A MESSAGE FROM OUR NEW PASTOR

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, It is a great joy for me to be arriving here at St. John the Baptist and St. Thomas the Apostle Parishes as your new pastor. I am very much looking forward to meeting all of you and getting to know you. I’m grateful to Fr. John for the way in which he has shepherded you these past twenty-one years. I am blessed to be following in the footsteps of someone who is a very capable pastor and one whom I’ve respected for a very long time. I’m very much looking forward to being on mission to these parishes with Fr. Paul and Fr. Kevin and all of the capable staff that I am inheriting.

It is interesting that my first weekend with you is also the weekend that our nation celebrates Independence Day. This weekend we will cele-brate our nation’s independence from the British Crown back in 1776. In the Declaration of Independence, the Founding Fathers enumerated the reasons they had for separating from Great Britain. Independence has always been a hallmark of American society and our way of life. If left unchecked, however, a spirit of independence can sometimes cause us to be distanced from others, especially those whom we need. As I begin my time with you, I am greatly aware of my dependence, not my independence. As a community of faith, we must learn to rely on one another and, more importantly, God. I will depend upon you to help me to learn about the history and personality of each parish and community. I will depend upon you, also for your prayers during this time of transition and beyond, as well as your patience as I learn your names and faces and stories. Remember – you have only one new face around here; I have many! Let us, together, continue to learn how to depend on Jesus to be our strength in every moment of our lives. Let us, together, seek to be nourished by His word and the sacraments, especially the Eucharist and, in doing so, learn to rely on one another as a community. I look forward to meeting each of you very soon.

Fr. Derek

Fr. Derek

"I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, always offering prayer with joy in my every prayer for you all,

in view of your participation in the gospel from the first day until now.

For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work among you will complete it by the day of Christ Jesus. "

(Letter of St. Paul to the Philippians 1:3-6)

To all of you who were so kind and generous in so many ways over these

last few weeks I thank you and ask for

you every grace and blessing of the Lord as I enter upon this new path in the journey of

priesthood. You will be in my prayers

especially during my retreat in Colorado.

Fr. John MacInnis

St. Joseph in Sacred Art

In the Early centuries of Christianity, Saint Joseph appeared only in images of the Nativity, likely because

that is where he is found in Scripture. Most of the narrative surrounding Joseph comes from the Gospel of Matthew and the traditional accounts documented in the Protoevangelium of James. Some of the oldest extent im-

ages of Joseph can be seen among the icons of Saint Catherine’s Monastery in Egypt’s Sinai.

In these images, dating from perhaps as early as the 7th century, Mary is central to the scene, the animals adore the infant Christ, as angels, magi, shepherds, and maids

attend our Lord, and musicians play. Saint Joseph is shown in what for centuries became his characteristic

pose. He sits in the corner of the cave, chin in hand, pon-dering what James calls “Joseph’s Troubles” –

the awesome and terrible responsibility of the care and protection of God incarnate as a human child.

Reading I Ez 2:2-5

As the LORD spoke to me, the spirit entered into me and set me on my feet, and I heard the one who was speaking say to me: Son of man, I am sending you to the Israelites, rebels who have rebelled against me; they and their ancestors have revolted against me to this very day. Hard of face and obstinate of heart are they to whom I am sending you. But you shall say to them: Thus says the LORD GOD! And whether they heed or resist—for they are a rebellious house— they shall know that a prophet has been among them.

Responsorial Psalm Ps 123:1-2, 2, 3-4

(R) Our eyes are fixed on the Lord, pleading for his mercy.

To you I lift up my eyes who are enthroned in heaven — As the eyes of servants are on the hands of their master (R)

As the eyes of a maid are on the hands of her mistress, So are our eyes on the LORD, our God, till he have pity on us. (R)

Have pity on us, O LORD, have pity on us, for we are more than sated with contempt; our souls are more than sated with the mockery of the arrogant, with the contempt of the proud. (R)

Reading II 2 Cor 12:7-10

Brothers and sisters: That I, Paul, might not become too elated, because of the abundance of the revelations, a thorn in the flesh was given to me, an angel of Satan, to beat me, to keep me from being too elated. Three times I begged the Lord about this, that it might leave me, but he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness.” I will rather boast most gladly of my weaknesses, in order that the power of Christ may dwell with me. Therefore, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and constraints, for the sake of Christ; for when I am weak, then I am strong.

Alleluia

R. Alleluia, alleluia. The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, for he sent me to bring glad tidings to the poor. (R) Gospel Mk 6:1-6 Jesus departed from there and came to his native place, accompanied by his disciples. When the sabbath came he began to teach in the syna-gogue, and many who heard him were astonished. They said, “Where did this man get all this? What kind of wisdom has been given him? What mighty deeds are wrought by his hands! Is he not the carpenter, the son of Mary, and the brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? And are not his sisters here with us?” And they took offense at him. Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his native place and among his own kin and in his own house.” So he was not able to perform any mighty deed there, apart from curing a few sick people by laying his hands on them. He was amazed at their lack of faith.
