Cambria-Friesland School District Earns a Bronze Medal by U.S. News and World Report

Congratulations Hilltoppers!

This spring the U.S. News & World Report released it’s Best High School rankings featuring top-performing schools at the state and national levels. The Cambria-Friesland Middle and High School earned a Bronze medal for student

achievement and postsecondary preparation. U.S. News & World Reports annually recognizes high achieving school districts around the nation. Of the

468 schools districts from the state of Wisconsin, only 164 schools were awarded a Gold, Silver, or Bronze Medal. All of us should be proud of this

achievement as it reflects a collective effort by everyone to provide the best education for the children of the Cambria-Friesland communities. I realize the Cambria-Friesland School District has it’s challenges and plenty more work to

do as we move into next year and beyond. To ensure our students are as prepared for life beyond K-12 school as their counterparts around the state of

Wisconsin and nation, a goal and focus of our district has been to examine and assess the rigor and expectations in our classrooms. Next year Cambria-

Friesland High School will offer four Advanced Placement courses. Advanced Placement (AP) courses allow students an opportunity to take college level

classes with the potential to earn college credits. It’s these types of continuous advancements that will propel our school forward and prepare students for

postsecondary success. Finally, I fully understand that we’re a small district and can’t offer a number of things other larger schools may be able to provide for students. But it’s in that “smallness” we find the things larger schools may not be able to provide their students. Smaller class sizes, a more intimate and

deeper relationship between student, parent and teacher are just a few examples of the advantages a student attending a small district has when

compared to children attending larger schools. This year Cambria-Friesland High School graduated twenty-six seniors. Some might see that as a

disadvantage. But compared to high schools with graduating classes of two, three, four hundred students, a fair statement would be each has it’s own advantages and disadvantages and both can serve their students need if determined to do so. As shared, I’m very proud of our school district, its

students, staff, parents, and greater communities that comprise our district. Awards such as the one recognized here happens only because of a

collective effort by all of us.

E-Funds at Cambria-Friesland

The Cambria-Friesland School District has proudly partnered with e~Funds for Schools to make paying for school lunch easier for you. This program offers options for parents/guardians who choose to make payments online and is extremely user friendly. You have the ability to have lunch payments electronically withdrawn from your checking account or charged to your credit card. You also have the flexibility to make a payment at any time through the school’s website. The e~Funds for Schools service is offered to you by a third party service provider and they charge for processing your payment(s), similar to other online banking services. The district does not request or keep records of family checking or credit card account information. The e~Funds for Schools electronic payment service is provided to the school by a third party service provider. The service provider has a nominal fee for their service. There is a $1.00 transaction convenience fee for each electronic checking payment that you make. The system carries a Non-Sufficient Funds (NSF) charge if the payment is “bad.” For payments made by credit or debit card, there is a convenience fee of $2.65 per each $100 increment in the transaction. When you set up your account, please review your options carefully. You are in full control of your account and can make a payment at any time that is convenient for you. No payments will be allowed without your knowledge and authorization through this secure payment system. By providing your home and/or work e-mail address, an e-mail notification informing you of the student’s name, purpose of the payment, and the amount of the item, will be sent to you each time that a payment is to be processed. The e~Funds for Schools site is secure and uses industry standard data encryption. How does e~Funds for Schools work?

Families set up and maintain their own logins, passwords, and payment preferences. Your account information is retained in a password-protected file.

e~Funds for Schools will help to eliminate last minute check writing hassles, improve efficiencies, and help cut costs for both you and the school district

Online payments will help eliminate the worry that your children could lose or forget the money intended for school lunch.

Payments from a credit card or checking account may easily be set up. Parents/guardians may establish a recurring payment or may opt to make a one-time

payment. Your payment history for the year is available with a click of the mouse. Simply go to the Cambria-Friesland School District website hover over “Lunch

Program” and then select “Lunch Account” to get started.

Americanism Essay

Veterans

Once I witnessed a veteran ask a restaurant cashier if there was a veteran discount. The veteran

was in uniform and was being polite. However, the lady behind him started yelling at the man, and

accused him of “using the system.” She very loudly told him how veterans should not get the extra

benefits that they do. She even said she would not eat at this place if they gave him a discount. This

made me very disappointed. Another lady responded by giving the man cash to pay for his meal. The

restaurant owner stepped in and said that his meal would be free. That may not be exactly what

Lincoln meant when he gave his Second Inaugural Address, but that’s one of the ways that we can

keep his promise. As Americans, we must continue to fight for the well being and respect of our

nation’s veterans and their families.

One way that we as Americans can fight for our veteran’s respect is by simply taking the time

to stop and thank them often. I don’t think anybody who has not been in war can even begin to

imagine the courage and bravery it takes to do what a soldier has to do. They go through so much, and

it is mainly for others. They are fighting for all of us as a nation and definitely deserve

credit. Veterans often come home with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). These soldiers are so

on edge and used to having to protect themselves so much that they can barely function in normal

life. They are suspicious of everyone and are terrified of every gun-like noise. They serve willingly

making themselves prone to this, and we should thank them as often as we can. The happiness and

appreciation felt by a veteran knowing that what they did made others’ lives better is worth so much.

Another thing we can do to help our veterans is keeping them off of the streets. I don’t think it

is right at all that somebody who fought for our freedom should be fighting to survive on the

streets. Citizens can volunteer to build houses for veterans, or somebody could simply offer an extra

room for a veteran in their house. I think it would be a good idea if we could build apartment buildings

to house broke soldiers and veterans until they can get back on their own feet. Especially, the injured

and disabled.

In conclusion, we should always be grateful and giving to veterans and soldiers. They fought

for us and we should never accuse them of taking advantage of the system. A veteran at a restaurant

was yelled at by a lady. That veteran was then protected by other bystanders. Be the bystander that

helps. As Americans, we must continue to fight for the well being and respect of our nation’s veterans

and their families.

Google Sites

The 8th students learned how to create websites in class this year using “Google Sites”. Their handy work can be seen on the school’s website (http://www.cf.k12.wi.us). To view some of the sites created by these students, click on athletic/school events on the left hand side of the district home page, and from there go to CF Sports and Extracurricular Activities. Also, websites were created for the custodial staff, kitchen staff, and teacher aides, these can be found under District Staff.
