• Watched 3D Printing Special on “How It’s Made” with my wife, and we were amazed!

• Decided we needed this technology to fully round-out the business, started pursuing it.

• Introduced to 3D Printing in 2009 by ACME Design, Inc. owner Clint Boruki – Elgin, IL.

• Since then, added 3D Printing to DDD’s offered services!

• (Additive Manufacturing) Vs. “Subtractive Manufacturing” (Standard)

• Make a 3D object, typically from a big block of material that you machine (or cut away) from until the desired 3D object is left behind.

What is 3D Printing?

• Many pro’s to additive vs. cons w/subtractive– Only use as much material as needed– No chips. Dust – not as messy– Not as noisy– Can be safer– No worn cutters…

• Numerous other names/Different Processes: Stereolithography, FDM, Granular, SLA, etc…

When did 3D Printing Start?

• In 1984, Chuck Hull (3D Systems Corp.) made the first commercial rapid prototyping technology, coined the term “Stereolithography” and created the .STL File Format.

• He got the idea when using UV light to harden tabletop coatings.

• Patent issued in 1986 for “photopolymer” process.• Use vat of liquid polymer and light beam to

activate “Voxels” (A Volumetric Pixel.)

Why Do We Use 3D Printing?

• Rapid Prototyping – So we can see and try an idea by having a 3D part made before investing in expensive tooling (molds).

• This is highly wanted and needed by inventors, manufacturers, tweakers even hobbyists!

• Used in custom manufacturing (Non-volume production) Dental, Medical, Bio-Tech, Prosthetics…even Fashion, Yes - Baking, EVERYWHERE CREATIVE THINGS ARE DONE!

How Do You 3D Print Something?

• Since around the late ‘70’s there were only a few additive processes invented.

• They were Big, Expensive Machines with very limited capabilities.

• Now, there are MANY additive manufacturing processes available: FDM, SLM, DMLS, EBF, SLS, SLA, SHS, LOM, etc…

• And you can print in just about any material imaginable today!

What Types of Printers and Materials are Available for 3D Printing?

• Extrusion (FDM) – Fused Deposition Modeling…Thermoplastics: ABS, PLA, PVA, Nylon, HDPE, Rubber, Silicone, Porcelain…

• Wire (EBF) – Electronic Beam Fabrication…Metal Alloys• Granular (DMLS) Direct Metal Laser Sintering…(EBM) Electron-Beam

Melting…(SLM) Selective Laser Melting…(SHS) Selective Heat Sintering…(SLS) Selective Laser Sintering) – Titanium/Metal Alloys, Powders, Ceramic Powders

• Plaster Printing - (PP) Powder Bed w/Inkjet Head• Laminated Object Manufacturing - (LOM) - Paper, metal foil, plastic

film• Photopolymer - (DLP, SLA) – Digital Light Processing,

Stereolithography…Light Polymerized (Curing a liquid into a solid with ultraviolet/laser light)

How Exactly is 3D Printing Done?

• Obtain (or hire) a 3D Printer (DDD, Shapeways, iMaterialize…)

• You Will Need an .STL file:– Draw the 3D file to be printed, (Blender, Sketchup,

Solidworks…) or– Download it, (Thingiverse, GrabCAD, TurboSquid…) or– Scan it using a 3D scanner, 123DCatch, Acute3D…

• Slice the 3D model (Skeinforge, Slic3r, ReplicatorG…) for the toolpath/Gcode

• Set up the 3D printer and Print it out!

Who is 3D Printing For?

• EVERYBODY!!! Not just Designers, Architects, etc…• Kids – Toys (or their broken/lost pieces!), Custom Lego’s,

Organizers, games…• Tinkerers – Model car/plane pieces, RC hobbyist, Robotics…• Inventors – Prototypes, custom tools, fixtures• Manufacturers – Molds, sample parts, design tweaks, short

runs• Anybody who has a home workshop…Make household parts:

Shower curtain rings, flower pots, Wall decorations, holiday trinkets, Yes - even remote battery covers and door stops!

What does the future hold for 3D Printing?

• The sky (for once) is NOT the limit!• This is the technology that we’ve always

dreamed of – only seen in MOVIES up until now!

• There has been a big open-source movement in this field, making it incredibly affordable and obtainable by anybody.

• With costly tooling and manufacturing processes, companies and individuals have been selective about time and money invested in product design and revision. Now, those barriers have been broken so we can all create and produce to our heart’s content…Finally!!!

• This new FREEDOM is ushering in a huge wave of design and creativity that is unbridled and unstoppable!

• This will revolutionize everything from the construction industry (3D Print homes on the Moon, anybody?) to the Medical Industry (Print an ear, nose, even limbs!) It will revolutionize the Manufacturing of any and all products from now on.
