Merlin Community 4-H Club Press ReportsSubmitted by Ben Rhodes

#1The first meeting of the Merlin Community 4-H club.

The meeting took place at one of our leaders GerrySullivan's house at 9:30 on March the 7th, 2015.

Tyler Holden kicked the meeting off with the 4-h pledge. After that Shaun Sullivan led an ice breaker whereeveryone put something about himself on a small pieceof paper and tossed it in a circle. We all picked one upand tried to guess whose it was.

Marg Nauta then did a roll call and asked each person toname one outing that they would like to do this year inthe club. Marg then went over the welcome letter as wellas the responsibilities and obligations. Shaun Sullivanthen led a judging class on how one judges items. Wejudged four different styles of containers to take hotbeverages to the field.

We then had a jelly bean guess which Olivie Morganwon. We were asked to consider what to grow in the clubfor your achievement project in 2015 such as soybeans, corn or maybe a garden.

Thanks Gerry Sullivan for hosting a great first meeting.

#2The second meeting for the Merlin Community 4-HClub.

This meeting took place at thompsons processing plant at6:30 pm on April 2 2015. We toured thompsons plantand how they package one pound bags of white beans. We also got to see the warehouse and learn some historyof the building and the company. Fun fact the plant usedto be a glass factory for skyscraper windows. We thenmet in the plants breakroom where we judged acollection of knives for carving a turkey- butter knife, bread knife, a different style of butter knife, and aserrated knife several members gave very capablereasons.

We then had roll call and Marg asked each member whatwas his favorite part of the tour. Most people said thatthey liked the robotic arm that put the boxes on to pallets.I personally liked the whole thing because I did not evenknow the purpose of building. Marg then went over the.4-H ontario agreement as well as the executive positions

explaining what they were.

Shaun Sullivan was elected president, Tyler Holden,Vice President as well as secretary and Ben Rhodes was

elected press reporter. After that, Marg asked eachmember if they had chosen a crop or garden project. Themeeting was then adjourned and we enjoyed donuts andwater.

A big thanks to Chad Burley for giving us a tour of theplant and bringing refreshments.

#3Merlin 4-H Club Goes To Maple Syrup Fest

This is the third meeting for the Merlin Community 4-Hclub. The meeting took place at the Maple Syrup Festivalin Shrewsbury on 112 New Scotland Rd.

The most exciting part of the meeting was going for atour of the sugar bush led by Ken Bell. We learned abouthow a beech tree's organism can stay alive for hundredsof years. We also learned about the area and history ofthe bush which was very interesting.

Before that we had brunch which was pancakes, sausageand bacon with fresh delicious maple syrup. After wehad finished, Brody Warne said the 4-H pledge and wehad a chance to purchase Cotton candy and Apple cider. We then got to see where the maple water was boileddown and made into syrup at Don Giffin's shack. Therewe also got to sample maple syrup. After that, we had thechance to purchase maple syrup products.

The meeting was adjourned at 12:00 pm. A big thanks toDon Giffin and Ken Bell for giving us a tour of the sugarbush and making delicious maple syrup.

#4Merlin 4-H Club Tours Kerr's Asparagus

On Saturday May 23 2015 Merlin Community 4-H FieldCrop Club was given a tour of Kerr’s asparagus farm bymr. Bob Kerr. The meeting took place at Kerr’s field onFairview Line We saw some cool things at the field likethe flamer that they use to burn off weeds in the fieldbecause Kerr Farms grow organic asparagus.

We then went to the lunch room for theremainder of the meeting where Eric Warne led the 4-Hpledge. We then had roll call and each member wasasked what the most interesting thing they learned aboutasparagus. There was a lot of interesting answers like theflamer or how they picked the asparagus Personally Iliked the flamer.

Tyler Holden then read off the secretary minutes andShaun Sullivan held a judging class on oven mitts and

what one would be best for putting in or taking things outof the oven. Marg brought up old business such asupdating the membership forms. She also brought upnew business which was the Tilbury Fun Fest, DiscoveryDays, Thamesville Threshing Fest, Judging Night andthe Royal Winter Fair. On Saturday, June 20 2015 the Merlin Community 4-HField Crop Club went to Chris and Laura Hunt'sgarden. When all the members had arrived, the 4-Hpledge was recited. While we were there, we got to see adrone fly over a field and transmit pictures back to acomputer that the drone was controlled by. That wasreally cool.

We also got a tour of the garden which was veryinteresting. They had a very large garden with a wide

array of different fruits and vegetables. After that, wewere asked if we had decided what we would be doingfor our achievement project a crop or garden display. Thenext meeting is Diagnostic Days on July 9. Sean Sullivanthanked Chris and Laura Hunt. The meeting wasadjourned and refreshments were enjoyed.

#64-H Mini Diagnostic Night

On thursday July ninth at 6:15 pm 4-H Field Crop Clubsgathered at ridgetown college. When all members thatwere attending had arrived the 4-H pledge was recited. The most interesting part of the evening was the rainfallsimulator. It shows how different planting styles canhave an on affect runoff. No Till planting for 30 + yearshas very little runoff whereas conventional tillage have alarge amount of runoff.

After that, we went to the back field and were split upinto 3 different groups. Group one went to station 1which was about weeds, group two went to station 2which was about crop rotation and group three went tostation 3 which was about spraying and the groupsrotated through the stations each one was about 20minutes.

We went back to the parking lot where it all started themeeting was adjourn and enjoyed Pizza and pop.

Subject: 4-H Fall Canning club meeting 2

On Wednesday August 26th we had our second fallcanning club meeting. We met at Sue Cameron's houseand then went down the road to her neighbor MurrayGervais cucumber farm. Murray talked to us about thecucumber harvester. He told us that it can hold 13 or 14people; each club member got to sit and pretend to pickcucumbers to get an idea of what it feels like to pickthem all day! He explained how they stack the baskets ofcucumbers (which was three high) until the top, middleand back were full of baskets. Then we went and pickedour cucumbers by hand from the cucumber field. Afterwe were done picking the cucumbers, we went back toSue Camerons to make the dill pickles. We started bywashing them and getting rid of the pickers. Then wewent inside and started filling our jars with dill and apiece of garlic. Then we added the cucumbers, anotherpiece of dill and a piece of garlic. We had vinegar, waterand pickling salt boiling on the stove for our pickles. Then we filled the pickle jar with the brine and sealedour jars. The meeting was adjourned at 8:00pm when wewere done canning our dill pickles.
