WHO’S WHOAT LEIGH CENTURIONS FROM THE TOP

LEIGH MINERSI must send out massive congratulations to Leigh Miners on theirconvincing win against Oxford in the Challenge Cup last weekend, particularly after the hassles over where the game was to be played. As it turned out the wide open spaces of LSV suited Miners and they playedsome great rugby – I’m writing this before the 5th Round draw but I hopewe have both got attractive opposition! It was great to see the way theLeigh community got behind the Miners and fantastic to see the way theplayers, staff and supporters at Leigh Centurions got behind them. Leighplayers like Martyn Ridyard, Adam Higson, Tommy Goulden and JonnyPownall , who have all come through the Miners’ ranks were proud as Punchat the final hooter.

LCTVThe club’s dedicated TV channel goes from strength to strengthand the publicity generated by the clip of Fui’s try celebrationagainst London quickly went viral and was shown on televisionchannels in this country and in Australia. It was a spontaneous show of celebration by a player who has quicklybecome a hero of the Leigh public. We have moved quickly, however, tounderline to our players that we do not wish to see a repeat of this type oftry celebration. We were delighted when Fui extended his contract for asecond year and the fact that the popular Sean Penkywicz is also staying atthe club was equally well received.

EASTEREaster is a busy time for Rugby League and the players have twogames in four days next weekend. We travel to South Leeds Stadium for a 2pm kick-off on Good Friday andthen welcome Workington Town on Easter Monday. Please note that thisgame has a 1-30pm kick-off. It’s amazing how time flies and it doesn’t seemlike 20 years since Leigh played the first game to be staged at Hunslet’s newground.

MILESTONESThe milestones are coming thick and fast and it was great to seeRyan Brierley join the illustrious lit of players to score 100 tries forthe club with the second of his brace against London. Ryan is only the tenth player in Leigh history to achieve the feat and it wasfabulous that three of the list- John Woods, Rod Tickle and Dave Ingram werepresent to join Paul Rowley and Derek Beaumont in presenting Ryan with aspecial award after the game. This afternoon, if selected, our club captain Oliver Wilkes his due to make his400th senior appearance. Congratulations Skipper, that is someachievement!I’d also like to pass on the club’s congratulations to Simon Baldwin who celebrates his 40th birthday next Tuesday. Simon will be at today’s gamewith his wife Joanne and family and we hope they have a great day.

WELCOME TO WHITEHAVENOn behalf of everyone at Leigh Centurions I would liketo welcome the players, officials and supporters ofWhitehaven to the LSV for today’s match.I hope it is an exciting game played out in front of a goodcrowd and may the best team win!

TODAY'S MARKETING ANDENTERTAINMENTAs you may be aware, today’s matchday activitieshave been organised by the students of WestleighHigh in conjunction with Leigh Centurions CommunityTrust. They have done the planning, organising and implementationof a full programme of events in support of the Breast CancerCharity including encouraging people to wear pink as a sign ofsupport. I am delighted that the Centurions have been able towork alongside them and the commitment and creativityshown by everyone involved has been incredible! I would liketo thank everyone for their impressive efforts – I hope the sunshines and the day is a roaring success!

SO FAR, SO GOOD....Well as we approach today’s match we have a veryimpressive six wins from six games under our belt andthe season can certainly be said to be going well! What is even more impressive though is the manner in whichthe wins have been achieved. From the great fightback againstthe Bulls to the hard slog in the mud of Halifax to thechampagne rugby of last week’s match against London, wehave shown that we can play great rugby in any circumstances.

Paul and his support team have encouraged an exciting brandof rugby and this is being reflected in the attendances we areattracting to LSV – everyone likes to see fast, flowing rugby, especially when it results in a win – and I hope we are allroyally entertained for the rest of the season!

FALSE ECONOMYIt has been a great disappointment to the Centurionsto see way the Loan and Dual Registration system isbeing used by some of our competitors. When it was first brought in the plan was to enable young, fringe players at Super League clubs to gain valuableexperience by spending time at a lower level. The emergence ofJoe Greenwood at St Helens after his time at Rochdale is anexample of this working well.

However we are yet again treated to the fiasco of experiencedoverseas players turning out in the Championship to help withtheir fitness, whilst contracted players flounder in the stands.

It is particularly galling to see London, a team with themaximum central funding, turning up at LSV with JarrodSammut in their ranks rather than giving an academy graduatesome game time.

The London experiment has been running for 35 years now –compare their progress with that of NZ Warriors who recentlycelebrated their 20th anniversary…

COACH’SCORNER

WWW.LEIGHCENTURIONS.COM THE CENTURION 5

DAVE PARKINSON CAUGHT UP WITH HEAD COACH PAUL ROWLEY AFTER THE LADBROKESCHALLENGE CUP TIE AGAINST LONDON BRONCOS.

DP: PAUL THAT WAS AN OUTSTANDINGPERFORMANCE, I'M NOT GOING TO EVEN ASKWHERE THATS COME FROM BECAUSE I ALREADYKNOW – IT'S A CONTINUATION!

PR: The performance last week was very good and I know thatwe’ve continued that. Our opposition weren’t as resolute asFeatherstone last week, but nevertheless, I thought the way weplayed – we completed but we played with a lot of skill as well. The two don’t generally come together and you hear a lot ofcoaches say “we’ll try and express ourselves and play good rugbyso you can expect errors.”

Our error count was very low, but our skill level was very high. Itwas certainly good value for money and there was a memorablemoment at the end. Fui had been suffering with the ‘flu and therewas a doubt on whether he was going to play; but he was keen towith getting his new deal and securing his future with us. He waskeen to get on and that’s why we were very tentative with hisspells that he did, but he showed a desire to get on purelybecause he wanted to get a try in front of the North Stand. Youcould feel that one building like a pressure cooker couldn’t you?His celebration will live long in the memory and I think me andNeil (Jukes) were singing and jumping up and down at one pointjoining in. It was good.

It was a good day, I handed them a couple of days off and theyhave earned it; they have equalled the sixteen match unbeatenrecord, which was set last year and is in the history of our 137-year-old club. I’m delighted with them, they were brilliant.DP: THAT FIRST TWENTY MINUTES WASUNPLAYABLE AS FAR AS LEIGH WERE CONCERNED?

PR: Yeah we had some fun in that first twenty minutes and like Isaid, we didn’t spill much ball, but we certainly tested themdefensively and it’s like I said last week against Featherstone, whilst the score-line didn’t suggest we’d asked that manyquestions, their body language told me that we had them; we arehappy to pass the ball and you’ve seen that and no matter wherewe are; we’ll pass it behind our in-goal we are not bothered; thatis good; that’s what you pay your money for.DP: WELL IT'S CERTAINLY BETTER VALUE THAN YOUARE GETTING IN SUPER LEAGUE AT THE MOMENTWHICH SEEMS TO BE A LOT OF CAGEY RUGBY.

PR: Big comment Dave, big comment. But, London play a veryNRL style of rugby. Out of their own half it’s very low risk and oneout and waiting for errors in the opposition end. It’s just ourphilosophy; we are not prepared to wait, we’d rather take thingsinto our own hands and play our way out of trouble. That’s thephilosophy that we’ve had at this club and that myself and mystaff teach and the lads buy into it. It’s hard work but it’s fun andentertaining.

DP: YOU ALSO HAD RYAN BRIERLEY JOINING THEHUNDRED CLUB WHICH IS VERY SPECIAL, IS THATSOMETHING THAT YOU TAKE GREAT DELIGHT IN ASWELL?

PR: Yeah, Ryan is special and to score a hundred tries in such ashort space of time as well and against good opposition in atough environment and tough competition is a remarkableachievement and I’m proud of him, very, very proud of him. I’msure his family are and I speak on behalf of all his team-mates. Weare delighted for Ryan and delighted for us; because he’s scoringfor us.DP: THIS AFTERNOON YOUR BEST MATE SIMONBALDWIN WILL BE IN THE BANQUETING SUITE WITHHIS WIFE JOANNE AND FAMILY AS NEXT WEEK HECELEBRATES HIS BIG 40. YOU JUST BEAT HIM TO IT!A FEW WORDS ABOUT THE MAN EVERYONE CALLSSID?

PR: Myself and Sid have been very lucky as our childhoods werefantastic surrounded by great family and friends. I could tell youmany stories about Sid who incidentally was Christened Sid byTommy Martyn just in case anyone was wondering. To turn 40 andstill be stood together sharing stories and enjoying one another'scompany after all these years makes me feel very lucky to havesuch a good friend. I know where ever I am in the world orhowever long I haven't seen Sid for we will always remain the bestof friends. Good on ya Sid, have a good birthday! I have beenthinking and am considering buying you a pint today if you’relucky so make sure you have the camera on hand to document theoccasion. YOLO- you only live once.DP: AND FINALLY CLUB CAPTAIN OLIVER WILKES, IFSELECTED, PLAYS HIS 400TH CAREER GAME THISAFTERNOON AGAINST ONE OF HIS FORMER CLUBS.

PR: I would like to congratulate Oliver on the wonderfulachievement of playing 400 pro games. That is fantastic in itselfbut even more remarkable given that he is one of the clumsiestmen I have ever met. I first met Oliver whilst playing forHuddersfield were he shared a house with a young Chris Thormanwhich the Lancashire bus of myself, Rich Marshall and MartinGleeson would often use as our squat for the night. Oliver hasdefinitely grown up a lot since those days but the one momentthat will stay with me forever was a training ground incident inwhich Oliver and I collided or should I say Oliver ran into me. As Ichecked my head for blood I looked down at Oliver to see his facesmiling but missing a tooth which subsequently was lodged in theside of my head. All good fun! Oliver has been and continues to bea great pro and has mine and his teammate’s upmost respect.

Good work Ol!

2015 promises to be a landmark yearfor Leigh winger Steve Maden. With a busy testimonial programme plannedwhich included the recent game between aCenturions Select XIII and a combined LeighMiners/Leigh East, Maden has had to juggletraining, working and admin.

Maden recovered from a knee injury to playin his own testimonial game and has plentyto look forward to as the Kingstone PressChampionship Champions defend theircrown.

While he may not be a first team regularanymore, Maden is happy to be involved onthe coaching staff at Leigh as he gets used tolife on the sidelines.

“Leigh coach Paul Rowley and DerekBeaumont (Head of Rugby) have always beenhonest with me and I knew last season thatmy first-team chances would be limited,” hesaid.

“The intention was always to try and win theChampionship and of course we did that insome style. But I didn't have a problem withnot playing every week and I enjoyed taking

my first steps in coaching and helping outbehind the scenes.”

Maden worked alongside reserves coach PaulAnderson as well as playing last year. Like thefirst team, Leigh topped the table beforewinning the Grand Final in dramatic fashionagainst Sheffield Eagles with a last-minutetry.

“Ando (Paul Anderson) is a brilliant coachand he was the one who got me involved.I've really enjoyed it and looking ahead it issomething I'd like to continue with when myplaying career comes to an end.“

Although best known as a winger, he hasalso played in the centre, full-back and evenin the back row during a career which hasincluded two spells at Leigh.

He actually started out at Leigh in theacademy but after only a couple of weekswas offered a contract with Warringtonwhere he spent 12 months. Maden moved toSt Helens but with the likes of MartinGleeson and Paul Newlove ahead of him inthe pecking order, it didn't work out and in2004 Steve returned to Leigh, then coachedby Darren Abram.

He played a good number of games thatseason as Centurions won promotion to theSuper League though bad luck with injurymeant he missed both the Grand Finalsuccess over Whitehaven and the ArrivaTrains Cup Final victory against Hull KR.Maden was full-time during Leigh's oneseason in Super League before going toWhitehaven.

“I actually signed two different contractswith Whitehaven,” said Maden. "One wasfull-time and one part-time and it dependedhow Whitehaven did in the Grand Finalagainst Castleford. I flew out to Turkey for aholiday on the day of the final. So I was on

the plane not knowing who'd won - it feltlike a very long flight!

“So I was gutted when we touched downand I found out Whitehaven had lost. But Ihad a great time at Whitehaven. They are aclub that's a lot like Leigh in that they reallylook after their players. At that time therewas me, John Duffy and Rob Jackson makingthe trip up there from round here for trainingand games so we had some really goodtimes on that motorway.“

Maden returned to Leigh for 2007 - to playunder coach Darren Shaw and was part ofthe team which said farewell to Hilton Park. When Centurions relocated to the SportsVillage, Maden was again a first team regularfor several seasons.

But in 2014 with the emergence of Liam Kayand Andrew Higson as regular wingers,Maden's chance were limited though hecontinued to enjoy training and playing in thereserves.

With a testimonial on the horizon, Leighoffered him a contract for 2015 and the firstevent of his testimonial year was a race nightat Golborne Parkside. It proved a greatsuccess.

As well as a sell-out crowd, Centurionsplayers came along to show their supportalong with some of Maden's friends, StefanRatchford and Chris Hill from Warrington andIain Thornley of Wigan.

Maden's biggest fans are his six year old sonAlfie and wife Emma. “Alfie plays forGolborne Parkside and last year won acouple of awards,“ said Maden. “He lovesrugby league and Hilly (Chris Hill) is one ofhis favourite players. We recently holidayedwith Chris and his family at Center Parcs nearPenrith and a lot of the guests were askingChris for photos. Alfie found this very strangeand was asking ‘why do they want theirpicture with Hilly?’. He doesn't getstarstruck!“

LOCAL COMMUNITYCLUBS NEWS

JEFF GORSE SUMMARISESTHE LATEST NEWS FROM LEIGH MINERS RANGERS:

Leigh Miners Rangers reached the fifthround of the Ladbrokes Challenge Cupfor the first time in the club's history, becoming only the second amateurclub to reach that landmark after theall-conquering West Hull of 1996, withthis comprehensive win over LeagueOne semi-professionals Oxford. Thiswas Miners' second win over higher-ranked opposition in the competitionfollowing their 1999 win over Bramley, and the first amateur team giant-killingsince Siddal's 2010 win over Doncaster.

Beyond the stats and the archives this was agame of emotion and no small controversyfollowing the trials and tribulations as Minerswere ultimately denied the opportunity tostage the game at Twist Lane. Following aphenomenal social media backing andsupport from across the amateur andprofessional game and from as far afield asKuala Lumpur and Dubai, the match washosted at Leigh Sports Village with Minersneeding little further motivation. Oxford musthave developed something of a siegementality and in the opening stages theirgiant set of forwards dominated, recycling the

ball well through the burly forms of JordanAndrade and the tireless Ed Hayles, with onesuch offload creating the opening try on tenminutes as Kyle Danns found Jonny Payne insupport to crash under the posts from fivemetres out, Danny Allen goaling.

Once Miners had weathered that storm theygot to grips with the game and with ball inhand there was only one team in the contest, the Leigh side consistently breaking the linewith the elusive and powerful runs of TommyParkinson, Ellis Grimes, Jonny Youds andAdam Thomason. The amateurs pulled thefirst score back on the quarter mark, buildingpressure on the Oxford line and Scott O'Brienputting Grimes over for a four pointer. Asparkling piece of off-the-cuff rugby, takingplay from deep inside their own half throughThomason, then across field by Youds, andfinally Shaun Dowie and Mick O'Boyle puttingO'Brien in at the opposite corner, Youdsgoaling, had Miners ahead. Four minutesbefore the break and the lead was stretchedas pressure again built, Miners opting to tapa penalty rather than go for goal, and fromthat position O'Boyle crossed out wide foranother six- pointer.

The first try of the second half was going tobe pivotal and it came Miners' way asO'Brien's bomb caused panic in the Oxforddefence, fullback Louis Richards and wingerJonny Morris making a complete hash andHarry Gagen snapping up the loose ball tosaunter in for another converted score.Miners were now in complete command andthey split their opponents down the rightagain, Connor Ratcliffe shrugging off thetackles to score at the corner and Youdsagain with the conversion. With eight minutesremaining Miners iced the cake as they againstruck at the right channel, Thomasonstumbling, creeping and finally crawlingthrough the attempted tackles and wrestlinghis way over the line to score the final try.

It’s been a rollercoaster decade or so for Whitehaven. In both2004 and 2005 the Cumbrians came so close to reaching SuperLeague being edged out in the first instance by today’s hosts ina dramatic grand final.Having knocked on the door of the big time, a progressive downwardspiral began, culminating in relegation to the third tier for the 2011 seasonwith reduced attendances and reduced optimism about a Cumbrian sideever reappearing in the top flight.Whitehaven are now embarking on their third season back in theChampionship, but the season started in confusion regarding coaches.Steve Deakin, who had replaced Dave Woods left weeks before the start ofthe campaign due to personal reasons with halfback Brett Seymour havingto take the reins before James Coyle stepped up to the plate in a player-coach role. Two solid ninth-placed finishes hasn’t gone unnoticed. Top Championshipclubs have snapped up some of their prize assets including winger ShaunAinscough, halfback Cain Southernwood and forward Lee Mitchell allgoing to Batley, whilst Samir Tahraoui departed for Bradford. Yet, they havebrought in one or two recognisable faces.James Coyle initially signed as a squad member but has since taken on thecoaching role since he left Hunslet along with Thomas Coyle, who Leighfans will remember had a short stint at the club in 2013. Much travelledsecond rower Stephen Bannister also came to Cumbria after a spell inWales and he is joined by former Widnes man Dave Allen. The Irishinternational will bring experience and steel to the ‘Haven back row andhe has an eye for a try as well.Others who know their way to the try-line are the experienced heads in theback line. Craig Calvert has been a stalwart at the Recre’ and has scored ahat-full down the years. Craig is a Whitehaven legend and since signingfrom Wath Brow has scored over 200 tries- a remarkable achievement.David Seeds’ all-time club record of 248 tries is within his sights.Craig Calvert’s Whitehaven career to date is set out below:

The two PNG internationals also have the potential to cause damage.Jessie Joe Parker in the centres has been at the club three years now whilsthis compatriot Dion Aiye has come in this season from the PNG Huntersclub. The versatile playmaker has a good kicking game and a decent turnof pace so he is definitely one to keep tabs on.Brett Seymour is the standout man in the squad. The former NRL andSuper League halfback will be the orchestrator of the Whitehaven side. Hiskicking game and creative passing will be the key to unlock defences thisseason, and he could well be the difference for his side this season.Whitehaven have always had good amateur connections and with JohnPaul Brocklebank they have a very good former amateur. The ex-EgremontRangers pivot is a very talented individual and is yet another option in theplaymaking roles.Coming off the back of a famous win at home to the London Broncos,Whitehaven will have a great deal of confidence and they’ll be hoping togive the Centurions a run for their money despite their Challenge Cup exitat the hands of Featherstone Rovers last Saturday.

Leigh Centurionsare deeplysaddened tolearn of thepassing of MiltonHuddart (#963) atthe age of 54.Described as afitness fanatic, heworked atSellafield on the

West Cumbrian coast close to hishometown of Whitehaven and diedsuddenly of a heart attack. Milton was a talented back rowforward who joined Leigh for areported £20,000 fee from Carlisle inOctober 1986. He only played 25games for the club, scoring one tryand kicking one drop-goal but tookpart in a memorable season in whichLeigh came close to getting toWembley and then achieved aremarkable escape from relegation. Hewas remembered fondly by his formerteam-mates who have already paidtribute to him. The son of the Great Britaininternational Dick Huddart, regardedas one of the finest forwards in thehistory of the game who achieved cultstatus at three clubs- Whitehaven, StHelens and St George in Australia,Milton signed professional forms forhis native Whitehaven from Kells ARL.He made his first-team debut for‘Haven against Fulham in January1981 and soon became a first-teamregular. In October 1984 he was chosen to playfor England in an international againstWales at Ebbw Vale. Captained byLeigh’s Steve Donlan the star-studdedEngland team, which included DesDrummond, Garry Schofield, Ellery

Hanley and Andy Goodway won 28-9.Two years later he captained Cumbriaagainst the 1986 Kangaroos atBarrow, the tourists winning 48-12. After a fall-out with a team-mateMilton vowed never to play forWhitehaven again and he wastransferred to Carlisle for £25,000 inFebruary 1985 before joining up withTommy Dickens’ Leigh side as theyattempted to consolidate in the firstdivision following their record-breaking romp through the seconddivision when they won 33 of 34league games. He made his Leighdebut against Hull KR alongside theNew Zealand international centreJames Leuluai. With Leigh facing a relegation battleDickens was replaced mid-season byBilly Benyon and their fortunesimproved markedly. They reached thesemi-final of the Challenge Cup,suffering a heart-breaking 14-8 defeatagainst St Helens at Central Park afterdefeating Runcorn, Carlisle and Hull inprevious rounds. Undaunted, theyenjoyed a remarkable finish to theirleague campaign, winning eight oftheir last ten games and finallystaving off relegation with a dramaticlast-day victory over Warrington atWilderspool. Huddart kicked a drop-goal in thatmemorable 17-10 success and hadestablished himself as a Leighfavourite. A clever ball player andexcellent kicker, he was a talented all-round footballer whose easy-goingnature made him popular with fansand players alike. He usually had hissocks rolled down by his ankles andthough not the most physicallyimposing of forwards more than heldhis own against some tough first

division packs. “I remember Milton coming down forhis first training session,” recalls AndyCollier, who played alongside him inthe Leigh back row. “He was a down-to-earth, honest lad with a great senseof humour. He just got on witheverybody and had time for everyone.Billy Benyon was a very tough trainerand I remember one day he set theplayers off on a six-mile run from theground. Milton soon disappeared- hepopped into a local house where heknew someone and had a cup of teabefore using a short cut and joining usfor the last lap. “He was a talented player and couldcertainly kick a ball. We all knew hehad a famous father but he never oncementioned his dad. He got on with thegame. I remember one game againstCastleford when we lined up atWheldon Road for kick-off. Milton andme set off running full pelt until wesuddenly realised the ball was still onthe centre spot. It had been Milton’sjob to kick-off, but he’d forgotten inall the excitement. “I don’t know why he never playedagain after that season. He justseemed not to be there one day andthat was that. We never got chance tosay our farewells. I did meet up withhim nearly ten years later when I wasplaying for Widnes up at Workingtonand we had a good chat. He was agreat lad was Milton and his suddenpassing is very sad.” .............................................................Milton Huddart died on 14 March2015, aged 54. One minute’s silencewill be marked before today’s gameas a joint show of respect from theWhitehaven and Leigh clubs.

LEIGH CENTURIONSRUGBY SPONSORSHIP –IT’S THE FUTUREWhile watching a drab ManchesterUnited vs Chelsea match at OldTrafford, my corporate guests full ofthe proverbial “Prawn Sandwiches”, Istarted to question not only the vastsalaries these so called superstarswere being paid to bore my clients butalso could I make better use of mymarketing budget for the followingyear. As a boyhood Leigh fan, I suggested maybe

a rugby match would be a betterproposition, quickly championed by ourgroup buyer Neil Henderson, a boyhoodWhitehaven fan. We quickly searched theinternet for the best match, Leigh CenturionsVS Whitehaven, Sun 2nd March 3pm,perfect.

Initially we requested a corporate box toentertain colleagues and clients, howeverdecided to upgrade to become Matchsponsors for the day due to the tremendousvalue the package offered.

On arrival at Leigh, our guests wereabsolutely blown away with the venue, facilities and the friendly, professionalinteraction from the hospitality team, playersand directors. WHITEHAVEN’SLOCAL HEROMIKE LATHAM PAYS TRIBUTE TO WHITEHAVEN STAR CRAIG CALVERT

Whitehaven winger CraigCalvert is the ultimate LocalHero and over the past decadeor so has written himself intothe Club’s folklore. It is fitting to pay tribute to the flying wingeras he is celebrating his testimonial year aftera try-laden career with hopefully many morestill to come.Calvert, now 31, made his debut in 2004after signing from Wath Brow, scoring twotries against Rochdale Hornets in his firstgame. “I came from Moor Row and WathBrow was a great club to play for and learnmy trade,” he says. “They have a great set-up there, pretty much like Kells and I’m veryfortunate to have started off there.”Centre David Seeds immediately noticed hispotential and predicted that one day Calvertwould break his own club try-scoring record. The classy Seeds finally called it a day on hisplaying career having scored 248 tries forWhitehaven between 1993 and 2007. NowCalvert, who went through the 200-barrierlast season has Seeds’ record in his sights.“People keep updating me on how close I’mgetting,” Calvert says. “David was afantastic player to play alongside and hereally helped me settle in when I first signedprofessional. He took me under his wing andmade me feel comfortable.“He’s the best centre I’ve played with butJessie Joe Parker, my current centre is anoutstanding player and we have a reallygood understanding.”

Calvert signed for ‘Haven with the clubpushing for a place in Super League and inhis first two seasons played in two grandfinals. Each time he suffered heartbreak, mostnotably in the 2004 final when Leightriumphed 32-16 after extra-time after adramatic first 80 minutes had ended withthe scores locked at 16-16.The following year Castleford’s win, by 36-8was more clinical and ‘Haven’s dreams ofthe big time had gone.“The Leigh defeat was devastating,” Calvertsays. “We thought we had the game in thebag. But we missed chances to seal thegame and then in extra-time we just ran outof steam.“In 2005 Cas were a better outfit than us,even though we beat them at home. Theywere slightly too good for us and in the finala lot stronger.“It would have been great to get to SuperLeague. The club had sorted out one year’sleave for all the lads who worked atSellafield and we were really geared up forit, but it wasn’t to be.”Instead Calvert has stayed loyal toWhitehaven and changed his game from justbeing an out and out speedster to a wingerwith guile and nous and great finishingskills. “I nearly went to Warrington early inmy career but I’ve been happy to stay atWhitehaven,” he says. “It’s a fantastic familyclub, a lot like Leigh in that regard.”Calvert is looking forward to rubbingshoulders again with his Marras Gregg

McNally and Steve Maden. The former, ofcourse, went down in Leigh history byscoring the last try at Hilton Park in 2008, agame in which Calvert played. Maden hadtwo years at the Rec’ in 2006 and 2007 andlike Calvert is enjoying his benefit year.

“Gregg was still a young lad when he cameon the scene,” Calvert recalls. “He wasphenomenal for us and soon moved ontoHuddersfield and now to Leigh. He’s a greatbloke. Steve had two good years with us andwas great to play alongside like the otherlads from Leigh like Rob Jackson and JohnDuffy. We’ve had a few ding-dongs on thefield but we’re the best of friends off itwhich is how it should be.”

Calvert’s testimonial year is drawing to aclose. “We’ve concentrated on having a fewquality events and it’s gone well,” he says.“I’ve got a testimonial book coming outsoon and a lot of the lads I’ve playedalongside have written in it. I signed a two-year contract with the club at the start of theseason and I’m playing it by ear. I had anoperation on my foot in December and thatstill troubles me from time to time but I’mhoping to do the full two years and thenreassess.

“It was a bit of an uncertain start to theseason with the coach changing but we hada really positive result against London andplayed well against Dewsbury the previousweek. We have a good link-up with Widnesand the lads who have joined from therehave been good for us. We’re very positiveabout the rest of the season.”

Leigh’s trip to the Recreation Groundon Wednesday 28 April 1982 hasgone down in local history as one ofthe most momentous and importantgames ever played by the Club. The destination of the Division Onechampionship wrested on the game and anestimated 5,000 Leigh fans made the journeyto the Cumbrian coast to cheer on theirheroes. The previous Sunday Leigh had kepttheir title hopes alive with a thrilling 18-10win over Hull KR.

That was a dramatic afternoon in itself.Earlier Hull defeated Widnes 21-3 before acrowd of 18,260 at The Boulevard in a 2-30pm kick-off. Thousands of Hull fans thenstayed behind to listen to a commentary ofthe Leigh game, broadcast over the tannoysystem. An estimated 8,000 fans sat on thepitch and cheered every move of their archrivals Hull KR, knowing that if Rovers wonHull would be crowned champions.

The title race had been one of the mostexciting in the history of the game withWidnes, Hull and Hull KR all in contention. But now it all boiled down to one game- andif Leigh lost Hull would be champions.

Whitehaven had already been relegatedhaving gained just seven league points, buton a dustbowl of a pitch they put up asterling fight. At half-time the home side led4-1 and Leigh’s hopes of only their second

ever championship success were in thebalance.

Then Alex Murphy delivered a half-time teamtalk that has gone in RL folklore and Leighcame out like men possessed in the secondhalf.

Tries by Des Drummond, David Dunn andMick Hogan swept Leigh to victory by 13-4and as the final whistle sounded on theseason captain John Woods and histeammates were engulfed in a joyous tidalwave of emotions as hundreds of Leigh fansinvaded the pitch.

Woods was carried shoulder high through thesea of visiting fans to receive the prizedtrophy from the main stand.

Then known as the Slalom LagerChampionship the winners received a chequefor £10,000.

The historic programme for the game was amodest 16pp production including ninepages of adverts and cost 25 pence. ‘Clubnotes’ described the past season as the worstin Whitehaven’s history. “Most of the blame, despite suggestions to the contrary must belaid at the feet of just a few, key figures whohave left the storm brewing behind thescenes,” the article continued. “There is a lotthat I could suggest but I won’t, those in

charge of Haven’s fortunes know what mustbe done.”

‘Haven stalwart Michael Barwise wascelebrating his testimonial and eventsincluded a prize bingo evening, a Tattie Piesupper and concert evening, a footracingcompetition at the Recreation Ground and aspecial cricket game against North LancashireLeague champions Whitehaven.

Previewing the game the editor stated:“Today we welcome Leigh who need just onepoint to clinch the Championship. Leigh, coached and managed by Alex Murphy havemade remarkable progress in the past seasonand a half. At the turn of the year last seasonthey were like Whitehaven and heading forDivision Two.

Their remarkable recovery says much for thecalibre of Alex Murphy and his players. I noteAlex is quoted as saying: “Nobody could stopthese lads winning on Wednesday.” Formwould suggest that he is right. But we havehome advantage and the need to salvagesome pride and the coach and players owetheir magnificent supporters a really goodresult. So i suspect it will be a ding dongaffair. And if I were Alex Murphy I would bejust a shade more apprehensive. For all ofRugby League tonight is bound to be agrandstand finish.”

FUI GOES VIRAL!Fuifui Moimoi’s try celebration at theLSV against London Broncos quicklywent viral after LCTV Supremo FredParkinson posted the clip onYoutube. Within no time Fred’s phonewas in meltdown with requests forfootage flooding in from all cornersof the Rugby League World.

Fui was featured on the weekend edition ofthe Footy Show down under and Fox Sportsdid a special feature entitled ‘The Best TryCelebration in Years.’“Former Parramatta Eels prop Fui Fui Moi Moihas taken the phrase “grandstand finish” alittle too literally,” Fox Sports continued,“celebrating his try for Leigh Centurions inEngland by charging up the grandstandsstairs to celebrate with the club’s fans.“A popular figure in his NRL days, the Tonganprop put the icing on the cake as his sidethrashed London Broncos 64-12 to move intothe fifth round of the Ladbrokes ChallengeCup.”Closer to home Fui’s unique celebration of hisfirst try for the Centurions was in demandfrom BBC’s Super League show, LookNorthWest and ITV’s Granada Reports as wellas Sky Sports and BT Sport.By last Sunday evening the video clip hadalready had over 25,000 hits on You Tube.“He’s going right to the top of the stand,”says commentator Dave Parkinson in abrilliant video clip. “He’s dancing with thefans, he’s lapping it up, that’s absolutelymagnificent.”Fui warded off the effects of flu to take centrestage in a superb team performance, celebrating his contract extension announcedearlier in the day.Leigh Centurions were delighted to confirmthat they have exercised their contract optionand Fui has extended his deal with the Clubuntil November 2016.The former NRL and Tonga, New Zealand starsigned for the Club amidst a blaze of publicityafter eleven years with Parramatta Eels andhas rapidly made a big impact on and off thefield in his adopted town of Leigh. After making his debut in the Kingstone PressChampionship opener against Bradford Bulls

SET OF SIX

PLAY 1What exactly is a Marra and what areyour memories of Whitehaven?A Marra is just a mate. There's quite a lot of"slang" used back home. There are a fewphrases that I've said to people not fromthere and you'd think I had three heads theway they looked at me, but then again weall have three heads up there supposedly!

I have a lot of respect and I owe quite a lotto Whitehaven as a club and a place. Theygot me into rugby when I was youngwatching club legends like David Seeds,Aaron Lester, Leroy Joe and David Fatilofa. They also gave me my first professionalchance when I was 17 and I'll always begrateful for that.

PLAY 2So Paul Rowley broke your heart in2004 but you broke ours in 2008,scoring the last ever try at Hilton Park. Are we even? No, nothing will ever make up for that night.Even though it was 11 years ago, he's stillrubbing it in now everyday at training! It allgot worse when 'that picture' got "leaked"of me crying at the game, (blame MrsMcNally for that!). Rolls rang me straightaway and I knew exactly why he wasringing! That's my claim to fame, scoring thelast ever try at such a historic ground. It'ssomething I'm really proud of but I mustapologise to the Leigh fans for knockingthem out of the play-offs!

PLAY 3What’s more intense? A Whitehaven-Workington derby or a Leigh-Wiganone? You’ve played in both.

They're both massive games for both towns.Bragging rights mean a lot to people as itcan make your life brilliant at work or likehell! For me, growing up a Whitehaven fan,a Town v ‘Haven Derby meant a lot. It's just80 minutes of both sets of fans shouting"Jam Eaters" at each other. They really doget feisty but are great games to be involvedin, but only if you win. Luckily I've never lostto the "Jam Eaters" in a derby game. TheWigan-Leigh Derby is also a feisty game andgreat to be involved in. When we playedthem in the Challenge Cup at the DW it wasone of the best atmospheres I've played in.I'd love to experience playing in SuperLeague with two points on the line!

PLAY 4Would you be a regular goal-kicker atanother club but for Ridy? Do youenjoy the role? Is Ridy as good a dartsplayer as people say?Well everyone at the club knows I'm thebest goal-kicker they've ever seen but Ichose to just let Ridy kick as he feelsimportant doing it! I missed one kick in2013 against Fev here at the LSV from 75yards out in front of goal (well it wasactually 25m) and Ridy has never let me liveit down. At Whitehaven and Huddersfield Iused to kick goals when I played and lovedthe responsibility if I'm honest. I used tospend hours practicing as I was growing upon the Welfare back home at Kells. I'd loveto have another go when Ridy retires nextyear haha!

He thinks he's a great darts player butpeople say you’re only as good as your lastgame and his last game against me, and Iwon! He's not as good as he was due to himnot looking like a stereotypical darts player

anymore. It's really affecting his game. A bitof a breeze near the Oche and it blows himover he's that thin and light now!

PLAY 5It’s been a momentous year for Leigh-Double Winners, Heritage Day,#BelieveinLeigh etc, and you got yourphoto on the roadside. How good isthat?Last year was my best year ever playingrugby. It was so enjoyable on and off thepitch. It was an honour to get a HeritageNumber at such a great club and be part ofthe history. Winning the league and a grandfinal are stuff you dream of as a kid so to dothat was brilliant. I'm not so sure the peopleof Leigh enjoy seeing my face every day on alamppost, mind! All the boys are quick toremind me that although the picture looksgood the try was actually disallowed so theyjust laugh at me!

LAST TACKLE PLAYMust be a relief swapping living inYorkshire for life in Leigh? Are you anadopted Leyther now or will youalways be a Marra? You could say it's a relief yeah, my wifewon't be happy with that though as she's afull blooded Yorkshire girl! Yorkshire is abeautiful place and is Jonny Pownall'sfavourite place to visit. He never shuts upabout how much he loves it on the way toaway games and the way back! I agree withhim, it is a beautiful place when it's sunny,so it’s roughly beautiful three days out of365 a year! I love Leigh as a town; it's a lotlike Whitehaven in a way as it’s a massiverugby town. Living in Huddersfield hardlyanyone talks about rugby, it's all football soit's nice to be back in a rugby mad town. I'llalways be a Marra but like to think I'm anadopted Leyther too! One day I want tohave a statue at both grounds just like myhero Ste "Iron" Maden!

I'd like to just wish my wonderful kids Harryand Bella, Happy Birthday! Harry turned 2 acouple of weeks ago (17th March) and Bellaturns 3 on Tuesday (1st April). So if you seethem at the game today wish them HappyBirthday, they'll really appreciate it. Thanksfor reading, keep singing loud and proud!

GREGG MCNALLY IS A GREAT FANS’ FAVOURITE, AN ADOPTED LEYTHER AND HASHIS PHOTO HANGING FROM LAMPPOSTS AROUND TOWN AS PART OF THE#BELIEVEINLEIGH CAMPAIGN. BUT DEEP DOWN HE’S A MARRA FROM WHITEHAVENAND MORE THAN ANYONE IS LOOKING FORWARD TO TODAY’S GAME AS HE TAKESA SET OF 6 AGAINST HIS HOMETOWN CLUB.
