40 th APPALACHIAN STUDIES ASSOCIATION CONFERENCE: PUBLIC EVENTS, March 9-12, 2017 Montgomery County will be filled with free and engaging events celebrating Appalachia’s cultures and traditions in conjunction with the Appalachian Studies Association Conference organized under the theme of “Extreme Appalachia!”. Foregrounded in the fiber exhibits are local crafts persons and artists. The Fiber Arts exhibits feature textile art, ranging from quilts to installations to silk paintings, celebrating the work of textile artists and award-winning quilters from across the New River Valley and surrounding areas. The Beyond Coal Photography Exhibits feature the work of three photographers, Roger May, Romanian Gabriel Amza and Austin Irving, who capture the changing relationship between the region and its people. The photography exhibits will be on display beginning Monday, February 27, and will be open through the end of the conference on Sunday, March 12. The Extreme Appalachia! Documentary Film Series will take place at the Lyric Theater and explore Appalachia’s altered landscape and the effects its had on its residents. The #HandsOn exhibits focus on a wide range of traditions, including chairmaking, beekeeping, quilting, wood turning, tattooing, ceramic making, crocheting, homebrewing and poultry butchering. Conference registration is not required; all are welcome! Montgomery County will be filled with free and engaging events celebrating Appalachia’s cultures and traditions in conjunction with the Appalachian Studies Association Conference organized under the theme of “Extreme Appalachia!”. Foregrounded in the fiber exhibits are local crafts persons and artists.
