrase "TheFamily that Prays Together Stays Together." It is interesting to note that Fr. Peyton was recently declaredVenerable by Pope Francis. This declaration paves the way for the possibility in the future of him being declareda Saint. Interesting to note that Fr. Peyton's grave is located right here in Easton, Massachusetts on the groundsof Stonehill College. As you can see from the photo below, many people leave rosaries on the tombstone ofVenerable Fr. Patrick Peyton. The tradition is that as they leave one, they also take one and pray for the personthat left that rosary before them.
We here at St. Anthony's are trying to encourage individuals and families to pray the rosary every dayMay Our Lady bless you! - Fr. Michael

29º Domingo do Tempo Comum
É no

29th Sunday in Ordinary Time (Cycle B)
The sons of Zebedee hardly know what they’re asking intoday’s Gospel. They are thinking in terms of how the
Gentiles rule, of royal privileges and honors.
But the road to Christ’s kingdom is by way of His cross. To share in His glory, we must be willing to drink the cup
that He drinks.
The cup is an Old Testament image for God’s judgment. The wicked would be made to drink this cup in
punishment for their sins (see Psalm 75:9; Jeremiah25:15, 28; Isaiah 51:17). But Jesus has come to drinkthis cup on behalf of all humanity. He has come to be
baptized—which means plunged or immersed—into thesufferings we all deserve for our sins (compare Luke
12:50). In this He will fulfill the task of Isaiah’s sufferingservant, whom we read about in today’s First Reading.
Like Isaiah’s servant, the Son of Man will give His life asan offering for sin, as once Israel’s priests offered
sacrifices for the sins of the people (see Leviticus 5:17-19). Jesus is the heavenly high priest of all humanity, aswe hear in today’s Epistle. Israel’s high priests offeredthe blood of goats and calves in the temple sanctuary.
But Jesus entered the heavenly sanctuary with His ownblood (see Hebrews 9:12).
And by bearing our guilt and offering His life to do thewill of God, Jesus ransomed “the many”—paying theprice to redeem humanity from spiritual slavery to sinand death. He has delivered us from death, as we
rejoice in today’s Psalm.
We need to hold fast to our confession of faith, astoday’s Epistle exhorts us. We must look upon our trialsand sufferings as our portion of the cup He promised to
those who believe in Him (see Colossians 1:24). Wemust remember that we have been baptized into His
passion and death (see Romans 6:3).
In confidence, let us approach the altar today, thethrone of grace, at which we drink the cup of His saving
blood (see Mark 14:23-24).
