Park district has taken measures to protect birds
Janet ChenJoggers, picnickers and bird-
watchers at Alameda’s Crown Beach will notice a recent installa-tion in the landscape: cautionary signs that instruct beachgoers to stay at least 20 feet away from the roosting snowy plovers.
Late last year the East Bay Regional Park District (EBRPD) undertook a $5.6 million rehabilita-tion project that delivered 82,600 cubic yards of sand by barge to Crown Beach. “It seems that the plovers have been especially attracted to Crown Beach since we placed new, clean sand on it,” said Matthew Graul, the park district’s chief of stewardship. “This sand may have a consistency that the plovers like.”
The federal government lists snowy plovers as a threatened spe-cies. Beachfront developments and disruptive human recreation in the areas where the birds typically rest and breed have contributed to their decline. In California today, snowy

plovers occupy less than half their original breeding sites.
“This status requires that spe-cial measures be taken to protect the plovers from harassment or
disturbance,” said bird watcher Leora Feeney of the birds’ declin-ing numbers.
However, the placid envi-ronment that plover protection
requires is difficult to achieve, especially with the constant threat of dogs or humans scaring off the adult birds.

Animal Shelter (FAAS) took over responsibility for the Alameda Animal Shelter in January 2012, we took on a major financial chal-lenge to reduce operating costs and raise over $300,000 annually to keep the shelter operating at a lower cost to the city.
Audited results of the 2012-13 fiscal year ending last July, the first complete fiscal year the shel-ter was under FAAS management, are now available. They demon-strate how quickly we have been able establish a firm financial foundation.
During the year, we supple-mented the $300,000 contract with the City of Alameda with another $300,000 in individual, community and local business donations and corporate and foundation grants. We also gener-ated over $100,000 from fundrais-ing events and nearly as much in license and adoption fees. Along with other revenue, the total was just under $800,000. Of that, over $530,000 was spent directly
on shelter operations, $42,000 on administration and just over $42,000 on fundraising expenses. A surplus of over $200,000 was put in reserve.
What started off as a seem-ingly daunting task has turned out to be less onerous given the generosity of the community and the resourcefulness of our board, staff and volunteers. FAAS’ annual report, the 2014-2017 stra-tegic plan and its IRS reporting form 990 filing are all available for viewing at www.alamedaanimalshelter.org.
Angel FundFAAS has established the
“Angel Fund” to provide the best care possible to help critically ill or injured abandoned animals. Donations from the community make this important fund possible so that we can help animals live full and pain-free lives. Please con-sider making a donation today to help save an animal’s life. Julie’s Coffee & Tea Garden, located at 1223 Park St., is Alameda’s one-of-a-kind
spot for organic coffee and tea, healthy eats, artisan wine and beer, unique gifts, and social occasions. The neighborhood cafe is the heart-felt expression of proprietess, Julie Baron.
Julie’s pathway into the world of tea and coffee began with her love of herbs. Starting in the western hills of Sonoma County in 1990, she raised aromatic and tonic herbs and flowers which she sold at local farmers’ markets. In
1995, Julie hooked up with the folks at Taylor Maid Farms and was given the opportunity to cre-ate and develop their tea division.
After spending ten years in wholesale, Julie yearned to serve her customers face-to-face and create a soothing space for people to share and learn. From a love of all things plant-made, Julie’s Coffee & Tea Garden was born Jan 1, 2005.
Julie takes pride in stocking local or organic consumables. She carries premium organic cof-fee that is small-batch roasted by
Julie’s Coffee & Tea Garden, Alameda’s One-of-a-Kind CafeTaylor Maid Farms in Sebastopol; the several dozen varieties of loose-leaf teas from around the world are organic and free-trade; and the food menu consists of fresh, organic dishes, all from ingredients grown within a hundred miles.
Enjoy a soothing pot of tea in the garden surrounded by aromatic plant or sink into a stuffed chair sipping on a custom brew of freshly ground organic coffee. On a warmer day, ask for one of Julie’s refreshing specialty drinks such as the ginger-lemon brew, flower power punch, rosemary-mint green tea cooler, or
lavender lemonade. The food menu is also inspiring.
Choose from the daily selection of locally made pastries, toasted artisan breads served with herbal jellies, seasonal veggie quiches, and daily sandwich “melts.” Other taste-ful delights include vegan pate and tea-soaked quinoa.
Julie’s Coffee & Tea Garden is also a specialty store that offers a selection of unique tea and coffee accessories, recycled wood furniture, plants, pots, bird feeders, fountains and trellises… just to name a few of the items.
To add to the tranquil setting, Julie’s features the work of local artisans on the walls and on the shelves. The beautiful selection of paintings, ceramics, and handcrafts is always changing.
After browsing the art inside Julie’s Coffee & Tea Garden, step into the back garden where Julie
has created a green oasis using native herbs, plants, and locally made ceramic and metal garden-ware. It’s a quiet retreat just steps away from the bustle of Park Street.
