On September 25, 1773, John Pitcher, of Culpeper County, Virginia, made the following will:
In the name of God amen I John Pitcher of Culpeper County being in perfect senses and memory do make this my last will and Testament. Imprimis I give my soul to almighty God that gave it me and my body to the earth to be buried at the discretion of my Executors hereafter named and my worldly Estate I give as followeth -
Item I give to my son John Pitcher one hundred acres of land whereon I now live to him and his heirs and assigns forever and likewise one Smooth Gun.
Item I give to my Daughter Mary Pitcher and Sarry Pitcher one hundred acres of land to be equally divided between the*.
Item I give to my Daughter Elizabeth Pitcher fifteen pounds current money to be lent and upon interest untill she becomes of age cr marrys.
Itea I give to ay Daughter Rachel fi^cher fifteen pounds current money to be lent out and upon interest untill she becomes of age or marrys and the rest of my estate to be equally divided between ay children and they to have it as they come of age.

This last will and Testament of John Pitcher Deceased - was Exhibited to the Court by Frances Pitcher and Robert Saith the Executors named and was Proved by the oath of Thomas Bryan and Benjamin Roberts Jr. witnesses thereto and Ordered to be Recorded and on the motion of the said Executors Certificate is granted then for Obtaining a probat (sic) thereof in due fora they having made oath thereto and gave bond and Security according to law.

It would appear probable that Morgan Pitcher, husband of Henrietta Noland, both of Estill County, Kentucky, was a descendant of the Pitchers, John or Thoaas, of Culpeper County, Virginia. It is recalled that Elizabeth Pitcher, daughter of Morgan Pitcher and Henrietta (Noland) Pitcher, aarried Henry Noland, who went froa Madiaon County, Kentucky, to Jackson County, Missouri, before 1826. Ia that year, Henry Noland and Elizabeth Pitcher were aarried in Clay County; their eon, Jease Noland (the first born of their children) was born toward th* end of 1826 ln Jackson County, Missouri. He was the first male whit* child born in Jackson County, Missouri, as constituted. He aarried Nancy Ann Saallwood, daughter of Elijah Saallwood and Nancy (Benton) Saallwood. The latter were the ancestors of the Mancos, and Saguache, Colorado, Nolands.

In a letter, dated April 6, 1975, William Henry Pitcher, of Winter Park, Florida, wrote to William T. Lockett, compiler of this book, as follows:
Pitchers are mentioned in the Visitation of London, but no arms are given. One was Alnager of the City of London, I believe, around 1634. There is a book in the Library of Congress that states that the first of the family came to Brecknockshire, Wales, with the brother of William the Conqueror and lived at Stradowy Castle. This book also states that the line has proven difficult to trace because it produced many daughters but few males. This is still true. My line has produced only sons of only sons ever since coming to Maryland.
I enclose Xerox copies of my line back to Thomas Pitcher of London, who bought land in Anne Arundel County, Md. and died there in 1790. Prior to the Revolution there was a Major Pitcher in Maryland as an agent for the King froa 1754-1774. I have always thought he was the father of my ancestor. I have brought my line down to my grandchildren...
My father as a young man saw a "gold" sash that had been given, so the family tradition said, to Admiral Pitcher who is said to have died about 1660, for services to the King. A New England record refers to a girl, Nazareth Pitcher, a descendant of the Admiral. A search of the Admiralty records in the Peabody Library in Baltimore failed to turn up any Pitcher. Many Admirals were created at the time of the Armada and thereafter, however.
There is a faally of Pitchers in Broones Island, Maryland, with similar first names: Thomas, John, et cetera. They came to America a few years after my family and I have never been able to find any blood relationship.

Thomas Pitcher, above, reported to be descendant of Admiral Pitcher, of England. Admiral Pitcher died in 1660.

Thomas Pitcher owned "Rich Neck," 300 acres, on Curtis Creek and Long Cove, Anne Arundel County, Maryland.
Will of Sarah Pitcher, of Anne Arundel County, Maryland:
"I give to my son Thomas Pitcher one negro girl called Frances, one cow and one negro called Hopewell. I give to my son James Pitcher the sum of $100.00 and one cow.
"I give to my daughter Sarah McCarthy one cow.
"I give to ny daughter Mercy Pitcher one negro girl called Hagar and $30.00
"I give unto ray grandaughter Mary Ann McCarthy the sum of (?). My will and desire is that my son, Thomas Pitcher, shall pay unto my son James Pitcher the sua of $50.00.
"My further will is that the residue of my estate shall be equally divided between my daughter Sarah McCarthy, Mercy Pitcher and ay sons Thomas Pitcher and James Pitcher."

James Pitcher, a farmer of "Rich Neck" and Methodist Minister. James Pitcher married Sarah Cromwell, August 17, 1816, married by the Rev. Welsh at Baltimore, Maryland.
James Pitcher married, secondly, Margaret E. Hodges, August 14, 1821. Married by the Rev. Shane at Baltimore, Maryland. Sarah Cromwell, Pitcher's first wife, was the granddaughter of Basil Smith.

Note of compiler. The Maryland Pitchers lend another dimension, complicating the search for the roots of the Pitchers. I t i s believed, however, that the Pitchers of Jackson County, Missouri, probably had their origins in America in Maryland, thence to Virginia, and thence to Kentucky, Missouri, e t cetera.

He at tended the' Indian Creek grade school and was graduated-' from, the Normal School, now Southeast Missouri State College, and afterward entered St. Louis University when he was. graduated in dentistry.
