M.A. (Mich) Dr. Karl Rensch of the Department of Phonetics, University of Cologne, West Germany, lectured to students of General Linguistics 1 and B during the academic year. 3. Appointments: Dr. K. Rensch, who visited the department during the academic year, was appointed lecturer in general linguistics. He will take up his position in March 1969. 4. Enrolments: The total number of enrolments was - Linguistics Seminar 93 students (course cancelled after first term), Gen. Ling. I 53 (14 cancellations and withdrawals), Gen. Ling. B 11 (4 for honours), Gen. Ling. IV 1 student, 2 students are enrolled for the degree of Master of Arts and 1 for the Ph.D. 5. Examination Results Examination enrolments in Gen. Ling. 1 were 39 students (4 failures), Gen. Ling. B. 11 (no failures), Gen. Ling. IV l {no failure). The students' progress can be regarded as very satisfactory. 6. Curriculum In 1968 the classes General Linguistics II and III were united and renamed General Linguistics B. There was no appreciable difference in performance between second and third year students and the courses General Linguistics A and B will in the future be offered in alternate years.

Dr. Karl Rensch of the Department of Phonetics, University

of Cologne, West Germany, lectured to students of General

Linguistics 1 and B during the academic year.

3. Appointments:

Dr. K. Rensch, who visited the department during the

academic year, was appointed lecturer in general linguistics.

He will take up his position in March 1969.

In 1968 the classes General Linguistics II and III were

7. Research Work

Mr. Harris furthered his work on the historical

development of English.

42/1969,

Dr. Rensch worked on Italian dialects and on the history

of linguistics.

Dr. Bluhme prepared an article on the phonological system

of the Roro language, Supported by a grant from the Australian

Research Grants Committee he investigated problems of speech

rhytgm in Dutch and worked on the grammatical structure of the

same language.
