Bill Greimel

Bill was arguably one of the best two sport athletes at Highlands. A 3 year starter on the Varsity Football and Baseball Teams, Bill was recognized as the Most Outstanding Athlete of his class of 1975. The Varsity Football teams he anchored from his Offensive Guard and Linebacker positions had a 3 year record of 22wins, 4 losses, and 1 tie. The 1973 football team was the North 1 Group 3 State Sectional Champion and was recognized as the North Jersey Team of the Year.

He garnished numerous accolades including:1st Team All County 19741st Team All Decade for the 1970’s andHonorable Mention All Century Football

To quote Jerry Emison, the Assistant Varsity Football Coach and Bill’s Varsity Baseball Coach, “As I remember Bill, the things that stick out for me were his competitiveness, his toughness, and his ability to make players around him play hard. He led by example and everyday competed to get better.”On the baseball diamond, Bill started at catcher and third base and he was a major contributor on the 1975 N.B.I.A.L. Champion Baseball Team that finished 17-10. He was recognized for his efforts as he was named 1st Team All N.B.I.A.L. and Honorable Mention All County his Senior Season. To quote Coach Emison once again, “He is entering the Hall of Fame because he represents all that is good about Northern Highlands. He is one of the special ones. I’m so proud he played on my teams.”Bill is married to his high school sweetheart Sharon and they have 3 daughters and one grandson. He currently resides in South Jersey and is the Vice President of Construction for a large shopping center developer. His hobbies include Golf, Skiing, Biking, and Home Remodeling Projects.

Katie Kunisch OhnegianField Hockey

Katie Ohnegian was born and raised in Allendale and is the daughter of Barbara and the late Michael Kunisch. She played field hockey at Northern Highland from 1985 until 1988.While at Highlands, she was First Team All League, First Team All County, and First Team All State. She holds most of the school’s goal keeping records, including recording 18 shutouts her senior year. In her junior year, she anchored the team’s defense in goal as the team won the school’s first outright state championship in the Fall of 1986. She was also named to the Bergen Record’s All Decade Team.

Legendary Highlands Coach and fellow NH Hall of Famer Frank DeLuise said, “Katie was the hardest working goalie I ever coached. Her trademark was consistency. You always knew you had a chance to win when she was in goal. In 1986, against a state power in the finals, she blocked 18 shots on goal enabling us to win the only State Championship to this day in Bergen County”.

After her stellar high school career, Katie secured a full athletic scholarship to the University of Miami (Ohio). At Miami, Katie was first team all MAC conference and was the team’s captain her junior and senior year.

After college she went to on to coach at Northern Highlands, first as assistant to Coach DeLuise, then as the head coach. While at the helm at NH the team amassed 7 county championships.

Katie gave up coaching to start a family, and now her team consists of husband Pete, 10 year old twins John and Allison, 8 year old Andrew, and 5 year old Michael. Katie is very active with her children’s Ramsey Schools and is on the executive board of the charity “It’s a Wonderful Life” which supports the Sacred Heart School in Jersey City. She and her siblings own and operate the Mahwah Bar and Grill and the Allendale Bar and Grill, the latter being the gathering spot where NH championships are celebrated and tough losses are commiserated.

Victoria Hands Wasulko

Vicky was a key player on successful Highlands’ field hockey teams in the 1980’s. Vicky was a finesse player who could play both on the wing and inside forward. She started on two Sectional Championship field hockey teams and on the 1986 New Jersey Group 3 state championship team. She was on the State Sectional Championship basketball team in 1988. She was also elected captain of the 1989 basketball team.

Field hockey honors include first team all league, first team all county and second team all state in 1987. That year she scored 24 goals.

Vicky tried out and made the field hockey team for the Garden State Games in New Brunswick after her junior year. During a practice for this event she tore her ACL. Faced with having surgery versus playing with a brace, she chose the latter. Despite this disadvantage she was awarded first team all league, first team all County and Third Team all State her senior year as a defender. Other accolades include being chosen to the 1980’s All Decade Team and the Golden Stick Award. At graduation she received the coaches leadership award.

After her years at Highlands she graduated from Vanderbilt University and attended Columbia University graduate school where she earned her MSW. She began a career as a social worker for Bergen County Special Services.

Vicky married Christopher Wasulko and moved to Charlotte, North Carolina where she and her husband are raising three children. He started a dental practice and she works in a dialysis center. Vicky continues her love for sports learned at Highlands and she now plays competitive tennis.

Brett Steinberg

Brett made an incredible mark as a goalkeeper not only at Northern Highlands but also in Bergen County and the State of New Jersey. Brett set the following school records: best save percentage in a season with 97%, best save percentage in a career with 95%, lowest goals against in a season with a .44, lowest goals against in a career with a .53 average, most consecutive shutouts with 10, most shut outs in a season with 14, most career shutouts with 50, and best record 66-17-6. He even recorded 2 assists from punts. Not only did Brett set the county record with 50 shut outs, he also set the State record for most career shut outs as well. Brett started in net since his freshman year and owned the position from day 1. He helped lead Highlander teams to three consecutive NBIAL Division 2 league titles and two Group 3 State Sectional Titles. His honors are as follows: 1st team All League all four years, 2nd team All-County Sophomore year, 1st team All County his Junior and Senior years, 3rd team All Groups All State his Junior year, 2nd team All Groups All State his Senior year, top 51 players in the State in his Junior and Senior years, NBIAL player of the year in his Senior year, and finally, Brett was chosen by the Bergen Record for both the Team of the Decade and the Team of the Century! He worked on his game, year round training with Walter Gottrel and other great past goalkeepers from the area. This gave Brett the confidence he needed in stopping some of the most prolific scorers not only in our county but also in the state. Brett matured not only as a soccer player on the field where his presence was always known, but off the field as well. He was Highlands’s captain in both his Junior and Senior years – only one other player has had that honor in the Highlands soccer program. He was a young man who has epitomized an athlete’s love and passion for the game and was a fierce competitor. Brett was recruited by schools such as Stockton State, Fairfield, Central Florida, Clemson and American University.

He chose to play at Stockton State College where he won the starting goalkeeper position his freshman year and played in just about every game. At Stockton, he helped lead the Osprey’s to their first ever NCAA D3 Men’s Soccer Championship. He set four NCAA D3 tournament record along the way for least amount of goals in tournament play with 2 over 5 tournament games, lowest goals against average with .4 GA, save percentage with 98%, most shut out/scoreless minutes and games (420 minutes in 5 games) and being one of the few freshman goalkeepers to ever win an NCAA Championship. Irony being he broke his high school off season trainers record for NCAA tournament play record at the same college, only 30 years later!!Today, Brett works for Kemper System America which is high end commercial roofing and waterproofing company. He is the National Sales Director overseeing 50 representatives in North America. In his private life he is newly married and he and his wife are expecting their first child!

Doug Ernst

Doug Ernst (Class of ’01) began swimming before the age of 2 years old. Through the years, he set many records on his club team (Ridgewood Breakers), including 3 regional YMCA records, was a member of the National Team, and was a USA Swimming Scholastic All-American in 2001.At Highlands, Doug only lost one race in 4 years. He set 5 records, was a member of 3 record setting relays, and broke 3 records at the League Meet. Doug led Highlands to 3 League titles, 4 state playoffs qualifiers, and 3 times to the state sectional finals. He was named 1st Team All-Bergen by The Record, and the Star Ledger named him 1st Team All-North Jersey, 1st Team All-Public, and 1st Team All-State.

As a senior in 2001, Doug represented Northern Highlands at the State Meet of Champions, winning the 200 and 500 yard Freestyle, making him the top swimmer in all of New Jersey. In 2010, Doug was elected to the North Jersey All-Decade Team, and was the runner-up for swimmer of the decade.

At Cornell University, Doug was a member of the Varsity Swim Team for 4 years, swimming the 50, 100, 200 and 500 Free, and 100 and 200 Butterfly. He was the member of 4 record setting relays, and still holds one of the top times 100 Fly. Currently, Doug lives in the West Village of Manhattan and works for U.S. Bank.

Doug will be getting married this fall to his fiancé Mary Coleman.

Josh Corn

Josh began his athletic career at Northern Highlands as a three sport athlete, playing football, basketball and baseball. Five games into his freshman year, he took over as varsity catcher of the baseball team. If you had the opportunity to watch Josh dominate a varsity baseball game, you would certainly understand why he decided to stop playing football and eventually basketball at NH.

He was 1st team all-league all four years, a repeat first team all-county and two time all-state junior and senior year. He is the school’s all-time leader in home runs, runs batted in, top three in career batting average and many other offensive statistical categories. He was also a game changer defensively; teams stopped trying to steal and take extra bases because of his arm strength and accuracy.

What can’t be measured was his heart and passion. He is a winner and was a difference maker for our baseball program.

Josh continued his playing career at Stanford University and at the University of Pennsylvania. In his Junior season he was named all-Ivy and was the Big Five player of the week. He was the captain of the UPenn baseball team in his senior year.

Besides being an accomplished athlete, Josh is also an extremely intelligent, caring and well rounded individual. He was involved with numerous school functions and community service projects at Northern Highlands. He served as the Northern Highlands student council secretary during his junior year and was the President of the National Honor Society. For his academic and athletic accomplishments Josh was recognized as NH’s male recipient for the NBIAL student athlete scholar of the year.

Josh is currently finishing up his MBA in Finance at Georgetown’s McDonough School of Business. He will be working for Barclay’s investment banking group in Chicago starting in August.Previously he worked for Evercore in their Private Wealth Management Division in NY for 3 years and for EIM Fund of Funds group in NY for 2 years.

1991 Girls Soccer TeamNBIAL, Bergen County, North 1 Group 3 & New Jersey

State Champions

Coach – Greg McDonald

GIRLS VARSITY SOCCER

The 1991 season began on a down note - a loss at Indian Hills. The team rallied under the leadership of new head coach Greg (Mac) McDonald, senior captains Stacey Rennard and Danica Welton, and their fellow seniors Cassie Abodeely and Jill Frank to go capture the league title, and upset #1 seed Ridgewood to win the school’s third Bergen County championship. The Highlanders ended a long-standing Ramapo jinx in the State tournament 2-1. The sectional final was played in front of a largely male, trash talking crowd at Wayne Valley; Jill Frank silenced them by knocking in a Lisa Fink pass for a goal and a 1-0 win. The state semifinal match produced new heroes; Keri Chisholm gave the Highlanders a 1-0 lead over West Morris Central and Cassie Abodeely stopped a penalty shot, while the game was still hanging in the balance for the win.. In the State final, the Highlanders fell behind Ewing on a penalty kick. Anny Madden countered with a beautiful free kick over the Ewing wall and just under the cross bar for a 1-1 draw, and a share of the 1991 New Jersey State Group 3 Championship. The team finished with a 20-1-4 record and was ranked 4th in the final Star Ledger poll.

1992 Girls Soccer TeamNBIAL, Bergen County, North 1 Group 3 & New Jersey

State Champions

Coach – Greg McDonald

Northern Highlands was ranked in the top 10 nationally in the preseason USA Today soccer poll. Then reality set in, as Ramapo burst the Highlands bubble and dreams of an undefeated season on a penalty kick. The team quickly rallied, and ran off 22 straight wins. Ridgewood and Ramapo were once again the highest hurdles in the county and Highlands defeated both to make it back-to-back county championships. The 1992 team, led by high-scoring co-captains, Courtney Jareck and Anny Madden, was an offensive juggernaut, netting 110 goals. The defense was brilliant, too, surrendering only 9 goals. The state match with Ramapo went 0-0 after regulation and overtime. In the shootout which followed, Courtney Jareck, Jen Snider, and Lindsay Minkus each converted their penalty kicks, and Karyn Hildebrandt stopped the final Ramapo shooter to give Highlands the win. In the State final, a strong Hillsborough side bunkered down and let Highlands shoot from outside, waiting for one opportunity to counterattack – that opportunity came in the final minute of overtime. It took a Mary Ann Sadowski sliding tackle in the penalty area to preserve a 0-0 tie and a share of the state title. The team finished 23-1-1, a school record. They were once again ranked 4th in New Jersey, and they were ranked as high as #9 in the USA Today poll. Together, the 1991 and 1992 teams established Highlands as one of Jersey’s elite girls soccer programs and set a standard against which future Highlander teams would be compared.

Jim and Mary WeltonContributors

Jim and Mary Welton arrived on the Highlands campus back in 1988 when their daughter Danica was a freshman. Her role in Hello Dolly led to a multi-decade passion of the Welton’s. Through Danica and later Ashlee’s involvement in musicals, the Weltons contributed their time and tremendous talent to the arts at Northern Highlands.

Mary signed up first, offering “costume help” with measuring tapes, ironing boards, a sewing machine and an eye for both color and coordination that helped to outfit every cast in high style. From bloomers, baseball uniforms, and business attire, to Western gear, sailor suits, and period pieces Mary worked with four different directors and outfitted 24 casts over two decades to create those memorable ensembles.

It wasn’t long before Mary roped Jim in to build sets and take photos of each show. He dabbled during South Pacific; soon enough he was fully committed to the construction crew.

Although their girls graduated, Jim and Mary continued to coordinate costumes, construct scenery, and commemorate each show through photography. They were instrumental in the early years of the Music and Performing Arts Association and the establishment of the Cultural Arts Center. Mary helped out with Madrigals and later, Voices; Jim volunteered to help find a new music teacher with the hopes of rebuilding a marching band. Jim continues to recruit helpers to build whatever the Regiment needs for its shows. Both Mary and Jim love watching Highlands’ music programs continue to reach new heights. They are very appreciative of the great support given by the administration, parents and community to our talented students and faculty.

Al SniderContributor

Al Snider is a wonderfully unique individual. In addition to his keen intellect he is truly a man of his word. When Al makes a commitment he undertakes the commitment fully.

Al and his incredibly supportive bride Joyce were married in Cedar Rapids, Iowa in 1966 and have two children, Jeff a 1990 Northern Highlands graduate and Jen who graduated Highlands in 1993. After earning his PhD at Stanford, Al and Joyce moved to New Jersey and he began his professional career as an assistant professor at New York University. His career has spanned research and teaching, public service, and philanthropy. Al and his family moved to Allendale in 1978 and his ongoing connection to Highlands has been through the girls’ soccer. He started attending games in 1982 when his daughter Jen started playing recreation soccer, and he was hooked. He helped coach Jen’s rec team and after fine tuning his coaching skills teamed with Jim Ryan to coach his daughter’s American Soccer Club team from 1985 to 1990; the girls on that team would go on to form the core of the 1991 and 1992 Bergen County and N.J. State championship teams. Al served as a volunteer assistant to Greg McDonald from 1993 to 1999. Since 1999 he has volunteered as a scout for the Highlands girls’ soccer team and since his retirement in 2007 he has worked closely with Tara Madigan and his scouting for that team has evolved into his “day job” during the fall season. Tara describes Al “as essential to our program in both his scouting and his spirit. He is focused, caring and knows each past and current player by name.”

Al has enjoyed a distinguished and very fulfilling professional career. During his career he served as the General Secretary of the International Conference on Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders from 1989 to 1998 and was recognized for his contributions with an award from the Alzheimer’s Association for which he is very proud. He served two terms as a Director of the American Federation for Aging Research and was honored by the “Spanish Speaking Elderly Council” for his contribution to the expansion of Spanish language and culturally appropriate services for New York City’s large Hispanic elderly population. He was elected a Fellow of the New York Academy of Medicine in 2005. Al’s final professional assignment was as Executive Director and CEO of the JARVIE Commonweal Service, a foundation dedicated to meeting the needs of the elderly.

In 2009 he teamed with Chris Kunisch to found the Northern Highlands Hall of Fame. In addition Al has created a comprehensive record for each Highlands sport and the achievements of our most celebrated athletes. To quote Chris Kunisch “Al is an encyclopedia of Northern Highlands knowledge and forgot more about Northern Highlands yesterday than I will ever know.”

Lois is well known for her dedicated service to the Northern Highlands DECA chapter, which began in 1970 with Lois as the advisor to the seven students in her Marketing Cooperative Work Experience Program. The NH DECA Chapter grew to 150 students by 2001. In 1973 NH DECA had its first National DECA Winner. In the years that followed, NH DECA has had numerous regional, state, and national winners.

Don RyanContributor - Teachers and Administrators

Don Ryan began his public teaching career at Teaneck High School in the early 60s before coming to Highlands in 1967. As the first Chairman of the English Department, he brought his philosophy of a student-centered curriculum to the school, a philosophy that is in evidence 50 years later.

Don encouraged the teachers he helped hire to design semester-length courses around themes, and using books, that they loved. Students were able to select from a smorgasbord of offerings, from Existentialism (Don’s favorite) to Animals in Literature. An additional innovation he introduced was the mixing of grade levels within these courses, breaking away from the traditional segregation of sophomores, juniors, and seniors.

Since Don believed that students reach mastery of composition by writing much and writing often, he encouraged his colleagues in other disciplines, through seminars he conducted, to assign both formal and informal writing assignments. Don also created a Writing Center in the school, where students could bring pieces they had written – from college application essays to papers they had written for any course – for feedback. Other schools in the area soon followed his lead.

After retiring from Highands in 1988, Don continued teaching – English Composition and Philosophy – at Sussex Community college, finishing last spring a teaching career that spanned 68 years!

A tribute to Don Ryan must not end without talking about his character, which was unimpeachable. Many of his colleagues, in their admiration of his integrity and their recognition of his early days in a seminary, referred to him privately as “Father Ryan.” Toward the teachers in his department and to all of his colleagues and his students, he was giving to a fault, and never judgmental.

Don and his wife Barbara are longtime residents of Sparta, NJ, where they raised three children: Don, Jr., Stephen, and Cathy.

John PietrowskiContributor - Teachers and Administrators

The Legendary Coach John Pietrowski “Pize” was the first ever soccer coach at Northern Highlands. He coached the Boys Soccer program for 27 years from 1966-1992. Under his leadership they compiled an overall record of 287 wins, 134 losses and 43 ties. He is considered one of the most successful coaches in Highlands’ history. John Pietrowski was one of the original teachers and coaches when Northern Highlands opened in 1965. He came to Highlands as an industrial arts teacher. Before coming to Northern Highlands, John was at River Dell Regional High School.

Coach Pize’s soccer teams won 10 NBIAL championships, in addition to 4 state sectional championships. His 1967 team advanced to the final of the New Jersey State Group 2 tournament. His 1983 and 1986 teams placed 2nd in the County Tournament. His commitment to his teams was the core of his success. He was named Suburban Coach of the Year 4 times.

In 1983, Coach Pize took over coaching the girl’s basketball team. The 1986-1987 team reached the County Finals and the 1987-1988 team won the North 1 Group 3 Sectional championship.

Coach Pize was inducted into the New Jersey Soccer Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1989 and the Bergen County Boys Soccer Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2000.

After retiring from Northern Highlands, Coach Pize went on to coach at Mercer County Community College where he still coaches today. During his 15 years as an MCCC assistant coach, the team has won more than 230 games and 3 national championships. In 2008 John was inducted into the MCCC soccer hall of fame.

Today John lives in Ewing, NJ . He enjoys golf and painting.

Christian Rudner

From the students and colleagues of Donald J. Ryan: He taught and inspired us all.

“We mark with light in the memory the few interviews we have had with souls that made our souls wiser, that spoke what we thought, that told us what we knew, that gave us leave to be what we inly are” — Ralph Waldo Emerson

From Don Ryan: “I regret that illness keeps me from sharing the joy that must attend the Hall of Fame Banquet. The honor belongs to a truly magnificent English faculty. I was privileged, over twenty-three years, to work with a cadre of intelligent, imaginative, generous, indefatigable and dedicated teachers. Day after day, week after week, and yes, after months and years, I was

privileged to witness truly admirable ‘buddies’ who were my models in teaching and my support in friendship.

“I was not alone in my admiration of a Faculty I was blessed with: Many, many parents won the respect and admiration for the hundreds of teachers who so tirelessly devoted themselves to their ‘offspring.’”

Northern Highlands Hall of Fame Distinguished Alumnus

Class of 1981 Many fond memories of you growing up in Upper Saddle River, enjoying your Northern Highlands academic and athletic successes. You played football, winter track and baseball, lead the NH Student Council as President and even sang in the Concert Choir. You “did Highlands well.” We watched you go on to Princeton with pride, the University of Louisville Medical School and then on to your honorable career as a cardio-vascular surgeon. We are especially proud because you remain the same gentle, kind, humble man who is close to your God. We wish your Dad were here to share in your special day, Mark. He remains so proud of you. May our Lord always bless you and your hands that give so much life to others.
