2020 Priorities: Reading, Spelling & Community Partnerships

Principal’s Message. Hello Parents, Caregivers and Community Members, The first week of school has come and gone and we have already hit the ground running. I would like to extend my thanks for the warm welcome I have received—it really has been lovely connecting with Dalveen staff, students, families and community members. I am looking forward to working alongside you all for a productive and satisfying school year. Over the next few weeks I will be meeting with each of our families to listen to your feedback and ideas for our school that will help us develop a clear direction for the future.

Swimming Trials: As you are aware the Small School Swimming Carnival was cancelled in Term 4 last year and a swim trial will take place on Wednesday afternoon from 5pm onwards to provide a representative pathway. Lachlan and Addie will be competing and we would like to wish them lots of fun and all the best. Reading Strategies:

The following strategies will help with your child’s reading journey. Please take the time to discuss these strategies with your child at home :-)

Reading Comprehension Strategy of the Fortnight: “Finding Word Meaning in Context”

Sometimes when you read, you find a word whose meaning you do not know. Often you can tell the meaning of the word by the way the word is used in the sentence. This is

called understanding word meaning in context. Questions about meaning in context ask you to find the meaning of a word that may not be familiar to you. If you have trouble

choosing an answer for a question like this, try each answer choice in the sentence where the word appears in the passage. See which answer choice makes the most sense.

Reading Fluency Strategy of the Fortnight: “Accuracy”

Decoding Strategy of the Fortnight: “Flippy Dolphin”
