First contact point for the user within IMS Acts as a proxy Forward the SIP register message request received from

the UE to an I-CSCF Performs the authorisation of the use of bearer resources

    and QoS management

    Generation of CDRs

Is the contact point within an operators network for allconnections destined to a subscriber of thatnetwork operator or a roamer registered in the networkof that operator

Assigns a S-CSCF to a user during SIP registration Obtain from HSS the address of the S-CSCF Route a SIP request received from another networktowards the S-CSCF

Generation of CDRs Hides the network topology of an operator (THIG)

Performs the session control for the user. Maintains asession state for support of services

May behave as a register Interacts with service platforms for the support of services

Obtains the address of the I-CSCF for the networkoperator serving the destination subscriber

    Quality of Service negotiation

    Session set-up

    In an established session

IMS sessions will support several IP multimedia applicationsindependently of who implements them

Voice calls between IMS users and circuit switched usersmust be transparent for the user

Simplicity in the access to multimedia applications in real

time Use of SIP for signalling

IMS performs the multimedia flows synchronisation

    Operation ModesOperation Modes (I)(I)

Broadcast Transmission of multimedia data to all users in a broadcast

    service area

User subscription to this mode is not required But in order to receive the multimedia data , user must have

enabled the specific broadcast service locally on theirmobile terminal

In this mode, charging data will not be generated, thus thereception of the traffic is not guaranteed.

    Operation ModesOperation Modes (II)(II)

Multicast Transmission of multimedia data to a multicast group in a

multicast service area. It is possible to transmit selectively

    within the multicast service area.

User subscription to the multicast subscription groups isrequired. This can be made by the operator, the user or athird party.

One user can be joined to several multicast groups at thesame time
