CULTURAL GRADUATION AND RECOGNITION CEREMONY The Center for Leadership & Social Change in partnership the Center for Academic Retention & Enhancement, the Black Alumni Association and the Student Government Association host an evening of recognition for graduating seniors and their families. We come together to recognize our Seminole culture, celebrate the accomplishment of our graduates and honor the contributions of family and loved ones. The evening is truly a celebration of our shared identity, culture and values throughout the Florida State University campus! Register online at: http://thecenter.fsu.edu/Scholarships- and-Recognition/Cultural-Graduation-and-Recognition-Ceremony. Registration for the event will be closing April 19th at 5pm. This student takes “a moment to give thanks and respect those who are in their lives” for helping them achieve their goals; Bear (Service Award)- Awarded to a student who uses “self-reflection” and through this behavior finds “rebirth and self-understanding”. This student has an “enormous heart and a penchant for generosity” in helping underserved populations who are in need; and Fox (Diversity Award)- Awarded to a student who takes stock in the "treasure found in our family ties and gives thanks for our family”, the FSU community. “In calmly observing the student’s own behavior and that of their ‘family’ members, the student can also begin understanding” how cultural awareness increases development. CANOPY OAKS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL SPRING CARNIVAL Canopy Oaks Elementary School will be holding its annual Spring Carnival Friday, May 3rd and they are in need of volunteers. The carnival will run from 5:30pm to 8:30pm, with volunteers needed for set-up beginning at 4:30pm; staffing games, food and drink booths, and ticket booths from 5:30pm to 8:30pm; and clean-up from 8:30pm to 9:30pm. This event is a fun and easy way to earn community service hours! All volunteers must have a 2012-2013 Leon County School Volunteer Application on file by May 2nd and a valid ID in hand on the day of the event. KIDSFEST VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Kids Incorporated of the Big Bend is busy planning their 11th Annual Kidsfest, taking place at the North Florida Fairgrounds on Saturday may 4th, from 9:30am-2:30pm, rain or shine. Kidsfest is an annual community event that benefits Kids Incorporated, a local nonprofit that serves families with children from birth to 3 years of age and pregnant women. The staff of Kids Incorporated would love to have you participate in this fun-filled community event! It will be an exciting day that will include pony rides, moonwalks, crafts, games, delicious food and continuous live entertainment. They are also in need of volunteers, to handle admissions, kids’ activities, refreshment vending and general organization for the event. WOODVILLLE EMELMENTARY Woodville Elementary will be having our community carnival on May 4th and we need volunteers! It will be from 10:00 am until 2:00 p.m. The volunteers would be running the games, selling tickets and possibly even grilling hot dogs. It will be lots of fun! It would be great if they had a volunteer application on file. If not we can process them through our RAPTOR system. Please bring your ID’s! COUNTY MASTER GARDENER PROGRAM The public is cordially invited to attend a Spring Open House at the Leon County Extension Office, located at 615 Paul Russell Road, about a quarter mile east of the fair grounds. The event will be held Saturday, May 11th from 9:00 AM till 1:00 PM and it is FREE. Three guided tours will meander through all six of the demonstration gardens covering about one acre. In addition to the Master Gardener Program, extension office departments which include Urban Forestry/Trees & their Benefits and Environment/ Sustainable Living, will have educational booths or exhibits. Educational booths will also cover Herbs, Roses, Container Gardening, , Bee Keeping, Vegetable Gardens, Floral Designs from Garden Plants, Wildlife Displays, Micro-Irrigation, Greenhouse Demonstration, Plants that attract Butterflies and more. Plant Sales -- plants donated by Leon County Master Gardeners will be on sale at reasonable prices. Money from these sales will help pay expenses for sending their Leon County Master Gardener Plant ID Team to state competition. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR CULTURAL DINNER The Center for Global Engagement at FSU is hosting a Portuguese Dinner as part of our Taste Your World Series. The Taste Your World Series provides campus and community members with the opportunity to experience the varied cultures of our international student population through special evenings filled with cuisine, music and conversation. The Dinner Series also serves as a fundraiser to raise money that goes back to support intercultural programming. We are seeking volunteers to help us make this dinner possible! We are asking volunteers to help from 2pm-10pm on May 16th. Tasks will include: setting up, serving, greeting, cleaning, cooking, others tasks as needed. Not only will you be able to use this experience for your servscript or hospitality school volunteer hours, but you will also be provided with a free dinner! This is also a great opportunity to learn about food and wine from another culture. We are looking for 5 volunteers, so please sign up as soon as possible. ESOL TUTOR TRAINING WORKSHOP If you would like to help newcomers develop their English skills, become a member of a great organization, meet people from around the world, and learn new skills from an accredited nonprofit educational organization, then this is the workshop for you. You do not need to know any other language other than English to be a tutor. Training will be on Tuesday, April 30th & Tuesday, May 7th from 6:00-8:30 p.m. It will be held in the Literacy Classroom on the 3rd floor of the Collins Main Library at 200 W. Park Avenue. NONPROFIT INTERNSHIP PROGRAM Do you want to make a lasting contribution to a local nonprofit while earning 6 or 12 elective credits? The Center for Leadership and Social Change is now accepting applications for the Fall 2013 Nonprofit Internship Program, through April 22nd. T his competitive program is designed to give students the opportunity to work half-time or full- time in the community and develop professional skills while earning credit. Previous interns have worked in: child development, juvenile justice, health services, homelessness, hunger, environment, government and more. INTERNATIONAL STUDENT EXCHANGE REPRESENTATIVE International Student Exchange is currently seeking area representatives for International Students. ISE has been successfully placing international students with host families for 30 years. Local Area Representative responsibilities include; Locating schools and requesting openings for international exchange students and building relationships with school officials, recruiting American host families to host an exchange student for an academic semester or school year, screening host families for interest in hosting international students providing orientations and group outings for international students and host families be a liaison to help support the host families and international students, and local schools throughout the student's stay in the U.S. Must be at least 25 years of age. ISE offers a competitive stipend with bonuses, including international travel opportunities. This is a part-time, home-based, so you decide the amount of time you would like to put into it as an independent contractor. You will be given complete training to be able to do this position. Weekly meetings (in-person or by phone) with Florida TaxWatch Communications Coordinator with an update on progress and future tasks will be expected. 2) DPA 2013 magazine Responsibilities include providing assistance to the Florida TaxWatch Communications Coordinator designing, laying out, and editing the 2013 Pru – DPA magazine. Ideally, this individual would be proficient in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign in particular). This position is from March – May 2013, Part-time, flexible schedule, working 12-15 hours per week, on-site or remote. Weekly meetings (in-person or by phone) with Florida TaxWatch Communications Coordinator and Pru – DPA Executive Director with an update on progress and future tasks will be expected. 3) Membership & Event Intern Duties and responsibilities for this internship include: Membership database management, keeping records up-to-date, entering survey information into records, researching relationships between members, researching potential members, research bounced emails, etc.; Membership mailings: assist with mailing member invoices, event invitations, surveys, etc.; Member event planning: assist with scheduling meetings for executives when they travel, printing materials, packing materials and research reports, research potential speakers, etc.; Assist Director of Membership in other areas if needed.
