Chapter 1 Introduction

1.1 Overview This manual describes the technical characteristics, applications, installation, and operation of the HS-Q/N four-channel high-speed data I/O modules for RAD’s Megaplex-2100 and Megaplex-2104 Modular Integrating Access Multiplexers.

Note In this manual, the generic term Megaplex is used when the information is applicable to both the Megaplex-2100 and Megaplex-2104 chassis types. The complete designation is used only for information applicable to a specific version.

The HS-Q/N modules are data sub-multiplexers which provide four high-speed synchronous data channels. Each channel can support data rates of n×56 or n×64 kbps, where n can be up to 24 for a T1 main link (maximum channel rate of 1536 kbps) and up to 31 for an E1 main link (maximum channel rate of 1984 kbps). Channel data rates, as well as all the operating parameters are controlled by the system management.

Note The total capacity of each pair of channels (ch1&2 and ch3&4) is limited to 1536 kbps for T1 links and to 1984 kbps for E1 links.

The interface type can be independently selected for each channel. Two selections are available:

• V.35

• V.11/RS-422. When using the V.11/RS-422 selection, the channel interface can be converted by means of adapter cables to V.36/RS-449, RS-530, or X.21 interfaces.

The direction of the interface signals can be set separately for each channel, using internal jumpers, to emulate DTE or DCE operation. Each channel is terminated in a 26-pin SCSI female connector.

1.2 Physical Description The HS-Q/N module panel is shown in Figure 1-1. The panel includes four 26-pin female SCSI connectors designated CH.1, CH.2, CH.3 and CH.4, for connection to the HS-Q/N data channels. Connector pin assignments and functions are given in Appendix A.

HS-Q/N

1.3 Functional Description

Interface Characteristics The HS-Q/N module supports four high speed synchronous data channels. Each channel is independently set by the user to either V.35 or V.11/RS-422 interface (electrical). The V.11/RS-422 selection provides RS-530, V.36/RS-449, or X.21 interface (physical) operation, via adaptor cables.

Each HS-Q/N channel terminates in a separate 26-pin SCSI connector. Different adaptor cables are offered by RAD to convert from the SCSI connector to a standard V.35, V.36/RS-449, RS-530 or X.21 interface. Cables are ordered separately per channel (each channel can be independently converted to a different interface). For cables pinout, see Appendix A.

Dual-Link Configuration When the Megaplex is working in a dual-link configuration, any pair of channels (ch1&2 or ch3&4) can be directed through either of the two main links. This enables two main link modules to share a single HS-Q/N module, routing data through ch1&2 to one module and through ch3&4 to another module.

HS-Q/N Installation and Operation Manual Chapter 1 Introduction

Timing Each HS-Q/N module channel supports three timing modes:

• DCE timing: the HS-Q/N module channel provides the timing signals to the DTE connected to it.

• External DCE timing: the HS-Q/N module channel provides the receive timing signal to the user's DTE, accepts an external transmit clock, and supports tail-end circuits. This mode is also called DTE1.

• DTE timing: the HS-Q/N module channel accepts the timing signals from the user's equipment, and accepts an external transmit clock. In this case, each HS-Q/N channel can be set to supply the nodal clock for the Megaplex system. This mode is also called DTE2.

A FIFO buffer is used in the transmit path of each module channel, to absorb timing variations. FIFO size can be individually configured. The Megaplex system can automatically select the minimum necessary FIFO size, however when a longer buffer is desired, the user can also manually select the FIFO size. The supported FIFO sizes are ±16 bits, ±30 bits, ±52 bits, and ±72 bits.

Timeslot Routing You can choose the main link that will carry the data applied to the HS-Q/N module channels. Moreover, you can select, for each HS-Q/N module channel, the main link timeslots assigned to that channel in the corresponding E1 or T1 main link frame.

The module also supports dual-link applications, where each pair of HS-Q/N channels can be independently connected to either of two main links. This enables routing the channels of a single HS-Q/N module to different remote sites. In this case only 30 timeslots can be selected for each pair of HS-Q/N channels.

Channel Interface Signals Each channel has local support for the DCD and DSR lines:

The DSR line is ON when the channel is connected. It switches to OFF if the channel is not connected, or if the channel is connected but engaged in a remote loop or BER test.

The DCD line is constantly ON, except when communication is not possible because of loss of frame synchronization.

In addition, each channel interface supports the CTS and RTS signals. The function of these signals depends on the selected channel operating mode:

• In the normal (bidirectional) mode, the user can set the CTS line always active (ON), or can make the CTS line track the RTS line.

• In the unidirectional mode, the CTS line is always OFF (inactive), because a unidirectional channel cannot transmit.

• In the broadcast mode, the user can configure the CTS line to be always active (ON), or can make the CTS line track the RTS line. However, in the broadcast mode, when the CTS line is configured to track the RTS line, the CTS line will actually switch to the active mode in response to the RTS line only after the

transmit path of the channel is actually connected to the main link, that is, after the channel is ready to transmit data.

Diagnostics The HS-Q/N modules include self-test upon power-up, and additional testing and diagnostic functions that can be controlled by system management, reducing downtime to a minimum. The testing capabilities include:

• Local loopback (where the signal received by the module is looped back toward the local equipment).

• Remote loopback on the local channel (loopback toward the remote equipment).

• Remote loopback on the remote channel. This loopback is activated by transmitting an inband FT1 loopback activation code. When it receives the loop code from the network side, the channel closes a loop towards the remote user side.

• Bit error rate (BER) testing. The user can select the test pattern in accordance with the specific system requirements. A BERT pattern can be transmitted in all timing modes.

• Remote loopback with BER testing.

• To enable end-to-end testing, the BER test can be activated together with a remote loopback on the remote channel.

HS-Q/N Installation and Operation Manual Chapter 1 Introduction

Figure 1-3 shows a typical dual-link application. One pair of channels is routed over an E1 or T1 network at n x 64 kbps (n is the number of timeslots) to a router. The other pair of channels is routed over the E1 or T1 network at 128 kbps to a terminal.

Figure 1-3. Typical Dual-link HS-Q/N Module Application

Support for Unidirectional and Broadcast Applications In addition to the normal (bidirectional) mode of operation, the HS-Q/N modules support the unidirectional and broadcasting modes. These modes can be used in Megaplex units equipped with two main link modules, operating in the dual-link mode.

Unidirectional Mode Applications

The unidirectional mode enables a user at a central location to send data to multiple users connected to remote Megaplex units (simplex communication), while using only one block of main link timeslot. In this mode, any message is simultaneously received by all the unidirectional users, but none of them can send back data to the originator. This capability is achieved by separating the handling of the receive and transmit paths in the timeslot assigned for the unidirectional channels, as shown by the dashed lines within the Megaplex-2100 unit at location B in Figure 1-4.

Figure 1-4 shows a simple system configuration. The figure shows only one Megaplex-2100 unit with an HS-Q/N channel configured for the unidirectional mode (location B), but the number of such units is not limited. Assuming that the required data rate is 128 kbps, this channel is assigned two timeslots on link A.

Figure 1-4. Typical Unidirectional Application

In the application shown in Figure 1-4, the user at the central location (A) is connected to an HS-Q/N channel configured for operation in the normal mode. The two timeslots assigned to user A are routed to the desired main link, and the channels of the other users (e.g., at location B) are configured for the unidirectional mode, and routed to the same timeslots on the main link connected to the Megaplex-2100 at location A (e.g., to link A).

In the forward path (from location A), the timeslots assigned to the HS-Q/N channel configured for unidirectional operation are automatically bypassed to the timeslots with the same number on link B, and in addition are routed to the receive path of the unidirectional channel. Therefore, the transmit signal of user A is relayed to the following units, and the user B receives data sent by user A.

In the reverse path (to location A), the timeslots are always bypassed from link B to link A. To prevent interference from the unidirectional channel, its transmit path is always disconnected from the main link timeslots (at location B, no information is inserted in the timeslot bypassed from link B to link A), and user B cannot transmit data to any other user.

In addition to letting all the users attached to unidirectional channels receive its messages, the user at location A can also communicate full duplex with one additional user, configured for operation in the bidirectional mode (this is illustrated by the user at location C).

Broadcast Mode Applications

The broadcast mode enables a user at a central location to communicate half-duplex with several users connected to remote Megaplex units, while using only one block of main link timeslots. As in the unidirectional mode, any message from user A is simultaneously received by all the broadcast users, but at any time only one of these users can transmit (and be received) by user A - a mode of operation used in polled applications.

1-6 Functional Description

HS-Q/N Installation and Operation Manual Chapter 1 Introduction

The broadcast capability is achieved by separating the handling of the receive and transmit paths in the timeslots assigned for the bidirectional channels, as shown by the dashed lines within the Megaplex-2100 units in Figure 1-5.

Figure 1-5 shows a basic system configuration. The figure shows only two Megaplex-2100 units (locations B and X) with an HS-Q/N channel configured for the unidirectional mode (location B), but the number of such units is not limited. Assuming that the channel rates are 198 kbps, these channels are assigned three timeslots on link A.

In the application shown in Figure 1-5, the handling of the signals generated by user A is similar to that for the unidirectional mode described above. The difference is that each broadcast user can insert its signal in the receive timeslots of link A (instead of the signal bypassed from link B): the change in routing is controlled by the RTS signal in the data connector of the HS-Q/N module:

When the RTS signal is not active (idle state), the receive timeslots are bypassed from link B to link A, and continue toward user A.

When the RTS signal is asserted, the receive timeslots of link B are disconnected from link A, and the transmit path of the local broadcast user is connected to link A.

Thus, user A can request any user to answer, and that user can assert its RTS line and connect to user A. At any time, only one user may transmit toward user A (if more than one user transmits, only the user closer to location A will actually be received).

Chapter 2 Installation and Operation

2.1 Introduction This chapter provides installation, configuration, and operation instructions for the HS-Q/N modules. The information presented in this chapter supplements the general installation, configuration and operation instructions for the Megaplex systems, contained in the Megaplex-2100 Installation and Operation Manual.

Before performing any internal settings, adjustment, maintenance, or repairs, first disconnect all the cables from the module, and then remove the module from the Megaplex enclosure. No internal settings, adjustment, maintenance, and repairs may be performed by either the operator or the user; such activities may be performed only by a skilled technician who is aware of the hazards involved. Always observe standard safety precautions during installation, operation, and maintenance of this product.

Warning

The HS-Q/N modules contain components sensitive to electrostatic discharge (ESD). To prevent ESD damage, always hold the module by its sides, and do not touch the module components or connectors.

Caution

2.2 Preparation for Installation The operating mode of the HS-Q/N modules is controlled by software. In addition, there are several jumpers or switches that select hardware operating conditions, and these may have to be set before installing a module in the Megaplex enclosure. All the other module functions are programmable by means of the system management.

If the factory (default) settings meet your specific requirements, you may skip this section and proceed with the installation of the module in the equipment enclosure, as explained in Section 2.3. To change the factory settings, proceed as explained below.

Interface Changer Boards

The HS-Q/N module has four small plug-in daughter boards called interface changer boards, one for each channel (see Figure 2-1). The function of the changer board is to select the channel interface type: each interface changer board is inserted in the position corresponding to the desired interface type. Set the interface changer boards for either V.35 or RS-422 (used for V.36/RS-449, RS-530 or X.21 physical interfaces), as required for each channel.

The default position of the interface changer boards is RS-422.

DCE/DTE Interface Mode Selection

The HS-Q/N module includes four sets of jumpers (one for each channel) that enable selection between DCE and DTE interface modes. Figure 2-1shows the location of these jumpers (JP5 through JP88).

Note that for the External DCE clock mode, the DTE jumper setting is used.

The default position of the jumpers is DCE.

Interface Type (X.21/Other) Selection

The module includes four sets of jumpers (one for each channel) that enable selection between X.21 or OTHER (used for V.35, V.36/RS-449 or RS-530) types of interfaces. Figure 2-1 shows the location of these jumpers (JP90 through JP97).

Make sure that the interface type jumper setting chosen here, matches the setting chosen for the corresponding channel interface changer board.

Note

The default position of the jumpers is OTHER.

2.3 Installing the Module in the Chassis The HS-Q/N module can be installed in an operating chassis (hot insertion).

For general installation procedures and safety instructions, refer to the Megaplex-2100 Installation and Operation Manual.

Insert the module in the prescribed I/O slot and fasten it with its two screws.

2.4 Connecting the Cables Each HS-Q/N channel terminates in a separate 26-pin SCSI connector. Different conversion cables are offered by RAD to convert from the SCSI connector to a standard V.35, V.36/RS-449, RS-530 or X.21 interface.

The cable type depends on the required interface. Cables are ordered separately per channel (each channel can be independently converted to a different interface). Table 2-1. Selection of Cables

lists the RAD catalog numbers of the required cables. The connector pinout and cable wiring information is provided in Appendix A.

Chapter 3 Configuration Instructions

3.1 Introduction This chapter provides specific configuration information for HS-Q/N modules. The configuration activities are performed by means of the management system used to control the Megaplex unit.

The instructions appearing in this chapter assume that you are familiar with the management system being used:

• Supervision terminal or Telnet (covered by the Megaplex-2100 Installation and Operation Manual).

• Network management system, e.g., the RADview network management system (refer to the RADview User's Manual for instructions).

This Chapter covers only the configuration activities specific to HS-Q/N modules. For general instructions and additional configuration procedures, refer to Chapter 5, Chapter 7 and Appendix F of the Megaplex-2100 Installation and Operation Manual.

3.2 Outline of Configuration Procedure The configuration procedure of a new HS-Q/N module includes the following main steps:

• Inclusion of a module not yet installed in the Megaplex into the database. This allows preprogramming the module parameters, so that when the module is installed in the enclosure, it will immediately start operating in the desired mode. This function is performed by means of the DEF SYS command.

• Configuration of channel parameters – use the DEF CH SS * command.

• Timeslot assignment – use the DEF TS SS * command.

The current configuration parameters of the HS-Q/N channels can be displayed using the DSP ST CH SS * command.

3.3 Configuring the Module

Channel Parameters Each HS-Q/N channel (external port) can be independently configured in accordance with the system requirements.

• To define the parameters of all the module channels, type the command: DEF CH SS *

• To define the parameters of a desired channel, type the command: DEF CH SS CC

where SS is the module slot number, and CC is the channel number (1 to 4).

Table 3-1 explains the programmable parameters of the HS-Q/N channels, and their ranges of values.

Table 3-1. Channel Parameters

Parameter Function Values

Connect Determines whether the channel is connected to the internal TDM buses of the Megaplex chassis

NO The channel is disconnected. You can still program the desired parameters, so the channel will be ready to operate when needed.

YES The channel is connected to a legacy main link port, and can carry traffic.

Default: NO

Rate Specifies the data rate of this channel. The data rate determines the number of timeslots allocated to the channel on the selected main link. The data rate is shown both as a multiple of a basic rate (56 or 64 kbps), and as an absolute number in kbps. This representation has the advantage that you can see at a glance the required number of timeslots. When selecting the rate, take into consideration the number of timeslots used by, or must be reserved for, other channels using the same main link. Moreover, if an E1 main link is used and the framing method is G.732S, you must also reserve one timeslot (timeslot 16) for signaling. The total rate assigned to a pair of consecutive channels, for example, 1 and 2, 3 and 4, etc., cannot exceed 1984 kbps (31 timeslots). In addition, you cannot select a multiple of 64 kbps for the first (odd) channel of a pair, and a multiple of 56 kbps for the even channel

The allowed range is n×56 kbps or n×64 kbps, where n is 1 through 24 for a T1 main link, and 1 through 31 for an E1 link. Default: 1x64 = 64 KBPS

Clock Mode

Selects the clock mode used by the channel. Refer to the Megaplex-2100 Installation and Operation Manual for a description of channel timing modes Note: If the Megaplex unit uses external timing, the HS-Q/N channel that will serve as the external clock source must use the DTE (DTE2) clock mode. Verify that the channel DCE/DTE Interface Mode jumpers have been set accordingly (as explained in Section 2.2). For the External DCE clock mode, use the DTE jumper setting.

DCE – The channel provides transmit and receive clocks to the user’s equipment. EXTERNAL DCE – The channel provides the receive clock to the user’s DTE, and accepts the transmit clock from the user’s equipment. DTE – The channel accepts transmit and receive clocks from the user’s equipment. Default: DCE

CTS Selects the state of the channel CTS line. Note: When the channel is configured for operation in the UNI-BRD RX mode, the CTS line is always off.

ON The CTS line is continuously on. RTS The CTS line tracks the state of the local RTS

line. Default: ON

FIFO Size Selects the size of the FIFO buffer used by the channel. In general, you should select AUTOMATIC. For special applications that require longer buffers, you may want to select manually one of the supported FIFO sizes (±16 bits, ±30 bits, ±52 bits, or ±72 bits) Default: AUTOMATIC

AUTOMATIC – Automatic selection of FIFO size. The automatically selected value depends on the channel data rate:

• ±16 bits for 64 kbps (1 TS)

• ±30 bits for 128 and 192 kbps (2 or 3 TS)

• ±52 bits for 256 through 320 kbps (4 or 5 TS)

• ±72 bits for 384 through 1536 kbps (6 to 24 TS)

• ±52 bits for 1600 through 1792 kbps (25 to 28 TS)

• ±30 bits for 1856 and 1920 kbps (29 or 39 TS)

• ±16 bits for 1984 kbps (31 TS). 16 BITS, 30 BITS, 52 BITS, 72 BITS – Selects a specific FIFO size: ±16 bits, ±30 bits, ±52 bits, or ±72 bits, respectively. Make sure to select a value equal to, or exceeding, the automatically selected value at the operating data rate. Default: AUTOMATIC

Timeslot Assignment After performing the configuration of the individual module channels, it is necessary to assign main link bandwidth to each connected channel.

• When using the BI-DIR or UNI-BRD TX mode, use the DEF TS command as explained in the Megaplex-2100 Installation and Operation Manual.

• When using the UNI-BRD RX or BID-BRD RX mode, timeslot assignment for the receive direction is made using the dedicated routing fields of the DEF CH command.

3.4 Displaying Status and Configuration Information You can read the HS-Q/N status and configuration information using the DSP ST CH command. For a general description of this command, refer to Appendix F of the Megaplex-2100 Installation and Operation Manual.

The DSP ST CH command includes two sections: • Hardware Config/Status: displays the module interface type (V.35, RS-422),

and the state of the RTS (or CI) line of each channel at the time the command has been received by the module.

• Software Configuration: displays a data form similar to that displayed by the DEF CH command, showing the current configuration of each channel. For a description of the displayed parameters, refer to Table 3-1.

Chapter 4 Troubleshooting and Diagnostics

This chapter explains the module specific tests and diagnostic functions and provides troubleshooting instructions.

Information on the alarms and error messages generated by the HS-Q/N module appears in Megaplex-2100 Installation and Operation Manual.

The diagnostic information presented in this chapter supplements the general Megaplex diagnostics operation instructions contained in the Megaplex-2100 Installation and Operation Manual.

4.1 Diagnostics The HS-Q/N modules support the following tests and loopbacks:

• Local loopback (where the signal received by the channel is looped back toward the local equipment).

• Remote loopback on the local channel (loopback toward the remote equipment).

• Remote loopback on the remote channel. This loopback is activated by transmitting an inband FT1 loopback activation code.

• Bit error rate (BER) testing. The user can select the test pattern in accordance with the specific system requirements.

• Bit error rate (BER) testing together with activation of remote loopback on the remote channel, for end-to-end testing.

Diagnostics 4-1

Page 28: 4-Channel High Speed Data Module MEGAPLEX-2100 …radproductsonline.com/support/cs11c01.rad.co.il/radcnt/mediaserver/... · Installation and Operation Manual MEGAPLEX-2100 MODULE

Chapter 4 Troubleshooting and Diagnostics HS-Q/N Installation and Operation Manual

The user can also specify the time a loopback remains active: the range is 1 through 30 minutes, in 1-minute steps. After the specified time, the loopback is automatically deactivated, thereby reducing the management workload during system troubleshooting. The default selection is continuous connection, that is, the test or loopback remain active until canceled by a user's command.

The following sections describe the available diagnostic activities.

Local Loopback

The local loopback is performed at the channel input, by returning the transmit signal of the channel to the receive path. The transmit signal is still sent to the remote MEGAPLEX unit. A typical local loopback signal path is shown in Figure 4-1.

Inband Activation of Loopbacks

The HS-Q/N module supports the FT1 inband loopback code, in accordance with ANSI T1E1.2/93-003. If FT1 mode is enabled in the remote unit, and an HS-Q/N channel receives the FT1 loopback code, the local HS-Q/N module activates the remote loopback toward the remote side, as shown in Figure 4-2.

The local user can deactivate a loopback activated in response to the reception of the FT1 code without waiting for the remote end to deactivate the loopback. This can be done either by disabling the FT1-activated loopback by a local command, or by activating another type of loopback on the corresponding channel.

Bit Error Rate Testing (BERT) The BERT is used to check for proper data transmission through a selected channel, and obtain a qualitative evaluation of data transmission without using external test equipment.

The bit error rate is measured by applying a user-selected test sequence generated by an on-board generator to the input of the transmit path. The transmitted data is returned by means of a loopback somewhere along the data path (e.g., by connecting a local or remote loopback) to the receive path of the module, and routed to a test sequence evaluator.

For enabling end-to-end testing, the HS-Q/N module supports simultaneous activation of a remote loopback on the remote channel, together with the BER test. Figure 4-4 shows the signal path during this type of test.

Instead of using a loopback, it is also possible to activate the BERT at both ends of the link, because the same data patterns are used at both ends. The evaluator compares the received data, bit by bit, to the original data and detects any difference (bit error).

4-4 Diagnostics

HS-Q/N Installation and Operation Manual Chapter 4 Troubleshooting and Diagnostics

The user can read the accumulated test time and the number of errors detected since the test has been started, together with information on the current channel status (synchronized or not), and the total time the measurement has been interrupted because of loss of synchronization. For convenience, the user can also clear the accumulated results without interrupting the test, and can check that a link is alive by injecting single errors.

The test patterns that can be selected by the user include:

• QRSS test pattern.

• Pseudo-random sequences of 63, 511, 2047, 2E15-1, 2E20-1 and 2E23-1.

• Patterns of 1M-7S (1 mark followed by 7 spaces), 7M-1S (7 marks followed by 1 space), alternating marks and spaces, continuous mark and continuous space.

During the BERT, the channel is disconnected from the user data equipment.

At any given time, BER testing can be performed on only one channel of the HS-Q/N module.

Chapter 4 Troubleshooting and Diagnostics HS-Q/N Installation and Operation Manual

Recommended Test Sequence The loops available on the HS-Q/N module provide a rapid and efficient way to identify the general location of a fault at either the HS-Q/N module, or in the external equipment or connections to channels.

If a complaint is received from one of the users connected to a HS-Q/N module, first activate the HS-Q/N local loopback at the side the complaint is received from. The local user must receive its own signal. If the signal is not received, the problem is at the local end:

• Check the connections to the user equipment, or the user's equipment itself. Replace the cable.

• Replace the local HS-Q/N module.

If the local user receives its own signal when the local loopback is connected, activate the remote loopback on the remote channel and repeat the check. You may also perform BER testing, to confirm the proper operation of the transmission path.

If the remote loopback and BER test indicate the link operates normally, the problem is at the remote end. To check, repeat the procedure on the remote Megaplex unit.
