Nga mihi nui kia koutou. Dear Parents, Caregivers and friends of the school. This week I attended a meeting with Bishop Peter on maintaining links between the Catholic Colleges and Primary Schools. If anyone has feedback on this issue or on how their children have transitioned into the colleges please ring or email with any positive or reflective feedback that I can share with the College Principals. It is pleasing to note that the New Plymouth Catholic Primary Schools have the highest transition to continuing Catholic Education in the Diocese. The weather has certainly been wintery in recent weeks. Well done to children who are prepared with coats and jacket and umbrellas; is your child prepared for inclement weather? The school has been focusing on greeting one another appropriately. We have been talking about making eye contact and responding to people who speak to us. We had fun in assembly role playing this last week. The children are also working hard at using their manners at all times. This week the Life Education truck will be here supporting our thematic unit ’ How can I Live a Healthy Life’? Hopefully the weather is on the improve this week, the fields are about as bad as I have seen them. GOD BLESS Mike Dowd. VISITSVISITSVISITSVISITS

The Life Education team are visiting St Joseph’s from 15th-23rd June with each classroom visiting the team twice. The Bright Buttons group will also visit the team.

The Middle School (Year 3&4) will look at “Heart Central”

The students are invited on Harold’s mystery train trip around the human body. We meet Charlie the conductor and the team from Heart Central Station as they guide us through the circulatory system. We visit the main circulatory system organs including; heart; lungs; arteries; veins; kidneys; muscles; brain. The main focus is to discover what the organs do and how they work, increasing an understanding of the human body. Imaginations and enthusiasm are the only things needed to be packed for this trip.

The Junior School (Year 1&2) will look at “All Together” (Note the change of topic)

Students discuss that we are all special and unique and need to look after ourselves and others. Harold asks us to look after his animal puppet friends, making sure they are happy and healthy through ensuring the basic needs are met (food, water, oxygen, shelter, exercise, washing, sleep, love and safety). We watch a short story which emphasises that everybody is special and needs to be looked after. Where possible the link is also made that we need to look after the environment and the animals that live in it with us, after all we all need the same basic needs.

The Senior School (Year 5&6) will look at “Body Journey”

This learning module explores the body and some of its systems including circulatory, nervous and respiratory but focussing on the digestive system. Students are introduced to Lenny Liver and learn about the important functions the liver undertakes. TAM discusses in depth the role of various body parts in the digestive system. Students undertake a food sorting exercise, looking closely at the labels on food packages and identifying the sugar, salt and fat content. The safe use of medicines is also explored to reinforce the varying jobs of the digestive system and the liver in metabolising drugs.

Heidelberg were lucky to be the

first classroom to visit the Life

Education truck.

BE PREPARED ON RAINY DAYS!

Wet days mean more traffic and less

visibility. Extra care and patience is needed when

driving… and parking. Use your lights, bring an

umbrella and be prepared to walk to pick up your

child. Better to catch a few raindrops than collect a

car. Park safe, and keep our children safe.

Become One Body One Spirit in Christ is a DVD filmed in churches and cathedrals in the USA, Ireland, England, Scotland, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and South Africa and with expert commentary from translators, academics, liturgical consultants and practitioners. This beautifully produced resource evokes biblical imagery which is foundational to these texts.
