    BEIJING - Thursday, 30 June 2011,China has opened the world's longestcross-sea bridge.The Jiaozhou Bay bridge is 26 miles(42 kilometers) long and links China's

    eastern port city of Qingdao to anoffshore island, Huangdao.CCTV says the 110-foot (35-meter)-widebridge is the longest of its kind andcost more than 10 billion yuan ($1.5billion). CCTV also says the bridgepassed construction appraisals onMonday and the bridge and anundersea tunnel opened to traffic onThursday.It has taken four years to build thebridge, which is supported by morethan 5,000 pillars.According to Guinness World Records,the previous record holder for a bridgeover water is the Lake PontchartrainCauseway in Louisiana. The Chinese

    bridge is more than 2.5 miles (4kilometers) longer.

    The Lake Pontchartrain Causeway in Louisiana, which had the title until December 27

    of the last year, for its longest span, has now been dwarfed by three miles, by the

    new bridge that has a massive 26.4 miles spanfive miles more than the distance

    between Dover and Calais. Expressing in another way, the Qingdao Haiwan Bridge is

    174 times longer than the famous Londons Tower Bridge over the river Thames.
