Students in fifth and sixth grade have researched about some unique buildings in Rivas Vaciamadrid, Madrid.
Rivas is a quite new town, and therefore so they are most of their
buildings. We offer you a summary of some of their works.
LA CASA + GRANDE
“The largest house”
(La Casa + Grande) is a Youth Centre in Rivas.
Nacho Martín and Manuel Collado were the
architects of the project.
They met with a group of young people to
exchange ideas and concerns. Subsequently
these guidelines were changed into colour and
volume. The unique aspect of the building is the free-spirited young people reflection.
The interior layout of the building was designed with the help of young people themselves based on the activities they wanted to develop inside
the place: workshops, theater, music ...
PLAZA ECÓPOLIS
Ecopolis Square is located near the town hall of Rivas
Vaciamadrid. It is an example of the fact that to
build and live sustainably is not only possible but
positive for the city and its
inhabitants. Both, the open space as a meeting place
and its different buildings (Hopscotch nursery and
Resource Center for Children, Interpretive Center and Solar Energy House) are units dedicated
to education, leisure and child advocacy environment. A curiosity: the pond in the center of the Square is a macrophyte plants lagoon, which
naturally purify wastewater from the nursery. These plants allow a complete recycling of water for later use in irrigation of the vegetation of
the square.
This is the model of the church built by Sergio, Regina , Jesús, Lucía and
Henar, pupils from 5th A class.
SANTA MONICA
CHURCH
The Amazing church has been constructed in 2008.
Rear façade (photo) is designed to collect light and direct it to
the altar. All the building is covered with steel plates cut.
CHICO MÉNDES
Environmental Resource Center Chico Mendes has an innovative
architectural design. It’s one of the most unique buildings in the
city. Built with non aggressive to the environment materials, is
named alter "Chico Mendes" in memory of the Brazilian
environmental leader who was killed by meaning in the defense
of the Amazon. The orientation
of the building is designed to maximize light and solar energy.
The works of students in grades 5th and 6th are right now exposed in our
school. Besides these examples of Rivas, in the exhibition we can trace many other buildings of Madrid (Palacio Longoria, Museo del Prado, Kio
Towers, Palacio de Oriente, el Mirador de San Chinarro… ...) and some others from the rest of Spain (El Capricho de Gaudi). t

The construction of an Alsacian House, by the students of CP-CM1 in May/June 2011
1. We stuck strips of thick card onto the wooden structure to represent the timbering ("colombage").
2. We covered these strips with newspaper to hide the joins so that we could paint over them.
3. We fashioned bretzels from papier maché.
4. This is the result of the first three stages !
5. The timberwork was covered in dark brown paint. The cob between the timbers was made from sawdust
mixed with blue ink.
6. A close-up the "poteau cornier" - the corner post. This is the most important piece as it supports an Alsacian house.
7. Finally, the windows were decorated with lace curtains. Our work of art is ready for exhibition.

CHRISTMAS IN THE CZECH REPUBLIC
In the Czech Republic, we celebrate
Christmas from the 24th of December to the 26th of
December. Children have Christmas holidays for about 12
days and some adults take a holiday, too.
We start to prepare for Christmas four
weeks before Christmas Eve. This period of
time is called "Advent". People make or buy
an Advent wreath with four candles and on each of the four
Sundays during Advent, a new candle is lit. Traditionally,
during the time of Advent,
women are very busy
cleaning the house, cooking and
baking Christmas cookies and
cakes. Children have special calendars called "Christmas
Calendars" - it has 24 windows and every day, children
open a window and find a piece of chocolate. Czech people
also decorate their houses and trees in their gardens with
various Christmas ornaments and colourful lights. They buy
Christmas flower and put a bunch of mistletoe on the
ceiling light or on the top of the door.
Before Christmas or on the 24th, we
decorate a Christmas tree. The tree is usually
a spruce tree, but it can also be a pine or a fir tree. We
decorate the tree with chocolate sweets, gingerbread,
candles, and Christmas ornaments. According to tradition,
those who don’t eat meat on the day of Christmas Eve will
see the "golden pig" later in the evening as a reward.
Christmas dinner starts at about 5
pm on the 24th of December. We
usually have fish soup
and fried carp with
potato salad. Some people don’t like fish,
so they have pork or chicken schnitzel with
potato salad. For dessert, we have apples as a symbol of
health, a Christmas cake “Vánočka”, chocolates, nuts,
dried fruits and cookies.
After dinner the best part of the day
comes: opening the presents! The whole
family comes together by the Christmas
tree where we give each other presents
while listening to Christmas carols, singing, and talking.
Some people have a tradition of going to church later in
the evening for midnight mass.
Then we usually spend the rest of the Christmas
holiday visiting our friends and relatives, going for walks,
going skiing, relaxing or watching TV.
Before Christmas, the children in our school
make various Christmas decorations, have
Christmas “afternoons” with their parents, have
Christmas parties with their classmates. Some
classes bake Christmas cookies and cakes, some prepare a
Christmas play (for example: the story about Three kings,
the story about Baby Jesus). The children discuss and
practise the Christmas traditions and customs with their
teachers. Children colour or draw Christmas pictures, do
Christmas quizzes, decorate forest trees with fruits and
vegetables for the animals, participate in the School
Christmas competition, give their classmates presents and
they all have fun with Christmas.

NEW YEAR 2012
Norway team, Rovar school November 15th we devoted the entire day to the Comenius project. The eldest pupils learned about some famous buildings in Haugesund and travelled to town to take pictures. The pupils in grade 6 made a typical Norwegian window display and drew some pictures showing Norwegian Christmas decorations.
How we decorate for Christmas in windows
In Norway we decorate in windows with many things. We put angles, candles, Santa Claus, candle sticks, hearts and stars in our windows. Many think it is cosy to decorate windows. Many decorate with Christmas things in December. Elida Mathilde Nedrebø, grade 6
The Christmas tree
Now you are going to read about the Christmas tree and learn what the decorations on the tree symbolize. The Christmas tree has two names: Yule tree and Christmas tree. The Christmas tree was invented in Germany. The Christmas tree is often decorated with candles, shiny spheres, angels and a star in the top of the tree. The candles symbolize that Jesus was a light and burned up to give the people light. The angels symbolize the angels who flew over Betlehem and the star symbolizes the star of Bethlehem. In my house in Norway we decorate the Christmas tree with our flag. Now you know where the Christmas tree was invented and what the different decorations symbolize. Torbjørn Rasmussen, grade 6
Log Cabins The pupils in grade 1.-4. learned about how they built log cabins back at the 1700th-1800th century. Among other things they learned that these cabins usually had only one or two rooms, that they contained very few furniture, and that there were an open fireplace in the middle of the room. The pupils also made models of log cabins.
Gapahuk At the local shore where people go for picnic and swimming during the summer half of the year, a shelter is now being constructed. The «gapahuk» will be open all year for everyone to use. It is being built the same way the fishermen and farmers at the west coast of Norway have built boathouses and barns for more than a thousand years!
The City Hall in Haugesund
The city hall in Haugesund is the best example of neoclassical architecture in Norway, and has been elected the most beatiful building in the city. Since 1992 the hall and parts of its park has been preserved according to the law of cultural memorial sites. The monumental building was drawn by the architects Gudol Blakstad and Herman Munthe-Kass. With its characteristic columns, arches and the dome on the roof, the city hall is a result of the strong impression the two architects got during a study trip in Itali in 1921.
The inauguration of the city hall tokk place on October 1st 1931. The front of the building is 60meters long, and from the top of the dome to the ground is 25meters. The total area of the hall is more than 3000 square meters and contains several offices, including meeting rooms and the city council.
Dosbarth Oren
We made salt dough Santas using flour, salt and
water. We moulded them into a face shape and
cooked them in an oven on a low heat for about 2
hrs. We later decorated them using paint and
glitter.
Catholic children in Vienna believe in the„Christkind“. It means we
celebrate the birthday of Jesus. The Christkind brings the Christmas
presents for all children on the 24
th
of December.
Advent , the time before Christmas, is a very long period (especially
for kids). Most oft the children have advent-calendars. There are
different calendars, for example picture calendars where you can
open a window every day and a little picture appears.
Children in Austria also celebrate St. Nikolaus Day
on the 6
th
of December. At school the children do some
drawings and crafts! On the 6
th
of December St. Nikolaus
brings little gifts to all the children at school!
Every year we visit the „Christkindlmarkt“
between „Burgtheater“ and „Rathaus“
(City hall). Inside the Rathaus there are
many craft-stations where children
can produce small presents for Christmas!
This year all children of our school meet on the ground floor
every Monday. Together we sing some Christmas carols.
This year Jadwiga prepared a theatre play with a few
children that was performed on the 5
th
of December!
