RSPN's outreach now stands at over 4.3 millionhouseholds. This unfolding of its reach beyondprevious limits occurred in the midst of importantdevelopments. Completion of the 1,000th Domestic Biogas Plantin Pakistan Celebrated
14 July 2011 - The Pakistan Domestic Biogas Programme(PDBP) celebrated the completion of the 1,000th biogas plantin Pakistan. Mr. Sohaib Sultan Khan, Chairperson RSPN,together with the biogas plant owner, inaugurated the 1,000thplant in the Sargodha district of Pakistan. Programme partnersfrom Winrock International, government agencies, SNV andRSPN were present, along with Biogas construction companiesand local community members. RSPN implements PDBP withfinancial support from the Embassy of the Kingdom of theNetherlands and technical support from SNV, a Dutchorganization, and Winrock International. In 2007, Winrockand SNV conducted a feasibility study that revealed thetechnical potential for 5 million domestic biogas plants inPakistan. PDBP was designed with a vision to create acommercially viable domestic biogas sector in Pakistan, withan installation target of 300,000 biogas plants in 10 years.These plants supply biogas to households for cooking andlighting, and offer multiple benefits related to energy, healthand sanitation, agriculture, employment and the environment.
National Conference Discusses Policies andStrategies on Drinking Water, Sanitation andHygiene Promotion
28-29 July 2011 - RSPN, in partnership with the PlanningCommission and UNICEF, conducted the two-day "NationalConference on Provincial Policies and Strategies for DrinkingWater, Sanitation and Hygiene Promotion." The chief guestat the event was Dr. Ishfaq Ahmad, Advisor to the PlanningCommission. The conference also featured Mr. Dan Rohrmann,UNICEF's Country Representative and Ms Shandana Khan,CEO RSPN.
It is estimated that water, sanitation and hygiene relateddiseases cost Pakistan’s economy about Rs. 112 billion peryear. About 1,100 children die daily in Pakistan due to poorsanitation and waterborne diseases. The purpose of the eventwas to share the main features of the drafted provincial policiesand strategies on water, sanitation and hygiene, and to arriveat a unified vision that will lead to a more effective andharmonised approach throughout the country. This nationalconference worked to agree on a roadmap and a frameworkfor action in each of the provinces, to pursue more objectivelythe preparation of the relevant policies, strategies and actionplans.
USAID's Small Grants Program and the U.S.Ambassador’s Fund Program Complete One Year
August 2011 - USAID’s Small Grants Program and the U.S.Ambassador’s Fund Program have successfully completedtheir first year. The ensuring one year period witnessed twoinnovative projects being approved under the USAID’s Small
Grants Program amounting to $500,000, and 30 stand-aloneprojects approved under the U.S. Ambassador’s Fund Program,amounting to $2.5 million. These approved projects involvework and activities for the betterment of Pakistan’s futurethrough supporting grassroots development. These projectsvariously include the provision of shelter for 150 flood-affectedorphanage girls in Swat, the establishment of 3 vocationalcentres in Punjab for women’s economic growth, and theconstruction of 175 bio-gas plants in district Dera Ismail Khan.NRSP is the prime contractor of USAID for both of these twofive-year, countrywide programmes, while RSPN and KPMGTaseerHadi & Co Chartered Accountants are sub-partners ofNRSP.

WASH experts from across Pakistanparticipated in the national conference
USAID-RSPN's Assessment and StrengtheningProgram Completes One Year
September 2011 - The USAID funded, RSPN implementedAssessment and Strengthening Program (ASP-RSPN) hassuccessfully completed its first year. Launched in October2010 to build the capacity of vital local institutions in Pakistan,ASP-RSPN completed a variety of critical assignments in thefollowing year. It completed the Third Party Validation (TPV)of Citizens’ Damage Compensation Program (CDCP) in 39districts, making it possible for both the government anddonors to disburse cash grants amongst the 2010 flood affectedhouseholds. Moreover, ASP-RSPN also completed the pre-award assessments of five for-profit organizations. The projectalso provided technical assistance to two USAID-funded

programmes in Sindh, the Municipal Services Delivery Program(MSDP) and the Sindh Basic Education Program (SBEP).
USAID-RSPN's Bahaal Project Provides Assistanceto Communities Affected by the 2011 Floods
September 2011 - Having already assisted a total of 95,906households across 16 districts in Pakistan's worst affected bythe floods of 2010, USAID-RSPN's Bahaal project has receiveda $100,000 extension to continue its flood relief and recoverywork into the 2011 floods. Focusing now specifically on 3,500households in southern Sindh, the worst affected area in thecountry, and providing assistance in the sectors of emergencyshelter and WASH, the extended project will continue at leastuntil November 2011. Bahaal's extension is part of the largerassistance effort USAID has launched in the affected areas ofSindh that will see 50,000 families provided with safe drinkingwater, shelter, sanitation and hygiene supplies, and basichealth care.
In solidarity with the flood affected communities, the Directorof the USAID mission in Pakistan, Mr. Andrew Sission visitedBahaal's operations in Badin, one of the areas worst affectedby the current floods. "Response from the American peoplehas been consistent with our humanitarian values and ourdeep commitment to Pakistan. The United States stands firmlycommitted to assisting Pakistani people in times of naturaldisasters", said the USAID official.
ISET-RSPN Project on Post-Floods Research Begins
September 2011 - RSPN, in partnership with ISET, has launchedan 18-month research project that will generate knowledgeon climate-related hazards in the Indus basin in Pakistan and

their impact on marginalized communities. This new knowledgewill be used to identify the vulnerability of communities interms of gateway services and access to these services, andto develop corresponding strategies to build disaster resilience.
Since the research will take place in different parts of Pakistan,RSPN will use the nationwide outreach of its member RSPsto coordinate the project across the country. RSPN will alsoensure that the findings are disseminated to rural communitiesmobilised by the RSPs.
RSPN Expands its UNICEF-funded Polio AwarenessActivities
September 2011- Following the successful completion of itsKarachi-based efforts with UNICEF in June 2011, RSPN hasnow expanded its polio awareness initiative with UNICEFSindh for three more months: September, October andDecember 2011. During these months, RSPN will work in 37high-risk union councils in five districts of Sindh. RSPN isimplementing this project in partnership with three RSPs i.e.NRSP for Hyderabad, SGA for Karachi and SRSO for Ghotki,Larkana and Jacobabad.
RSPN and its partner RSPs have already successfully completedtheir activities for the month of September. For this month'scampaign, 890 women and men campaigners were enlisted,and in a period of ten days, 276,681 households from targetedunion councils were made aware of polio and upcoming poliovaccination days. Polio awareness messages were alsodisseminated through a variety of other means, such as cornermeetings, religious institutions, mega phone announcements,and cable channel advertisements.
RSPN's Flood Recovery Effort in Swat SuccessfullyConcludes
September 2011 - RSPN's American Pakistan Foundation(APF) funded $200,000 early recovery effort in the floodaffected district of Swat has been successfully completed. Theproject saw 33 microinfrastructure projects constructed in thearea, with included drinking water systems and sanitation,handpumps, link roads, irrigation channels, and streetpavements. The project benefited 3,630 households,representing a population of 25,000. Swat was one of theworst affected districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) in theAugust 2010 floods, where most of the infrastructure waseither damaged or destroyed.
RSPN's member organization in KPK, SRSP, locallyimplemented work on these microinfrastructures whileassuming a participatory approach: 33 male and femaleCommunity Organisations (COs) were created, that in turnworked with SRSP field engineers to help build or rehabilitatemicroinfrastructure in their respective communities. Earlier,on 21 July 2011, APF highlighted this project in a press eventit held with the PepsiCo Foundation.

Beneficiaries of USAID-RSPN Flood AssistanceMeet the Press
22 September 2011 - Beneficiaries from across Pakistan,representing communities that have received flood assistancefrom three USAID funded, RSPN implemented projects spoketo the national media to highlight their recovery and to alsoemphasize the need for further assistance, not only forthemselves but also for the affectees of the current, 2011floods. The three projects represented were: the EmergencyRelief project, the Bahaal project and the Sindh AgricultureRecovery (SARP) project. Representing over $25 million inassistance from the American people, the three projectscollectively benefited over 1 million flood affected Pakistanis.The projects provided both emergency relief and recoveryassistance, ranging from food and non-food items, temporaryand one-room shelters, agricultural and livestock inputs, andWASH (water, sanitation and hygiene) services.
