Day 1 Welcome to Bavaria Sat, Aug 4th

Highlights History of Bavaria and Munich City Tour Bavarian Welcome Dinner

Welcome to Munich! We have an afternoon city tour so you can experience the best of the "World City with Heart". We visit a Biergarten and learn about the history of Bavaria. It is a relaxed day to help you acclimate to jet lag if necessary. We top off the day with a fantastic welcome dinner with local cuisine.

Day 2 Dachau and 3rd Reich Munich Sun, Aug 5th

Highlights Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site 3rd Reich Tour of Munich

We have a guided tour of the Dachau Memorial Camp in the morning. You will learn about the terror and tragedy as well as the history of the concentration camp system. At lunch we can discuss your reactions to the camp over beer and brats. In the afternoon we'll do a 3rd Reich tour of Munich, which was considered the "home of the movement". We will see where some of the important events of the party's rise to power took place as well as several sites related to the Nazi regime and WWII.

Day 3 Obersalzberg & the Eagles Nest Mon, Aug 6th

Highlights The Eagle’s Nest, Teahouse at the Top of a Mountain Obersalzberg, the Village the Nazis Stole

Today we go to Obersalzberg, where Hitler had his summer home and which was considered the second seat of power for the Nazi regime. We visit the Eagle's Nest, the mountaintop tea house with fantastic views. We also fully explore the village, which the Nazis commandeered, demolished, and rebuilt into a militarized "off limits" area. We visit the Documentation Center, bunker system and see the remnants left after the Allies bombed the compound.

Day 4 Nuremberg Tue, Aug 7th

Highlights Party Rally Grounds and Documentation Center Art Bunker, Where the Crown Jewels Were Stored Saal 600, the Courtroom of the War Crimes Trails

On tap today is Nuremberg, where the Nazis held their annual party rally weeks in the 1930's and where the historic war crimes trials were held after the war. We spend the morning at the party rally grounds, including the Zeppelinfeld and the documentation Center in the congress hall. In the afternoon we visit the war crimes trials courtroom and museum and have a guided tour of the art bunker, where the Nazis hid the city's precious art, including the crown jewels of the Holy Roman Empire.

Day 5 Into the East Wed, Aug 8th

Highlights Divided Germany Museum at the Old Border Ruins of an Underground Messerschmitt Factory

A truly fascinating day starts with a visit to an absorbing open air museum in Moedlareuth, a town that was split down the middle by the former border between east and west. Here you really get a feel of what divided Germany was like. In the afternoon we visit an intriguing site where the Nazis tried to build a Messerschmitt aircraft factory in a mountain. We have a guided tour here and get a unique perspective on the last ditch attempts of the Nazi regime to turn the tide of the war.

Day 6 Dresden Thu, Aug 9th

Highlights City tour of Dresden The Green Vault in the Royal Palace Stasi Prison

Most of the day is spent in Dresden, an astonishing city that reconstructed some of its most important buildings only after German reunification. After a guided city tour we visit the two most prominent of these projects, the Royal Palace, including the Green Vault, and the Frauenkirche, the city's main church. Later we visit a preserved Stasi prison and also see where Vladimir Putin worked as a KGB spy from 1985 to 1990. In the late afternoon we head to Berlin.

Day 7 Berlin 3rd Reich Fri, Aug 10th

Highlights The Reichstag Building and Holocaust Memorial Discover Hitler’s Ultimate Plans for “Germania” Topography of Terror

The theme of today is 3rd Reich Berlin. We start with a visit to the area around Brandenburg Gate including the Holocaust Memorial, the Reichstag Building and the site where Hitler's bunker was. Next we visit an engrossing exhibit on Hitler's ultimate plans for Berlin and Germany. After lunch we have a riveting tour of a collapsed flak (anti-aircraft) tower, followed by a short stop at the German Resistance Memorial Center. We end the day at the Topography of Terror, Berlin's 3rd Reich documentation center.

Day 8 The Divided City Sat, Aug 11th

Highlights Berlin Wall Memorial Tour of the Former Stasi HQ Building Checkpoint Charlie and Crossing the Border

Same city; different topic. It is all about divided Berlin today. We start with the instructive Berlin Wall Memorial and a museum which focuses on everyday life in the German Democratic Republic (DDR). Next up is the Berlin's Stasi prison followed by lunch at a throwback East Berlin restaurant. We drive along a monumental socialist boulevard and take a guided tour of the former Stasi headquarters. We end with short visits to former border crossings, including Checkpoint Charlie. Farewell dinner this evening.

Day 9 Farewells Sun, Aug 12th

Highlights Safe Transport to the Airport

Sad farewells this morning as we bring you safely to the Berlin airport. That is, unless you have opted for the one day extension to Potsdam or the two day extension to Potsdam and the Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp Memorial site.
