END OF THE OLD GRAINY COLOR FRAME FROM THE 70s

    INT. CHURCH - DAY

SOMEONE sits in the confessional box.

The Catholic PRIEST (70) notices that SOME MAN talks to NOBODY.

PRIESTSon,if you need a confession I can take it for you.

DANIEL(O.S) I would prefer to talk directly to Him.

PRIEST (cont'd)Well, son, it is through me that you can talk with Him.

DANIEL(O.S)I understand, but I prefer to have a private conversation anyway, OK?

The priest looks at Daniel curiously but sends him a virtual blessing by making the sign of the cross over him.

    INT. DANIEL'S APARTMENT - NIGHT

A view of the studio apartment. There are a lot of books about screenwriting on the shelf, along with some scripts.

(Printed with an unregistered version of Fade In)

  • A pro-gun POSTER on the wall reads: THE SECOND AMENDMENT IS NOT ABOUT HUNTING DEER - IT IS ABOUT STOPPING THUGS FROM HUNTING YOUR FAMILY.

Next to the poster there is A GUN PERMIT IN A FRAME.

A MAN, covered with blankets on the bed, coughs. While sleeping he accidentally drops a bottle of pills on the floor.

The pill reads "cough relief". An ancient script, with some sort of sticker on it, lies to the floor.

INT. DANIEL'S APARTMENT - NEAR THE COMPUTER DESK

The chat app automatically pops up on the screen of the computer. The chair at the computer table is empty. The man, in bed, continues to sleep. The chat session on the computer starts. The sound of typing on a keyboard can be heard.

The user, nick-named Producer, types away.

    MESSAGE ON THE SCREEN

    Producer-"HOW ABOUT A MEETING AT 9PM TONIGHT?"

    The user WRITER answers "WHERE?"

Producer- "AT THE RESTAURANT ON SANTA-MONICA PIER."

    Writer answers "I'll be there."

The Producer answers "Great. Here is my number, 987-654-3210, but please don't call unless it's urgent. I'll call you if I'm running late".

The man continues to sleep in the bed. His SOUL flies toward the apartment balcony.

The first signs of morning appear in the sky. Red and yellow fill the horizon.

Daniel's DREAMING SOUL starts flying toward the PACIFIC OCEAN. His SOUL looks up to the zenith of the sky.

DANIEL(V.O)Where are you?Why you left me alone?I can't take it any more. At least do something with this old pathetic nobody, help me... or at least take away all of this mess of ideas and

EXT. SANTA MONICA - PIER - RESTAURANT - EVENING

Daniel reaches the restaurant at the end of the pier just as it is closing. A HISPANIC JANITOR (30) is taking out bags of trash and placing them by the dumpsters.

Daniel looks around; the janitor gives him a puzzled look.

Daniel dials a number on his cell phone and waits a while for the person to answer; instead, he hears a beep to leave a voicemail message.

DANIELOh, hi! Daniel Dough again. I'm still at the pier. Ill hang out here for 15 minutes or so. Call me back! Thanks!

Suddenly the shaggy dog from the sidewalk on Venice Beach appears, jumps up on Daniel from behind, and starts licking his neck.

DANIELGet out of here, leave me alone!

HOMELESS MANAah! Just don't hurt the dog! Animal cruelty is considered a federal offense!

The homeless man comes closer to Daniel/Producer and pulls back the hood of his jacket. He is Daniel's DOPPELGANGER.

Daniel/Producer looks at him, amazed, picks up the phone from the ground and backs away.

    DANIEL/PRODUCERWho are you?!

DANIEL/HOMELESS MANMe? Me? Who am I? I could ask you the same question!

But anyway, I guess you're higher in society than I am. I'm your worst nightmare!

    (jokingly,imitating German accent)

    "Brat-worst" alptraum...

Daniel/producer looks at his phone and at the restaurant, feels threatened. THE HOMELESS MAN looks at his OLD-FASHIONED CLASSIC DIGITAL WATCH.

    PRODUCERWhat do you mean?

HOMELESS MANI'm your alternate destiny. Let's put it that way.

6.(Printed with an unregistered version of Fade In)

  • PRODUCERHmm, OK. So, what do you want?

Daniel/Homeless Man pulls out a bottle of cheap vodka from the side of his cart and takes a swig.

HOMELESS MANYou think I want your fucking money? Not that crap! I just want to remind you of when we went our separate ways. It was 1980, at a restaurant in Beverly Hills, the "Royal Hill". Remember?

Daniel/Producer thinks about his question, scratching his head.

    PRODUCERRoyal Hill--Royal Hill? Hmmm...

Daniel/Homeless man puts the bottle of vodka back in the cart and starts to get agitated. He picks up a plastic doll's head and shows it to the producer.

HOMELESS MANDon't tell me you got an intracranial neoplasm in your melon and don't remember!

The janitor brings more bags of trash to the dumpster.

HOMELESS MANHey, amigo, can you bring us some fancy vodka from the restaurant? My twin brother is gonna pay for it. I know you guys have plenty of it in your storeroom.

The janitor does not pay any attention to the producer or the homeless guy.

HOMELESS MANHey, hombre are you deaf, or what?

PRODUCERHe may not speak English - and besides that I'm not gonna drink anything.

HOMELESS MANWhy not? One shot can jar your memory and make you recall what happened at

    summer of 1980 ..

PRODUCER (cont'd)OK, OK, you got me! I remember! Actually, it was always on my mind.

(pause)Thats where it all began. My life did a one-eighty then.

The homeless man and the producer watch as a plane takes off over the ocean. Daniel/Homeless man looks at his watch again.

    Great job! Amazing script!

DANIEL-PRODUCER (V.O)Then, at our first meeting, the famous Hollywood producer Robert Clareman said he fell in love with my screenplay and offered me a job.

    EXT. FILM STUDIO - DAY

Young Daniel stands in front of the "Robert Clareman Film" production studio.

A pretty secretary (the same young girl from the yacht whose picture is in the pendant hanging in the car) hands him the screenplay with a label on it "Return to Author".

DANIEL-HOMELESS MAN (V.O.) (cont'd)Though for some, hitting rock bottom can turn out to be the best thing, not the worst. I conquered the Himalayas, traversed the jungles of Costa Rica, was frozen by icy winds in the north, and was bitten by poisonous snakes. I enjoyed life as it should be enjoyed.

EXT. SANTA MONICA - PIER - EVENING

The homeless man brings his cart back and starts rummaging through it.

HOMELESS MANOh well, let's not reminisce too much. What are you doing on the pier so late?

PRODUCERI'm supposed to meet a screenwriter here, but he's running late. (pause)And this purebred dog really isn't yours, right? Probably you stole it?

HOMELESS MANDon't keep jabbering - tell me what kind of writer, a really promising one?

    PRODUCERAre you curious?

HOMELESS MANYea, I am fucking curious!

PRODUCERWell, we've been in touch over the Internet for two years. He's got a very special script for me.

The homeless man finds a woman's bag in a pile of garbage in his cart. He takes out an old, wrinkled, and torn copy of a screenplay.

He sees that someone has placed a "Return to Author" sticker over the title.

HOMELESS MANReally? Cause I gotta script for you too.

Daniel/producer does not even look at the script he shows him.

15.(Printed with an unregistered version of Fade In)

  • PRODUCERLike I said it's a VERY special script.

HOMELESS MANAnd whats so special about it? I'm dying to know!

    PRODUCER(looking at his watch)

Well, I should have left a long time ago, but it seems you want to hold me up by talking to me.

The dog runs up and sits down, looking between the homeless man and the producer. The homeless man scratches the dog with the folded script.

HOMELESS MAN(also looking at his own watch)

Well, let's just say I'm in no hurry to go anywhere.

PRODUCERh, OK. Well, in the script he was somehow able to describe my life in great detail, things that only I would know. I'm wondering, where did he get all that information?

HOMELESS MANI bet he got connected to the Akashic records, to the so-called internal dimension.

PRODUCERInternal dimension?! What the hell is that?

The homeless man takes an LA map out of his pocket and then puts it back.

HOMELESS MANCheck this out! If we pretend that this map is our world, then the pocket would be that internal dimension.

(pause)Or what do those people in church call it?

16.(Printed with an unregistered version of Fade In)

  • The homeless man assumes a praying pose and looks up at the sky.

HOMELESS MAN (cont'd)The eternal home beyond the plane of existence...

The dog sits on the ground. The homeless man points out to the producer that under the streetlight only the dog's shadow is visible on the boardwalk, not theirs.

HOMELESS MAN (cont'd)We also think that we're here right now, but it could be that we aren't. We could just be somewhere in the imagination of some sick, freaky guy. Or maybe of God?

The homeless man and the producer walk to the very edge of the pier.

They look toward the ocean at the blood-colored sun and watch a plane taking off from LAX.

The homeless man looks AGAIN at his OLD-FASHIONED CLASSIC DIGITAL WATCH...

    MICHAELglances at the (passenger side)

Don't worry, man! Even if we are a little late, I don't think he'll leave right away.(pause) Shit! What horrible traffic! Goddamn LA!

The van swerves sharply into the left lane.

The passenger coughs horribly. Michael looks at him regretfully.

  • EXT. SANTA MONICA - PIER - EVENING

The Producer and the homeless man walk along the edge of the pier. The producer tries to avoid bumping into and touching the homeless man.

PRODUCERAlso, the screenwriter wrote that my life will end abruptly.

HOMELESS MANLife is such a pitiful state, even if it ends, we shouldn't regret it. By the way, I came here, to this pier, to settle the score with my pathetic existence.

Daniel/homeless man makes a "cut-throat" gesture with the side of his hand across his neck.

HOMELESS MAN (cont'd)But since I met you, I've delayed my plan for maybe a half an hour...

The homeless man tries to hug Daniel.

Daniel keeps his distance, he won't allow the homeless man to hug him - not with those dirty hands.

HOMELESS MAN (cont'd)Let's walk around here for about ten minutes more. Tell me more about yourself.

The dog sneaks in between them.

A sunbeam breaks through the clouds, irritating their eyes. They glance toward the sun, shielding their eyes with their hands.

PRODUCERAnd what else can I tell you about me - I'd also like to live the life of an average guy, just like you. I'm tired of all this luxury, of hypocrisy and plastic friends from the movie business.

PRODUCER (cont'd)I am sick of how they compete in this rat race. Screeching, and biting each others' tails, to be the first, to not let others succeed.

18.(Printed with an unregistered version of Fade In)

  • (pause)PRODUCER (cont'd)

How great it would be to sink to the bottom of the ocean, turn into a deep-sea fish and never see the light of day again..

    HOMELESS MAN(sarcasticly)

Right, and who said that "nothingness" is worse than being?

The homeless man smiles. He slaps Daniel's back. The stain from his grimy hand remains on the producer's clean white shirt.

HOMELESS MAN (cont'd)And that's it! Enjoy the sunset of your life! It's good to know that when the sun sets, all your suffering will end.

(pause)What a great expression! (in a drawling voice)"Suuunset oof my liiife"!!

The REAL DANIEL(60), dressed in a painter's uniform in the passenger seat of the van, nervously unbuckles his seat belt and opens the van door.

MICHAELIs it worth being upset over this? You've been writing screenplays for like forever and you got nothing! Do you think it will be different this time?

    DANIEL/PAINTERWe'll see, Mike!

Daniel/painter slams the van door behind him.

    MICHAEL(after him)

That producer could have called you by now, but he hasn't!

    (Aside,quietly, trying not be heard)

You probably dreamed up this producer, just like you did the last time.

EXT. SANTA MONICA - PIER - EVENING

Daniel hurries to the restaurant on the pier; he looks around. A janitor places trash bags beside the dumpster.

    DANIEL-PAINTER(to the janitor) )

Hey man, have you seen a rich looking guy?

JANITORNo one is here, sir. I've been working here for half an hour and haven't seen anybody.

    (pause) Other than this dog.

    The driver, Michael, approaches Daniel.

MICHAELSo, the whole thing was because of your new script?

DANIEL/PAINTERYou know, in this script I described everything that I saw in that dream -it was so real! I just know that the producer exits.

(pause)I was in touch with him last night-I haven't lost my mind yet!

MICHAELAlright. I understand that. Forget about it.

    Daniel/painter is frustrated.

Daniel gestures with his hands to prove his point. Michael steps back and becomes very serious.

DANIELIt was for real, man! It wasn't a dream!

MICHAELOK, OK, Dan. I believe you! Everything is gonna be all right!

Daniel looks at the ground like he lost all hope.

DANIEL/PAINTERI wasn't able to get a career or fame in this life, not even a tiny bit of success!

MICHAELDon't worry about a career, Dan. There are more important things in life than fame and success!

DANIELEven if we leave fame and glory aside let's take a look at what I do have. Nothing! The business is yours, the van is yours ...

    Daniel pulls at his uniform.

DANIEL (cont'd)Even this fucking piece of fabric is yours!!

Daniel coughs. He takes tablets with "Cough relief" written on them from his pocket.

DANIEL (cont'd)This stuff I have isn't bronchitis, but lung cancer ... I know that deep inside.

MICHAELCome on, Dan! Stop all this and get yourself to a doctor. I'm sure he'll tell you that it's just bronchitis... Let's get drunk and forget about all of this. Come on man, calm down.

DANIELI'll calm down when I'm in the ground...

Mike hugs Daniel and maneuvers him toward the parking lot. Daniel frees himself from Michael's grasp and continues coughing...

    MICHAELLet's get to "Last Hop"

The two men walk slowly to their van.

The dog runs after them, jumping and whimpering. Michael notices a tag on the dog's collar and takes a closer look.

The tag reads: "Mister T", owned by Robert Clareman of Robert & Mr. T Film Production Tel.310-012-3456"

    MICHAEL (cont'd)Look, there's a tag on the dog's collar.

The lights of the circus on Santa Monica beach flash.

    BACK TO THE PARKING LOT

Daniel continues to stare at the tag on the dog's collar, his eyes wide in amazement:

SUDDENLY, the earth under Daniel's feet melts away and a huge smile appears on his face. Night turns into day. It seems that he is flying above the ocean shore. Behind him are palm trees - in paradise.

Daniel/Homeless man, along with his dog, is also smiling and seems to float in the air... Next to him is a smiling Daniel/Producer, who twirls in the air as if he is dancing...

DANIEL(V.O)(sounds like an echo from afar)

    My cough is gone...

(sounds like an echo from afar)And the Oscar goes to... Daniel Dough.

Wild applause is heard. Daniel, in a white shirt, stands on stage, illuminated by the projectors. He holds the statue of the OSCAR over his head, smiling and bowing.

A close-up of Daniel and the statue comes into full view.

    A dog howls from afar.
