An avalanche of growth quickly followed with 33 businesses joining in the first month, the certificate of incorporation was certified in December and the first paid employee, Odette May, was hired beginning on January 1st of 1977. In the following six years, the Chamber developed a solid foundation on which it still stands today. Membership surpassed the 100 business milestone in less than 15 months, the first publication was produced in 1977 and several events were established including the Bethany Beach Arts Festival in 1979. Moreover the work of the Chamber was being done by dedicated members and staff, working out of their homes and businesses. Additional milestones came in November of 1982; the Chamber secured office space renting in a Superior Homes model, and Kay Anderson was hired as the full-time executive director. In the mid-1980s, a group of resourceful business men and women were determined to find a permanent home for the organization. After many letters and meetings navigating the bureaucratic process, a parcel of land was negotiated exclusively for the Chamber on the Fenwick Island State Park grounds. There were a few stipulations as part of the agreement including no taxpayer money could be used on the project and an Information Center would also be included to distribute literature from various Delaware agencies. However, the terms of the lease will go down as the one best in the Quiet Resorts…especially for oceanfront property. Once the lease was signed by Governor Mike Castle, the raising of the building soon followed. First, a $50,000 bond was personally guaranteed by a steadfast contingent of members: William O. Murray, Joseph Tansey, Sally Hickman, Wilbert Powell, Jr, Harold E. Dukes, Jr., Barbara Porter and Frank Raskauskas who also spearheaded the construction. Then, the donations began rolling in whether in the form a financial contributions, floor coverings, building supplies or manual labor. In 1986, construction on the current building was completed, and the structure was renovated in 2005, again, by the financial support of the membership. Simply, the Chamber is about people, about commerce, about collaboration and most importantly, community. Forty years ago, the work to build the organization started through conversations of a small group of business owners. Today, over 700 members continue these conversations to build business and sustain a thriving environment. A FORTY YEAR HISTORY BUILT BY PEOPLE, FOR BUSINESS

On February 23rd, 1976, Clayton L. Ringer, president of the Baltimore Trust Company, called the first board meeting of the Bethany Beach – Fenwick Island Area Chamber of Commerce. An avalanche of growth quickly followed with 33 businesses joining in the first month, the certificate of incorporation was certified in December and the first paid employee, Odette May, was hired beginning on January 1st of 1977. MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: BISHOP-HASTINGS FUNERAL HOME

How many local businesses can say they’ve been around for 110 years? Well, Bishop-Hastings Funeral Home can; it was established at its current location in Selbyville in 1896. Yes, 1896. Paynter F. Watson opened the undertaking business and carriage and harness shop, and it was called “P.F. Watson, Undertaker and Embalmer, Dealer in Carriages, Harness, Robes, Blankets, Hardware, Etc.” Over the years it has changed ownership (and the name has certainly been shortened), and currently W. Bryan and Amy Bishop are at the helm. Bryan began working at the funeral home in 1994, when it was named Hastings Funeral Home. In 2014 he retired from the Town of Ocean City after 27 years as a career paramedic/firefighter. He and Amy purchased the business in 2014, and in 2015 renamed it Bishop-Hastings. A lot has changed in 110 years when the funeral home offered basic services such as embalming in the deceased’s home, hand built wooden coffins and a horse-drawn hearse. As an aside, that hearse can still be seen today in Selbyville parades. Today, Bishop-Hastings offers a full line of services to fit every need. Continuing the tradition of compassionate care, Bryan and his staff can be relied upon to offer comfort during the difficult time of losing a loved one. Chamber members since 2003, Bryan and Amy can be spotted at various networking events. We look forward to celebrating another 110 years of business with Bishop-Hastings in 2126!

AROUND THE QUIET RESORTSDEBBIE BOTCHIE, TOWN MANAGER OF THE YEAR

For perhaps the first time, Debbie Botchie was speech-less at a Millville Town Council meeting. But she had just been named Delaware’s Town Manager of the Year for 2016. That’s a high honor among the 57 mu-nicipalities and three counties included in Delaware League of Local Governments. Botchie was simply stunned at the Sept. 13 announcement. “Oh, thank you all so much. I’m speechless,” Botchie said. “I love my job,” she said the next morning. “I love this challenge. … I always said when I started working here, ‘Just look at everything as baby steps.’” Over the years, she’s helped start the town’s farmers’ mar-ket, holiday market, the Great Pumpkin Festival, new municipal/police partnership building, town park, fire company grant money and more. “The Town of Mill-ville’s slogan is ‘A beautiful way of life.’ This slogan is continuously proven valid, largely due to Ms. Botch-ie’s tireless dedication and contributions to the town, as well as the community in which she was born and raised,” Gordon wrote in his nomination. “Her skills proved to be exactly what the Town of Millville needs and continues to need.” So, after all these years, what’s her proudest moment? “Everything we’ve done and accomplished sticks out to me. It’s not one thing at all,” she said. “In my opinion, it all goes into one pot for the betterment of the community and property owners.” For the complete story visit the coastalpoint.com.

VFW POST 7234 DONATES TO DELAWARE HOSPICE

The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Mason Dixon Post 7234 donated just over $2,100 to Delaware Hospice through their monthly dinner in September. Through the hard work and dedication of the members of the VFW, they were able to raise money and more impor-tantly awareness for Delaware Hospice. The event featured some amazing food and desserts with great music and dancing! “We welcome the opportunity to work with organizations like the VFW to promote hospice care in Delaware,” commented Peggy Dolby, assistant director of development. “With their contin-ual support, we are able to continue to provide care, services, and education to more than 10,000 people each year.” Since 1982, Delaware Hospice has pro-vided the highest quality hospice and healthcare services, and serves as a trusted community partner in end-of-life education and support. Delaware Hospice provides advanced illness management through its programs and services Transitions, Delaware Pallia-tive, Delaware Hospice, Delaware Hospice Center, Katybug Pediatric Program, Bereavement, and New Hope. Accredited by the Joint Commission, Delaware Hospice continues to be the largest and only licensed, nonprofit, community-based hospice serving Dela-ware. For more information about Delaware Hospice’s programs and services, upcoming events, or employ-ment opportunities, call 800-838-9800 or visit the web-site, delawarehospice.org.
