OLN Connect November 2021

School Mission

A CHIJ School is a Christ-centered school community where

all work together for the promotion of

truth, justice, freedom and love, with special reference to the

needs of students who are disadvantaged in any way.

School Vision

Girls of Today for Tomorrow

400th Anniversary of the Birth of our Founder: Blessed Nicolas Barre

As part of the 400th Anniversary Celebrations of the Birth of our Founder: Blessed Nicolas Barre, we published the “IJ Voices”, a compilation of messages from all IJ

schools as well as IJHCC, CHIJ Board of Management and the IJ nuns. Each family would have received a copy. We hope you enjoyed

reading it as much as we enjoyed putting it together. You may also access the e-copy of IJ Voices here.

All IJ girls also received a Founder’s Day souvenir, a folder designed by CHIJ Katong Convent.

Although the celebrations has been downsized because of the Covid-19 situation, we are glad that through online celebrations and classroom activities, we were still able to celebrate Father Barre’s 400th Anniversary as a community.

Best Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is here, so our minds have turned

To what time has taught us, to what we've learned:

We often focus all our thought On shiny things we've shopped

and bought. We take our pleasure

in material things, Forgetting the pleasure that

friendship brings. If a lot of our stuff

just vanished today, We'd see the foundation of

each happy day Is special relationships,

constant and true, And that's when our thoughts

go directly to you. We wish you a Thanksgiving

you'll never forget, Full of love and joy— your best one yet!

What is happening in Term 4

GRACIA! Celebrations Prize Presentation and P6 Graduation Programme

The annual prize presentation and the P6 Graduation Programme will be held on Friday, 19 November 2021. The prize presentation has been named GRACIA! Celebrations to celebrate what we truly value – the character of our girls. Whatever the award, be it an academic, sports, aesthetics or character award, what we truly value is what underpins the achievement – the GRACIA values learnt. To ensure the safety of everyone, the ceremony will be broadcast to all students in their respective classrooms. P6s will receive their prizes in the hall while P1 to P5 students will receive their awards in their classrooms.

All students are to report to school at 7.30am and they will be dismissed at 10.30am. All students are expected to be in school as this is a school day. The school bus service will be operating for students registered with them. The pick-up time in the morning will be as per normal, and the buses will send the students home at the end of the event at 10.30am. For students not taking the school bus, parents are requested to make the necessary transport arrangements for them.

We invite parents to watch the P6 prize presentation and graduation programme over Zoom. More details will be disseminated later.

Primary School Transfer Service (1 Nov 2021, 9am to 25 Nov 2021, 4pm)

The aim of the Primary School Transfer Service is to centrally facilitate the transfer of primary school students who are Singapore Citizens (SC) or Permanent Residents (SPR) and have relocated to another address, to schools nearer to their new residences. If you are seeking a school transfer due to a change of address, you can submit your application using Singpass via the MOE website here .

Construction work at Side Gate 2

To address the crowded situation outside Side Gate 2 during dismissal, the Aljunied-Hougang Town Council will be constructing a larger ‘wait area’ for parents and care-givers. With this larger ‘wait area’, it is hoped that the path leading to the bus stop and residential blocks will not be blocked but remain accessible to members of the public including residents. A notification has been put up at Side Gate 2. Please note that the construction work is scheduled as follows:

Date Scheduled Work

4/11 (Thu) Hoarding work

5/11(Thu) - 11/11 (Thu) Hacking work (after 3pm during weekdays)

12/11(Fri) – 14/11 (Sun) Concreting and Screeding work (Non-noisy work)

*The work schedule is subject to weather condition and any other circumstances.

Please remind your child to be careful as they exit / enter the school via Side Gate 2 during this period of construction. We will also be reminding our students of this.

We seek your understanding as to the inconvenience caused during this period of time, and ask that you help minimise overcrowding and inconvenience to members of the public and residents while waiting for your child.

Preparing for 2022 Class Allocation

All P1, P3 and P5 students will promoted to the P2, P4 and P6 levels respectively. They will stay with their own classes and their classmates in 2022. P2 and P4 students will be informed on Wednesday 17 Nov 2021 of their P3 and P5 classes. Do note that the allocation to P3 / P5 classes is NOT based on class results. Instead it is based on ensuring that the girls build social skills, get to mix with other girls in the level and by doing so, have a wider circle of friends.

2022 P4 and P6 Science Textbooks and Workbooks

If your child is in P4 or P6 next year, they will continue to use the current Science textbooks and workbooks. Please keep them for use in 2022.

Financial Assistance Schemes (FAS) 2022

If you wish to apply for FAS 2022, please download the application form from https://www.moe.gov.sg/fees-assistance-awards-scholarships/financial-assistance/. You can submit the completed form and required supporting documents via email to [email protected] by Monday, 8 November 2021. Please include “FAS” in the subject of the email. Alternatively your child can obtain the application form from the General Office.

Gentle Reminders

Congestion at the Overhead Bridge Staircase

We have received feedback from the residents on care-givers and some of our students sitting on the steps of the overhead bridge staircase during dismissal time, particularly on rainy days. This has led to the obstruction of the passageway and this has caused inconvenience to members of the public who are trying to access the overhead bridge. We seek your cooperation in keeping a clear passageway for members of the public to access the overhead bridge by not sitting on the steps of the staircase. Do help us to convey the message to your child’s caregivers e.g. grandparents, helpers if they are the ones picking up your child.

Traffic Conditions: Multi-storey and Open-Air Carpark Outside Side Gate 2

We have received feedback from residents that there have been occasions of illegal parking and that their cars have been blocked and prevented from leaving the open-air carpark and the multi-storey carpark beside the school.

Please park your car in the official lots provided in the open-air or the multi-storey carparks instead of parking them in washing bays, handicapped lots or waiting alongside the road. This will ease the traffic flow and be much appreciated by other parents and residents.

Page 9: 400 Anniversary of the Birth of our Founder: Blessed

OLN Connect

Page 9

We also seek your cooperation to turn off your car engine while waiting for your child as the fumes emitted may in turn affect the health of other parents/guardians and pupils who are near the area. Under the Environmental Protection and Management (Vehicular Emissions) Regulations, it is an offence for the driver of a motor vehicle to leave the engine of a vehicle idling while the vehicle is stationary.

The car parks adjoining the school are small and access in / out is limited. Our girls are blessed that they can be dropped off/ picked up by parents. In turn, let us also role model how to be a blessing to others.
