OldesteverIdoldiscoveredsofaristheLionManivoryscultpure,whichisestimatedtobe40000yearsold.ItwasdiscoveredintheHohlensteinStadel,aGermancavein1939.This29.6cm(11.7inches)inheight,5.6cmwide,and5.9cmthicksculpturewascarvedoutofwoollymammothivoryusingaflintstoneknife.Mostofitspieceswerefoundin1939butitwasforgottenformanyyearsasheadwasnotfoundandalsoduetoWorldWarII.Between1997and1998,additionalpiecesofthesculpturewerediscoveredandtheheadwasreassembledandrestored.Thereisadebateaboutitsname,genderetcasnotenoughhistoricevidenceofsuchbeingexistinGermanyorEurope.
Infact,itisidolofLordNarasimha(LionfacedHuman),whichisregardedas4thavatarofLordVishnu.CarvingidolsfromElephantTuskwascommoninIndiaandAsianElephantistheclosestextantrelativeofWoollyMammoth.ThenamecurrentlyusedinGermanis,Lwenmenschmeaninglionhuman.
