LISTENING SCRIPT TEST1 2008/9

Richard Allen Garriott was born in Cambridge, England, in 1961 and raised in Texas. He is the son of scientist Owen K. Garriott, the astronaut who flew with Skylab 3 . At High School, Richard took an interest in computers and began self-directed courses in programming in which he created fantasy computer games. He produced his first published game in the summer of 1980 while working at a Computer and retail store. Garriott earned much money from it to pay for his education at the University of Texas. In the early 1980s, Garriott developed the Ultima computer game series. By the time he developed his third installment, the games had such a large success that Garriott along with his brother and father established Origin Systems, their own video game publisher which became one of the most influential game developers   in the   history of video games . On October 12, 2008, Garriot launched aboard Soyuz TMA-13 to the International Space Station as a self-funded tourist and returned safely to Earth on October 24. He is the sixth space tourist, reportedly paying $30 million USD.  During his stay on the International Space Station (ISS), Garriott took part in several education efforts. As an Amateur Radio Operator, he communicated with students and using Amateur Radio. Garriott also transmitted photographs using the ARISS SSTV amateur radio system. Garriott also worked with the Windows on Earth project to provide an interactive, virtual view of Earth as seen from the ISS. Garriott used Windows on Earth software to Mr Hadji Test N°3 4th formers- Dar Chabaane Sec. School 2009/ 10

assist in the selection of locations on Earth to photograph, and the public could use the same online tool to track the ISS and see the view Richard was experiencing out there. After the flight, Richard's photographs will be available to the public through Windows on Earth.
