Lighting trendsUsed selectively, artificial light accentuates thearchitecture and interior of a room. The rightlighting concepts are essential to living areas /practical spaces, such as kitchens andbathrooms, living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms, home offices, hallways and utilityrooms, as well as to hotel and shop conceptsthat aim to excite and delight.

Light is becoming an increasingly important criterion in designing furniture and spaces, particularly also in shopfitting where it has never been more important to create excitingspaces that appeal to the emotions.

This produces exciting prospects for architectureand furniture design.

Light makes our world visible, lightens our emotionsand provides meaning. It stimulates, relaxes andmotivates. This makes light much more than just a

ceiling lamp hanging from the centre of a room.It is much more a matter of balancing the interplayof adequate daylight and good illumination.

Time for relaxation

The bathroom is becoming a sanctuary, one of regeneration, refuge and relaxation. The world is shut out for a while.

Every day begins and ends in the bathroom. Good light is like the right choice of music. It pleasantly underscores the mood and can be composed to suit any preference – a littlebrighter for some, more subdued for others.

It's not the size of the bathroom that matters, but the choice of materials with colours and surfaces that create the perfect ambience withthe accomplished use of more or less light – to harmonise with mood and function.

Light is colour

The world is a colourful place. But it's only light that gives expressionto this tremendous wealth of colour. Light caresses colours, sets themaglow, plays with nuances, shadows and structures.

The colour medley is infinitely variable and can be adapted to suit the time and type of day. Colour determines mood and the sense ofwell-being, it projects the world in a different light.

Good light is not the same as bright light – good light is individually tailored light selectedand positioned to provide the best possiblesolution for the requirement, function and mood.

Respite from life's stresses

Hotel furnishings need to meet the most exacting of demands. Away from home, the hotel guest expects uncompromising comfort:practical storage space, a convenient desk towork at, easily accessible communication media and a bed that adjusts to the individual.

Lighting plays a central part and is becomingmore and more of a factor in professional interior and furniture design. Light defines rooms and underscores the way they arefurnished.

Light creates atmosphere, invigorates mood andcan give a living environment its own identity.

Selectively illuminated objects accentuate, make a statement and create emotion. And theseare powerful selling points that impress.

Of the world's electricity, 19% is currentlybeing used by lighting and/or artificial illumination. Low-energy lighting, such asLED lighting, is making it possible to significantly reduce this percentage. As well as this, low energy lighting hasthe potential to cut CO2 emissions by42,5 million tonnes annually.

Low energy LED lighting is energy efficientand as such, has the potential to make an important contribution to protecting our environment. LED lighting uses very little electricity, which means significantly lowerCO2 emissions. Using low energy lighting alternatives is a great way to save ecological resources. When used economically, ie., switchingthem off when not in use, the strain of

lighting on our environment is further reduced. As well as being a low energy light source, magic LED lights are also manufactured in anecologically friendly way and produce less environmental pollution when disposed ofthan other products. magic lights are produced from concept tocompletion with function and the environmentin mind. When selecting your lights, look out

for the symbol below, which represents the mostenergy-efficient products in the magic range:

Compared with a halogen lamp of the samelight output, the LED is not only distinguishedby significantly lower energy consumption, greater economic and luminous efficiency butalso by its exceptionally long service life.

Superior energy balance

Operating maintenance-free for 6 hours a day, 250 days a year, the useful life of a white LED is 33 years*. A halogen lamp, in contrast, needsreplacing after approximately 1,3 years.

40% of the energy used by an LED is convertedinto light and only 60% into heat. For halogen lamps, this ratio is around 10% to 90%.

* Depending on the type of LED, the ambient temperature and the quality of the power supply.

In addition to long useful life, the economicbenefits of LEDs are primarily the result of lowoperating and maintenance costs. Their compactdimensions, impact and vibration resistance, low heat build-up and high quality of light make them predestined for virtually all areasdemanding the use of innovative, energy andcost-efficient lighting technology.

Using 80% less energy than a halogen lamp and therefore far cheaper to operate, the LED'stremendous energy-saving potential is obvious.

Impressive efficiency – also in terms of economy

Accentuating, highlighting and creating emotion – these are the strengths with which LEDs have so far become established as a source oflight. The new, innovatively and comprehensivelyextended magic LED range for the first timeoffers numerous attractive lighting solutions which – depending on task and choice – not only provide accent, night and orientation light, but also function light for all lighting tasks inand on furniture. This really boosts the creativepotential in planning attractive lighting.

Halogen light impresses with its radiant brightnessand brilliance – light with the feel-good factor ofnatural light. Colours look as natural as they do on a bright day and surfaces take on a particularlyradiant sheen. Exciting lighting design with

halogen light falls in line with the trend towards creating a pleasantly lit, homely ambience.Low-voltage halogen lights operate on 12V ACvoltage and therefore require a transformer forconnecting them to the normal 230 - 240 Vmains power supply.

Multi-talents in light planning

Standardised plug connections, both in the mainsand low-voltage range, make installation easy.Integrating the wide range of different switchsystems, such as wireless, sensor or door-contactswitches, is not a problem either.

Needless to say, all magic halogen lights can also be dimmed – just as the mood takes you, from being as bright as day to relaxingly subdued.

Light tone / Basic lighting parameters

LightLight is electromagnetic radiation at wavelengths from 380 - 720 nm.If it's short-wave, i.e. below 380 nm, it's ultraviolet light.Long-wave light at a wavelength of > 720 nm is called infrared light (heat radiation).

Colour temperature / tone of lightColour temperature describes the colour of lightnaturally radiated from lamps, characterised by the colour temperature, measured in (Kelvin). The Kelvin temperature scale begins at absolute zero, -273° Celsius, the lowest temperature known to exist. When a "blackbody" is slowly heated, it graduallychanges from dark red to red, to orange, white and to pale blue. The higher the temperature, the whiter the colour of this blackbody becomes.A distinction must be drawn between warm-whiteand cold-white light. The light tone of a lamp only says something about the colour appearance of the light it gives but not about the colour-rendering quality of the light source.

Luminous fluxLuminous flux describes the luminous efficiency of a light source and is expressed in lumen (Lm).

Luminous intensityLight intensity (illuminance) is probably the term most frequently used in lighting and defines the incidence of luminous flux on a defined surface, measured in lux (Lx).Lux = lumen/m2

Light distribution diagramsThe light distribution diagrams shown in the catalogue help to choose the right light.

The graphs demonstrate:light intensity in relation to distance from lightarea over which light is distributedradiation angle (half peak angle)

The lux values shown were measured in a black room.Luminous intensity guide values (DIN 5035, Part 2)

Energy-efficientLabelling of particularly energy-efficient LED lights

C-TickC-Tick is a compliance mark for items that must comply with the EMC (ElectroMagnetic Compatibility) regulatory arrangements of Australia and New Zealand.

ENECEuropean test mark: Confirmation by national certification bodies that electrical products comply with standards. The following 20 European states accept the ENEC Agreement:

VDE-GS markGerman test mark for appliances as technical work devices within the meaning of equipment safety law (Gerätesicherheitsgesetz - GSG)

EMVTest mark from VDE confirming compliance with the law on electromagnetic compatibility

CE – The CE label, for example, indicates confirmation by the manufacturer orimporter that a product complies with the Low-Voltage Directive and EMCDirective of the European Community.F markLights suitable for direct mounting on or against normal inflammable surfacescarry the F mark. Normally inflammable under DIN 4102 means that the materialstarts to burn at 200°C.

MM markLights and transformers suitable for installing in or on furniture which are made from materials with unknown flammability properties

Temperature-protected electronic transformerTransformer with temperature protection. The value in the triangle shows the max. housing temperature in the event of a defect.

Short-circuit-proof safety transformer

Independent electronic transformerFor use outside lights without additional cover

Maximum permissible ambient temperatureThis is the temperature level up to which no components are thermally overloaded.

Temperature reference pointDenotes the temperature reference point on the housing surface which, if exceeded, reduces useful life.

Safety extra-low voltage

Safety class 1 – Devices with earth conductor connectionEquipment in which protection against electrical shock does not only rely on basic insulation. An additional measure of protection is given by connecting those conductivecomponents to the protective earth conductor in the building wiring that are otherwisecapable of assuming hazardous voltages if the basic insulation fails.

Safety class 2 – Devices without earth conductor connectionEquipment in which protection against electrical shock does not rely on basic insulation only but in which additional safety precautions, such as double insulation or reinforced insulation, are provided. There is no facility for connection to protective earth conductors.

Safety class 3 – Devices using safety extra-low voltagesEquipment in which protection against electric shock is based on the use of safety extra-low voltage and in which no voltage higher than the safety extra-low voltage is produced.

Low-pressure systemHalogen lamps may be operated in an open fixture without a glass cover.

UV StopUV radiation falls distinctly below the most stringent limit values for UV protection(NIOSH). Reduction of UV bleaching effect by up to 80%.

Distance to illuminated surfaceThe distance to the illuminated surface stated on the lights must always be observed as the minimum distance.

Protection against foreign objects / WaterProtection against medium-sized foreign objects / no protection against waterProtection against medium-sized foreign objects / protection against dripping waterProtection against granular foreign objects / no protection against waterProtection against granular foreign objects / protection against splashing water from all directionsNo ingress of dust / protection against water jets
