NEED TO KNOW

● New lesson changes ahead! We’re finalizing the new lesson format, so make sure to look through the whole lesson plan and familiarize yourself with the new look. Don’t worry though–the structure of the hour is still the same.

GAME TIME | 10 Minutes

● Play a fun food-themed game of “Would You Rather?”

COOL DOWN | 10 Minutes

● Transition and cool down by playing a game and discussing how Jesus has provided for us.

LARGE GROUP | 15 Minutes

● Respond to today’s big idea through worship and prayer.● Practice this month’s memory verse: Mark 10:27 Jesus looked at them and said, “With

people this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God.

SMALL GROUP | 15+ Minutes

● Personally connect with kids and apply the story to their lives through a fish and bread craft that incorporates today’s next step: Ask Jesus for something you need.

LARGE GROUP | 15 Minutes

● Introduce today’s big idea, Jesus Can Do Anything, through the story of Jesus feeding the 5000.

● Scripture: John 6:1-14

Page 2: 3rd-5th · 2019. 2. 8. · MARCH 2-3, 2019 3rd-5th NEED TO KNOW New lesson changes ahead! We’re finalizing the new lesson format, so make sure to look through the whole lesson plan

● (Click to show Big Idea slide) Here’s today’s BIG IDEA: Jesus can do anything!

● Say: Jesus can overcome any problem we have, because he’s our creator, and he can do miracles that only God can do. And today, we’re going to hear an incredible story of Jesus’ power that has to do with….FOOD!

● Ask: Raise your hand if you like food! (Let kids respond.) Yeah, I thought so. Let’s watch a fun movie clip about a a group of kids who are eating a feast, and end up in a food fight!

● Video: Hook / Food Fight (2 minutes)● Ask: How would you all like to be in a food fight like that? (Let kids respond.)

Yep, that would be amazing, and pretty gross! Those kids didn’t actually have any real food though….they had to imagine they have it! And in today’s story, a whole crowd of people don’t have any food either. But instead of imagining that they have food, Jesus does something miraculous.

● Say: One day, Jesus was traveling. And because he healed people and did amazing miracles everywhere he went….A LOT of people followed him around. And on this day, more than 5000 people followed Jesus up on a mountain! Just try to imagine how many people that is!

● Say: Now I don’t know about you, but when I go hiking up a mountain all day, I get hungry! And that’s exactly what happened to all these people. They needed food, but there was nothing close by to eat!

● Say: Let’s watch a video and see what happened next. As you watch, pay special attention to what Jesus does to feed all these people.

● Video: Storytellers / Feeding the 5000 (4 minutes)● Ask: So HOW do you think Jesus was able to feed 5000 people with just five

loaves of bread and two fish? (Let kids respond.) Yep, he was able to do it because he’s God! He can do amazing things that NO ONE else can do. Things that don’t make sense, or seem impossible! And he does them because he loves us, and wants to provide for us.

● Give the choices on the following page, and have kids walk to one side of the room to show which they choose. If you’re limited on space or want kids to stay in their spot, have them choose by jumping or sitting down, etc.)

● Would You Rather...○ Eat pizza, or ice cream?○ Eat popcorn, or chips?○ Swim in a pool of jelly, or peanut butter?○ Eat a whole jar of mustard, or smother your whole head in ketchup? ○ Eat mashed potatoes every day for breakfast, or waffles everyday for dinner?○ Eat only bread for the rest of your life, or only fish?○ Take a bath in a tub full of salt, or pepper?○ Wash your hair with whipped cream, or chocolate milk?

“Everyday Items” and “Anything”.○ Each kid gets to throw a token onto the paper.○ Wherever the token lands, they have to say a specific example of something Jesus has

given them that fits that category.○ Family: parents or guardians, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, cousins, foster

families, etc.○ Friends: specific friends from school, neighbors, etc.○ Everyday items: things that Jesus gives you everyday (i.e. not people)○ Anything: Give an answer of anything that Jesus has provided for you!

● Play the 10-Second Countdown Timer to help redirect kids attention.● Ask: Who can remember our big idea? (Call on a kid to respond). Yep: Jesus

can do anything! Let’s check out a verse from the book of Mark that sums this up pretty well.

● Slide: Mark 10:27 Jesus looked at them and said, “With people this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God.

● Say: “All things are possible with God.” If there’s anything that you remember from today, it’s that all things are possible with God. Jesus can heal the sick, feed 5000 people out of nothing, and he even rose from the dead! No one in the world has ever done that, except for Jesus.

● Say: We all need things, just like people needed food in today’s story. Have you ever needed something in your life? Something that you didn’t have right then? Raise your hand if so. (Talk about a concrete personal example of something you have needed in the past, or something you need right now, and how you asked Jesus to provide in that situation, or how he DID provide.)

● Say: No matter what you’re facing, Jesus has to power to take care of you and help you through it. He’s an all powerful God AND totally human. There’s nothing that’s too big for him, or too hard for him to handle. Nothing that will make him give up on you.

● Say: When Jesus created food for all those people, he didn’t just make enough food to feed them. He made MORE than enough! He made so much food, there were 12 baskets full of leftovers! That’s the kind of God we have. A God who gives us even more than we need, because he loves us.

● Say: Right now, think about what all of this means for you. What’s something that you need Jesus’ to provide. It could be a big thing, or a tiny thing. Maybe you just need Jesus to comfort you. Maybe you need him to provide something really big. Whatever it is, get it in your mind right now as we watch this worship video, praising Jesus for all he’s given us!

● Music Video: Freedom (3 minutes)● Pray: Jesus, thank you for loving us so much that you heal the sick, and rise

from the dead. We love you for feeding all those people when they were hungry, and for helping us when we need it. Amen!

○ How would you feel? ○ How do you think Jesus felt? ○ What did he do? ○ What do you think the little boy was thinking/feeling when he offered his lunch?

● What did the disciples say when the boy brought his food? (They laughed! They thought there’s no way that tiny amount of food could feed them all!)
