November Music is entering a new era. The festival will last 10 days from this year onwards, starting with a Bosch Requiem on the first Friday in November. It ends on the second Sunday of the month with an extraordinary closing concert (as per the tradition) where Dutch and international musicians meet. That the festival opens with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra (the very best symphony orchestra in the world according to many) and closes with pianist Rembrandt Frerichs’ trio alongside Cello8ctet Amsterdam and the renowned Iranian Tar player Hossein Alizadeh says a lot about our philosophy and the scope of our ambitions. And there will be 75 different concerts throughout the festival including premieres, special collaborations, international top musicians as well as a focus on fresh talent.
Various leitmotivs run through the programme. We are marking the 500th anniversary of the death of Hieronymus Bosch with several new productions including an opera. A large number of early music ensembles will play contemporary works at the festival. This goes to show that early and modern music are closer in spirit than people tend to think. Plus, virtually all major Dutch new music ensembles will make an appearance and are no less than four composers in focus. November Music 2016 will be memorable – and festive!
We look forward to meeting you at the festival’s 24th edition!

The year 2016 was the year of Hieronymus Bosch and its musical pinnacle is the Bosch Requiem, which has been newly written by the prominent German composer Detlev Glanert and performed by the illustrious Concertgebouw Orkest with the Groot Omroepkoor as well as top soloists, such as David Wilson-Johnson (baritone, voice), Aga Mikolaj (soprano) and Gerhard Siegel (tenor).
Composer Detlev Glanert is fascinated by the ominous and animalistic aspects of human nature. His new work plumbs the depths of painter Hieronymus Bosch’s dark soul. He derived inspiration from classical requiem texts and the manuscript collection of the intoxicating Carmina Burana. The carillon of the Church of St. John (Sint-Janskathedraal) will play composer Anthony Fiumara’s Souling prior to the concert.
This concert is part of November Music 2016 with the kind cooperation
of the Jheronimus Bosch 500 Foundation.

The versatile Dudok Quartet throws in its lot with accordionist Vincent van Amsterdam at November Music. Together they present a varied programme of works for string quartet and accordion, including A4 by the Dutch composer Bernard van Beurden who died recently and parts of Fetzen by German composer Wolfgang Rihm. The finale is Sofia Goebaidoelina’s Silenzio for accordion, violin, and cello. She is capable like no other of creating a tranquil sound meditation.

Asko|Schönberg has been invited, with three other European ensembles for new music, to participate in the CONNECT project, which facilitates dialogues between the public, performers, and makers. The performances can take place in any social context; from concert hall to festival site.
This first edition sees Christian Mason and Huang Ruo, two young up-and-coming composers. They have been commissioned to write new work. Each has opted, in his own inimitable way, to let the audience interact with the Asko|Schönberg musicians. Theun Mosk is the scenographer.

Baroque musicians engaging in a passionate flirt with musical innovators? Everything is possible in the universe that the Belgian B’Rock orchestra inhabits. Past and present merge effortlessly and with all respect due. Three composers wrote a new concerto for the ensemble’s Baroque 360° programme. Saliently, these contemporary baroque concertos are in a tiny format. The five strings and the basso continuo meet three extraordinary solo instrumentalists one by one: Naomi Sato (Japanese sho), Matt Wright (live electronics), and Deborah York (vocals).
The contemporary composers who put their best baroque foot forward are Wim Henderickx (B), Matt Wright (UK), and Reza Namavar. Louis Andriessen’s exceptionally beautiful Miserere winds up this unique programme.

Various eminent musicians from the Far East, Central Asia, Europe, and the Middle East have put their heads together in order to undertake an unparalleled journey around the world. Atlas Ensemble does not play very often. Therefore, this concert of Nomaden, composed by Joël Bons, is not to be missed. All the more so as famous French cellist Jean-Guihen Queyras will join the amazing collective.
The Atlas Ensemble play string instruments from all corners of the world such as the sarangi (Dhruba Ghosh), kemençe (Neva Özgen) and the erhu (Yang Xue). Various wind and plucked instruments lend the composition even richer hues. Raphaela Danksagmülle plays the duduk; both Naomi Sato and Wu Wei – from Japan and China, respectively – are mouth organ specialists.

Jazz from another planet. Or perhaps ‘naive computer jazz’ as Mitchel van Dinther aka Jameszoo describes the genre. His debut album Fool was released on Flying Lotus’ internationally renowned Brainfeeder label and created a real buzz for the Dutch DJ/producer. Jameszoo was working with a variegated cast of leading musical characters including jazz pianist Steve Kuhn (John Coltrane, Stan Getz) and bassist Stephen Bruner (Thundercat). The resulting album is brimming with catchy mixed-genre jazz explorations that break new ground.
Jameszoo will introduce his latest quintet to ‘s Hertogenbosch (his home city) for the first time at November Music 2016. He brings along keyboard player Niels Broos, drummer Julian Sartorius, bassist Frans Petter Eldh (Marius Neset Quartet), and saxophonist John Dikeman.

The Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds will hand the prestigious Noord-Brabant Music Award to trumpet player Eric Vloeimans at November Music 2016. ‘Eric Vloeimans thinks about music rather than genres. He constantly enters into collaborations that push back frontiers without compromising his individuality. Vloeimans has reinvented himself time and again,’ according to the jury.
Vloeimans was born and bred in ‘s Hertogenbosch. He plays with long-standing collaborators the Marinierskapel (Band of the Netherlands Royal Marines) at the presentation ceremony. Together they perform sections of their joint concert programme Around the World in 90 Minutes. In addition, the VIB (Very Important Brassband) under conductor Marc van Kessel will play pieces from Vloeimans’ play-along sheet music book Horn of Plenty.

Can music change political hearts and minds (for the better)? In Freedom (o)r Speech the Belgian ensemble I Soloisti del Vento will play three political compositions. The Belgian writer and poet Dimitri Verhulst wrote a text that is read by actor Jan Decleir.
Louis Andriessen designed his 20th century composition for large ensemble, De Staat, which was partly based on Plato’s The State, as a protest against totalitarianism through energetic rhythms and refractory chords. Mauricio Kagel makes political populism look foolish in Der Tribun, using military brass and libertine music. Dimitri Verhulst’s topical text, featuring Jan Decleir as contemporary demagogue, hails the dawn of a new political era. I Soloisti del Vento, the Scottish Red Note Ensemble, and the Norwegian vocal ensemble Song Circus juxtapose both political statements with a piece created by Irish composer John de Simone.

Deep down in Kruithuis’ labyrinth vaults, any adventurous festival visitors can again go on an expedition. Artists from several countries present sound installations that are customized for the atmospheric historic space. The curator of this year’s expedition is the Italian/Dutch sound artist Matteo Marangoni who is also a member of Instrument Inventors Initiative (iii). This years participating soundartists are Jo Cailmo, Pierre Bastien, Gabey TJon a Tham, Yolanda Uriz and Alex Andropolous. Sound art pioneer Horst Rickels will supervise the explorative journey. Once it has been completed, Kruithuis will remain open for an extra hour so visitors can experience the individual installations at their leisure.

The subject of this poetic installation is remembered sound or the lack thereof. What sounds are associated with the important moments in our lives? Soundtracks is the brainchild of Belgian sound artist Stijn Demeulenaere who has assembled personal memories in a very special sound archive. Visitors are invited to open preserving jars to discover – and add to – the captured sound recollections.

A performance which gets under your skin – almost literally. A form of music theatre that provokes and bewitches the senses is right up theatre maker Boukje Schweigman’s ally. This time Schweigman& collaborates with composer Arnoud Noordegraaf and Slagwerk Den Haag. Huid (Skin) is about touch. What does being touched involve at a physical or emotional level? The audience can explore and rediscover the visceral pleasures of touching and feeling.
Arnoud Noordegraaf’s multimedia performances have been staged during earlier editions of November Music and at the Holland Festival. Slagwerk Den Haag was the resident ensemble at November Music 2014. And Schweigman would not be Schweigman if the audience was prohibited from playing a spectacular leading part at the end of the performance.

The US elections will be reaching boiling point on this night and there is no doubt that these moments will enter the history books whatever the outcome. Will good old Hillary make the grade or will the unpredictable demagogue Trump manage to win? The US media titans go all out. Composer Jacob ter Veldhuis (JacobTV) loves the bustling frenzy of the US media. His reality opera The News gives voice to everyday madness. All of the actors make an appearance at an unstoppable pace – from horny politicians to televangelists, OTT movie stars to self-important TV journalists. JacobTV’s The News is as topical as it gets. Just the thing for Fontys student ensemble f.c. Jongbloed under musical director Aart Strootman.

A special programme dedicated to Nik Bärtsch, the Swiss composer and pianist who has created an idiosyncratic sound universe in recent decades through a combination of grooving rhythms and minimal music. His music starts off slowly and intensifies as time goes by. Tonight is Bärtsch’s first performance in the Netherlands with Mobile Extended, his regular quartet plus strings.
‘Continuum is a sonic sculpture; the contour and form are always paramount. You can relax to the album’s low-key, subliminal music, but best keep your eyes wide open, as this is an album of edgy beauty’ (****) Downbeat
The concert starts with a unique ad hoc ensemble as Bärtsch shares the stage with TEMKO, a Dutch group with among others guitarist Aart Strootman, that first saw the light of day at November Music a few years ago. The quartet plays a maverick mix of chamber music, minimal music, and polyrhythmic rock.

Hell on Earth … Does it exist? The answer is obvious for those who watch the news and current affairs programmes. Prophet of doom Hieronymus Bosch would have had tons of inspiration in this day and age. The Dutch premiere of music theatre production Bosch Beach sees Portuguese composer Vasco Mendonça, Belgian writer Dimitri Verhulst, and ensemble Asko|Schönberg searching for a ‘False Paradise’ (i.e. the translated title of a novel about Bosch) on the planet Earth.
The subject is right up popular author Verhulst’s street. His mesmerizing libretto turns a holiday beach on the ‘refugee island’ of Lampedusa into a hellish place where moral doubts abound. Director Kris Verdonck gives shape to this hidden modern Inferno. Marion Tassou (soprano), Rodrigo Ferreira (countertenor) and Damien Pass (baritone) are the soloists.

Ralph van Raat throws himself into the little heard piano repertory of the doyen of Dutch composers, Theo Loevendie. The piano pieces that he has written down the years offer unique insights into how he developed as a composer. Toccata, an early work, shows a passion for rhythm and there are echoes of Ravel and Stravinsky. Strides marks the start of Loevendie’s distinctive symbiosis between jazz and composed music, influenced by the ‘stride piano’ (an early jazz style that evolved in Harlem in the 1920s). Subsequently, Loevendie opted for a freer palette that is brimming with virtuoso ideas and accessible playfulness. Loevendie is unparalleled when it comes to integrating aspects of jazz and world music.
*A public interview with composer Theo Loevendie will take place after
the concert.

US composer and pianist Lera Auerbach (1973) is one of the fastest rising stars in the field of composition. Her expressive music fuses the classical tradition with modern sensibilities. She has been working on her dream project 72 Angels for years. Nederlands Kamerkoor and the Raschèr Saxophone Quartet will join forces at November Music to play the world premiere of this monumental work.
72 Angels takes its inspiration from the Kabbalah. The mystic and ancient Judaic teachings refer to the 72 angels that links the finite universe with eternity. 72 Angels consists of 72 preludes lasting a single minute, which each represent a single entity. Auerbach combines popular melodies with a classic composing style and makes it look deceptively easy.

A crazy trip through exciting rock music and ground-breaking modern sound magic. Professor Bad Trip was written by the Italian composer Fausto Romitelli (1963-2004). It counts as a musical milestone of the early 21st century. ‘The Doors meet Pierre Boulez’, as the LA Times described it. Romitelli’s piece has never before been seen and heard in its entirety in the Netherlands; something which Ensemble Klang XL is about to change. Professor Bad Trip evokes the effects of a bad LSD trip. Psychedelic rock as well as the books written by surrealist Henri Michaux inspired Romitelli to create this work.

Writing music for the Academy Award-winning film The Revenant and a tête-à-tête with Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood? It is perhaps not wholly surprising that Stargaze is regarded as one of the most adventurous European outfits as two very talented Dutch musicians are permanent members of the ensemble. Namely, guitarist Aart Strootman and horn player Morris Kliphuis. November Music commissioned both to compose new work for this special Stargaze programme.
Aart Strootman wrote the song cycle Songs From a Dark Past. Morris Kliphuis (Kapok, formerly Kyteman Orchestra) bounces the sound of analogue synthesizers against an ensemble of strings, woodwind, brass, drums, and singing. Also on the programme are a performance of new work by composer Greg Saunier as well as Deerhoof Chamber Variations that was included in the eponymous album that Stargaze released last year, with a leading role for vocalist Nora Fischer.

Jazz pianist Rembrandt Frerichs goes exploring with the brilliant violinist Liza Ferschtman. She is a classical juggernaut who collaborated with conductors such as Jaap van Zweden and Leonard Slatkin. Frerichs and Ferschtman share an intense interest in improvisational techniques and the mathematic beauty found in Bach’s music. Together with bassist Tony Overwater and percussionist Vinsent Planjer, Ferschtman and Frerichs merge the worlds of improvisation and composition in an entirely natural manner. They use their own compositions as well as Bach’s indestructible work.

Contemporary composers are influenced more than ever by the luminous sounds of the baroque period. Holland Baroque knows that baroque music is a goldmine for composers, avant-gardists, adventurers, and realists. Recordist Erik Bosgraaf and Holland Baroque invited composer Theo Loevendie to write a concerto for recorder and baroque ensemble as part of the Perfect Strings programme.
As well as a premiere of Loevendie’s new piece the ensemble plays the much-loved Fratres by Estonian composer Arvo Pärt and Bach’s Third Brandenburg Concert. Erik Bosgraaf will also perform the succinct and wonderful The Conspiracy of Claudius Civilis by Willem Jeths, the Dutch Composer Laureate.

Hieronymus Bosch and Philip II go all out in this latest performance by multidisciplinary artist, theatre maker, and universalist Dick Verdult. He calls the Spanish king to account for removing many magnificent works by Bosch from the Dutch Province of Brabant where they were created. As far as Verdult is concerned, the music theatre production Philips de Tweede will provide the Royal with the opportunity to redeem himself. “He will hopefully begin to understand what Brabant means in the secular domain of modern sorcery,” argues Verdult. There is even an electronics giant in Eindhoven (Brabant) which has been named after the damnable Philip the Second ….
Dick Verdult is a man of numerous disciplines: TV, films, pirate radio, performance, novellas, sculpture, drawings. An earlier edition of November Music premiered his Dahlia performance about Hieronymus Bosch.

Jeroen van Vliet & Colin VallonTwo leading European pianists will take off together for the first time. Dutchman Jeroen van Vliet and his Swiss colleague Colin Vallon are both lauded for their adventurous lyricism.
Yuri Honing Trio ft. Mathias EickTenor saxophonist Yuri Honing plays an idiosyncratic role in Dutch jazz with his deep sound and gradually evolving dark melodies. The Norwegian trumpet player Mathias Eick is a prominent European jazz musician on ECM Records. His extended melodic lines seem predestined for the Yuri Honing Quartet with Wolfert Brederode (piano), Joost Lijbaart (drums), and Guli Gudmundsson (bass).
Rabih Abou-Khalil TrioThe Lebanese oud player Abou-Khalil fuses different musical traditions with masterly skill ranging from European classical music to refined and lyrical Arabic styles. The drive of modern jazz and rock is never far away from his energetic improvisations. Abou-Khalil plays with accordionist Luciano Biondini and percussionist Jarrod Cagwin.
The full-length Colours of Improvisation programme has been put together by November Music. It features special collaborations and musicians who operate in areas where jazz meets world music.

A Requiem for the Dead by Germany’s most famous composer, Wolfgang Rihm. His imposing hour-long piece Et Lux for vocal ensemble and string quartet plunges listeners into an ocean of sweet memories, mild reflections, and hot-blooded desire. The composition focuses on the eternal light.
The Belgian Huelgas Ensemble under passionate conductor Paul van Nevel will play Et Lux together with the German Minguet Quartett. Their recording of Et Lux for the renowned ECM label has earned plaudits around the world. This will be their first performance of the work in the Netherlands.
‘Rihm took the title Et Lux from the line ‘et lux perpetua luceat eis’ (‘may everlasting light shine upon them’). To Rihm these words are a consolation but also deeply disquieting. He has forgeda masterpiece from those tensions’ (*****) de Volkskrant

A contemplative choral ritual that needs to be experienced live. The Estonian composer Arvo Pärt uses the monumental choral work Kanon Pokajanen to immerse his listeners in a serene, archaic sound universe inspired by the penitential psalms found in early Slavic-Christian manuscripts. Pärt is really moved by the texts of this canon. The words are allocated their own sounds and melodic line. A unique meditative pit stop just before the busy festival weekend.

A chance to experience dynamic sound experiments, liberating walls of noise, astute improvisations, and breath-taking installations. With its intimate, solemn atmosphere and small hidden rooms Kruithuis is an ideal environment for the Plug fans among us. Sound artist Thomas Ankersmit pays homage to Dick Raaijmakers, the Dutch pioneer of electronic music. Ankersmit, an alto saxophonist by trade, has become an expert at creating wondrous sound universes on the Serge Analogue Modular Synthesizer. Earlier, he collaborated with drone composer Phill Niblock, Valerio Tricoli, and Kevin Drumm. The programme also features the Belgian musician, guitarist, and film maker Jochem Baelus aka Slumberland, who presents his solo project, which is brimming with (extra) ordinary sound objects – from hair driers and musical sewing machines to mouth organs and kalimbas made out of knitting needles. The evening kicks off with an expedition that takes the audience around all of the installations, plus performances by Jo Cailmo and Pierre Bastien.

Last year’s astonishing November Music performances by Quatuor Diotima were very moreish. Now the French ensemble is back with new quartet pieces by Enno Poppe and Annelies van Parys, two European top composers. November Music was one of the organizations to commission the German composer Enno Poppe to write Buch in memory of French composer Pierre Boulez who died earlier this year.
Poppe’s quartet is an ode to Boulez’s ‘fantastic and overwhelming’ Livre Pour Quatuor (1948/1960). Just before Boulez’ death, the Quatuor Diotima had worked on a revision of this classical quartet. It will play several movements of the pioneering work. The quartet also premieres a piece by Annelies Van Parys. She is from Belgium where she is one of today’s most successful composers.

Please enter composer Nicoline Soeter’s Wunderkammer (Cabinet of Curiosities). She took her inspiration from the wondrous collections assembled by the 17th-century Dutch botanist, anatomist, and zoologist Frederik Ruysch. The result is a new music theatre performance for ensemble Vonk. The multifaceted soprano Rianne Wilbers, who sings Soeter’s mesmerizing texts, plays a leading part. Saxophonist Tom Sanderman, clarinettist Erwin Muller, plus percussionists Reggy van Bakel and special guest Mei-Yi Lee accompany her. Theatre maker Marc van Vliet came up with a really strong image – the musicians are safely tucked away in glass display cases like exhibits in a museum.

Aleppo... the Syrian metropolis that goes back thousands of years does barely exist any longer. Together with musicians who fled Syria, Merlijn Twaalfhoven (composer) and Abdelkader Benali (author) have created a mini-opera based on postcards from Aleppo that were written by the people who remain there. A poetic and intense tale of everyday events in a war-stricken city that suffers devastating hardships.

False Memories is a performance with vocal components at the interface of experimental rock, electronics, and contemporary music. It finds itself somewhere between Björk and Portishead’s experimental pop and the composed folk fantasies created by Luciano Berio and Kurt Weill. British artist A.R. Hopwood’s variegated collection of texts in The False Memory Archive acted as a source of inspiration for composer/singer Evelien van den Broek. The archive consists of anonymously sent memories of events that never took place. Artist Marcel Wierckx has visualised the memories.

From a Sonic Youth cover to David Lang latest work. Violinist Isa Goldschmeding, composer/drummer Brendan Faegre, and sound director Micha de Kanter present a diverse and dynamic programme entitled Bow Hammer Connection, which features works that are created by living US composers. November Music commissioned artistic leader Brendan Faegre to write Dance Suite in G with dubstep, drum ‘n bass, and acid house acting as inspiration.
The talented composer Jesse Passenier has developed an innovative style that straddles the boundaries between classical music and jazz. He launches The Fluid Orchestra at November Music 2016. The eight-strong ensemble comprises, among others, Dudok Quartet. The suite Lit Scenes is overflowing with lyrical melodies that are embedded in colourful harmonies and moods. Anne Gentenaar will create live visuals. Jesse Passenier has worked as an arranger for Metropole Orchestra, the Netherlands Wind Ensemble, and Noordpool Orkest.

Ursae Minoris for contrabass and live electronics takes its cues from the Little Dipper constellation map. “I used transcriptions of star patterns to produce the musical information for this piece such as pitch and register. It is a philosophical thriller with a mysterious denouement”, Van Houdt states.

In the hands of Vincent Peirani the accordions tends to transform explosively. ‘A legend in the marking,’ as the Süddeutsche Zeitung wrote after seeing him play. The Frenchman has been declared jazz musician of the year in his own country as well as Germany. It is clear that he has given the old instrument a new lease of life. Peirani has been influenced by many genres – rock, blues, folk music – but he knows how to bend music to his will. The results range from atmospheric, almost classical compositions to pieces that are bursting with condensed rock energy. The future of jazz has just acquired an additional hue. With Emile Parisien (saxophone), Tony Paeleman (Fender Rhodes), Julien Herné (bass) and Yoann Serra (drums).

Composer Bryce Dessner, guitarist of the well-known American rock band The National, has written a solo piece for Lavinia Meijer. The brand-new harp composition will receive its baptism at November Music. In addition, work by the up-and-coming New York composer Ellis Ludwig-Leone will be premiered. Ludwig-Leone took the world by storm with his adventurous indie rock band San Fermin. During this first Saturday night concert Meijer will also play a selection from Etudes by Philip Glass, who personally helped her to fine-tune the virtuoso harp arrangements over a number of hours.
The second evening concert features harpist Lavinia Meijer as she plays works by Dutch composer JacobTV. Harper Songs is about life and death. About a devastating earthquake in China, Hillary Clinton’s bleating laughter, crack-addicted prostitutes in New York, and ancient Egyptian funeral texts. Harper Songs contains new work and older compositions that JacobTV wrote for Lavinia Meijer, including the controversial Cities Change the Songs of Birds and the pleasant Pastorale. Singer Nora Fischer and percussionists Niek KleinJan and Christiaan Saris also participate in the programme.

Tonight November Music is a place where three countries meet. The South Netherlands Philharmonic plays orchestral works from Belgium, Germany, and the Netherlands. The three contemporary composers sought (and found) inspiration in the magical world of the painter Hieronymus Bosch. Two of Willem Jeths’ works are included. He used texts from poet Pé Hawinkels’ cycle Bosch & Bruegel for Quale Coniugium. For Monument to a Universal Marriage he made a new arrangement for the orchestra as well as for the vocal soloists Francine Vis and Mijke Sekhuis. The Belgian composer Wim Henderickx used Bosch’s hell as a source of inspiration for his intense orchestral work Le Visioni Tue Paura. The programme also features Detlev Glanert’s Fünfzehn Karikaturen, an incisive score dripping with dark irony in the spirit of Bosch.

and initiated by November Music will be presented during the concert.

The grandly conceived Synovial Joints by US saxophonist Steve Coleman is the realisation of an unparalleled pact between jazz, minimal music, world music, and contemporary composed. Coleman has been regarded as one of the most progressive American jazz musicians for years and Synovial Joints is a temporary culmination of his oeuvre. The suite was written for a large ensemble comprising jazz as well as classical musicians. In addition to Coleman, the Council of Balance consists of regular buddies such as trumpet player Jonathan Finlayson and drummer Dan Weiss. The Americans will share the stage with the Dutch DoelenEnsemble.

The famous British Arditti Quartet returns to November Music with a recital that is adapted to the festival. They play pieces by composers in focus Willem Jeths (String quartet No. 3) and Detlev Glanert (String quartet No. 2). Glanert wrote the quartet to honour his then 80-year old teacher Hans Werner Henze. The latter’s elegiac String quartet No. 5 (In Memoriam Benjamin Britten) in which Glanert gives free reign to the full range of his lyrical expression, will also be on the programme.

Toon Tellegen’s epic poetry collection De Optocht (The procession)(2012) tells us that the end of days is nigh. Tellegen has joined forces with composer Piet-Jan van Rossum and the Ives Ensemble to stage this razor-sharp procession in the spirit of Bosch. The texts are narrated by performer Han Buhrs, actor Joop Keesmaat, and Tellegen himself.
Van Rossum says this about De Optocht: “I think that Tellegen’s almost baroque text requires a serene musical counterpart. Whereas the writing is fanciful and ornamental, the music will use extended lines that can captivate the audience over a long period of time.” Van Rossum’s work takes two-and-a-half hours to unfold. It incorporates the musical and ritual aspects of the Japanese Noh theatre. Petra van der Schoot directs the piece and provides the visuals.

The iconoclastic fury (= beeldenstorm) that started in the 16th century rages on in refugee crises and religious struggles. Composer Peter-Jan Wagemans courageously tackles such topical issues in his musical drama Beeldenstorm, together with writer Kees van der Zwaard. In this thrilling and brand-new music theatre performance, an iconoclastic storm rises between a brother and sister in an imaginary country. Tensions lead to conflict and spur a search for new truths. Wagemans’s expressive sound theatre is staged by Muziektheater Hollands Diep and directed by Cilia Hogerzeil.

Master minimalist Philip Glass dedicated his second violin concerto to the passing of the seasons. Violin Concerto no.2: The American Four Seasons has rarely been performed in the Netherlands. Star violinist Isabelle van Keulen and Amsterdam Sinfonietta devote themselves to this late masterpiece.
In addition to Glass two other contemporary composers take centre stage; both are blessed with a very distinctive musical voice. Amsterdam Sinfonietta plays John Zorn’s Kol Nidre. The US composer has set the Aramaic declaration to music in his inimitable way. The result is an intense and melancholic work for strings. Also included is the film score There Will be Blood, written by the British composer Jonny Greenwood, a multi-instrumentalist with a ‘day job’ as guitarist with Radiohead.

This year, too, musicians who move freely between genres are in charge of the closing concert. November Music asked (jazz) pianist Rembrandt Frerichs to write a special composition. He will be undertaking a cross-border globetrotting trip with guests from different musical worlds. The permanent members of his jazz trio (contrabassist Tony Overwater and percussionist Vinsent Planjer) accompany him and the renowned Cello8ctet Amterdam is also invited. For good reason; the eight cellists play contemporary as well as classical music and composers such as Arvo Pärt and Terry Riley are fans.
Hossein Alizadeh, too, is a very welcome guest. The music website Allmusic descibed him as one of Iran’s leading classical composers and musicians. Alizadeh is a virtuoso on Persian lutes (both tar and setar) who has collaborated with Djivan Gasparyan and the Masters of Persian Music. Frerichs’ journey promises to be a deep, spiritual, and magnificent sound adventure.

Walking or cycling? It is just one of many dilemmas that you will face during the ‘traditional’ KunstmuziekRoute that is part of November Music every last Sunday of the festival. Wonderful venues in downtown ‘s Hertogenbosch will open their doors between 11.30 AM and 6 PM to host the KunstmuziekRoute concerts. Girls in Airports skims over the contemporary jazz landscape in freefall. The five Danish musicians are led by saxophonists Martin Stender and Lars Greve. The group released its fourth album Fables on Edition Records (UK) last year.
‘Since releasing its self-titled debut in 2010, the Danish group Girls in Airports has managed to create their own expression, a unique blend of Nordic jazz lyricism, indie-rock influences and sounds from around the world, including the pentatonic scales of Ethiopian music, dub sounds of Jamaica and Brazilian rhythms. This is truly a globalized band if there ever was one.’ (*****) All About Jazz
Norwegian folk music, baroque excesses, Balkan folk, Americana, psychedelic rock, and free improvisation: violinist Nils Økland is an open-minded improvisator and musical explorer. His album Kjølvatn on ECM won great praise last year. The Norwegian virtuoso musician has brewed a unique amalgam that spans centuries of music. ‘A beautiful recording’, wrote The Guardian. The five-piece Nils Økland Band, featuring Mats Eilertsen on double bass and Sigbjørn Apeland on harmonium, is sensational live on stage.
‘… one of the European jazz scene’s most prolific and most unpredictable performers’, said All About Jazz about the German pianist Michael Wollny. His music is emotional, full of lyrical insights and intensely virtuoso. He plays original compositions but also comes up with surprising arrangements, influenced by sources of inspiration such as Bob Dylan, Prince, Wolfgang Rihm, and Franz Schubert. The eclectic Wollny is top of the bill in his own country. He plays the grand piano during the KunstmuziekRoute with his new trio which further consists of bassist Christian Weber and percussionist Eric Shaefer.

Robots and sound objects engage in a blistering duet with a flamenco dancer. Bagatelles is flamenco dancing but not as anyone knows it. A brand-new collaboration between composer/guitarist Aart Strootman and soprano Nora Fischer. Strootman’s composition Giudecca was commissioned by November Music. The title is derived from the name of the lowest circle of hell in Dante’s Inferno. The composition describes a descent into those gruesome depths. “The text is built from sentences that provide insights into the environment. Owing to the absence of characters and interaction Giudecca is pared down to an orchestrated staging that is both alienating and oppressive,” reveals the composer.
How would a musician’s hell sound if pictured by Hieronymus Bosch? Composers Aart Strootman and Marco Mlynek wrote new work for the classical Storioni Trio and two homemade fantasy instruments like the ones portrayed in the hell section of Bosch’ painting The Garden of Earthly Delights. Strootman plays a kind of ‘lute harp’ in his composition Tenebrae and Mlynek has built a colossal hardy-gurdy to use in his drone composition Tremors. In addition the Storioni Trio – Wouter Vossen (violin), Marc Vossen (cello), and Bart van de Roer (piano) – performs pieces by other Dutch composers.

HIERONYMUS BOSCH ROUTE
A high-spirited courtship between contemporary improvised music and a polyphonic renaissance choir. Alto saxophonist Paul van Kemenade used a timeless sound palette in his earlier work, Fantasy Colours. Now the renaissance choir Cappella Pratensis and Van Kemenade are back with an equally successful sequel. Jazz and medieval polyphony enter into a revolutionary duologue. Together with Wiro Mahieu on bass Van Kemenade joins Cappella Pratensis’ four vocalists who are led by Stratton Bull.

Composer Nizar Rohana was born in Palestine. He mixes contemporary music with the ancient tradition of the oud, a beautiful string instrument that is often heard in Arabic music. After studying musicology, oud, and composition Rohana has been performing all over the world. As part of the KunstmuziekRoute he plays intense solo pieces that borrow from eastern as well as western music.

The Amsterdams Andalusisch Orkest is an extraordinary association of musicians whose main point of focus is the continuation of Moorish-Andalusian musical traditions. The orchestra has played with big names such as Zainab Afailal, Marouane Hajji, and Samira Kadiri in recent years. This is AAO’s ode to Ziryab, father of the oud. His musical innovations have provided a strong impulse to the tarab andalusi (a deeply emotional and passionate response). Ziryab has had a lasting impact on Europe’s cultural and musical landscape.

BOMBAY BAZAARJACOBTV
A marriage made in heaven between classical, improvised, and Indian music. Bombay Bazaar from the Netherlands is a crossover ensemble in the purest sense of the word. Composer JacobTV’s ideas are pushing the boundaries as ever. They are the springboard for this fascinating ensemble consisting of violinist Lenneke van Staalen, Indian music specialist, tabla player Heiko Dijker, and the Matangi String Quartet. There is a wide range of influences – from the master of minimalism Terry Riley and classical ragas to the lyricism of modern rock – which merge into an intense, melancholic musical experience that will leave no one untouched.

FALSE MEMORIES (SHORT VERSION)EVELIEN VAN DEN BROEKTony Roe, Koen Kaptijn, Richard van Kruysdijk, Evelien van den Broek
False Memories is a musical performance with songs at the interface of experimental rock, electronics, and contemporary classical. It falls somewhere between Björk and Portishead’s quirky rock and Luciano Berio and Kurt Weill’s composed folk fantasies. The False Memory Archive, set up by British artist A.R. Hopwood, contains a variegated collection of texts that was the source of inspiration for composer/singer Evelien van den Broek.

Robert Ashley is seen as one of the most important US composers of the past decades. Pianist Reinier van Houdt closely collaborated with Ashley (who died in 2014) on The Entrance (1966), a clever game that requires 400 coins in 36 stacks, heads or tails on the black and white keys of two pianos.
The operas that US composer Robert Ashley (1930-2014) created are among the most innovative works of the 20th century. He could be called the James Joyce of opera. The vocabulary that he devised is brimming with anecdotal witticisms, stream of consciousness poetry, and the vernacular. Artist/writer Will Holder and cellist/composer Alex Waterman published a collection of Ashley’s poetry. This ‘reading concert’ sees Holder and Waterman recite certain fragments in Ashley’s spirit.
Deeply hidden in Kruithuis’ labyrinth vaults are sound installations, homemade instruments, and idiosyncratic performances presented by the members of the Instrument Inventors Initiative (iii). Composer/sound artist Matteo Marangoni is the curator.

Sophisticated humour, anecdotal seriousness, and theatrical absurdism alternate with well thought-out composed subtleties in Dutch composer Mayke Nas’ oeuvre. As part of the Cello Biennale she wrote new works for four cellists, percussion ensemble, and (ad hoc) orchestra. There will also be some One Page Compositions by well-known Dutch composers.
Ten musical miniatures for 26 different recorders. Composer Aspasia Nasopoulou wrote a composition for the recorder quintet Seldom Sene plus customized wind instruments, which have been specifically developed for this piece by sound artist Horst Rickels and spatial designer Ernst Dullemond.
SOLO SONGS FOR INSTRUMENTSIG HENNEMAN
JANCO VERDUIN / ORKEST DE EREPRIJSWilbert Bulsink
Composer Ig Henneman has created a cycle for solo instruments that is loosely based on the poetry of Ingeborg Bachmann, Nanao Sakaki, Anneke Brassinga, and Sarah Anne Lawson. The music contains guided improvisations and specific vocal elements. The concert features pieces that were written for violinist Diamanda La Berge Dramm, violist Elisabeth Smalt, clarinettist Anna voor de Wind, and bassoonist Dana Jessen plus improvisations for clarinet/shakuhachi and viola by the Baars-Henneman Duo.
The visual arts and music are closely intertwined in composer Janco Verduin’s new multimedia performance. He joins forces with orkest de ereprijs, artist Florian de Visser, and Hammond organist Wilbert Bulsink. Verduin explores our perception of images and sound. The Hammond organ is an ideal vehicle for Verduin thanks to its evocative nature and broad sound spectrum. De Visser and Verduin focus on the deceptive qualities of perception and our ability to deploy human-made technologies to shape ourselves. The result is a concert piece that uses images as groovy counterpoint.

Classical saxophonist Lotte Pen and singer/songwriter Arjen van Wijk have clicked – in a big way! Live on stage, VanDryver effortlessly fuses influences from dreamy indie rock, baroque pop, minimal music, and electronic dance. Their ambitious cross-over uses horn, flute, harp, vibraphone, and saxophone and revolves around Arjen van Wijk’s melodious voice.
The spanking new band Polytrigger, headed by pianist Matteo Mijderwijk, lets rhythms somersault and tumble over each other. Together with drummer Remco Menting (Kapok) and saxophonist Marc Alberto (Jett Rebel, among others) he creates mesmerising sound structures driven by rhythmical developments, which leave the trio plenty of room for improvisation and sound searching.

Composition and improvisation seamlessly merge under Rogier Telderman’s capable hands. ‘Music is a living organism,’ according to the pianist/composer who was designated a Young VIP last year by Dutch jazz programmers. November Music commissioned Telderman to write a composition; he has assembled an ensemble with an extraordinary wind section but within a chamber music setting. The focus is on stratification; Telderman challenges the traditional division of musical roles. With Alex Simu, (clarinets), Mark Alban Lotz (flutes), and Efe Erdem (trombone).

WILLEM JETHS

DETLEV GLANERT
AART STROOTMAN
Willem Jeths (1959) has written numerous pieces for chamber music and orchestra. The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Asko Ensemble, the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, and Kronos Quartet commissioned his pieces and he was declared Holland’s very first Composer Laureate in 2014. Jeths is prepared to go to extremes but he does not shy away from aural beauty. As he himself says, “Precisely taking tradition as your point of departure will make it possible to navigate new paths”. A composer portrait of Willem Jeths, written by Joep Christenhusz and initiated by November Music, will be presented during the concert.
JacobTV (Jacob Ter Veldhuis, 1951) started out as a rock musician before studying composition and electronics. He received the Composition Award in 1980. His pieces come from the heart, delight the ear, and are always designed to make an impact. The Whitney Museum of American Art in New York recently dedicated a three-day festival to his work. JacobTV won the BUMA Classical Award 2015 as the best Dutch classical export product of the year. His music synthesizes very diverse influences ranging from classical, contemporary, jazz, and rock to pop art.
Detlev Glanert (1960) is Germany’s most frequently performed opera composer. His operas, orchestral, and chamber music works share a lyrical musical language. Glanert is influenced by the romantic tradition but he always approaches it from a contemporary perspective.
Composer/guitarist Aart Strootman (1987) is banging on the doors of the contemporary music industry. Thanks to his innovative take on musical genres and styles there is little doubt that he is destined for greatness. Already, Strootman has been a soloist with the Britten Sinfonia, played with the radio orchestra of the Hessische Rundfunk, and the New York Philharmonic. He also participates in the groups Stargaze, TEMKO, and the Stadhouders & Strootman Duo. Aart Strootman is supported by the New Makers arrangement of the Performing Arts Fund via November Music.
Willem Jeths, JacobTV, Detlev Glanert and Aart Strootman are the composers in focus at November Music 2016. Their existing as well as new works will be performed throughout the festival.
