It is a non- profit organization founded in 1991 by parents of children with disabilities in Newton to support the City of Newton’s therapeutic recreation program.

The Newton Parks & Recreation Department has been providing year-round recreation programs for individuals with disabilities for over 39 years. A forerunner in community-based therapeutic recreation programs for people with disabilities, the department currently serves over 300 athletes with disabilities each year. The Newton Parks and Recreation Department would like to thank and congratulate all of the athletes, coaches, volunteers and families on another great year.

Tonight we celebrate a year’s worth of fun, friendship, and community – a gathering worthy of its Golden Gala title. Behind every successful program there is a committed group of volunteers and partner organizations. This year we recognize two partners who have, year over year, directly contributed to the success of our programs. Jan Lewis has been an integral part of Camp Echo Bridge for over two decades and has supported hundreds of campers, improving their camp experience and their lives. Newton’s Finest have earned our respect for their law enforcement work, but they have also gone beyond their day-to-day duties, having supported our work over many decades and tonight we are pleased to honor the professionals of the Newton Police Department.

As you participate in our awards ceremony tonight you will gain a sense of the breadth of the activities we provide and the impact they have on our participants, their families and our community. Additionally, in the pages of this program you will find a growing list of the names of our athletes, coaches, volunteers and supporters. In these lists and acknowledgements you will recognize your neighbors, colleagues, family members and friends. As I reviewed the program, it was clear to me how fortunate we are to live in a community that believes in inclusion and is working to make life better for all.
