Kumu Haku’s Creed (Code of Ethics)To universally fulfill the promise of the Divine Spirit, bringing comfort and healing to a unified body,

and meeting such a need in transition.

To have greater understanding and to learn simple compassion for my own effectiveness while serving humanity and each individual, as a clear channel; a pure one, an instrument, a vessel, which pours forth from a Divine Source; whose greater power is absent of

personal agenda, without blocks, without need, without ego and without difference.

This omnipresent “oneness” is of love, mercy and tenderness. Thus, when I am in service, I am transformed into that greater light, and that light becomes a beacon of hope, a shelter for comfort and a lover of peace.

The decomposing leaves dropped last autumn transform into new shoots budding in the spring. The atoms comprising the lunch you had yesterday find new purpose as the molecular components of your cells and tissues today. Everywhere, the inert molecules transformed into bodies of living entities undergo perpetual revival.

Our senses may perceive the world as material, but underlying the disguise of matter lies a vast, mysterious realm of energy and information undergoing constant transformation. Each new living being is an expression of nature’s unwavering commitment to revival.

Change is the essential feature of life and harnessing the force of change is the challenge of all living systems. When channeled, this energy stream is the vital force that governs the flow of evolution and revival. Obstruction of this vital force leads to imbalance, illness, and ultimately death.

We often see people at the Chopra Center who are out of sync with the flow of vital energy and have lost their ability to tap into the wellspring of rejuvenation. As a by-product of our technological mastery we fall out of step with the ancient timeless pulse of the cosmos and pay the price in terms of distress and fatigue. Fortunately, we only have to listen for, and tune into, the timeless cosmic beat and we can recapture our vitality— revitalizing body, mind, and soul.

In the ancient Vedic tradition, spirit operates in the world through beginnings, endings, and new beginnings. A rose bud dies as the flower blooms. The caterpillar surrenders its individuality as it rebirths as a butterfly. A life dedicated to revival is aligned with the fountainhead of creation where chaos gives birth to order.

Chaos and birth are part of an eternal dance that gives rise to growth, creativity, and vitality. Witnessing all that begins and ends—whether in our environment or our bodies—leaves us with a sense of wonder, hope, and unending creativity and amazement. This connection to source is experienced as amazement and love.

Amazement dawns as your judging mind surrenders its need to control and recognizes the interconnectedness of all things. Physicists identify interrelatedness as a core tenet of quantum reality. Your mind can tap into this fundamental principle of

life through synchronicity – the recognition of meaningful coincidence. When you stay awake to everyday surprises, you get a glimpse into the interwoven nature of life. For example, the name of a person you haven’t thought of in a long time crosses your mind and in that next moment you receive a call from them on your cell phone. Or, you are thinking about buying the latest novel of your favorite author as you stop off at a coffee shop, only to discover that someone discarded the book at a table. Paying attention to synchronicities creates opportunities to glimpse the mystery of the interrelatedness of life.

The human body is a perpetual expression of synchronicity as each cell performs its unique task in harmony with every other cell. Your body is capable of regulating blood pressure, maintaining body temperature, digesting your breakfast, fighting off an infection, eliminating toxins, making a baby, and tracking the rotation of the earth all at the same time.

This amazing synchrony is choreographed at a non-local dimension of life that manifests in the objective world in the form of thoughts, feelings, memories, and dreams. Spiritual traditions call this realm of life the universal soul. When we learn to live from the level of the soul, many things happen. We become more aware of the patterns and rhythms that govern our lives. We gain insight into the experiences that mold us into the people we are today. We gain access to the creative power that is at the heart of nature. Fearfulness and anxiety fall away as we stand in amazement of the world as it unfolds around us.

Tap into this unbounded, intensely creative realm at Journey into Healing at Lake San Marcos in California, June 7-10 and Secrets of Enlightenment

at Chopra Center (Carlsbad, CA) June 20-23. For more information, visit chopra.com

The amount of money being spent on research by pharmaceutical companies, government institutions and health foundations is quite awesome. Globally, it probably runs into billions of dollars.

Certainly, there is a need for new ways to combat not only the diseases that continue to plague the human race, but also the ‘smart’ viruses that have learned to mutate in order to survive and spread.

Yet the area with possibly the greatest potential – one that could change the whole face of medical science - is largely being ignored. That is what healers call the Human Energy Field, more popularly known as the aura or subtle body.

I admit I’m biased. Teaching others how to heal through the HEF has been my passion for the past 25 years. So to me, it all looks quite simple. The HEF is made up of several levels or frequencies, each one containing masses of information.

The great attribute of the energy field, from a health care perspective, is that it is possible to detect diseases long before they manifest in the physical body. Potential diseases show up as distortions in the field and are sometimes noticeable many years in advance.

With this knowledge, the healer and the client can work on appropriate measures to heal the distortion and avert the problem. One difficulty is, of course, that the information in the HEF is currently readable only by people who have a developed High Sense Perception. Another is that, with some notable exceptions, the medical world thinks we’re a bunch of fruitcakes.

Regardless of how many healers exist with this capability, it will never be enough to have a major impact on traditional health care. Nor will the multitude of anecdotal evidence of the effectiveness of energy healing influence authorities that cannot see or feel what we claim, particularly when many doubt or reject the whole idea of an unseen energy system through and around the physical body.

That is why I am calling for research into the development of instrumentation that can read the HEF. I think it is not just possible, but inevitable. Before I became a healer, I was a physicist at NASA where I worked with detectors that measured light radiating and reflecting in the different wavelengths from the earth. The human

energy field may contain similar wavelength bands especially in the ultra-violet spectrum and I have no doubt that with commitment and sufficient funding, it is only a matter of time before this is proven.

It doesn’t take much imagination to foresee the impact it would have on the treatment of cancer, heart disease and many of the other major health issues of today if every health center or doctor’s surgery was equipped with this kind of machinery.

For instance, you could measure if each organ of the body remained within its normal healthy frequency range. If not, it could be rebalanced and charged. For once it started moving out of that range, it would begin to affect other organs. I’ve seen this in relation to heart diseases and diabetes.

Current research into energy is limited and not necessarily heading in the right direction. Experiments are seeking to create an effect, such as using energy to wake up a nest of anaesthetized mice or to change microbes in a test tube. However informative these may be, it could be better aimed at proving the knowledge we already have of the human energy field.

It’s important to know that healing through the HEF is not just about preventative care. It can make substantial differences to people who are already suffering from disease or injury. In fact, the most visibly dramatic successes are often to do with sport injuries. A badly sprained ankle that might otherwise put you on crutches for a couple of weeks can be healed in 20 minutes, provided it’s dealt with quickly enough.

The healer goes into the first level of the field and repairs the little rivers of light that have been broken around the ankle. This simple restructuring of these energy lines re-establishes the flow of energy and nutrients to the cells and takes the swelling and bruising away. It is quite unbelievable to see it happen almost instantaneously.

Working on other levels, you can help to heal deep emotional issues and change the fear-based belief systems that stem from childhood wounding. But it is the ability to prevent disease that remains the most exciting possibility. Just imagine a world virtually free of illness.

The human energy field is a deep and fascinating place, familiar to many of us but unknown to most, and waiting patiently to be discovered and explored.

These are Aunty Angeline’s own words as she talks story: Anahola is special; that is why I am here. My health spa stands just below the Kalalea mountain; it is a place that is outside of time and yet where time is measured. This is a place of healing. It has always been a very special place to the Hawaiians. The kupuna (elders) told me that the land around here was all very lush during the time when the scourge of leprosy ravaged our people and that this was a place of healing at that time. No one but the Hawaiians knew that healing was going on here. The disease seemed to linger in the very air that people breathed, and it was a very sad time. Many people had family members who got leprosy. They wouldn’t tell anybody, because there were bounty hunters from the government who would take these people away to the leper colony in Molokai; they dropped them off in the ocean and left them to swim ashore. I know in my family there were people who were taken to Molokai and died there.

Anahola was known for healers, but they were not allowed to practice, so the healing that went on here had to be very hush hush. People came by canoe bringing family members who were infected. Everyone who lived here was involved as healers. They tended people’s wounds, using herbs, cleanses, steam, lomi, everything that is practiced here at my spa now, to help with this terrible curse that infected so much of our population. The sick would drink seawater to clean out the colon; seawater has 97 minerals and trace elements that rejuvenate the cells. Our kahuna (healers) performed magical and miraculous things with their healing. They used the plants, roots, fibers, including kukui nuts and kukui oil to

help clean out the body. Then, in the dark of night, families would take their members to Kalalau Valley and keep them there so they would not be found and so the family could be together.

I was not born in Anahola, but in Honolulu, where my sister and I were known for our hula performances. I met my husband, and we went to live in Mill Valley, California, and then in Santa Barbara, where my husband died. It bothered me to see how people there took care of their elders; they were warehoused. I worked with doctors and I saw that if patients did not die of cancer or heart disease, they ended up with Alzheimer’s. They were sent to convalescent homes, away from their families. I thought, “That is not how I want to go.”

Later, in Honolulu, I met my teacher, Aunty Margaret. She had a lot of knowledge, and people came to her from all over the world. They attributed miraculous cures to her work, although she didn’t make those claims herself. She was a Seventh Day Adventist, and she taught a special diet that eliminated all animal products. She used cleanses with sea water and Hawaiian herbs, and she gave lomi and steam salt rubs. I learned from her and I was inspired. I thought that this would help the kupuna, and I decided that when I found the right place, I would do the same healing work.

When I came to Anahola and saw the mountain, Kalalea, I decided that I wanted my healing center right in front of the mountain. I came here in 1976 at the age of 47, and because I was Hawaiian, was able to sign up for Hawaiian Homestead Land. I could not afford to buy anything, but at that time you could

Mu`olaulani, Sacred Sanctuary of Anahola“The budding and blossoming of plants”

When I first approached Aunty Angeline about this article she admonished me to “first have a lomi lomi, then we can talk.” That sounded like a good idea to me . . . . and so I did. What follows unfolded just a few days after my wonderful massage.

Sitting with Aunty Angeline is a delightfully surprising experience. If one conjured up the appearance of a woman of 78 years who had suffered a stroke 10 years earlier, it would be anything but the woman who sat before me. I found her mind remarkably bright, imaginative and in possession of a power of recall that enchanted me.

Her skin texture is remarkably smooth; her hands, particularly, look like the hands of someone 30 years younger. Although she has some gray in her hair, her face has few wrinkles, and radiates a warm and comforting glow that elicits feelings of peace and well-being. Angeline’s gentle presence conveys an ageless passion that is the source of her being, emanating from a place outside of time, just like her precious mountain sister, Kalalea, which rests as a guardian whose aura provides a sweet embrace for her healing center.

Born in Honolulu in 1929, one of five children, Angeline Kaihalanaopuna Hopkins, is descended from both Hawaiian and English ancestry. In the Hawaiian tradition, I apologize in advance if I say anything in error. My intent is to pass on the knowledge from what I have been taught (both in body and in spirit) or discovered along the way.

The ancient Hawaiians believed that we were all one with the Creator and that everything was filled with Divine Source (Ke Akua) Mana (spiritual energy). This included animals, plants, rocks, ocean, sky, etc… Because everything had Mana and Divine Source energy in it everything was treated with respect. Consequently, the ancient Hawaiians honored all forms of life and to this day ask a plant for permission before picking it’s fruit, leaves or flowers.

The Kahuna (Kahuna is both singular and plural) in ancient times were an important part of the community and held the highest Mana. To be a Kahuna in Hawaii meant one was an expert, the equivalent of someone who had a Ph.D. in a particular field. There were Kahuna of canoe making, navigation, agriculture, chants and music, fishery, net making, carving, etc.

There were over 40 kinds of craft Kahuna. These included 14 kinds of healing arts Kahuna that included: herb doctor, one who diagnoses illness by feeling the body, massage expert, midwife, bone setter, tooth doctors, faith healers, etc. There were also spiritual Kahuna who were prophets, dream interpreters, ones who spoke to spirits, reader of skies and omens, and the High Priests and Priestesses. There was also sorcerer Kahuna who were said to pray people to death.

Each of the Kahuna was considered to be the highest expert in his or her field and had to have extensive training in their art. Usually Kahuna were recognized at a young age as having a natural talent in a particular area. They were then watched to see if these abilities developed and if the child was willing to learn more. Mostly Tutu (grandparent), Auntie, Uncle or parent would train a child in the Kahuna ways and many children would live with the one doing the teaching. There are many stories of incredible healings done by the Ancient Kahuna, even stories of broken bones, diseases and other ailments being healed instantly! This may be in part because children were told that they were born with a miraculous bowl of light. They were taught that if they tended their bowl of light that it would

get stronger and grow to the point that they could do anything! This included knowing everything, flying like the birds and even swimming with the sharks. However, whenever a child (or adult) would have out-of-harmony emotions, like jealousy, anger and hatred a stone would develop in his or her bowl replacing some of the light. If enough stones go into the bowl all of the light will disappear and it is taught that he or she will turn into a stone. The stone can not grow or evolve, but if at some point the person tires of being a stone all they have to do is empty the stones out, and the light will fill up the bowl again. Because of this belief the Kahuna’s first question to an ailing patient might be, “What stones are you carrying around?” This would be discussed in depth. The Kahuna would then pray that all of the stones would be emptied from the patient’s bowl. The Kahuna, with the help of the Aumakua, might send healing Mana from the Divine Source into the patient. The Kahuna, through the “ha” breath, saturated themselves with large quantities of mana, and then sent a picture of the patient completely healed to the patient’s higher self. The patient was then filled with the mana. Healings were done to heal and balance the three parts of the self: the basic self (the physical self), the middle self (the mental self) and the higher self (the spiritual self). Sometimes a patient might be told that their illness was because of a lesson that they had refused to learn until now. The healings were done in rounds and could have one hand on the front of a patient and one on the back of a power center (i.e. chakra). A rainbow of mana (spiritual life force energy) might be sent from a power center to a problem area. All of this is very close to the information that I brought through on how to heal using Kahuna ARCH Healing. Native Hawaiian Kahuna Lokahi, from the Big Island, confirms that Kahuna ARCH Healing is the same powerful mana that the Ancient Kahuna used to heal bones and other ailments instantly!

In the last issue of Inspiration (March-April 2007) we explored yoga and love in terms of relationships. So while we are in the mood of tackling the big subjects, let’s take a look at the aspect of the energy called death as it relates to a hatha yoga practice.

It has been said that we die every day. Our hatha yoga practice is in essence a mirror of how we move in our everyday lives, and each time we take to the mat we experience a kind of death, a letting go.

Each posture is asking us to let go of how we think we are supposed to move. Each posture often asks us to put to rest a pattern or rut that we have been cultivating over years.

Over my years of practice and teaching I have often observed students (and myself) entering a posture with a renewed sense of energy and excitement. This is the flip side of the dying or letting go; it is the birth of the posture. Its energy is just that, a movement into a new space, maybe experienced before, maybe not.

As we work into it, when the posture feels good we feel as if we could hold onto it just a little bit longer, perhaps forever. But in the framework of the practice we will need to let go, to move on to the next asana. When it is a challenge, when it hits the edge that brings up “stuff” or challenges our limits of strength and endurance, we want to stop, let it go now. In both instances the exit is often a hurried and less than graceful attempt to get to the next place to see if it is any better. None of this is wrong; by the way, it is a natural tendency. There is an acknowledgement of the death of that moment. Our emotional/physical make up dictates how we are going to do that. But there is a loss of learning opportunity when we forget to honor

that exiting. Consider getting out of the posture with as much enthusiasm, integrity and mindfulness as we had getting into it.

This tendency is revealed in other aspects of life as well. Take a look at how you enter and leave relationships or jobs, leave one home and move to another, or even how you get into and out of conversations. Each requires a letting go, an exiting, a little death.

In the posture of savasana, the corpse pose, which usually comes at the very end of a session, one can often encounter fidgeting and agitation as if this acknowledgement of death, as its name suggests, may bring discomfort. But it brings with it also a time of replenishing energy and rest, total relaxation.

The hatha practice in its entirety is based on learning to let go. That letting go leads (in terms of the asana) many times to new discoveries such as greater openness, flexibility, energy and strength. Each quality arrives as is neatly prescribed – by each of us according to our needs.

In this context it can also be observed that life is a constant exercise of acceptance and then the ultimate letting go and then an opening to…?

What a gift to be able to become comfortable with this aspect of life

called death. A very powerful meditation among swamis is to sit amidst cremated bodies to further understand and embrace this aspect of human existence, this principle of an ever-evolving life. Death and life - not opposites. In-breath and out-breath - not opposites. Male and female - not opposites. Right and left, up and down, inner and outer - all interdependent partners, one setting up for the other.

As you move into your practice - on the mat or off, yogi or not, with whatever facilitator you have chosen – be prepared to “die” a little. Die to who you think you are, to how the practice should be, and surrender to the unlimited possibilities of the present moment.

May we realize a peace that depends on … nothing. - Namaste

by Suzanna Kennedy A celebration of great magnitude is in order! The wildfire of attention given to the movie The Secret signals a massive consciousness awakening. My gratitude goes out to Rhonda Byrne for producing it and to Oprah for creating more awareness of it in the world.

After you have a chance to play with the “law of attraction” for a while, you may find inconsistency in the results. Sometimes it will seem to work like magic; other times it seems to not work at all or gives you some skewed version of your conscious manifestation. There are two main reasons for this:

• Early Programming• M u l t i - D i m e n s i o n a l

Reality

Early ProgrammingSome will feel challenged because their minds seem to be on automatic pilot, continuing to offer up mostly thoughts based in fear/separation/lack consciousness. Our thoughts spring forth from our minds’ computer-like programming, which was created in our first seven years of life.

Think of your ego as a self-identity program running within your mind/body bio-computer. This self-identity program constructed your

identity in the

first seven years of your

life by looking for patterns in your

experience. When it recognized a pattern,

it assigned a meaning to the pattern. The meaning and the pattern became a “rule” in computer terms – you call it a belief.

This rule was added to your programming. At around seven years of age, your self-identify program stopped adding new rules and began gathering data to provide evidence to support the rules it created. At that point, your ego’s job became protecting your mind-created identity. That’s why it is so hard to improve your self-image. Your programming was created by you, as a child, with your immature understanding, inadequate and wounded perspective, within the limited environment of your family, school, church and neighborhood.

The Secret teaches that your thoughts produce feelings and feelings produce actions (or reactions) and the combination creates your reality. But how do you stop those old fear/lack-based thoughts from popping into your head?

What’s missing from the “law of attraction” teachings is the step that comes BEFORE thought – your programming. The most effective way to generate positive thoughts, feelings, and actions that are consistent with what you consciously choose to create is to upgrade your programming. You can upgrade from lack/limitation/separation consciousness to love/joy/prosperity consciousness.

When you upgrade your programming, your mind will

generate positive thoughts, which produce positive feelings and positive actions. You will make

better choices. You will suddenly see opportunities your mind filtered out before. You will be open to the prosperity your ego was holding at bay in order to be loyal to your mind-created identity.

Multi-Dimensional RealityMother Earth has already raised her frequency enough to host multi-dimensional paradise realities. Humans have the opportunity to ascend with her and enjoy higher dimensional versions of Earth where the lower frequencies of fear, poverty, illness, struggle and pain cannot exist.

The Secret teaches you to imagine what you want to create, feel it as if it already exits and then allow it to unfold. But what happens if you are limited by your imagination? Where does your imagination come from? Its foundation is built upon your past experience in a 3-dimensional reality based in fear, limitation and separation consciousness. Can you even imagine the infinite possibilities that exist in higher multi-dimensional reality? Not really, we don’t have a frame of reference for it.

Two years ago, knowing that we were moving toward this evolution in our basic reality structure, I was inspired to develop and teach a new way of manifesting called “manifesting from the heart.”

Instead of using your mind to imagine what you want to create, use your feelings. Determine how you want to feel when your manifestation takes form and avoid formulating any thoughts about what it may look like. Then, in meditation, create a heart-based holographic blueprint of the manifestation. Send the blueprint out into the void, which will attract a holographic image of a matching potential reality and bring it to your consciousness for closer examination. Look at it from many different perspectives and decide if you like it. If you do, then anchor it into the earth to experience it in your physical reality. This is how multi-dimensional beings in multi-dimensional earth will co-create their own version of paradise on earth.

The major impact of the human population, especially our use of fossil fuel and its impact on global climate change, is no longer theory, but scientific fact. Urgent wide-scale action is needed now if we hope to mitigate its potentially disastrous effects. The United States has failed to sign the Kyoto Protocol Treaty, the international agreement to address climate disruptions. The treaty sets binding legal commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions on the average of 5% below 1990 levels by the year 2012. Although we have less than 5% of the world’s population, the US produces more than 25% of the global greenhouse gas emissions, with the numbers increasing daily. There are many sources of information on the Kyoto treaty. Here is one: http://www.cnn.com/SPECIALS/2001/globalwarming/. In 2005, after the US failed to ratify the Kyoto treaty, people organized in their communities to look at what could be done on the local level to take responsibility to help curb greenhouse gas emissions. Mayors from around the country met in June of 2005 in response to more than 80% of Americans who think the US should be acting to reduce global warming pollution. The group “Cities Working Together to Protect Our Air Quality, Health and Environment: A Call to Action” was formed. Seattle’s Mayor Greg Nickels introduced the US Mayors Climate Protection Agreement. Kauai Mayor Bryan Baptiste is among the 360 mayors who have now signed the agreement which acknowledges the important role of cities and counties in taking action to reduce global warming pollution both in county operations and in the community at large. The agreement urges the federal and state governments to enact policies and programs to meet or beat the Kyoto Protocol target. It also sets the same targets for Mayors and recommends twelve specific actions: 1. Inventory global warming emissions in county operations and in the community and create an action plan. 2. Adopt and enforce land-use policies that reduce sprawl and preserve open space. 3. Promote transportation options such as bicycle trails, public transit and incentives for car pooling. 4. Advocate for development of renewable energy resources and for recovering landfill methane for energy production. 5. Make energy efficiency a priority through building code improvements and encourage employees to conserve. 6. Purchase Energy Star equipment and appliances for county use. 7. Practice and promote sustainable building practices. 8. Increase fuel efficiency of county vehicles; convert diesel vehicles to bio-diesel. 9. Increase pump efficiency in water and wastewater systems. 10. Increase recycling rates. 11. Maintain forests and greenery for CO2 absorption. 12. Help educate schools, employees, businesses and the community about reducing global warming pollution.

To read the US Mayors Climate Protection Agreement in greater detail go to www.seattle.gov/mayor.

Mayor Baptiste has been a strong proponent of bike ways for Kauai since he entered office and has been tenacious in securing federal funds to build a path from Anahola to Lihue which is presently under construction. He has worked to expand the services of the county bus system by securing federal funds to add routes and bus stops, purchase more buses and add bike racks to make buses more user friendly. His administration has created the Lihue lunch shuttle. His administration is working to create a park and ride program on the west and east sides of the island to assist commuters and will encourage county employees to use once it is in place. County vehicles are being replaced with hybrids. Mayor Baptiste is in the process of awarding a contract for the installation of photovoltaic system at the Lihue Civic Center. If successful, PV systems will be utilized at other county facilities on Kauai and can serve as a model for other businesses. His administration is working on providing an informational workshop to visitor industry businesses on how to “green” their operations. Green building practices will be on the agenda for that event. The county is currently developing a program to use the methane gas from Kekaha Landfill to generate electricity for use at either PMRF or by KIUC. The Mayor is working with state officials to implement actions aimed at increasing the production and use of bio-fuels on Kauai in the next 15 years. He also supports “run of the river” hydro-electric systems that are environmentally friendly. Perhaps the most important question is not what “they” are doing, but what it is that we as individuals are doing and can do to take action and responsibility. As consumers we can question every time we purchase or use something: What was used to produce this item? What did it take to get it here? How long will it last and where will it go when I am finished with it? Do I really need it?

Vehicles using fossil fuel are the biggest contributor to greenhouse gases. By walking, riding bikes, carpooling, using the bus, minimizing our car travel and using vehicles that use less gas, we reduce our contributions to greenhouse gases and other air pollutants.

We can conserve energy in our own homes by converting to solar water heaters. Electric water heaters are the biggest energy user in most Kauai homes and KIUC has rebates and no-interest loans as incentives to go solar now. When replacing appliances shop for energy-efficient ones, such as CFL bulbs and Conserve. Live more thoughtfully. Less can be better for everyone.

Be informed. Get involved. APOLLO Kauai is an environmental non-profit group formed on Kauai in 2005 and is affiliated with the national Apollo Alliance. Our mission is the promotion of energy efficiency and conservation, the development of appropriate renewable energy resources, and the use of energy efficient and non-polluting transportation systems at individual, local and state levels through education, advocacy, demonstration and legislation to improve sustainability, livability and prosperity on Kauai.

Energy medicine is very popular and extremely successful, sometimes resolving conditions that have previously been consideredincurable. The intelligence of these methods is an enhancement of the functioning of the immune system, and this is obviously the best thing that we can do to improve health and increase longevity.

The ONDAMED is the most recent cutting edge technology available today, designed by Rolf Binder of Germany. The Ondamed is a biofeedback device that is designed to balance the

human body emotionally, physically, and mentally. In Europe the Ondamed system is CE certified as a Class ll Medical Therapy Device. In the USA it is registered with the FDA as a Biofeedback Class ll medical device, category Neurology.

Ondamed means “wave” medicine. It uses the VAS (vascular autonomic response) “the wrist pulse” to determine the best protocol for the patient’s therapeutic session. The Ondamed practitioner monitors the pulse of the patient during a series of scans for the optimal frequency or program to correct the and the AUTONOMIC NERVOUS SYSTEM respond to the frequency by causing a spike or a drop in the pulse, signaling to the practitioner to record this frequency in the database memory so it can be chosen for a possible therapeutic session.

Western biomedicine has held back in looking at life from the

energetic perspective because the predominant focus has been on chemistry, biochemistry and pharmacology. Chemistry is one of many successful approaches to life and health. Energy medicine is filling in many of the previously unexplored or unknown areas in the puzzle of life and healing, and thereby increasing our understandings of how to help patients live longer and happier lives.

If the body is injured or if there is an infection, a set of energetic reactions takes place to alert the whole body that something hashappened, and to regulate the healing process. For example, if I get an injuryto my arm, a wave of electrical energy called the injury potential spreads away from the site of injury. An orthopedic surgeon, Robert O. Becker, MD, documented this process in papers published in the early 1990’s. Ideally, the injury potential spreads throughout the body and informs every cell of the size

and location of the injury. In this way, cells a distance from an injury can participate in the repair process if necessary. For example, in a serious injury, cells from the bone marrow or liver may be recruited to assist in the repair process.

Recent medical research is showing that one of the main obstacles to longevity is best described in terms of energy. And the best approach to treatment is energetic. The repair of the wound or the defense of the body against disease as elaborate processes that cannot be understood without reference to energetics. These vital mechanisms operate automatically, usually without our conscious awareness. Defending the body against disease and rapid healing of injuries are obviously key issues in anti-aging. There are two requirements for the body to respond appropriately to damage or disease. Tissues must be able

Page 23: 4 Year Anniversary Issue - Inspiration Journal · KANEOHE Straub Family Health Center Public Library Kokokahi YWCA WAIMANALO Waimanalo Health Center School and Public Library HAWAII

to conduct injury potentials and chemical messages from a site of injury, and tissues must allow the migration of cells to the site of the injury. Injury potentials are examples of subtle but measurable electrical communications that regulate the countless processes involved in sustaining life. The migrating cells are of two basic types. Cells of the immune system, such as neutrophils and leukocytes, are needed to destroy bacteria and clean up debris from tissue damage. Cells such as fibroblasts and osteoblasts are needed to repair and replace damaged tissues. If communication processes or cell migrations are compromised, an injury will heal slowly. And, if the injury is slow to heal, a low level chronic inflammation may set in. Obviously tissues that are even modestly inflamed or bruised or inflexible are not as effective at these vital processes as they could be.

Inflammation is a key part of the wound repair process, and is fundamentally an energetic phenomenon. The reason for this is that the key inflammatory molecules are free radicals, which are molecules that have an unpaired electron. Free radicals and other molecules such as histamines cause the swelling, heat, redness, tenderness, pain and loss of range of motion produced by inflammation.

Low levels of chronic inflammation arise because free radicals can leak from a site of injury to nearby tissues and start to break down healthy cells. This causes more signals to go out to the immune system, attracting more immune cells, which secrete more free radicals. This vicious cycle gives rise to “silent inflammation” and has been identified as the basic cause of many different diseases and disorders. This includes diseases that were not previously considered inflammatory.

Many of these inflammatory conditions are classified as diseases of aging: • Rheumatoid arthritis • Multiple sclerosis • Arteriosclerosis • Diabetes • Alzheimer’s disease • Osteoporosis • Prostate cancer • Asthma • Cirrhosis of the liver • Bowel disorders • Psoriasis • Meningitis • Cystic fibrosis • Cancer

This discovery has led to a major shift in biomedical research. The study of silent inflammation is engaging many researchers around the world. By doing a search of Pub Med, the database of the National Library of Medicine, it is revealed that there are over 50,000 references to the above diseases when searched with the key word, inflammation. It is obvious that a pocket of inflammation can become a barrier to the important processes just described: the conduction of the injury potential, diffusion of signal molecules and cell migration. In other words, the injury that is slow to heal can compromise the healing process. The inflammatory process is taking place to some degree within all of us. It is an intelligent response of the body. In terms of prevention and longevity, our goal must be to find ways of resolving silent inflammation and maintaining our immune systems so they can rapidly repair the inevitable bumps and bruises and scrapes and scratches and other minor or more serious problems. Experience with various energetic approaches shows that the body is actually designed to provide extremely rapid healing: this is our natural state, our birthright. There are several ways of neutralizing free radicals that cause silent inflammation. One is to provide antioxidants as

dietary supplements. A second method is to get electrons to sites of inflammation, since electrons are the most natural form of antioxidant. This was demonstrated in the early 1980’s, when orthopedic surgeons at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons discovered that passing a minute electric current through a bone fracture can stimulate healing. This proved to be effective for jump-starting healing in a serious clinical condition known as delayed union of fracture (improper healing within 6 months) or fracture nonunion (failure of union after 6 months). One of the underlying causes of delayed union or fracture nonunion is chronic inflammation. One successful method is called pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) therapy. Magnetic pulses induce current flow through the bone, delivering electrons to the site of inflammation where they can neutralize free radicals. A second method involves implanting an electrical stimulator near the fracture site. Both of these methods deliver electrons that can neutralize lingering free radicals, allowing the healing process to proceed.

PEMF and electrical stimulation have been very successful and have been used in tens of thousands of cases. Further research has revealed that injuries to other tissues, such as ligaments, nerves, capillaries, and skin also respond to minute electrical currents, with each tissue having a different optimal stimulation frequency.

Specialized pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMF) transmitted from the Ondamed instrument stimulate the nervous system to help reduce stress. The immune system is enhanced and strengthened by reducing stress. PEMF allows the patient to feel better, stronger, more energetic, and enjoy improved sleeping patterns. PEMF is used for wound healing, bone growth, pain relief, and

other conditions related to regeneration and homeostasis or well-being. ANYBODY benefits from the use of the ONDAMED. Specialized electromagnetic fields emitted from the specialized applicators create an induction in all the body’s cells, and this vibration (movement), enhances the lymphatic system, and the blood flow thus reducing tension in the body.

There are several obvious ways of keeping our immune systems tuned up and ready to respond to injury or disease. The key is to maintain the quality of our tissues so they can conduct energy and information and allow for the migration of cells. ONDAMED is a medical device able to locate and repair sites of silent inflammation.. It uses a sophisticated frequency technology that scans the entire body, locating and correcting communication pathways that are not functioning properly.

We have reached a point in healthcare where there are many options available to patients interested in restoring and maintaining their health. The patient of the future will define the medicine of the future by the choices they make. And the patient of the future and the medicine of the future will take advantage of sophisticated medical devices such as ONDAMED that can monitor the state of one’s physiology and correct imbalances if they arise. Seeing the emergence of these technologies gives hope for the future of medicine in general and of anti-aging medicine in particular.

The Alchemy of WaterVisionary of Hawaii : Chad Durkin

By Andrea Nandoskar

Native Hawaiians have always engaged in a relationship with the natural world born of a deep respect and humility, illustrated by the saying “E ola pono me ka aina a me ke kai” - “Live right by the land and sea.” Creating natural systems that support this philosophy is increasingly important as our human impact on nature continues to grow here in the Islands.

Enter Dr. John Todd a biologist, ecological engineer and founder of Ocean Arks International. Based on his own research and that of other biologists such as Kathy Seidel, he began to create water restoration projects modeled after wetland systems’ ability to work as natural filters to purify water. The idea is to run waste or nutrient dense water through a natural system of plants, bacteria and microorganisms to produce purified water which can be used for drinking and/or irrigation. Dr. Todd has called the process the “New Alchemy—turning waste into a resource.”

Chad Durkin, Todd’s former student and fellow ecological designer and visionary, elaborates: “It’s about ecological integration for human societies and human infrastructures. With awareness of these natural, traditional recycling methods we can reduce our impact on our neighboring ecologies in the ocean, streams or lakes or wherever this wastewater is being discharged as well as making sure that people are drinking good clean water.”

It’s obvious that Chad, who grew up on the Windward side of Oahu, has a deep passion for the natural world and feels a strong commitment to help develop and work with technologies that reduce our human “footprint” on these natural ecosystems. “We are so gifted here in Hawaii with a beautiful natural environment that’s so diverse and inspirational, that being aware of that environment, enjoying it but also protecting it and enhancing it by making appropriate big picture decisions is paramount. [But] as nice as it is to be here in Hawaii, Hawaii isn’t that far from the rest of the world. It’s one ocean and one atmosphere and we really should be part of that global community and global awareness.”

We are standing near a mobile version of one of Dr. Todd’s projects stationed at the Hawaii Nature Center. The system is small but impressive currently taking in about 50 gallons of waste water a day, with the capacity to receive 5,000 to 10,000 gallons a day. There are 12 tanks planted with native Hawaiian plants such as akaakai, makaloa, apua ava and others growing hydroponically in the water

while an aeration system circulates the water top to bottom in each tank. The wastewater is introduced into the tanks and becomes the food for the bacteria which grows on the roots of the plants and the surface areas of the tanks. This process cleans the water.

Chad explains, “These technologies were originally brought to Hawaii by Jan Dill, a Native Hawaiian who, along with a couple of partners, a series of grants and eventually a for-profit company, Strategic Solutions, introduced Dr. Todd’s projects to the Islands. These are a perfect fit because of our climate and the idea of ahupuaa or resource management within a land area or watershed, which already has strong cultural and historic roots here.”

C h a d stresses that s h a r i n g knowledge of these s y s t e m s is crucial especially when it comes to educating y o u n g p e o p l e

about their surroundings and how to be good stewards of the land. An education program offered through Partners in Development Foundation - a Native Hawaiian engineering mentoring program – averages 1-2 classes a month introducing these technologies to students of all ages. Chad elaborates, “We also work closely with the Native Hawaiian charter schools and provide a teacher training workshop. Our watershed field trip includes the Nature Center model as well as the Ala Wai Canal Project, making it a lesson on watershed dynamics integrating science curriculum and social and cultural ideas regarding resource management and environmental protection.”

He explains that the Ala Wai project was created as a demonstration model to help reduce excessive nutrients and soil build-up in the canal resulting from run-off caused by rain and flooding. “Our goal was to show we were able to grow these plants and co-exist with the bird and fish populations as well as the human users of the canal without negatively impacting the canal’s ecology. It was a successful demonstration and we now hope to expand the project to a level where the treatment of the system would actually be large enough to impact the canal’s water quality.”

Among other local systems is a three-acre fishpond on the Big Island at the Four Seasons Kona hotel, which, according to Chad, “draws upon the Native Hawaiian cultural use of fish ponds as an important source of food for the community. The system uses a natural filter to maintain the water quality and grows fish and shrimp for the four-star Alan Wong restaurant, saving the hotel thousands of dollars in electricity by not running pumps to clean the water and creating a food source to boot.” The project won accolades including a Region 9 EPA Award as an example of how to integrate sound ecological technologies into a traditional business model and enhance the bottom line.

Chad emphasizes these systems are really scaled to their communities and have tremendous potential to alleviate some of the burden placed upon our current larger, more centralized, waste disposal systems. He emphasizes the importance of community in creating these systems since their maintenance and success ultimately depends upon human intervention and monitoring. The more knowledgeable and supportive the surrounding community the more likely the project will be successful and create viable water transforming solutions into the future. According to Chad, water remediation projects such as these have been established in China, throughout Europe, Australia and the U.S.

Also exciting is Dr. Todd’s larger vision for building eco-cities which use waste waster and recapture rain and storm water to create oases in the urban environment. Plants in these systems are grown for food in a truly beautiful environmentally sustainable way, combining man’s practical need to eat with his deeper more aesthetic need to connect with nature.

As the water moving through the tanks bubbles in the background a mynah bird lands nearby saucily taunting us, and I’m reminded of just how interdependent we all are. Chad states it well, “It’s actually a pretty finite and small planet that we are all riding on and when you think about seven generations - your kids’, kids’, kids’, kids’, kids’, kids’ kids - it’s not that far away. Everything has cause and effect and we’re all one on the ride, as Buckminster Fuller said, on Spaceship Earth. Solutions such as Chad and Dr. Todd’s inspire real hope for the future.

The sound of cows are heard in wide-open fields talking among themselves, as the smell of an ancient amber incense gently caresses the air inside the classroom. Sitting inside the farm house with our Ayurvedic class, I feel mesmerized at the devotion seen deep inside the eyes of these poor working villagers who have come for treatment. They are here to receive Ayurvedic herbal medicines, herbal eye and nose drops and marma chikitsa (therapy) from our teacher, and their doctor, Dr. V. Lad. Most of them do not speak English, but our observation about the way they move and look tells us something about their pulse even before we begin to touch their skin. This is a small village outside of Pune India where we are all learning more about the practical applications of Ayurveda. We are offering free medicines and healing with our loving touch to these village patients longing for attention and care. Ayurveda means “The knowledge of life.” The word “Ayu” or “life” means the intelligence within the four principals of life - soul, mind, senses and body and how they all work together within the totality of life. Ayurveda is thousands of years old, so ancient that it’s exact date of existence has not been recorded. The rishis or realized seers of truth recognized through intense meditation, that all of the external elements of nature are very closely linked to the internal elements living inside each and every one of us including all living and non living beings. From the five elements: either, air, fire, water, earth exist three Doshas (biological humors). These are Vata, pitta and kapha. Vata consisting of either and air, pitta - fire and water, and kapha - water and earth. An observation of one’s astrological birth chart is included, which reveals certain personalities of the planets in relationship to one’s individual constitution and general well being.

India is continually teaching me the gift of embracing human life as divine. I have never seen so much joy in the poorest of children, gratitude in the old and sick and humility and love in the lives of all casts, rich or poor. It is an honor to be a part of this beautiful culture that reminds us to honor and bow to all beings as teachers of the heart.

Margo gal recently completed clinical studies with her teacher Dr. V. lad in pune india. she has been a certified ayurvedic practitioner since 1987 under Dr. V. lad and more recently certified in india under pancha karma specialist Dr. s. Joshi and kalidas university. To be totally open to abundance in our lives, we must allow time for ourselves, to tap into our innermost needs and wants. This is very powerful and something completely within our own control.

If we don’t feel we can afford “time for self” today, what on earth makes us think we will ever experience abundance tomorrow?

If we’re constantly looking outside ourselves for love and approval or not being honest with ourselves for the sake of money, it will be at the cost of our personal freedom and integrity. That can’t lead to abundance...only bankruptcy. With no integrity or freedom, what is the point of abundance?

There is no experience of true wealth as an outcome of that ... only the opportunity to feel right about being a loser when our world collapses around us. Do you really want to be right about that? I don’t! I want to be right that I can make a difference, that I am loveable and useful to the Godforce, that I am abundant in all things. I want to be right...that I carry the light of God within and have the power and balance to share that light effectively with others.

I have discovered, after many mistakes, that when I make life choices based on another’s approval, I am effectively severing my relationship with my most powerful ally ... my own Godself. If that’s what’s happening for you, my advice is to change your perspective and expectations. That means consciously changing from “lack” to “luster.” What does that mean?

“Lack” is easy to understand, but what about “luster”?

Luster is an interesting word. It comes from the Latin word luce which means light. Luster is the kind of light that reflects back. To become lusterless is to have an internal ability to hold our own light and to reflect that light to others in abundance, effortlessly like a perfect pearl.[Do you really mean luster-less?]

What do you want? What describes abundance to you? You must describe it in detail in order to call it forth in your life!

Tom Bowen developed Bowenwork therapy in Australia about forty years ago. Relatively new in this country, word is spreading about its effectiveness.

Bowenwork involves gentle, yet powerful, movements on muscle and connective tissue, and may be done through clothing. These movements prompt soft tissue release, sending neurological impulses to the brain. Because the impulses travel through the internal nervous system pathways, they stimulate whole brain responses, which address every system in the body, internal organ systems as well as musculo-skeletal structure.

By selecting appropriate combinations and sequences of moves, the practitioner is able to address the body as a whole, and to target more specific problems. Healing occurs by affecting the body’s autonomic nervous system, which creates homeostasis at the cellular level.

Pauses are inserted between sets of these moves, which allow the brain to process and send messages to realign the body. It is thought that because the whole brain is stimulated, the original, genetic pattern is re-awakened, and the more recent injury and compensation patterns are released, even years after the original injury.

Respecting these pauses is an essential component of Bowenwork, for that allows the body sufficient time to remember and restore its own healthy, natural balance and allows the practitioner to work on multiple clients simultaneously. The gentleness of the Bowen Technique protects the therapist from overuse injury while providing positive results and lasting effects for the client. It is not uncommon to develop separate clientele for Bowenwork and massage.

Treatments are individualized, generally lasting sixty minutes.

Traumas, old injuries and chronic pain begin to unwind. Typically there is rapid change after addressing acute conditions and a steady improvement of chronic conditions. Bowenwork frequently triggers surprising and unexpected recovery, even when nothing else has been successful. Most often, surprisingly few sessions are needed to alleviate complaints, whether structural or functional, even if long-standing. The results hold for a long time, generally until there is a re-injury. Many people choose to have monthly or quarterly maintenance sessions (“tune-ups”) once their initial complaint is addressed. It is ideal to have a session as soon after an injury as possible, before the body begins to compensate.People throughout the world have found lasting relief from lower back pain, sciatica, sports injuries, sprains, knee pain, shoulder restrictions, carpal tunnel, whiplash, migraines, headaches, TMJ, chronic sinus infections, fibromyalgia, chronic stress, neurological, digestive problems and countless other conditions.

Bowenwork is completely safe and appropriate for everyone from the highly trained athlete to newborns, pregnant women, the elderly and the chronically ill. The most common reaction to Bowenwork is a deep sense of overall relaxation, relief from muscular tension and pain and a heightened sense of well being.

Dr. Rowen’s Second Opinion Newsletter (July ’03), headlined Bowenwork therapy as “the gentlest, most effective pain therapy ever.” Prevention Magazine describes Bowenwork as “the only bodywork technique that is effective in treating fibromyalgia”. O, the Oprah Magazine (July ’04), names Bowenwork as one of “the most innovative body therapies.”

How do you deal with pain? Do you do your best to ignore it and to keep on keepin’ on? Do you tell yourself, “No pain, no gain,” and do you steel yourself and grit your teeth and bear it? Do you do visualizations combined with or without strong exhalations to rid yourself of whatever might be causing the discomfort?

Odds are, you use one of the above strategies to deal with physical and other pain. And, while any one of these may have served you well, at Æssential Nurturance, you are invited to experiment with a different approach. You may have heard the expression, “what you resist, persists.” It is my belief that when we resist sensations that we have come to define as painful, it actually results in their “digging in even deeper.” The more we focus on wanting to be free of the discomfort and try to get rid of it, the less chance we have of achieving release and thus relaxation. On a recent show about The Secret, Oprah offered the idea that “whatever you focus on, expands.” In this case, even if you’re focusing on wanting to get rid of the discomfort, you’re still focusing on the discomfort and thus you may get the opposite of what you desire.

Æssential Nurturance offers you an opportunity to fully explore and appreciate your body via each of the varied sensations which may arise during the session. With the assistance of a unique yet simple breathing technique, Æssential Nurturance invites you to participate fully in a dance that may lead to your more fully embodying your body… perhaps for the first time ever! Learn how to savor each feeling and sensation as a means to resolving physical discomfort and releasing stuck energy. The lightness and profound relaxation that follows cannot be described with words, but it can be felt…deeply.

Few of us—even those in intimate relationships—rarely get (enough of) the deeply nurturing touching and the pure, focused attention of another being that our body and spirit need to really thrive. If you are ready to really experience and really enjoy your body, or if you would simply like to explore some of the possibilities, call Yana (on Oahu) at 348-3644 or email her at [email protected] or check out …Æssential Nurturance online at www.kaimanayana.com.

By Eva GeuekeMany people become aware at some point their

lives that they have bad posture. But how to correct it, and what is correct?

They often resort to old-fashioned ways, like pulling their shoulders back or tucking their pelvis under, which seem to correct their stance. Yet they are not aware that they are putting their necks in an even more compromised position or that they can freeze their shoulder blades in an unnatural place. Or they bring their upper body back from the mid back. This increases pressure on their lower vertebras and can lead to bulged disks, sciatica and hop joint degeneration. In an innocent effort to improve their posture, they put more strain on their vertebras, joints and organs.

With compromised posture important organs like the heart, lungs, kidneys and intestines might be hindered from doing their optimal work. For example, when the thoracic spine behind the heart area is too rounded and stiff, the ribs get immobile and the heart does not have the space to work optimally and may not get enough oxygen. Also, bad posture can adversely affect eyesight, thinking, mood, bones, joints and ligaments. People age faster.

Proper posture makes you look and feel good. You appear elegant yet powerful. Good posture and mobility in your spine significantly contribute to your overall health.

Posture is not static, but needs to adapt to our actions. Good posture is not stiff or held tightly. Uprightness needs to go hand in hand with mobility in all of the vertebras. In truth it can only be acquired by developing an inner sense about your skeleton and length in the thoracic spine. Optimal posture comes not from muscular effort by from the optimal use of the skeleton.

Through the Feldenkrais Method® you can learn without struggle or effort to change your posture or acture (posture in movement) from the inside out. It is accomplished using words, subtle touch and smart movement sequences developed by Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais.

When people come to me, I first look at their particular posture from all angles. Then I give them an idea about where they are and how they can achieve their optimal posture. I set up a plan with them that helps them to develop more length, mobility and good posture or acture. Some people are helped simply by knowing what not to do. For others there are subtle Felenkrais® hands-on sessions and smart movement sequences that are chosen particularly for them.

Eva Geueke has been a Guild-certified Feldenkrais Teacher® since 1987 (San Rafael, CA); a dancer (Rotterdam’s Dansacademie, Cunningham Studio, NYC) and choreographer; and Qi Gong teacher. She teaches WaveWorks, which grew out of Continuum Movements created by Emily Conrad with whom she studied for many years. Prior to coming to Maui she was director and teacher of several dance programs in Germany, teaching modern dance, Capoeira and contact improvisation. She has been a Feldenkrais teacher internationally for 20 years. On Maui she has been teaching at the Studio Maui for over four years. She is the founding director of E Wahine, an empowerment training for women. Visit her website www.ewahine.com or call (808) 344-0925.

Lama Wangchuk, spiritual director of Honolulu-based Kamtsang Sherab Choling, has a wonderful new offering of traditional Tibetan Buddhist chants, in an easy-listening and very professional format. The eighteen tracks on the CD are chants which are offered daily in monasteries and dharma centers around the world.

Lama Wangchuk is a native Tibetan and was a monk for fifteen years at his brother’s monastery, Sherabling, in northern India. Lama completed the three year mind-training meditation retreat of the Kagyu lineage under the direction of the Venerable Sal Jed Rinpoche. Soon after, in 1995, he was sent to Honolulu to teach at the local dharma center.

When Lama arrived in the West he began to learn the culture and language, as well as the complexities of modern life. The merging of his formal training with the challenges of living a normal American life brought a completion and fullness to Lama’s spiritual wealth.

Lama teaches with simple methods that everyone can apply in their daily life. He is accessible, and offers regular sitting meditation as well as spiritual guidance. His fluency in English and his experience in the world make him a unique spiritual treasure for our generation.

“The Himalayan Spirit” CD is the culmination of five years of spiritual effort to bring these precious prayers to the world in a beautiful and useful format. This was one of Lama’s dreams, to make a chanting CD available, and it came to fruition through the help of his student, Reyhan (Mary Beth San Juan).

These spirit-uplifting, mind-enlightening, and soul-healing prayers have been written by great spiritual masters and chanted in the Tibetan language for centuries. The purpose of these prayers is to actualize the sacredness within oneself and to realize the sacredness in others.

The CD is highly recommended for daily spiritual practice, and contains a printable chanting book in a PDF format. The chanting book took one year to prepare, and has the Tibetan characters, transliteration and English translation.

The main body of the work is the Chenrezig (Chan Ray Zig) – Avalokiteshvara, the Boddhisattva of Compassion Sadhana. The CD also includes Guru Rinpoche Seven Line Prayer and Mantra, Chod Practice and the Heart Sutra (Prajnaparamita).

We hope you will take the time to order the CD online at www.lamagallery.com and begin enjoying the wealth of this sublime and rare offering. The Portrait of Lama Wangchuk, courtesy of Ms. Flora Ling.

Possibly originating in Egypt centuries ago, the ancient art of ear candling has been practiced in India, Tibet and Native American cultures as a method of physical and spiritual cleansing. In the process of ear candling, a special beezwax candle is gently placed in the outer ear and lit from the opposite end. The smoke created from the burning candle loosens wax and dirt from the inner ear, thus sucking it into the hollow candle, and safely cleaning

unreachable depths of the ear and sinus cavities. Ear candling not only removes wax, but also cleanses the sinus and lymphatic systems. Candling has improved many sufferers’ sinus problems, sore throats, ear aches, allergies, chronic headaches and hearing difficulties. Ear candling is also used to assist in opening the body’s spiritual centers, thus cleaning and clearing the spiritual body through the physical. Many

religions associate working with smoke with ridding yourself of emotional and spiritual blockages and with increasing energy flow. The ear contains nerve endings and acupuncture points to every other area of the mind and body. These nerve endings are connected by streams of subtle energy flow, which carry our life force energy. Therefore if our hearing is blocked or impaired, we are disconnected from that energy.

Ear candling is a gentle process and a peaceful and pleasant experience. The ear is left unharmed and many people see remarkable results in their health and spiritual being.

When Animals Ta lkThose of us who have shared our lives with an animal companion know how strong the bonds of love can be. Relationships with our animals can last longer and run much deeper than some of our human relationships. The loss of a beloved

animal companion can leave deep and unresolved feelings of guilt, sadness and intense pain. Connecting with your animal companion, whether they are living or In Spirit (deceased) can open a channel of understanding and peace and bring healing messages to your grieving heart.

My love for animals is what motivated me to walk further down my spiritual path and to become a professional animal communicator. The messages I have received from the animals have opened my heart and mind to new perspectives and possibilities that I never imagined possible. Through the wisdom of the animals with whom I communicate, I can assist others

who want a better understanding of their animal friends.

Just like the humans in our lives our animal companions have a purpose for being with us. They are here to help us grow and to continue down our spiritual path. Some animals are healers helping us through difficult times. Others are here to challenge us and teach us about patience yet others are here to guide us even from the Other Side.

Recently at an expo on Oahu, I had a session with a client whose deceased terrier brought wonderful messages of love and favorite memories to life again. During that session the client’s deceased mother came through with urgent messages about an upcoming business transaction. Her mother repeatedly showed me numbers that were upside-down. Apparently the client was about to purchase a business and was currently reviewing the business ledgers. Upon further investigation after the session she discovered the numbers were grossly inaccurate in an attempt to make the business appear more profitable than it really was.

You never know what information will come through during a session with your animal companions. They are usually very anxious to communicate their thoughts and feelings. Sometimes they provide insight into your life and other times they just want to talk about their everyday life. Whatever the messages are you can be assured they will be full of loving thoughts for you.

Perhaps the most important lesson I have learned is to be in the moment and to enjoy life now. Appreciate, love and honor your animal companions each day they are in your life. Know that your animal companions are always connected to you even in the spirit world as the bonds of love last forever.

Taking the Guess Work Out of Supplementation and Making Healthy Choices Genetic Testing Has Arrived

by Graceful Earth Inc.

34 i n s p i r a t i o n j o u r n a l

Why do we need genetic analyses? Within the scientific community, the world’s leading genetic laboratories have

been defining and decoding human genome “defects” and their relationship to many diseases. Presently, there are many such genetic distinctions or polymorphisms that have been identified to form a new modern method of DNA-diagnostics. We are now able to reveal and define unique genetic predispositions to various serious diseases for people of all ages, from infant to adult. For many years scientists have attempted to find an answer to the question: Is it possible to help those people who have defects of a particular gene? It has been determined that this is indeed possible in many cases! The products that make up a gene (called enzyme proteins) consist of various amino acids. In many cases, if there is a genetic defect present, one amino acid is replaced with another. This will likely change the metabolism of the cell and the entire body. What can we do with these results? Armed with this knowledge, doctors and patients can now make choices specific to one’s individual genetic predisposition. Evidence published in some of the best scientific and medical journals has suggested that by customizing or changing certain drug therapies, life-style habits, dietary decisions and vitamin, mineral and/or amino acid selections, these genetic defects or abnormalities can be partially compensated for, thereby helping to prevent or mitigate the effects of such illnesses in those who are at high risk.Research from some of the most prestigious medical institutes in the world has associated positive results from natural therapies involving herbs, vitamins, minerals and dietary changes. Some of these organizations include the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Division of Cell Growth and Regulation, Journal of Immunology and Harvard Medical School to name a few. Consequently, genetic tests offered direct to consumers are intended to empower individuals and their competent health care providers with the assistance they need to make informed decisions leading to healthier lifestyles and to perhaps avail them of more natural and less invasive preventive therapies.

Genetic tests are in no way an endorsement of any gene or drug-related therapies. In fact, by offering genetic and forensic tests “DTC” (direct to consumers), Graceful Earth Inc., through some of the most sophisticated science available, would like to offer people compelling reasons to be more pro-active about their health often before conditions leading to disease can occur and help them take the guesswork out of supplementation.

What could those people who already have a disease do? There are many cases in which a disease has already been diagnosed with no available treatment. In these cases, genetic analysis can first help to find the etiology or cause of a particular disease by accurately revealing its presence which could also help decide the best and most effective treatment.

Our German-Swiss laboratories perform this crucial genetic analysis and provide valuable recommendations on how to compensate for the genetic defect. This may include suggestions about diet changes and/or life-style habits to help establish the right balance in one’s metabolism and cells. If needed and requested, we will also recommend and order a specific nutritional supplement regimen from a pharmaceutical-grade factory. To perform genetic analysis only a few drops of saliva, blood or cord blood during childbirth are needed. The sample of genetic material will be stored in our laboratory for an unlimited period of time or until it later becomes necessary to order a genetic analysis for another disease. In this case you will not have to send the genetic material again. Simply place or request your order from our website by visiting Graceful Earth Inc. at www.gracefulearth.com or by calling toll free at: 1-877-697-7300.

We believe in the Hippocratic Oath of “First Do No Harm” and that the patient’s interest comes first, one individual at a time. Our scientists continue to work on genome decoding which will most likely make available new diagnostic opportunities for various diseases as they appear every year.

***Graceful Earth Inc. has no financial interest in any drug, gene therapies or research studies which may claim to have an interest in any patented therapies or drugs connected to these tests, the results, financial or otherwise.

“Future peek: Still, there’s no question that many people find the chance to peek into the medical future irresistible. … The Alzheimer’s test, sold for $150.00 by Graceful Earth of Honolulu, examines the APOE gene. One version is associated with an increased risk of Alzheimer’s. Kenneth Friedenberg, vice president of Graceful Earth, agrees that having the APOEe4 doesn’t mean that someone will get Alzheimer’s. “We’ve gotten criticism from doctors,” he says. “But I think people really want to know, especially if they’d had it in their family.” Knowing a person is at increased risk, he says, could prompt him or her to eat healthier. “What is the harm if someone starts increasing their intake of antioxidants? Or fish oils? How is that going to hurt them?”

Lipolyte is the most exciting easy fat-dissolving method available. It does away with the traditional fat-vacuum surgery and disposes of those unwanted fat inches. This patent pending formulation, lipolyte, is injected into the offending bulge; the fat is reduced. The formula especially reduces areas with stretch marks in tissues that are over-stretched during pregnancy. Lipolyte, in the form of small injections, breaks down the walls of the fat cells and kills them permanently. The fat is then flushed out of the body when you go to the lua.

Lipolyte is Phosphatidyl choline, a purified form of lecithin that causes lipase, an enzyme, to be released. Lipase, like lecithin, occurs naturally in the body. When lecithin is injected into the subcutaneous fat, it melts the fat cells, killing and totally destroying them.

Lecithin was first used in the 1950s to dial down climbing cholesterol and triglyceride numbers and is approved

for that use, according to the manufacturer, in Brazil, Germany, Italy, South America and the U.S. Like botox or aspirin, it is approved for off-label use by the FDA.

A Brazilian dermatologist, Patricia Rittes, M.D., widely credited with pioneering the treatment called lipodissolve, has helped reincarnate the drug as a pathway to physical body sculpting. After experimental use as an injectable lipodissolve by doctors such as Rittes overseas, it started to make its way to mainland USA. I brought it to Hawaii well over five years ago. Thanks to the off-label usage, a few surgery-shy, but eager, patients are dissolving their eye bags, chin fat, upper arm fat, abdominal and thigh fat pockets, love handles, back and buttock and other fat pockets everywhere.

So how does lipolyte work? Depending on the area and the desired results, a patient gets lipolyte injections at the site, spaced over the course of a few weeks. A very effective topical anesthetic is used at the injection site. One may experience some side effects like mild swelling and bruising or itching at the injection site. The patient waits a week and goes back in for another round

of injections. After all the treatments are completed and the swelling subsides, one finds a new, fat free area, thanks to the fat dissolving properties of lipolyte. This fat melting will continue for up to four months. Anecdotal evidence shows it can take an inch or more of fat off your waist, arms or thighs, flatten under-eye bags and eliminate the chin wattle. Lecithin injections may also help with cellulite, the puckering orange-peel skin that plagues 9 out of 10 women. We inject lipolyte to dissolve this stubborn fat that often shows up on the back, thighs and buttocks.

No official protocols have been established, so how many shots one needs depends upon the desired results.

Larger areas will take more sessions. Lipolyte will dissolve fat a little over a half inch to an inch at a time.

We are offering this service to Hawaii at our Waikiki office. For more information or for a free consultation call 732-0888.

Sheila and David are standing at the front of the church before their friends and families and exchanging vows. They are filled with passion and promise, looking to the future, certain that together they can meet life’s challenges and fulfill their hearts. In most instances they are sure they know one another. Little do they realize an unseen but fully functional entity is there with them, and that this unseen entity will play an important role in their life together, whether or not they ever become aware of this.

Every day couples stand before their faith communities or their civil officials and commit to journey together in life. It is a rare couple, indeed, who realizes that in their joining (in fact in the joining of any two who are committed to an intention: business partners, parents and children, etc.) a new entity is created, a meta-being, a being with its own characteristics, challenges and blessings. Without an understanding of these transpersonal dynamics, we join and live in a state of relative unawareness in our relations, disoriented within the challenges and unavailing of the graces that inhabit the meta-realm. This is a realm many refer to as the realm of “energetics” and it is becoming more and more important, as human consciousness develops, to understand and master this realm.

So, what tools do we have to illuminate the meta-realm? In my life, I have encountered a few tools for understanding the alchemy of relationships (the enneagram comes to mind). But I have found no tool as powerful as astrology for revealing and illuminating the transpersonal entity that is born when two souls join in purpose. I am speaking here specifically of the astrological composite chart.

Most of us are aware of the birth chart. Some of us are aware of transit astrology, the study of the current astrological “weather report.” An even smaller group is aware that synastry astrology illuminates inter-personal interaction. And, finally, far fewer are aware of the existence of composite charts, which depict the meta-entity, as distinct from looking at the interactions between the individuals.

Let’s look at Sheila and David with the composite chart in mind. Sheila has her Sun in Gemini, her Moon in Aquarius and Leo rising. So, she is oriented toward teaching, talking and networking, with a cool and impersonal emotional nature, and an exuberant, fun and bright outward presentation. David has his Sun in Libra, his Moon in Aries, with Libra rising. He is a peace-keeper, who loves harmony, with a hardy emotional nature, and a charming, attractive and gracious outward presentation. In the simplest astrological terms, they are likely to get along because both their suns are in air signs. They will love sharing ideas, talking and keeping informed together. Their moons are also similar, in that both placements prefer “not to go there,” when it comes to emotion. Their outward presentations are well harmonized, as both are social and attractive. (Keep in mind that for the purposes of this brief article, I am being very simplistic.)

Sheila and David’s meta-entity, as depicted in the composite chart, has quite different resonances than they have as individuals. The composite Sun in Leo is a familiar flavor for them both, being about joy and caring and shining. The composite Moon in Pisces will throw both of them for a loop, until they come to understand that their

meta-entity is calling them to open and delve into emotional experience, expression and sensitivity. Finally, with the composite Ascendant in Virgo, these two social butterflies are being asked to move into service. Without the composite chart as a guide, Sheila and David must make these discoveries intuitively and through trial and error. Some couples never access the meta-realm and, hence, fail to fulfill more than personal drives. This restriction of intention, application and understanding can leave us feeling empty, our souls dry.

As an astrologer, I marvel at the soul’s ability to make its purposes clear through the various astrological tools I use and share with my clients. The composite chart is a powerful tool that can illuminate the meta-realm of any committed relationship.

To express my commitment to the empowerment of relationships, I set up a company, WeddingStarZ, to provide wedding couples (and all those seeking powerful psychological tools for committed relationships) with complete and beautifully presented profiles, including birth charts, synastry analysis and complete discussion of the composite chart of the meta-realm. Please consider this service next time you want to give a wedding gift or to provide any two people with a powerful and useful tool for illuminating the meta realm of their relationship.

The Unseen Member of the Wedding: Astrology’s Composite Chart

I hadn’t taken a sleeping pill in five days. Somehow I’d grown oblivious to the anxieties that waited, numbered tickets in hand, to keep me awake. What happened?

A week ago I’d started a live-foods cleanse with Kathy Matara, Ph.D., Certified Live-foods Consultant (Ann Wigmore Institute) and creator of the Katika Internal Cleanse Program. I asked her about my anxiety. “Could this cleanse be helping me sleep?”

“People who shift their physiology through deep cleansing,” Kathy answered, “usually see positive changes pretty quickly.”

I’d noticed that; my jeans snapped easier, my writer’s

brain was “on” more than “off.” But I’d taken sleeping pills for the better part of a year now. It seemed hard to believe this cleanse was responsible for my anxiety-free nights.

Kathy explained, “Live foods retain their inherent life force. When you cook food, you kill the life force along with all the enzymes and most of the nutrition. By eating live foods, the life force from that food is assimilated into every cell of your body.” She smiled and said, “It’s not surprising that you’re sleeping better. Your cells aren’t filled with anxiety now, they’re filled with life.”

Over the next several weeks Kathy showed me how easy it was to prepare live foods. She told me that ingesting a food’s life force created “happy cells.”

I agreed—my body radiated an inner bliss similar to when I meditated. Kathy reminded me that Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, believed our bodies contain all the tools for self-healing. By clogging them with processed and cooked foods, we play Russian roulette with our health.

Inspired by Kathy’s knowledge and with the skills she taught me, I added live foods to my diet, creating tasty and healthy meals. My body grew stronger; my anxiety stayed away—until the day I found myself justifying macaroni and cheese. As I slid back to cooked foods, my joy diminished. One night I reached for sleeping pills before stopping, aghast. I believe what stopped me was the life force flickering in my cells. I grabbed my notes from Kathy’s cleanse,

made a late-night salad and started soaking seeds and nuts. My cells began a “happy dance” and I fell asleep without drugs. The bliss was back.

Kathy’s next live-foods free introductory lecture is offered on April 8th from 3:00-5:00. I love this lecture, it is informative and awakening. Her next Katika Internal Cleanse is scheduled for April 15 th. For information on the free lecture and the actual cleanse, call Kathy at 808-822-4206 or 808-652-9462 . If you’ve ever struggled with losing weight or if you’ve lost weight but always gained it back, dieting and exercise may not be the only answers to your weight problem. If this is the case, it is important for you to read on.

Losing weight is also about identifying and eliminating the mental, emotional, spiritual and subconscious (MESS) reasons that make you fat in the first place and keep you fat regardless of the enormous efforts and the numerous attempts you make to follow a diet and exercise program. Dieting may fix your weight problem only partially and temporarily. If you do not let go of the many emotional reasons which prevent you from losing weight and keeping it off, you will have an extremely hard time losing weight and, if you succeed, you will gain the weight back.

I tried hundreds of diets, over and over. After each diet, I

always regained the weight and often even more. Sound familiar? On a conscious level, I wanted to lose weight and be thin, but on a subconscious level, I did not want any of it. Let me define conscious and subconscious in simple terms: A conscious thought is one you are aware of; a subconscious thought one that you are not aware of.

Which one do you think has the decision-making power, the conscious or the subconscious? It would seem logical to us that the conscious mind would have all the power. However, research has shown that 90 % of everything we do comes from our subconscious. Basically 90% of our life is governed by the subconscious and only 10% is governed by the conscious. The conscious mind never wins. The subconscious mind makes us do whatever we do.

Both the conscious and subconscious can affect your weight loss. On the conscious level, you might be really motivated. You know that if you stick to a good diet and to a good exercise routine for enough weeks, you will lose weight and become thinner.

The conscious mind supports you; it leads you to eat healthy food and drink a lot of water; it makes you go to the gym, exercise and sweat off those extra pounds; it helps you be disciplined and really focused on getting what you want. The problem, though, is that the conscious mind only produces 10% of your results. The subconscious mind produces 90%. If the subconscious mind, for some whatever reasons, does not support your weight loss, you will have a very hard time losing weight. The subconscious mind will block your progress by blocking your weight loss, creating a weight loss plateau, and making you gain the weight back. You need to take care of the nutritional side, but most importantly, you must take care of your subconscious and all the blocks preventing you from having the best body you can have.

So, what can you do? You simply need to change the subconscious programming which blocks your weight loss by letting go of your subconscious thoughts, beliefs and fears. For example, “I always fail at dieting” is a limiting belief. “I cannot lose

weight” is another. According to the law of attraction, if you truly believe that you always fail at dieting, you will always fail. In my book Fat No More!, I share a list of over 100 beliefs, thoughts and fears potentially affecting your weight loss, along with simple, inexpensive yet powerful techniques to help you let go of them.

It is time that you let go of these limiting beliefs and create new healthier ones so you can easily lose weight and reach your weight loss goals!

Real Help for Your Health Has ArrivedBy Angelo Russo Ph.D.If you are like me , you want what is best for your health without having to put a lot of effort and time into it. I have tried several promising and well-hyped solutions to general health concerns only to discover that they didn’t work or the side effects were unacceptable. This experience has made me more skeptical by wanting to see the scientific evidence supporting these claims and not rely on “testimonials” concerning a product’s efficacy. So it was while in this state of mind that

I was introduced to Natural Cellular Defense (NCD), a natural occurring type of Zeolite created by volcanic lava and seawater. This particular Zeolite has been used for more than 800 years in traditional medicine to improve general health. Now through patented technology and an activation process created by Waiora, it is being marketed as a dietary supplement for human detoxification. There is no surprise that we are swimming in a sea of heavy metals, pesticides and toxins found throughout our environment: in the air we breath, the water we drink, and the foods we eat. Simply stated, by removing heavy metals, pesticides and other toxins, as well as its effect

of increasing immune system function, alkalizing the blood, blocking viral replication and neutralizing free radicals, liquid Zeolite allows the body to naturally heal itself. I could attest as to how well NCD works, but you need to discover for yourself by reviewing the completed, as well as ongoing scientific research studies on NCD which can be accessed at the website listed below.

rent a nice house for $25 a month. I signed up with a friend of mine. I had to prove I was at least 50% Hawaiian, and somehow ended up being considered to be 62% Hawaiian, although I never knew how they calculated it. I was so fortunate. Then in 1985, we were each awarded land. My friend and I had the same vision about what we wanted to do with our land; we wanted to work there together with our children. And that is exactly what happened!

The first thing I did when I moved onto my land in 1985 was build a steam room like Aunty Margaret’s. I invited the kupuna to come to use the steam room and have lomi lomi, all for free. The sad thing was that by then Hawaiians were so shy. They had a problem going into the steam room and disrobing. I called it the missionary disease “shame and pain.” But you know it did not take them very long to get used to it. Once they started coming every week, they got over the shame and pain. After they had been coming for a while, their friends would look at them and say, “You know you have been looking so good”, and they would say, “Well I go to Aunty Angeline’s.” The friends would say, “You go to that place where you sit in those rooms naked?” The kupuna were so sweet and they got well so fast; they felt so good, they just did not stay sick.

It was wonderful. I had so many people who helped me. At first we burned untreated wood to steam the rocks, but soon we found a wonderful steamer. It cost $10,000, and in order to pay for it, I started a steam club. People paid me $500 for a lifetime membership in the club. I also would have Thai dinners at night on the deck to raise money to purchase the steamer. It was a community effort - many people helped with catering and customers seemed to come from everywhere. Friends came and played music and we sang; people brought their own wine; we had torches. We had sit-down dinners on Friday and Saturday nights for around three months, and we raised the money to buy our first steamer. This was all around the mid 1980s.

It was women power that built the spa. It was so wonderful and joyful. We all felt so good, like “This is what we wanted to do in our lives.” We dug 98 post holes for the deck, and after we built the deck, we

built the back room with the kitchen and laundry room and a bunk room. We had 10 double bunk beds here, and people would come on the two solstices and the equinox. They all did colon cleanses with the sea water flush. They would stay for 10 days and sit on buckets. They came from all over the world, and they became the best of friends. They cleansed out everything – all their problems.

We began to have classes taught by my kahuna (expert; in this sense a spiritual teacher/practitioner), Ed Kaiwi. He had been in Vietnam where he lost an eye. It was like he had died, and his grandparents had come to him, taken him up to the heiau on Kalalea mountain and said to him, “This is where you are going to do your work. This is your heiau.” It had been a women’s birthing heiau. So he came to Anahola and started teaching huna (healing). Someone brought him to meet me here. I was so delighted to meet a real kahuna that when he came, I threw flowers at his feet. That made a great hit, and we have been friends ever since. Ed measured time during the summer solstice, the winter solstice, and the equinox. He tracked the sun’s travels, and he measured time by how the sun fell on the standing pillars here at the heaiau.

He understood this timeless place.

I told Ed about my dream of creating a healing center and my vision that healing is about

supporting wellness, and he helped me. He sent his best student to help me. Often, people would finish their work and go to the heiau, and Ed would teach them. He has been a real gift for our process here. Every time he came, there would be some magical healing. He would play his nose

flute, and people would have wonderful healing journeys inside themselves. We helped a lot of people who were addicted to heroin and other drugs. The cleansing removed the cravings for whatever they were attached to. Ed is hard to find now. He calls his work ghostbusting. He ghostbusts demons.

In 1997, ten years ago, my body burned out and I had a stroke. My son, Michael, who was a chef in San Francisco, came here and cooked for us, and then my

a grandmother, and I travel to grandmother conferences all over the islands. When the grandmothers get together, all the families come with their children and they dance. I’d love to see beautiful lodges, beautiful dance floors where we can sing and play our instruments. There are so many dancers on this island, and lots of music of every kind. This is a way of expressing love.

Hawaiians are very sensitive. We are striving to preserve our culture and to flow the spirit of aloha to our descendants and to everyone who comes to us. This takes courage, courage to speak the truth, to stand up for who we are. Through my family’s work we are encouraging our people to realize that they can use our traditional healing work and the values of our culture to help this planet survive. My Uncle Arthur, who was a state senator and a judge, is a royal Hawaiian. He said something that I think is important: “If the Hawaiian people knew who they really are, where they really come from, they couldn’t live with themselves.” By that, he meant we come from the Gods, and it takes much courage to live with the God self, to stand up for your beliefs. The only person I know that has that that courage is my friend, Ed. But I know that there is a very big spirit here assisting us that comes from this land, from the energy and from the people.

We must not lose the power to speak the truth, to love and be loved, to validate and to be validated. We can do this if we are conscious. This is why we are so lucky to have the kupuna. They recognized what was happening, what was going to happen to the children; they prepared for it. All it will take now is for loving, courageous people to stand up for the truth. We just need the courage to do it. I know that it is coming. This is my cultural work, for my family. I don’t know any more pono (righteous) service that I can give other than what I am doing now. If I find something better, then I will do it.

granddaughter Malia graduated from high school and came over. Michael and Malia helped a lot, and my partner, Anne, helped me. I had been so much about giving, but I had not been good at receiving (I am a recovering Catholic). What I have found is that you have to receive to keep giving, otherwise you burn out.

We continue to do the cleansing and the lomi, although now is harder to find the traditional herbs that used to grow here, because herbicides are killing off the medicinal herbs. I have fallen in love with lomi. It is true spiritual work, tapping into people’s spirits and letting them know how important it is that loving touch heals.

Hula is another part of our native family and ancestors’ traditions. Hula today is an expression of love, of aloha. As I see it, lomi is the extension of hula. My granddaughter, Malia, is very committed to hula, and I know that with her lomi and her hula, she will probably be a kumu teaching hula some day right here. I am so fortunate to have this family legacy and my family is wonderful. We have our bumps, but I am here because they love me, and I am here to love them. I will always perpetuate this in some way. I also am surrounded by extended family, and my friends are all part of it.

It is interesting that the people who are coming to the spa now say that spirit sent them. They have healed themselves from demons and addictions, and they are seeking a more spiritual guidance. They spend time with Ed and he helps them a lot. There are not as many people in need of help with their tumors or cancers or whatever as there were before. People came in the beginning for the cleanse, but eventually they healed themselves and they started coming back just for the spirituality. The difference now is that they are physically well.

The health spa name is a legacy for Queen Liliuokalani, who called her own garden, Muolaulani. Her plants were her children, and here at my spa, this, too, is a place where “young buds bloom.” I had a wonderful channeling from Liliuokalani. The only poem I ever wrote came from her. Our people loved their queen, and my family all were royalists, part of Liliuokalani’s kingdom. My grandparents taught me great love and respect for my ancestors. The alii (royalty) were such beautiful people. They came here on boats, led by the stars and they lived here for thousands of years before the white man came. They really loved the land and they were good stewards. The white men have not been such good stewards. We are living to get the kingdom back. I am doing loving service for our alii, and I feel that I answer to them.

I know that this means honoring our culture and our land in all that we do. All Hawaiians are related to one another through the land, and aloha is the expression of all life. How you treat your body, how you treat the land, how we treat each other - these are all interconnected. It is very important to be conscious of these things. As long as you have land it will sustain you, and you need to sustain it. When I got my land, it was acidic and full of chemicals from growing pineapples, and it was very hard to grow food. It was like a desert. But we cared for the land and we made the desert bloom. Everything growing here was planted by us. With the help of my son, Steve, we started an orchard of avocado, citrus, bananas and other fruits. We don’t use sprays or chemicals. It is all just natural.

We desperately need to learn to love our bodies and to love everybody else’s. There are all kinds of medicine and drugs, but your body craves aloha. It is the only body that you have to express yourself - to dance, to sing and to love with. When you fill yourself up with aloha, you have so much to share with everyone who crosses your path. Love your body, take of yourself, love plants and animals, love your neighbors; love and take care of the aina (land). The aina feeds us and we feed the aina; we are the aina. That is what we need to do.

There are so many people who need to be touched and there are so many ways to touch, to love one another. I have a great desire to start dance halls in every town on every island because people love to dance, and we don’t have any place to dance, other than smoky bars where kids are not allowed. I am
