    Reformation: Healing Broken RelationshipsInitial Words {139}

    Great spiritual revivals in the pastfostered healed relationships.

    Movements of the Holy Spirit involve

    breaking down the barriers in ourrelationship with God and with one

    another. The greatest demonstrationof the power of the gospel is notnecessarily what the church says but

    how the church lives.

    The apostle, who preached grace,needed to extend grace to a young

    preacher who had disappointed him.

    The apostle of forgiveness neededto forgive.

    John Mark grew in the affirmingmentorship of Barnabas and,eventually, Pauls heart was

    apparently touched by the changes.

    1. Relationship Between Two PeopleFrom Fracture to Friendship {140}

    John Mark became one of theapostles trusted companions. Paul

    highly recommended John Mark as a

    fellow worker to the church atColossae. At the end of Pauls life, he

    strongly encouraged Timothy to bringJohn Mark with him to Rome. Paulsministry was enriched by John Mark

    whom he had obviously forgiven.

    1. Relationship Between Two PeopleFrom Slave to Son {141}

    Relationships mattered to Paul. Theapostle knew that fractured

    relationships are detrimental tospiritual growth.

    Philemon was a church leader in

    Colossae. If he harbored bitternesstoward Onesimus, it would color his

    Christian witness.

    1. Relationship Between Two PeopleFrom Slave to Son {141}

    As Philemons brother in Christ andwilling worker, Onesimus could havea wonderful future. The restorationof a broken relationship could make

    a dramatic difference in his life.

    He became a faithful and belovedbrother and colaborer in the gospel

    with Paul.

    2. Relationship Within the ChurchFrom Comparison to Complement{142}

    God calls us to cooperation, notcompetition. Each believer is giftedby God to cooperate in ministering

    to the body of Christ and serving thecommunity. There are no greater or

    lesser gifts. All are necessary inChrists church. Our God-given giftsare not for selfish display. They are

    given by the Holy Spirit for service.

    2. Relationship Within the ChurchFrom Comparison to Complement{142}

    All comparisons with others areunwise, because they will make usfeel either discouraged or arrogant.

    Both of these attitudes cripple oureffectiveness for Christ.

    Our labors will complement theefforts of other members, and thechurch of Christ will make giant

    strides for the kingdom.

    against you, go and tell him his fault

    3. Relationship: Steps to RestoreFrom Friction to Forgiveness {143}

    It is the goodness of God [that]leads you to repentance.

    In Christ, we were reconciled to Godwhile we were yet sinners.

    Our repentance and confession donot create reconciliation. Christs

    death on the cross did; our part is to

    accept what was done for us.

    3. Relationship: Steps to RestoreFrom Friction to Forgiveness {143}

    Forgiveness is also so crucial for ourown spiritual well-being.

    Forgiveness is releasing another

    from our condemnation becauseChrist has released us from His

    condemnation. We can forgivebecause we are forgiven. We canchoose to forgive in spite of the

    other persons actions or attitudes.

    3. Relationship: Steps to RestoreFrom Rancor to Restoration {144}

    Jesus desire is to keep conflict in assmall a group as possible. His intentis that the two people involved solve

    the problem themselves.

    As the number of people involved in

    a conflict between two individualsincreases, the more contention is

    created.

    3. Relationship: Steps to RestoreFrom Rancor to Restoration {144}

    This second step must always followthe first step. The purpose is to bring

    people together, not drive them

    farther apart. The one or two whojoin the offended party come in

    Christian love and compassion ascounselors and prayer partners inorder to participate in bringing two

    estranged people together.

    3. Relationship: Steps to RestoreFrom Rancor to Restoration {144}

    When all attempts do not work,Jesus instructs us to bring the issuebefore the church. The appropriate

    place to bring the issue, is thechurch board.

    Again, Christs purpose isreconciliation. It is not to blame one

    party and exonerate the other.
